Edmunds.com Makes Car Appraisal Tool Available To Dealer Web Sites

SANTA MONICA, Calif., - Car dealers now have a new way to engage and build trust with visi-tors to their Web sites, thanks to a new online tool from Edmunds.com, the premier resource for car shopping and automotive informa-tion. Edmunds.com’s True Market Value® Trade-In Tool is a widget for dealer Web sites that allows shoppers to obtain a third-party assessment of their car’s trade-in value while shopping for a new or used car.

“Visitors to our Web site clearly want to know the True Market Value® for their trade-in,” says Paul Passerelli, General Manager at Long Island City (NY) Hyundai. “Since the moment we first made Edmunds.com’s TMV® Trade-In Tool available on our site, it has quickly become our number one source of all leads with our high-est closing ratio.”

The release of the new trade-in tool comes on the heels of Ed-munds.com’s national rollout of

the Price Promisesm program, which offers upfront guaranteed pricing on vehicles listed by partic-ipating dealers on Edmunds.com’s inventory pages. Both Price Prom-isesm and the TMV® Trade-In Tool are part of Edmunds.com’s efforts to build and reinforce a bridge of trust between car shoppers and dealers.

“The best car dealers are constantly exploring new ways to create a friendlier and more stress-free experience for their customers,” says Edmunds.com Vice President of Product Integra-tion Katti Fields. “With the TMV® Trade-In Tool, dealers can provide a useful service while associating themselves with a trusted brand.”

Customers who use the TMV® Trade-In Tool provide detailed information about their vehicles including zip code, style, color, op-tions, condition and mileage – and their preferred contact informa-tion. A range of True Market Val-ue® prices are then displayed, and

the contact information is passed along to dealers who can then engage with their new customers. Only dealerships participating in Edmunds’ Premier Dealer Program are eligible to display the trade-in tool on their sites.

Kicking God Out Of The Car BusinessBy: Mark Ragsdale

A decade ago, I sat around the conference table with a bunch of dealers at a NADA 20-Group meeting, listening to members share their perspectives and practices. One of my friends jok-ingly called across the room to another “You better think about going to church to pay for those huge grosses (Gross Profits) you’re charging. “ The recipient replied “The car business is the most amoral business there is. You might as well discuss the spiritu-ality of that chair over there.”

How do we reconcile mak-ing as much money as we can, on everyone we can, as often as we can, and claim God could be anywhere near the car business? Many feel that He couldn’t possi-bly associate with such endeav-ors. So, they separate their lives into compartments of Business time, God time (usually church once per week at best), Family Time, Golf Time, whatever.

Interesting way of looking at the Almighty---He stops watch-ing you while you are at work, then gets back on the job when you take the kids to the water park. Not even close to the truth, but definitely interesting, to say the least.

Most, I believe, simply chalk the industry up to being neither moral nor immoral, like my friend did. He referred to the business “amoral,” rather than” immoral,” which two words mean something totally different. Dictionary.com defines “amoral” as:

1. not involving questions

of right or wrong; without moral quality;

neither moral nor immoral.2. having no moral standards,

restraints, or principles; unaware of or indifferent to questions of right orwrong: a completely amor-al person.

But is God any of those things: without moral quality, without moral standards, without prin-ciples, unaware and indifferent

to right and wrong? If you think things are bad enough in this world, with everybody manufac-turing their own moral standards and code, try dealing with a God who changes His Word to support such behavior.

Now, this is not a fire and brimstone message. Car dealers don’t go to hell for the sake of be-ing car dealers. And at the risk of (but without fear of) sounding he-retical to fellow believers; neither

do pornographers, murderers, nor drug dealers. There is only ONE choice that either gets you into or keeps you out of heaven---a per-sonal relationship with God.

Jesus says: “I am the way, and the truth,

and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.” John 14:5-7

The Apostle Paul said:“For the wages of sin is death,

but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Ro-mans 6:22-23

Why? We serve a Holy (unique) God who cannot be joined with sin. Yet we sin every day. Since the foundation of the world the ONLY valid payment for sin is with blood.

In the Old Testament, under a covenant with the Israelites to keep 613 Laws (yes, there are 603 more than the Ten Command-ments), the payment for breaking them required sacrificial offerings. You and I cannot even keep all of the Ten Commandments (who has not lied to people or coveted things), never mind the other 603 (which include eating pork, lamb, shrimp, lobster, catfish, and mow-ing the lawn on Saturday). When was the last time you picked a perfect Ram out of your herd, brought it live to the altar, and sacrificed it in the name of God’s forgiveness?

Jesus is the perfect Lamb, whose blood covers all and pays

2014 Detroit Auto Show Still A Go De-spite City’s Bankruptcy

The 2014 North American International Auto Show will take place as scheduled at Cobo Center next January, show organizers said.

There had been concerns raised over the fate of the show, which has been held every year since 1965, due to Thurs-day’s bankruptcy filing by the city of Detroit. Detroit has accumulated some $20 billion in debt and has struggled to pay creditors.

In an interview with A Dealer’s

Journal, Rod Alberts, executive director of the Detroit Auto Deal-ers Association, said of the bank-ruptcy “It was something that had

to happen for Detroit to move for-ward. It’s our opportunity now to

actually relieve ourselves from this legacy of liabilities that we have and get a fresh start for the city.”

Since Cobo Center operates independently from the city of Detroit, the bankruptcy should have little effect. Show or-ganizers did say that in the wake of incidents like the Boston bombing they will be hir-ing and managing the security for the show themselves, instead of rely-

ing on private companies to beef things up.

McLEAN, Va. - The city of New Orleans will host the 51st annual American Truck Dealers (ATD) Convention & Expo next January.

“There’s a limited number of hotel rooms available at the Hilton Riverside, which is the ATD head-quarters hotel, so we’re encourag-ing dealers to register as soon as possible,” said ATD Convention Chairman Steve Parker. “A benefit of staying at the Hilton Riverside is that ATD dealers, managers, spouses and relatives can attend the daily continental breakfasts and evening receptions sponsored by Eaton.”

Keynote speakers include Philip Byrd, incoming chairman of the American Trucking Associa-tions; Lt. General Russel L. Hon-oré (Ret.), commander of the Joint Task Force Katrina and Global

Preparedness Authority, who led the Department of Defense re-sponse to hurricanes Katrina and Rita in Alabama, Mississippi and

Louisiana; and ATD Chairman Dick Witcher, chief executive offi-cer of Minuteman Trucks in Wal-pole, Mass.

The ATD convention runs con-currently with NADA from Friday, Jan. 24 to Monday, Jan. 27 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Cen-ter, which was renovated earlier this year.

Dealers will have the oppor-tunity to meet face-to-face with their manufacturer executives at 11 franchise meetings and with exhibitors in the ATD Zone on the expo floor. Boat Lift Buoys Minnesota Manufacturer’s Fortunes

www.adealersjournal.biz

Cambridge, MN - Manufacturer Vanpro is enjoying surging sales thanks to its sister company’s modular dock-and-lift system for small boats and water bikes. The Swift Lift, a modular, portable lift for small boats and water bikes, has given a boost to inventor/entrepre-neur Brian Varsoke’s contract-manufacturing company, Vanpro Inc. in Cambridge, Minn.

The lift has everything he was look-ing for, but couldn’t find, in a lift and dock system, said Varsoke, who described it as lightweight, compact, easy to set up and adaptable to vary-ing shorelines and water depths. The abrasion-resistant rails won’t damage hulls, he said, and the lift has no moving parts.

Sales have surged since the Swift Lift was launched three years ago, Varsoke said. Custom-ers include campers, lakeside homeowners and resorts and lodges. The JetLift, a lift-and-trail-er system for stand-up water bikes that was introduced in 2011, has gained exposure and sales as rac-ing pros have adopted it.

With orders swamping his fac-

tory, Varsoke is expanding efforts to find distributors to get lifts to dealers nationally and in other countries.

The Swift Lift’s success has been a boon to Vanpro, which pro-duces precision-machined com-ponents and subassemblies for

the medical device, defense and communications industries. The company’s expertise in working with specialized metals such as magnesium is a key differentiator, Varsoke said.

Vanpro enjoyed several years of strong growth before the reces-sion and, like many manufactur-ers, is still recovering. Varsoke, who has extensive manufacturing experience, was a longtime Van-pro customer when he worked for other companies. He and his wife, Michelle, became partial owners in 2005 at the invitation of Vanpro founder Gene Van Alstine, who started the company in 1977. The

Varsokes became full owners in 2008.

The Swift Lift has fulfilled Var-soke’s goal of developing a pro-prietary product to complement Vanpro’s contract-manufacturing work.

“To have a proprietary product allows you as a business to control your destiny more so than just having cus-tomers come to you,” Var-soke said. “It helps balance things out.”

The Swift Lift has a 2,000-pound capac-ity and all but the largest model weigh less than 150 pounds. A video on the Swift Lift website shows two people putting together a lift in less than three minutes on land, while other clips show boats and

personal watercraft easily gliding onto and back off the lift placed in the water on the shoreline of a lake. Accessories such as a winch and wheel kits enable users to tow the lift behind an all-terrain ve-hicle or convert it into a shop cart or display stand. (The lift breaks down quickly, as well, for storage in its own carrying bag.)

Vanpro and Premier Outdoor Products share 10 employees, Var-soke said. Lift sales through the first quarter of 2013 had tripled last year’s sales and could end this year five times ahead of 2012,

he said. Combined revenue for the companies last year was $3.4 million.

The Swift Lift is “revolutionary to the marine industry” in its ma-terials and engineering, Varsoke said, and incorporates heavy-du-ty, aircraft-grade aluminum and high-grade plastics. Varsoke said he, engineering manager Dar-ren Bombich and plant manager Robert Sholly have spearheaded product development.

Brian O’Rourke of Nashville-based Team Faith Ministries, said his pro racing team uses Swift Lifts and JetLifts in varying configurations to load watercraft onto the rack system in his semi-trailer, to tow watercraft between the pits and the beach and as shop carts.

“Nothing really does compete with it,” O’Rourke said. “The ver-satility allows us to do whatever

we want and to customize the

fit to our needs. It’s perfect. We wouldn’t be able to effectively do our job without them.”

Scott Jauman has a custom 24-foot Swift Lift for his 20-foot Lund Alaskan fishing boat on Lake Winnibigoshish in north-central

Minnesota.“It’s an ingenious design and

one of the best investments I’ve made,” Jauman said. “I’m always looking for things I can manage on my own and make life easier. I cannot imagine being 70 years old and moving a standard boat lift on my own.”

The expert says:Debasish Mallick, associate

professor in the operations and supply-chain management de-partment at the University of St. Thomas’ Opus College of Busi-ness, said contract manufactur-ers such as Vanpro sometimes transition into making their own products.

“They start off by making prod-ucts for other companies and over a period of time they get to know the technology better, they get to know the customers better and the two things come together in a proprietary product,” Mallick said.

Boston, MA - Tesla Motors is a step closer to being able to legally sell its electric-powered cars out of its Natick Mall showroom.

The Natick Planning Board voted to approve a modification to the Tesla’s site plan, according to Natick Community Development Director Patrick Reffett.

The matter will now go be-fore Selectmen. Tesla had been requesting a zoning exception to allow sale from their space at the mall. The exception would allow Tesla to consolidate its operations

in Natick, which now consist of a showroom at the mall, where customers can see a car and get information, and a sales office on West Central Street, where actual sales are handled.

While one of Tesla’s high-end vehicles sits in the company’s mall gallery, any test drives must be arranged through the company’s sales office. Planning Board hear-ings on Tesla’s application oc-curred from April to June. The company already won the first round of a lawsuit filed against it

by the Massachusetts State Auto-mobile Dealers Association.

The dealers association sued Tesla to prevent it from opening in the mall last fall, but a Norfolk Superior Court judge dismissed the case, ruling that the associa-tion lacked legal standing to chal-lenge the arrangement since it did not have a dealership affiliated with Tesla. The association is also suing the Board of Selectmen, al-leging that the board improperly granted a license for Tesla’s sales office.

Panasonic Fined Millions For Price FixingWASHINGTON, DC - Pana-

sonic and its SANYO subsidiary will pays $56.5 million in criminal fines for fixing prices of auto parts and battery cells, the Justice De-partment stated.

There were two conspiracies, the Department of Justice said in a statement: Panasonic’s, on auto parts, and SANYO’s, on battery cells. Both companies are based in Osaka, Japan. Panasonic agreed to pay $45.8 million and SANYO to pay $10.7 million.

A third company, LG Chem, agreed to plead guilty and pay a $1.1 criminal fine for the bat-tery cell conspiracy. Panasonic was charged with three felonies in Detroit Federal Court. It will plead guilty to conspiring to fix prices in switches, steering angle sensors and high intensity discharge bal-lasts.

SANYO and LG Chem will plead guilty to conspiring to fix prices of lithium ion battery cells used in computers.

“Panasonic participated in a conspiracy to rig bids for,

and to fix, stabilize and maintain the prices of steer-ing wheel switches, turn switch-es, wiper switches, combination switches and door cour-tesy switch-es sold to Toyota,” the Justice Department said in the statement.

The statement added: “Panasonic and its co-conspirators participated in a conspir-acy to sup-press and eliminate competition

NextGear Capital To Present New Auction Awards At NAAA Annual Convention

CARMEL, Ind. - NextGear Capital has announced the cre-ation of two new industry awards to recognize independently-owned auto auctions for their dedication to and support of the industry. The inaugural presentation of the NextGear Capital Auction Partners Awards will be made on Septem-ber 4th at the 2013 National Auto Auction Association’s (NAAA) An-nual Convention, held September 3-5 in Indianapolis, IN.

The Operational Excellence Award will be presented to the auction that demonstrates ex-cellent efficiency, top sales re-tention and overall operational performance, and most effective response to the needs of Next-Gear Capital. The award will be presented in two categories: small and large market auctions.

The second award presented will be the Remarketing Excel-

lence Award, which will recognize the auction that demonstrates the highest percentage of sales recovered based on percentage of valuation of each vehicle, the best throughput performance (number of days from when a vehicle is at the auction to days sold), and the best sales follow-up (efficient tim-ing on getting proceeds of sales to NextGear Capital). Again, there will be a winner selected from both the small and large market auc-tions.

“The auctions are where it all happens,” said Shane O’Dell, COO of NextGear Capital. “They drive this industry for dealers large and small, and without their untiring efforts, remarketing would not be the dynamic industry it is today.”

NextGear Capital plans to make the Auction Partners Awards an annual event. The company continues

to focus on its customer-centric approach throughout the US and Canada, and strongly believes in-dependent auctions are the key-stone to continual growth in the remarketing industry.

About NextGear Capital:NextGear Capital is the world’s

most comprehensive and innova-tive provider of lending products for vehicle dealers and auctions. With pioneering technology and a total commitment to customer ser-vice, NextGear Capital empowers dealers to floor plan vehicles from anywhere, at any time. NextGear Capital lines of credit can be used for a variety of purchases - Retail, Wholesale, Salvage and Specialty. Ltd. and American Honda Motor Co. Inc., Mazda Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor of America Inc., and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and Nissan North America Inc. in the United States and elsewhere.

“Including Panasonic, 11 companies and 15 executives have pleaded guilty or agreed to plead guilty and have agreed to pay a total of more than $874 million in criminal fines as a result of the auto parts investiga-tion.”

Twelve people have been criminally fined and sentenced to one to two years in prison. The three other ex-ecutives agreed to serve time in prison and are awaiting sentenc-ing.

New Dealership Seeks To Fill Niche In Valley

Roanoke Rapids, NC - A new car dealership at a storied loca-tion is seeking to fill a niche in the automobile market, not take away business from other dealers. Se-lect Auto Sales, 320 Becker Drive in Roanoke Rapids, opened its doors the beginning of this month, and have immediately gone about setting themselves up as a unique auto-buying experience. “We take our time with our customers,” said co-owner Alan Vester, of Lake Gaston, who came out of

retirement to join partners Richard Shoe, of Roanoke Rap-ids, and Rolf Ramelmeier, of West Friendship, Md., to open Select. “We really appreciate our custom-ers,” Vester said. “So we want to take the time with them.”

The business, originally slated to open on Roanoke Av-enue, seized on the opportunity

to open at the Becker Drive loca-tion, formerly occupied by Nis-san of Roanoke Rapids, which is owned by Vester’s family. “We feel like it’s hard to beat reputation,” Vester said. “This location has had a great reputation for a very long time.” Shoe said the dealer-ship is all about providing cars at affordable prices, which he said is needed in Halifax

County, but he and his part-ners are not about providing “cheap” cars. “We personally select every car on this lot,” Shoe said. “That’s one of the reasons we’re called ‘Select Auto Sales.’” Shoe said the dealership has turned down plenty of cars that did not meet their standards, and even being as choosy as they are, their aim is to sell the cars and trucks on their lot currently 60 are avail-able for under $10,000. Vester

said the dealership does special orders, and Shoe said any reason-able request for make, year, model and color can be accommodated. So far, the dealership has met every request. Vester added while the location can hold 500 cars, the dealership plans to keep the in-ventory low in order to ensure the cars are interesting to the custom-ers. Ramelmeier said the dealer-ship is filled with a staff of good people, and customers will get a pleasant car-buying

experience if they choose Select. Select Auto Sales is open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mon-day through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The service hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more informa-tion, visit www.selectautosalesrr.com. or call 252-410-0010.

O’Reilly Automotive Looks To Keep Profit Streak Alive

Springfield, Mo - Auto parts re-tailer O’Reilly Automotive looks to continue its lengthy run of strong earnings growth as it continues to benefit from an aging fleet of cars in the U.S.

The Springfield, Mo.-based company is expected to post second-quarter earnings of $1.50 a share, according to a poll of Thomson Reuters analysts. That’s up from $1.15 a share the prior year.

O’Reilly has grown the bottom line at least 19% for the last 12 quar-ters. Though sales growth hasn’t been as robust, the company still churns out top-line gains with regularity.

Favorable industry trends have played a big part in the company’s

performance. Like other leading auto parts companies, includ-

ing AutoZone and Genuine Parts, O’Reilly does well when the na-

tion’s fleet of cars on the road grows older. That’s been happening for the past few years as skit-tish consumers decided to stick with their old vehicles rather than trade them in for something newer.

Even though more consumers are replacing older cars now, the av-erage vehicle age is still high by historical stan-dards. Investors have tak-en note. O’Reilly shares have been on a steady rise on the stock market. Shares are up more than

30% for 2013.

Michelin Recalls 100,000 Holey Tires Because Sidewall Perforations Are Bad

Detroit, MI - Michelin–you know, the company with the white “Michelin Man” mascot that you thought was the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man–is recall-ing 100,000 tires because some left the factory with perforations in their sidewalls. As a result, the tires can deflate prematurely. That, in turn, can cause an ac-cident. And as we know, unless you’re in a de-molition derby, accidents aren’t good.

The tires being recalled are LTX M/S 2, X Radial LT2,

and Latitude Tour models, which are designed for trucks

and SUVs. Michelin

found a sample of 2,500 tires were like-ly to have small

holes in them,

so it de-cided to

recall the whole batch of tires that were made from September 2012 to June 2013, 100,000 in all. Mi-chelin is issuing a recall to replace all tires free of charge at one of its distributors effective immediately.

Customers who purchased the tires will be notified via mail starting next week, and customers who’ve already had to replace their tires will be reimbursed.

For more information on the recalled tires, call Michelin’s cus-tomer service line at (855) 851-4951 or visit Michelin’s recall site for more information.

Dealers To Give High Noon Bids At The New Mile High Auto Auction

Centennial, CO – Industry veteran Tim De-Berry has chosen his home state of Colo-rado as the proving ground for his lifelong dream of building an auto auction. “Mile High Auto Auction was founded to pro-vide dealers with the absolute best service,” said DeBerry. “My part-nership with Loveland Auto Auc-tion owners Scott Read and Bart Barnett is making this happen.

“We have facilities that will house our auction lanes, our full recon, body and mechani-cal shops, plus indoor parking for 200+ vehicles all located off a main access road in south Den-ver,” continued DeBerry. “This

came together like a perfectly writ-ten story. The characters, the setting and the timing could not have been more ideal.”

“Mile High Auto Auction is a great opportunity. A lot of amazing forces have come together to create this auction. There hasn’t been a sale in south Denver in over 25 years (since George Lamb’s Colorado Auto Auction on South Sante Fe), said Bart Barnett. “It’s an exciting time. We are proud of the experienced team we are put-

ting to-gether.”

Ac-cording to Scott Read, “Our mutual goal is to consoli-date not only our

experience, but our combined resources and relationships. With so many dealers and so much car busi-ness in this area, we are very excited to be in the best place at the right time.”

Mile High Auto Auction will hold sales every Tuesday at 12:00 noon at their newly renovated fa-cilities at 9750 East Costilla Ave-nue in Centennial, Colorado. De-Berry added “When we calculated our combined time in the auction business, we realized we’re bring-ing over a hundred years of experi-ence to Centennial!”

for the sins of the world:“For God so loved the world,

that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:15-17

This forgiveness for our in-evitable sin is called Grace which Dictionary.com defines as:

1. a manifestation of favor, es-pecially by a superior: It was only through the dean’s grace that I wasn’texpelled from school. Syn-onyms: forgiveness, charity, mer-cifulness. Antonyms: animosity, enmity, disfavor.

2. mercy; clemency; pardon:

He was saved by an act of grace from the governor. Synonyms: lenity, leniency, reprieve.

Did you know that most of the Bible was written by murderers? Moses killed an Egyptian who was whipping an Israelite slave. David had his best friend killed so he could marry the man’s wife. The Apostle Paul persecuted Chris-tians before God knocked him off a donkey on his way to Damascus to kill more!

So do you qualify for this Grace? Yes you do! But you must choose to have a personal relation-ship with Him---to “know” Him rather than just know ABOUT

Him. You will no longer need to check God at the door when you come to work. You will conduct your business with a new knowl-edge, wisdom, and understanding; operating under ONLY ONE Law:

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

John 15:11-13 God has been kicked out of

our schools, our courthouses, our town squares, and even most of our homes. Invite Him into your life, including your dealership and watch what He does.

Car Parts Maker Expands In Hancock CountySpectra Premium Industries

Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of automotive parts, plans to hire dozens more workers in Hancock County as it moves its distribution operations from Knightstown to a mammoth industrial facility near Mount Comfort.

Spectra has commenced a long-term lease for a 250,000 square-foot building at Axcess70 Business Park, located north of the Interstate 70/Mount Com-fort Road interchange in Hancock County.

The facility will be Spectra’s main distribution center for the United States, according to Greg Vaughn, quality manager of affili-ate Spectra Premium USA Corp. The firm owns a 60,000 square-foot distribution facility in nearby

Knightstown that has served as a U.S. distribution hub. Looking for more space, it settled on the Axcess70 location, in part to keep its local workforce intact, Vaughn said. The changeover is expected to be complete by early September.

The Knightstown center em-ployed about 50 workers. Spectra has hired dozens of work-to-hire temps for the new facility, and hopes to bring them on perma-nently in the near future for a total headcount of more than 100, Vaughn said.

Spectra manufactures and distributes cooling and fuel system products in the U.S. and Canada. Its products include radiators, heaters, condensers, fuel tank assemblies, and air-conditioning systems. “That building sat empty during the downturn, and we

turned away some smaller tenants until we found who we wanted,” said Dale Pfeifer, director of real estate development for Indianapo-lis-based Browning.

A joint venture of Browning and New York City-based Real Estate Capital Partners started development of Axcess70 in 2008. Development costs for the build-ings, totaling 673,000 square feet, were about $27 million.

Two tenants fully occupy the other building, including lithium-ion battery maker EnerDel.

About 80 acres of land at Ax-cess70 remain available for de-velopment, Pfeifer said. Options include build-to-suit properties for distribution operations.

Sergio Marchionne To Deliver Opening Ad-dress At The 2014 Canadian International

Auto ShowTORONTO, CANADA - Mark

your calendars now, because the opening ceremony of the 2014 Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) promises to be one of the highlight events of the auto indus-try year.

Chrysler Canada and the CIAS announced that Sergio Mar-chionne, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Chrys-ler Group LLC and CEO of Fiat S.p.A., one of the most sought-after speakers in the business world, will be the keynote speaker at the official opening ceremonies for CIAS 2014 in Toronto.

The ceremonies will take place as part of media preview day on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at the CIAS venue in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The show will open to the public on February 14 and run through February 23, 2014. It will be something of a homecoming for Marchionne, who was born in Italy

but grew up and went to school in Toronto and remains a dual-citi-zen of both Canada and Italy.

Marchionne is a barrister, so-licitor and chartered accountant, having earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Philoso-phy and minor in Economics from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Toronto. He also holds Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from the University of Windsor (Ontario).

Marchionne is best known, however, as the architect behind Fiat’s alliance with Chrysler and as a straight-talking executive. His appearance in Toronto is certain to provide plenty of grist for the media mill. “If there is a superstar in the global auto industry, Ser-gio Marchionne is it,” says Frank Romeo, president of the CIAS. “We are delighted to welcome him back

to his hometown to officially open the 2014 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. It is truly our honour and we thank him and Chrysler Canada for hosting the opening ceremonies, on behalf of both the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association (TADA) and the Canadian International Auto Show.” Each year, one automaker acts as the official host of the show, representing all the manu-facturers and staging the opening ceremonies. For 2014, Chrysler Canada will fulfill that role.

The Canadian International Auto Show, which celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2013, is the largest and most important auto show in Canada, typically attract-ing more than 300,000 attendees and in excess of 1,000 accredited media representatives.

It is also one of the premier auto shows within North America and is gaining in stature interna-tionally.
