Outline

• Introduction• Activity 1: Testing Different kind of Ice• Activity 2: Hunting for Composite Materials • Activity 3: Exploring the Difference Between

Strength and Stiffness • Activity 4: Testing a Foam Composite for

Strength and Stiffness • Design Project: Designing a Fishing Pole• Product Idea

Introduction

• A composite material is made by combining two or more materials to give the composite unique properties. Composites do not dissolve or blend into each other.

Activity 1: Testing Different kind of Ice

• Objectives – Testing 3 samples of ice composites• Water only• Water and tissue paper • Water , cotton , newspaper and straws

Procedure

Results

• We found that the composite made of ice, cotton , straw and newspaper was stronger than ice alone

Activity 2: Hunting for Composites

• Objectives – We conducted an internet study to know more

about composites.

Composites Types Properties Examples Particle composites Stronger , cheaper concrete

Laminar composites

Flexible, light weight

plywood

Reinforced composites

Lighter, stronger and stiff material

Material used in tennis racquet

Activity 3: Exploring the Difference Between Strength and Stiffness

• Objectives – Test different materials like pasta , iron , nylon ,

wood , plastic.– Predict the ranking of the above materials for

strength and stiffness.

ResultsMaterial to be tested

Prediction about strength

Prediction about stiffness

Ranking from strongest to weakest

Ranking from stiffest to flexible

Iron rod 1 2 1 2

nylon 2 3 2 5

plastic 4 4 3 4

Wood 3 5 4 3

pasta 5 1 5 1

Activity 4: Testing Foam Composite for Strength and Stiffness

• Objectives – Test 3 types of foam• Plain foam• Foam reinforced from one side • Foam reinforced from two sides

Procedure

ResultsMass (g) Deflection in Plain

foam(cm)Deflection in 2-side foam(cm)

Deflection in 1-side foam(cm)

0 0 0 0

100 0.2 0 0.6

200 0.5 0.4 1.2

300 0.7 0.8 1.8

400 1.3 1.3 2

500 1.9 1.7 2.4

600 3 2 2.7

Conclusion

• We found that 2- side foam reinforcement showed high property of strength and stiffness.

• It showed less deflection for higher mass.

Design Project: Designing a Fishing Pole

• Objectives :– Design a fishing pole, made out of a composite

material that is based on plastic straw.

Procedure

ResultsMass (g) Length(cm) Deflection

0 13 0

50 14 1

100 14 1

200 15 2

250 15 2

300 16 3

400 17 4

450 17.5 4.5

500 17.5 4.5

600 19 6

700 19.5 6.5

900 21 8

1000 22.5 9.5

Conclusion

• We used plastic straw ,wood ,paper , cotton and wire as composite to make fishing pole to make it more flexible and strong which are the characteristics of fishing poles

• Hence more weight could be handled using composite material.

Heat – resistant car cover

Project Idea

Heat resistant car cover

• Owing to the high temperature in our country, we decided to make use of composite material in manufacturing car covers.

• We use the following material in composites:– Fabric– Nylon– Helium– Normal cover

Structure

Fluorescent fabric Nylon Helium fabric

layer

Conclusion

• Applications and Advantages– Our project helps people to reduce accidents

caused by overheating in cars during summer.– Also it cautions other drivers when parked at night

due to its fluorescent property.– Our design is highly economical , and

environmental friendly.

Acknowledgement

• We offer our sincere gratitude towards our partners UNESCO , Qatar National Commission for Education , Culture and Science and our sponsors RASGAS, MAERSK OIL and SHELL .

• We also thank AL-bairaq and our school teachers for giving us an opportunity to take part in this prestigious event.
