Completing 62 Years of Excellence While Serving New Jersey Schools
Fall 2014
Newsletter
Dear Athletic Directors;
I would like to remind everyone that our 55th DAANJ workshop in Atlantic
City is March 24 thru the 27th 2015 at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino. Our
incoming president Dr. Theodore D’Alessio has worked hard as the workshop
chairman and has put together and outstanding program which is titled “Looking
Back-Moving Forward”.
As the Retiring President for the DAANJ I am excited that everyone on the Board
of Trustees is working to make the association the best for everyone so we can
provide outstanding athletic administration to our school communities and student
athletes as they participate in all school sport programs throughout the state.
We continue to face challenging times in the wake of the hazing tragedy which has deeply affected the school and
community of Sayreville and one of our AD brothers John Kohutanycz. In difficult times our profession can help each
other persevere. Please show your support at this time.
As the fall season winds down and we prepare for state tournaments and the upcoming winter season, please do not
hesitate to reach out to your board of trustee members for mentoring in any area of administration in athletics. The daanj
web site has had a tremendous upgrade and I thank Denis Nelson for all his handwork as the webmaster for the DAANJ.
Good luck and God bless and you end your school year on a positive note.

In what most would say was unfortunate, a rainy
Saturday afternoon when Livingston High School took
on Millburn in their first football game of the season
brought unexpected awareness for the need to wear
sunscreen every day. The Live SunSmart Foundation
set up a tent and distributed Kiehl’s sunscreen and UV
sensitive wristbands that proved to all fans that even on
cloudy days it is important to protect yourself from the
rays of the sun – no matter how slight they may seem.
The Team SunSmart Awareness weekend was
spearheaded by LHS Athletic Director, Pat Genova in
order to raise awareness about skin cancer among our
youth throughout Essex County and to reinforcing the
importance that everyone should wear sunscreen.
Livingston kicked off Saturday’s activities through-
out the Super Essex Conference on September 13th
after having participated in the event the day before
as well. “The hope is that before players lace up their
cleats or put on their protective padding, they will ap-
ply a generous layer of sunscreen to their faces, arms,
legs and any other areas of exposed skin,” says Teri
Festa, Executive Director of the Live SunSmart Founda-
tion (LSSF), which is committed to educating everyone
on the importance of the prevention and early detection
of skin cancer. “Some scientists estimate that a child
who wears sunscreen everyday will cut his or her risk
of developing skin cancer as an adult by as much as
70%,” Festa says.

All 37 schools in the SEC were eligible to partake in the
“orange-out” in some way big or small by decorating the
hallways, fields and gyms with orange balloons, orange
streamers and posting awareness messages in the school,
playing fields and on social media. “We are so proud to be
an integral part of the Team SunSmart program” said Geno-
va. “As a melanoma survivor, I know all too well the dangers
of unprotected sun exposure. When I was a kid, I never wore
sunscreen but I now understand the importance of apply-
ing it regularly to prevent melanoma and other adverse skin
conditions.”, Genova went on to say.
Knowing that teens are a particularly vulnerable group,
the LSSF has partnered with the New Jersey State Inter-
scholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) and the Super Es-
sex Conference to introduce the Team SunSmart™ Skin
Cancer Awareness Weekend event. Information about skin
cancer, UV exposure and the positive impact sunscreen
protection has will be disseminated to athletes and admin-
istrators. In addition, the LSSF anticipates the message of
being sun smart to reach the entire student body at many
schools by having a presence at the athletic fields and by
positioning educational posters in general population areas
and hallways.
“Throughout the outdoor sporting seasons, New Jersey
student athletes often are in the sun for prolonged periods
of time and we want to help make sure they are protected,”
says Steven Timko, NJSIAA Executive Director. The NJSIAA is
a voluntary, non-profit organization comprising 433 accred-
ited public, private and parochial schools in the state, which
sets forth rules and regulations governing high school athlet-
ics. “Education is our first line of defense and with the co-
operation of athletic directors, athletic trainers and coaches
across the state, we are confident that we can make some
significant changes in the behavior of our student athletes,”
Timko says.
“The LSSF is thrilled to have such an influential partner
as the NJSIAA and Livingston HS to help us to reach our goal
of having all student athletes wear sunscreen as part of their
daily ritual,” Festa says.
“The SEC takes great care in ensuring that our athletes
are protected before stepping on to the field, court or any
playing surface”, declares Ted D’Allessio, Director of Ath-
letics at Millburn High School. “Depending on the sport,
the rules require helmets, shin guards, goggles and mouth
guards and now we want sunscreen as one of the elements
of protection for our athletes who are exposed to the sun for
long periods of time on a regular basis. Sunscreen should
be a part of the equipment bag much like their sports drinks
are today”, says D’Allessio. This has to be a community
effort with all stakeholders’ support including the athletic ad-
ministration, coaches, parents, booster clubs and the Com-
munity at-large. Demonstrating this, JAG Physical Therapy
is supporting the initiative as one of the lead sponsors of the
program.

can participate, donate or to learn more about Team Sun-
Smart Awareness Weekend, or the Live SunSmart Founda-

A career experience after 32 yearsin education and athletics
As a Coach and Athletic Director for over 32 years there are many types and kinds of strategic planning that you work on. These strategies may encompass a game plan against a tough opponent, a departmental strategy to increase moral in the coaching staff in your district, or a plan to make sure that all of the members in your respective conference or league are being treated fairly in regards to divisional align-ment. These strategies are ongoing in the day to day or year to year operations of a person who relishes the opportunity to be successful as a professional in education and athlet-ics. For me to be invited as a member of the 2016-2020 Strategic Planning Committee and meet at the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, NIAAA, headquarters in Indianapolis Indiana after throwing my hat in the ring, so to speak, at the National Convention in Ana-heim California last December was a great and humbling experience. I never thought an opportunity to enhance my professional growth on a national level was in the cards.
The NIAAA workshop on the development of the 2016 -2020 National Strategic Plan took place on October 11 to October 13, 2014. The General Chairs of the Planning Com-mittee was Rich Bechard from Missouri and Bruce White-head Executive Director of the NIAAA.
As a representative of Section One of the United States it was a great honor to sit on the Strategic Planning Commit-tee for Finance. The committee was composed of represen-tation from all eight sections in the United States. Besides me being from New Jersey, the committee members were from West Virginia, Georgia, Illinois, North Dakota, Maine, California and Washington State. The committee Chair was Sam Rasmussen from Indiana, the Executive Director of the Indiana Athletic Administrators Association. In addition there were two other committees present that were working on the area of Programs and Operations affiliated with the NIAAA. Each of those committees was formulated with rep-resentatives from each section of the United States as well.
The work sessions were lengthy from Saturday October 11 to Monday October 13. The objectives of the sessions were to review the present Strategic Plan from 2011 to 2015 in regards to its successes and or failures to date. In each session there was brainstorming of ideas and an objective to propose a formulation of ideas to assist in mak-ing things more productive and attainable in regards to the overall status of the finances of the NIAAA our governing body as Athletic Directors.
The 2011- 2015 plan focused on the following:• Leadershiptrainingandhowtoincreaseour memberships pursuing the LTI attendance and classes. • Increasemembership• IncreaseDues/Fees/Membership• Budgetcosts• Endowmentmonies.• Grants• PublicRelationsOur task in the sessions was to review progress to date
on each of the above listed categories and come up with a plan for the new set of years 2016-2020. Strategies were specific to each area. These formulated strategies were then presented to the full committee that was in attendance which consisted of 35 in all. The recapturing of all of the committees strategies are not specifically delineated at this time. The synopsis of this week ends body of work will be sent to each of us on the committee before the December National Convention to review digest and reevaluate. We will then meet in Maryland at the National Convention to con-vene and finalize the movement and proposals for the plan in 2016-2020.
The overall structure of the NIAAA is in good financial status but like any other business, and we are a business,

that being the one that deals with millions of young student athletes, we must find more specific and meaningful ways to attract new membership, increase revenue, promote sponsorship and give back to each and every program in some way.
I am grateful to Mr. Bob Hopek for his submitting of my name for consideration to this committee. I am in hopes that going forward the members of the DAANJ can be proud of where the NIAAA is going and heading financially and that one of their colleagues had something to do with its success.
If anyone has any questions in regards to my experience and or the overall NIAAA financial status please feel free to
give me a call. Game planning for something like this was a great experience and one that I highly recommend to anyone from the DAANJ to become a part of in the future if the op-portunity presents itself.
Be well and as a former boss of mine, who used Latin, as a way to express things in a simple manner.
“Que Audit Vincit” – translated – “Who Dares Wins” Dare to take on challenges you may not think you can handle or achieve. It does become worthwhile as I have just ex-perienced.

DAANJ Workshop 2015“looking Back – Moving forward”
The #1 goal of the DAANJ
is to develop, promote and pre-
serve the educational integrity
of interscholastic athletics. To
help our members attain this
goal, the DAANJ offers numer-
ous resources, professional
development and leadership
training throughout the year.
The intent of the Association is to maintain and improve
partnerships with the NJSIAA, NFHS, NIAAA and other pro-
fessional organizations.
Furthermore, the DAANJ seeks to instill the highest ideals
of ethical character among its members and within their ath-
letic communities. To this end, the DAANJ annual workshop
in Atlantic City will, once again, serve as the premiere venue
for an outstanding educational program for its membership.
We will be returning to the beautiful Golden Nugget Hotel
and Casino Marina.
The workshop will feature professional speakers, in-
service leadership training courses and numerous oppor-
tunities for you and other professionals to interact across
a wide range of relevant and current topics. As we have in
the past, the workshop will showcase in the Exhibit Hall,
the latest products, new technologies and a wide range
of services relating to all areas of interscholastic athletics
and activities. You can register on our “New and Improved”
website. Go to DAANJ.com to register online. A special
“Thank-you” goes out to Denis Nelson, from River Dell HS
for his efforts in securing a website that is both compre-
hensive and user-friendly.
The Registration Desk will open at noon on Tuesday,
March 24, 2015 and John McCarthy, Professor at Montclair
State College will kick-off the first of 25 Professional Devel-
opment Sessions (PDS) at that time. Ed Bonine, Executive
Director – Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, will
serve as our Keynote Speaker at our Buffet Dinner that eve-
ning. He will speak to this year’s
theme “Looking Back – Moving Forward” and how our
profession has changed, for better and for worst, over the
years. It is sure to be an entertaining and enlightening ses-
sion. Six General Sessions (GS), led by some of the most
established professionals in our field, will share their vast
experiences and knowledge with you throughout the 3-day
workshop. The awards banquet is scheduled for Thursday,
March 26, 2015, and will honor several of your peers for
their professional accomplishments and for their service to
our association.
New For 2015: In light of the food and beverage restric-
tions placed on county and conference individual hospital-
ity rooms by the Golden Nugget, The DAANJ will sponsor a
Membership Lounge that will be open to all members and
their guests throughout the Workshop. Light snacks and
beverages will be provided. The dates and times the Lounge
will be open will be posted on our website and during the
Workshop. I believe the Lounge will serve as a wonderful
venue that will enhance collegiality among our membership
statewide.
Please plan on attending our Workshop, as it will pro-
vide you the opportunity to renew some old acquaintances;
make some new “best friends” in the profession, and to
re-charge your spirit for one of the greatest professions
you can belong to.
Hope to see you in March,
Ted D’Alessio, CMAA,Athletic Director, Millburn High School
