Our brand story Intengu is the onomatopoeic name for the fork-tailed drongo, a bird that minds cattle. The Xhosa believe that cattle heed the intengu’s call, like they do a herd boy’s, and that, in the herd boy’s absence, the intengu will take care of the herd. When a herd boy returns home during herding hours, his parents say:

CeliaTheart-ManagingDirector

Celia brings more than three decades of communications experience to Intengu Communications. She has worked as a journalist, lecturer and public relations manager in education, provincial government and the private sector.

The highlight of her career was her tenure at the Eastern Cape Premier’s Office after the first democratic elections in 1994. Here she excelled in providing support for setting up the structure of communications in the new provincial government, creating a visual identity involving people at grass roots, driving many high-profile events and promoting the province in general.

Her academic responsibilities have included lecturing communication, advertising, marketing and public relations up to MBA level.

She has been the managing director of Intengu since its inception in 2002.

SakhumziSomyo-Partner

Together with Celia Theart, Sakhumzi enjoys a partnership in Intengu Communications. A teacher by profession, Sakhumzi brings more than two decades of work related experience to the company. His work experience includes serving as a teacher at various schools for a number of years. Sahumzi also served on educational boards and as the Chief Liaison Officer in the Office of the Premier before being elected as the Executive Mayor of the Amathole District Municipality (ADM).

By July 2008, Sakhumzi had served ten years with ADM and become eligible for the title of Alderman. Alderman Somyo’s last term as the Mayor of the ADM ended in May 2011.

On the political front, Sakhumzi has displayed his leadership qualities from an early age and has immersed himself in various community structures. He continues to serve on many boards and councils.

Alderman Somyo has continued with his studies at the University of Fort Hare and has completed coursework towards his MPA.
