First computerIn 1981, International Business Machines Corp. entered the personal computer market, and was welcomed as a competitor, rather slyly, by Apple. IBM's PC boasted a disk operating system that became an industry standard. Hewlett-Packard had launched its first PC in 1980. The early '80s were to be dominated by microcomputer expansions -- and by a torrid pace of start-ups. Steadily improving microprocessors triggered a related explosion of other peripherals: printers, modems, disk drives, interlinked networks, equipment for building chips, video games, computer-assisted design. The games business reached its zenith in 1981 and by 1983 was plummeting.

How far technology has comeIt’s amazing to reflect on how far communications technology has come in fifteen years. In 1994, we were still excited about the advent of the fax. As the 90’s progressed the cell phone and mobile communications began to take hold of society. And then, the biggest change to our lives since the advent of the automobile - email! What did we do before email? How did we communicate with everyone we needed to each day, professionally and personally?

Junky computers Cheap computers are not good to buy because you don’t really know if they are crashed or just plain don’t work and is a piece of junk so I would buy a good expensive computer that is brand new so you at least know that it works.

Good computers Let’s face a fact: computer manufacturers don’t “make” anything. They assemble parts they purchased from somewhere else. This being the case, what makes a “good” computer? What’s the differentiator between purchasing your computer from HP or Dell? Compaq or Gateway? I’ve come up with a short list, along with my picks between the only two brands I have a lot of experience with: Gateway and Dell. So, if you’re buying the same machine, with the same parts, why pick one merchant over the other?

The best computers you can buyThe best computer systems do not come cheap. With computers, like most things, you can spend an almost unlimited amount of money on more stuff. However if you plan on keeping your computer for a while, it often pays to spend a little extra and get a really beefy system. It can be a real pain in the neck changing over to a new system when you upgrade, so getting a fast computer to start with means you do not have to worry about doing that for years.

How long computers have been around It's widely accepted that the first mechanical computer was invented by Charles Babbage in 1822. The first electric/mechanical computer was developed by IBM and Harvard in 1944 and the first purely electronic computer didn't come along until the 1960s.
