2 Austral Company Profile 2012
Business Overview / Capability
Through its first 25 years, Austral gained national recognition for innovative marine piling and civil construction works. This reputation allowed the company to win marine contracts around Australia; from Cairns in Far North Queensland, to northern NSW, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and up the WA coast to Geraldton, Port Hedland and Wyndham in the northern Kimberley. Concurrently, Austral was completing civil and dam projects in regional Victoria and NSW and providing specialist subcontract services on large Melbourne infrastructure projects, such as the Citylink toll road.
The year 2005, however, marked a turning point for Austral with its first contract win for Hamersley Iron in Dampier, Western Australia. This first contract was a marine design and construction contract for Rio Tinto’s Project Engineering Group. The impressive execution of this project provided Austral the opportunity to win civil and structural projects throughout Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Pilbara Operations across most of their mine sites as well as continued marine works at Dampier. Over this period the company has developed its ability to work effectively in remote locations with excellent logistical support.
Since that initial contract, Austral has completed over 30 contracts and $100 million worth of work for Rio Tinto’s Project Engineering Group. It is a relationship that Austral is particularly proud of and has resulted in Austral being selected to participate in RTIO’s Supplier Recognition Scheme for the past three years. Over the years Austral has built a reputation for delivering quality construction works where safety management and continued system improvement have priority.
Throughout Austral’s growth in the mining infrastructure sector, its reputation in piling continues to be maintained. It is regularly engaged by tier one and mid-tier contractors such as Thiess, Abigroup, Macmahon, HWE, Watpac and Golding Contractors for piling, sheetpiling and marine works.
Setting itself apart from its competition, Austral continues to purchase unique and complementary plant. For its civil and mining services contracts, Austral is virtually self-sufficient with a fleet of excavators, loaders, watercarts, trucks, cranes and personnel vehicles as well as the latest concrete placing equipment. In 2010 Austral took self-sufficiency to a new level with a brand new mobile batching plant and agitators.
For piling and marine works, Austral operates its own floating and jack-up barges, state-of-the-art piling hammers and vibrators, tracked piling rigs, custom-designed frames, leaders and falsework as well as marine and land-based ancillary plant and equipment. Plant of this quality is in high demand and when Austral is not utilising its barges, hammers and rigs they are being hired by the industry. This specialist plant hire provides an additional revenue stream which complements our construction contracting.
Austral Construction manages national operations from its head office in Melbourne and new office in Perth’s CBD. With a multi-skilled workforce and dedicated management team combining over 100 staff, Austral plans to continue a controlled growth strategy towards $100 million turnover by 2015.

Health, Safety, Environment & Quality (HSEQ)
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY
Austral’s OHS Management System, which has been accredited to AS/NZS 4801 since 2000, is central to our commitment to safety. This system has been successfully implemented in all marine operations and land-based civil works, particularly in the strictly-governed environment of the mining industry. Dedicated professionals are specifically employed to maintain and improve the system on an ongoing basis.
We have refined our approach to risk management over many years to ensure that we provide a uniform approach to the risks ever present in our industry. We have an active Risk Committee at Board level to ensure proactive management of all our operational risks and their individual control measures. Numerous pre-construction risk assessments are conducted for every project – safety on the ground is our number one priority.
Essential elements of our OHS management system include induction and training, regular safety meetings and workplace inspections, consultation with workers and an ongoing program of hazard identification and risk assessment. A robust compliance, surveillance and auditing program ensures that prescribed safety principles, procedures and legal requirements are complied with at all times and that timely actions are taken to address any identified hazards.
Austral’s impressive OHS performance is evidenced by our continuous improvement in the reduction of workplace injuries and our exemplary level of workplace consultation and safety interactions.
