Computing the KS2 curriculum
ICT is not fit for purpose
Michael Gove Bett show - January 2012ICT curriculum is a "mess" and must be radically
revampedThis is not news but Computing Curriculum starts
Sept. 2014
What are you going to do?
Please put your hands up for1. Wait and see?
2. Continue with ICT?
3. Teach Computing in Sept. 2014?
4. Already teaching Computing?
For those teaching computing great support on Naace and CAS site
Digital Wisdom• Digital literacy leads to digital wisdom –
an ability to be creative with technologyand make effective choices.
• Equip pupils to understand and change the world through logical thinking and precision
• Computing is a challenge • Skills shortage is a challenge - developer • We are good at it

Why?
Miles asked teachers: Why Teach Computing?
The Monster web
• Dark web – you have your eSafety horror stories• 0.2% of web is searchable by google.• Everything they do will be there forever. If
someone had told us to share personally like we do on Facebook. What would we have said?
• the 2017 Cyber security market will rocket to $129.1 billion from $63.7 billion in 2011
• Digital wisdom – what not to do and what to do when bad things happen. An example …
How can Technology damage you?

Change is necessary?I am sure you agree we know • we are not just training kids in office• Computational Thinking and
programming are essential for economy.• to deconstruct problems and apply logic
naturally takes time (new Latin)• one or two scratch units is not enough• But what curriculum change do we need
to make, by when and how?
Develop Digital Wisdom?• ISC ICT Strategy Group could create a
range of solutions for schools to consider for 30, 40 or 60 minutes per week not including Cross curricular
• Can’t throw out the baby with the ..• we need to create digital literacy to
develop Digital Wisdom and creativity
Why are CEOs going on coding courses?
Where do we find the staff, time resources,
recommendations
Will Slowly steadily gets there in the end or do we need radical reform
Developing Logic takes time• Computational thinking and programming
skills take time to learn how to deconstruct problems and apply logic
• Time needed for finding out what works and developing staff skills. Dentists wouldn’t just start using a new tool
• Cross curricular /Discrete (A level)• Currently we have old boys working at
Google whose computing skills were not developed at school
• Workshops and discussions to understand• Feedback through the website• Work with Miles - distil ideas - transferability?• Produce recommendations February 2014• Trial at Habs developing
logic, staff skills, cross curricular and discrete schemes and Raspberry Pi
Our Recommendations for KS2
• Great year A level and GCSE and Bio• Started April 2013 - 12 months to develop • Trialling with 4 new keen staff • Working with a variety of companies and
Miles and seeing what works from staff and student point of view.
• Chocolate and Competitions?• Clubs scratch in Y4 & film making Y6
KS2 at Habs?
• One place for feedback and post papers• Access to our Blogs, Technical strategy, info
and news • Post examples
of good practice• Searchable
Archive Papers and information
Our New Website
• What are the essential elements we should be covering in KS2?
• What resources make this easy?• How can we best support staff?• What is transferable between schools?• How can the ISC Strategy group help?
Are these the right questions?

• How digital systems work, are designed and programmed,
• Ensure that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves using technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
• Inbuilt self, peer and teacher assessment and detailed understanding of progression
