2 I (EURO)DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS I Overview
The compact DOCSIS 3.0-CMTS systems from Casa allow Kathrein to offer a new generation of
equipment which sets new standards in terms of flexibility, scope of functions, packing density and
value for money.
A significant feature is the complete separation of upstream and downstream channel capacity
within a single physical chassis. This allows the equipment to be arranged flexibly to meet the
actual requirements. This is achieved by use of in-house chip technology. Which delivers the
highest packing density on the market. For instance a C3200 platform with up to 80 downstream
channels and 16 upstream channels or also 48 downstream channels and 48 upstream channels
requires just a single 19" plug-in unit only three units high.
The sophisticated technology and highly integrated design ensure the best value for money. Very
low costs per channel and easy expansion by software upgrade ensure security of investment
and facilitate software upgrades.

C3200 – Universal and flexible
Because the design is modular throughout, the C3200-CMTS
can be adapted flexibly to the needs of small, medium and
large networks. Redundancy and exchangeability of modules
in operation ensure high availability. In the configuration 19"
plug-in/3 HU for instance, up to 80 downstream channels and
16 upstream channels can be operated. Further special features
of this series are explained below.

NOTE
The number of channels can be retrospectively expanded
at any time by software upgrade in steps of four channels
up a maximum of 16 channels per downstream module.
The upstream module DCU 08A can be expanded by eight
to 16 channels. The desired arrangement of upstream and
downstream channels can be fitted in the factory and delivered
ready configured. Modules can also be ordered separately
and retrofitted or exchanged at any time.
NOTE
The number of SFP modules required is determined by the
desired data rate and the specified redundancy.

Its sophisticated technology allows the C3200 to
exceed the requirements of DOCSIS 3.0, substantially
so in some cases. The very high channel bundling
capability of up to 16 channels (800 Mbps) in the
forwards path and up to 16 channels (480 Mbps) in
the return path permit fast data services.
The downstream channels can also be used as MPEG
video edge QAM in conformity with MPEG or DVB-C,
for instance for digital cable TV, video-on-demand,
interactive TV and network- based video recording
(DVR). The unit receives MPEG-2-over-IP/Ethernet
packets in multiple (MPTS) or single channel (SPTS)
transport streams. The MPTS is then demultiplexed
and the native MPEG-2 packets are forwarded to the
QAM interfaces.
The re-multiplexing function creates multiple channel
transport streams (MPTS) for the designated cable
channels. The PSI/SI table processing, the PID
filtering/substituting and the PCR de-jittering are of
course performed at the same time.
Both CBR and also VBR traffic for narrowcast and
broadcast applications are supported. The C3200
series is the only product that utilises the RF bandwidth
in the most efficient way and at the same time maintains
video quality by parallel use of tools such as statistical
multiplexing of the entire MPEG video and DOCSIS
traffic, together with dynamic scheduling of the MPEG
and IP traffic.
For configuration and management the CMTS
Command Line Interface (CLI) and SNMP operating
functions support features such as "Show cable
modem", "Show ARP", spectral management, CPU
and memory resource reporting and user privilege
administration. In addition, comprehensive IP functions
such as DHCP relay and option 82, multiple DHCP
servers, proxy ARP, IP sub-network bundling, IGMP
snooping, IGMP v2 and v3, Access Control List (ACL)
are provided.

The C1G CMTS system represents a new class of CMTS
devices which implement (Euro)DOCSIS 3.0 performance
features so that the service provider can offer cost-effective
highly scaleable broadband services such as IPTV, video
over IP, interactive games and conventional broadband
access and VoIP services.
Because of its extremely compact size, the C1G can easily
be installed in locations such as multi-dwelling units, hotels
and small hubs.
The C1G supports a downstream QAM port, two (Euro)
DOCSIS upstream ports and two GbE (SFP) network ports.
The configurations for C1G range from 2 DS x 2 US to
8 DS x 8 US. In addition, upstream and downstream channel
bundling, AES encryption/decryption, Quality of Service
(QoS) and many IP performance features are supported.
Due to the revolutionary compact size of the C1G and
the low cost per bit (Euro)DOCSIS bandwidth, it opens up
a unique opportunity for service providers to offer highly
scaleable broadband services for locations that previously
could not justify the cost.

The C1G CMTS is supplied in a compact sub-rack,
giving the operating company maximum flexibility in
implementing cost-effective solutions. The C1G is a
complete CMTS solution with a downstream QAM
port, two (Euro)DOCSIS upstream ports and two GbE
(SFP) network ports. As the number of users increases,
the configuration of the C1G can be scaled up from
2 DS x 2 US to 8 DS x 8 US. Further channels can
be added simply by activating licence keys by remote
access.
In Euro-DOCSIS mode the C1G offers a bandwidth
between 100 Mbit/s and 400 Mbit/s in the downstream
direction. In DOCSIS mode the C1G offers a bandwidth
between 80 Mbit/s and 320 Mbit/s in the downstream
direction. The C1G supports up to two logical channels
per physical channel via the upstream link.
The C1G supports the industry standard "Command
Line Interface (CLI)" and "SNMP" for configuration
and management. Performance features relevant to
operation, such as "Show cable modem", spectral
management, CPU and Memory Resource Reporting
together with user rights administration are available.
In addition the unit is factory-configured so that the
GigE ports and the CLI are activated at boot-up.
The C1G works as a layer-3 routine device. It supports
static and dynamic routing protocols. Multiple
standard routes can be configured, so as to guarantee
redundancy. Layer 2 bridging, VLAN, RIP, BGP, OSPF,
IS-IS, PIM-SM and L2VPNs are supported.
Comprehensive IP performance features such as
DHCP relay and option 82, multiple DHCP servers,
proxy-ARP, IGMP snooping together with IGMP v2
and v3 are available.
