C ompassion’s ministry to children is distinctly Christian. Our holistic child development programs are unique in that they are:

• Christ-centred

• Child-focused

• Church-based

This clear and consistent Christian identity is something that we never seek to hide or compromise in our communications. Indeed, this is the main reason why so many people choose to support a child through Compassion.

Compassion believes that it is not enough to simply feed the poor without introducing them to the source of life—Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must provide for the spiritual needs of children, as well as their economic, social, physical and emotional needs.

THE COMPASSION differenceChanging lives goes beyond changing external circumstances. The hope and inner transformation that comes from knowing Jesus provides the foundation for the most profound human development to occur.

the difference is JESUS

6

Page 7: Compassion About Us booklet

Christ-centredAt Compassion, we desire to keep Christ at the centre of all we do and seek God’s guidance for our plans and decisions. Compassion’s ministry is dedicated to caring for the poor and giving hope to the hopeless by spreading the good news of the gospel. We operate internationally as followers of God’s Word in response to the Great Commission, by presenting the life-changing gospel to every child in an age-appropriate, culturally relevant and non-coercive way.

Child-focusedCompassion’s holistic child development ministry engages each child as a complete person. God’s heart for children compels us to act on their behalf. By working holistically with individual children to address their spiritual, economic, social, physical and emotional needs, we afford them an opportunity to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults. We believe that when children see themselves as Jesus sees them and when they realise their worth and identity in Christ, then they begin to flourish and grow and develop in other areas of their lives.

Church-basedWe believe that the church is God’s chosen instrument to fulfil the Great Commission and to bring justice to the poor and oppressed. We know that the local church is uniquely placed to understand the real needs of people and best able to make strategic decisions about the needs of the community.

Our experience has also shown that the local church fosters an environment of unparalleled stability, giving children the opportunity to experience God’s love and acceptance.

This is why Compassion works exclusively with over 4500 local churches in developing nations to deliver our comprehensive Holistic Child Development Model to children living in desperate poverty.

Compassion equips, trains, and provides resources to these local churches, of various denominations, so that they may realise their vision of changing their communities for the better, by helping the children they serve to grow and reach their God-given potential.

7

Page 8: Compassion About Us booklet

S ince 1952, the core of Compassion’s ministry has been to introduce children to Jesus Christ—to provide them with hope.

We believe that when Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me …” He knew that all we have to do is make a way. Children will naturally come to Jesus if we do not hinder them.

Throughout the Bible, there are many references to children and their significance in society. Jesus frequently talked about children and their importance in the Kingdom:

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Mark 10:14

Therefore, as children are strategic in building the kingdom of heaven, it is vital that they are nurtured and valued in their formative years.

Children are the leaders of tomorrow … and today.

It is during childhood that the most significant life changes can be made and positive patterns developed. For healthy holistic development it is

crucial that children receive the necessary care, nurture and training while they are still young so that they can grow to become all that God intended them to be. By introducing children to Jesus at an early age, they can play a vital role in promoting change within their families and communities. King David became a mighty leader, but was still a boy when God used him to save his nation.

Unfortunately, it is always the children who are hardest hit by the effects of extreme poverty, exploitation and abuse—yet they are the least able and have the fewest resources available to change their circumstances. Of the 2.2 billion children in our world today, nearly half are living in desperate conditions.* Compassion believes that one of the most effective ways to address poverty in a community is to begin by impacting and changing the lives of its children.

Currently over one million children are assisted through Compassion internationally.

Compassion’s Holistic Child Development Model touches every aspect of a child’s life through all stages of development; from the womb to the workforce. Our child development programs minister to the spiritual, economic, social, physical and emotional needs of individual children.

Compassion empowers and equips local churches to develop and operate its programs towards meeting the specific and individual needs of children in poverty within their communities.

Program activities vary in detail according to the culture, environment and needs of the area where the individual centres are located. However, there are common elements in the programs which ensure that all Compassion assisted children are given the greatest opportunity to be released from poverty.

Our model depends on two key partnerships— the local Christian church and committed supporters.

Compassion’s HOLISTIC CHILD DEVELOPMENT MODEL

DEVELOPING, DISCIPLING AND EQUIPPING CHILDREN FOR LIFE

This program aims to holistically develop children into fulfilled

and responsible adults by providing them with access to

education, health care, nutritious food, safe places to play

and Christian teaching. Children in this program are linked

to a sponsor who is able to speak God’s love directly into the

child’s life through their letters and prayers.

RESCUING, NURTURING AND DISCIPLING LITTLE ONES

This program aims to prevent premature death, secure

good health, and enable positive early development in the

youngest, most vulnerable children. The program assists

pregnant women, at-risk babies and infants, and their

mothers and caregivers by providing access to medical

assistance, pre-natal and post-natal care, nutritious food,

early child development and adult education.

EDUCATING, TRAINING AND DISCIPLING SERVANT LEADERS

This program aims to develop and educate students who

have graduated from the Child Sponsorship Program into

Christian leaders in their communities and nations. The

program provides students with an annual scholarship to

cover university fees, expenses and resources, as well as

Christian leadership training and mentoring to develop

their intrinsic leadership skills.

COMPLETING COMPASSION'S CORE PROGRAMS

These interventions aim to enhance and improve the

lives of children, their families and local communities,

complementing the development outcomes of

Compassion’s core child development programs.

Interventions include clean drinking water, medical care,

nutritional assistance, disaster relief, income generation,

educational initiatives and vocational training.

11

Page 12: Compassion About Us booklet

Every day over 24,000 children under five die from preventable causes.

Compassion’s Child Survival Program aims to reach the most vulnerable children and prevent premature death, secure good health, and enable positive early child development.

The program assists pregnant women, at-risk babies and infants, and their mothers and caregivers by providing critical interventions such as medical assistance, pre-natal and post-natal care, and nutritious food.

The Child Survival Program educates mothers on how to provide a safe home environment and age-appropriate developmental opportunities so that their babies and infants have greater opportunities for healthy growth. Mothers and caregivers are also taught literacy and numeracy skills and many receive support for vocational training and income-generating activities to help improve the long-term economic capacity of their

families. Mothers, caregivers and children also

receive spiritual nurturing so that they can have

the opportunity to develop a dynamic lifelong

relationship with Christ.

All children complete the program by the age

of four, with most transitioning into the Child

Sponsorship Program from the age of three.

To make regular donations to this program or to enquire about funding an entire Child Survival Program, please call 1300 22 44 53 or email [email protected].

A s soon as 17-year-old Maria announced

she was pregnant, her mother disowned

her and forced her to move out of home.

Desperate, and without means even to buy food,

Maria was told about the Child Survival Program

run by the local church in her poor neighbourhood

just outside Lima, Peru. She immediately asked for

help and was registered into the program.

In addition to receiving adequate supplies of

nutritious food, Maria was nurtured during her

pregnancy and learned about what to expect

during childbirth and how to care for her newborn

baby. Since the birth of her daughter, Nicole,

Maria continues to receive regular food supplies.

She also attends meetings at the church where,

along with the other mothers in the program, she

is taught many practical skills, including how

to provide a nurturing home environment and

developmental activities that her baby needs for healthy growth. She is also learning how to cook nutritious meals for herself and her daughter. The program also provides literacy skills and opportunities for income-generation for the mothers and caregivers.

Like all the mothers enrolled in the program, Maria receives a weekly home visit from a Child Survival Program implementer. “She teaches me how to be a good mother,” reports Maria. “Once when Nicole was in hospital with a high fever, she even came to pray for her. She teaches me to trust the Lord, even in difficult times.”

When asked about the most important benefit she receives through the Child Survival Program, Maria answers, “The love they transmit to us, because through them, we learn to love our children. I love my daughter very much.”

The Child Sponsorship Program is the heart of

Compassion’s ministry to some of the world’s

poorest children. This holistic program links each

individual child with a sponsor and helps to equip

children for the future by providing for their

core needs—spiritually, economically, socially,

physically and emotionally.

The program is administered and operated by

local church partners in the communities where

the children live. Program activities take place

in what is known as a child development centre.

These centres are safe places where the children

are loved, accepted and nurtured by church staff

and volunteers. All staff and volunteers employed

by both Compassion and the local church partners

are Christian.

Children can be registered in the program from the

age of three. The expected age at which children

complete the program varies from country to

country, but it is usually between the ages of

18 and 22.

All children in the program receive regular

health and dental checks from trained health

professionals. At the same time, Compassion

ensures that the children are taught about good

health and hygiene practices, exercise, and

preventive health care strategies. The children

receive nutritious meals when they attend the

child development centre.

Each child registered in the Child Sponsorship

Program is provided with learning opportunities that complement and enhance the local school curriculum. The program aims to equip each sponsored child with vocational skills training, which will help them prepare for future employment.

Children in the program receive individualised care and attention from trained staff who regularly maintain records monitoring each child’s attendance, academic performance and health. The children are given the opportunity for healthy social interaction and emotional development through group activities and games.

The children at each child development centre receive Christian teaching* and are presented with the gospel message in a culturally relevant and non-coercive way. All sponsored children receive an age-appropriate Bible.**

*Sponsored children receive Christian teaching as part of the outreach ministry of the local churches with whom Compassion partners to deliver and administer the program.

A t Compassion Child Development Centre BR-417, in Fortaleza, Brazil, nine-year-old Jefferson runs around playing and

laughing with the other children. Jefferson knows he is safe here. He knows that he is loved and valued and has real hope for the future.

But Jefferson’s life hasn’t always been that way. When you look closely you notice that part of the big toe on his left foot is missing and there are tiny scars on his head. The sad fact is that Jefferson was abandoned at birth and dumped in a rubbish tip where he was attacked by rats. Fortunately he was rescued by a passer-by named Fatima who immediately took him to the hospital where he spent several months in intensive care.

Fatima became Jefferson’s mother from the day she found him and over the years she has faithfully cared for her son, despite having

limited resources. She is grateful that Jefferson is now sponsored and receiving support through the Compassion Child Sponsorship Program. He attends school regularly, receives nutritious food and regular health checks, and enjoys taking part in all the development activities at the Compassion centre. He has also accepted the Lord and would like to become a pastor when he grows up.

Centre Director, Hosana Brito, speaks proudly of Jefferson. “He is a very smart boy and we know that God has special plans for his future.”

Hosana and her team of staff and volunteers not only care for the children, but reach out tothe parents, many of whom are single mothers forced by poverty into prostitution. These mothers come along to the centre and learn to sew and make handicrafts that enable them to earn a small income.

Educating, training and discipling servant leaders

PROGRAM

Compassion’s Leadership Development Program identifies outstanding students who have completed Compassion’s Child Sponsorship Program.

The program provides students with the opportunity and resources to attend university, receive Christian leadership training, and develop their intrinsic leadership skills. Each Leadership student is selected according to strict criteria including proven academic achievement, Christian commitment, demonstrated leadership skills and a willingness to serve.

In addition to providing funds towards university tuition and other related expenses, such as books, room and board, the program also provides a rigorous curriculum of Christian leadership training and mentoring. Students graduate from this program ready to serve their communities and bring hope for the future to their nations.

If you would like to sponsor a Leadership student or donate to the Leadership Development Program program please call 1300 22 44 53 or email [email protected].

A lthough her grades at school were excellent and she had always dreamed of becoming a doctor, the fact that Damaris

Bojorquez was born into poverty made those aspirations impossible. But God had other plans!

After successfully completing Compassion’s Child Sponsorship Program, Damaris was a little hesitant about applying for the Leadership Development Program as she did not believe she was a suitable candidate. “I didn’t consider myself as a leader. I had good grades, but I didn’t consider myself smart,” said Damaris.

But Compassion Guatemala staff members believed that not only was Damaris intelligent, but she also demonstrated servant leadership. She was accepted into the Leadership Program and began studying medicine at San Carlos University in Guatemala.

Without the financial support and emotional nurturing that she received throughout the program, Damaris believes she would not have been able to complete her degree. Her faith in God also gave her hope when she had periods of self-doubt and she often took comfort in the words of Psalm 46.

Damaris gained confidence as a leader through the leadership training workshops and the mentoring program provided by Compassion. She now understands that a true leader is a servant leader, just like Jesus. “At first I thought that a leader was the one who told everyone else what to do, that’s why I didn’t consider myself a leader. But now I understand that a leader is the one who

demonstrates the things God does,” said Damaris. “I can demonstrate leadership not by ruling over others, but by demonstrating justice and kindness. We need to gain respect from the people we lead, not fear.”

“I would probably have given up on my dream of becoming a doctor if I hadn’t had the support and encouragement of Compassion, especially my Leadership Facilitator. Even though many of the other students had rich parents who could afford to pay for their education, I was always given everything I needed and so I didn’t feel inferior to them … in fact many of my class mates dropped out and I was the first one of the group to graduate!”

Equipped as a leader, Damaris did her final-year internship in a remote, rural community where she was the only doctor in charge of the local health centre. Through her service to the community, she became a positive role model for the women there, despite the traditionally held views that women should remain uneducated and not seek careers. Damaris also taught the local people about preventative health care. She touched the lives of many in the community and became well respected.

Much to the delight of her proud family, Damaris graduated as a doctor in October 2007. At present she is working in emergency medicine, but has plans to specialise in the future.

Damaris is astounded by God’s grace and goodness to her and is very grateful for Compassion’s Leadership Development Program. “Only God could have done what he has done in my life!”

The Child Advocate Network (CAN) is a passionate, dynamic and creative Christian advocacy movement, seeking justice for

children in poverty throughout the world.

Children are the hardest hit by poverty and have the fewest resources available to change their circumstances. We can speak up and take action on behalf of the most vulnerable of society.

Child advocacy is the ministry of raising awareness of the needs, neglect, rights and potential of children in poverty—then challenging and enabling those

within our influence to greater involvement and effectiveness on their behalf.

The CAN provides you with such an opportunity—to personalise your advocacy for children in ways that suit your gifts, while also promoting and partnering with specific campaigns all within a network of like-minded passionate people.

For example: Child Advocates can advocate through avenues such as speaking in churches, through music or art, by lobbying governments, finding sponsors for children or taking part in a social justice campaign.

C ompassion’s Prayer Partners Network is integral in strengthening the ministry of Compassion worldwide and is made up

of passionate Compassion supporters from all backgrounds with a desire to partner with us in prayer. Prayer is the most important way we can speak up on behalf of those who have no voice. It allows us to minister into the lives of children in ways that are powerful and eternal. Prayer can reach into the heart of issues that no natural force can touch. Prayer can impact the smallest child and the most powerful leader.

As a prayer partner, you will be provided with regular prayer updates to guide you in prayer for issues affecting Compassion assisted children and the countries in which they live.

We’d love you to commit to praying regularly for Compassion’s ministry. Prayer is strategic not only in changing the lives of individuals, but in changing communities, and ultimately nations.

C ompassion Church Partnerships are an exciting, new opportunity to link your congregation with Compassion and

churches in the developing world. They provide a way for churches across the globe to do God’s will together and seek justice for children in poverty. The mission is to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name through holistic child development.

Church Partnerships aim to mutually transform churches. In the developing world, churches are equipped to reach out to their communities with increased capacity and resources. In Australia, your church can further develop its worldview and

biblical response to injustice, while increasing its missional influence both overseas and in your local community.

Compassion will come alongside your church to provide tools and resources to help you engage in your Partnership. We believe Church Partnerships will transform the lives of the children, individuals, communities and churches involved!

Unite your congregation and unleash your church to minister to the world’s poorest children.Email our team at [email protected] or call 1300 22 44 53 for more information.

management of programs, and the purchase of goods and services for the direct benefit of the children in our programs. Compassion Australia withholds approximately 20 per cent which covers administration, fundraising and advocacy costs in Australia.

One hundred per cent of child, family and Compassion centre gifts are sent through Compassion to the child development centre where staff members assist the children and/or families in the purchase of appropriate goods.

Children and families receive no cash—benefits are only ever in the form of goods and services, carefully designed, delivered and purchased according to the needs of individual children and their families.
