Dalawa ba dapatang eleksyon?

WHAT’S with the Kenyansthat they dominate the sportof running?

As I have observed, physi-cally, their long limbs and lightweight body are some of theiradvantages when it comes tomarathon running.

Kenyans shamed local run-ners when David Kipsang andPeris Poywo swept the top

spots in the centerpiece 42Kevent of Sunday’s 2010Condura Run for the Dolphinsof Bohol races at the BonifacioGlobal City.

I’ve been a participant of this event last year and joinedthe 3K run event but finished53 rd out of the thousands of participants.

For three years, I’ve beendissecting the technique of marathon running to make mean effective runner but my

cardio is my Achilles’ heel. I

couldn’t breech my maximumcapability of three to five kilo-meters.

In 2006 when I went to Swit-zerland, I got the chance to jogat the high-altitude forest of Zurich three to five kilometersalmost every other day for threemonths. I enjoyed the fresh airand the lush forest that has atrail for trekkers and runners.

With the off-road trail, Iused an all-terrain Salomonshoes, but with the treadmill Iuse Nike 360, which cutting upthe slack of my troubled knees.

This year I’m hoping I could  join the Century TunaSuperbods Run 2010 in the at-tempt to prove to myself that Ican dominate the 5K run event.

My preparation is simple—I’ve been frequenting my meet-ing with the treadmill and runaround three kilometers with

a pace of eight to 10 kilome-

ters per hour. No changes inthe diet.

For the Kenyan (Kipsang),he ran a calculated race, strik-ing hard when localCresenciano and Elmer Sabalstarted to tire out after taking

the lead most of the way.Kipsang made his move inthe final five kilometers, slowlypulling away from the Sabalsiblings for good en route to awinning time of two hours, 38minutes and two seconds.

Strategy is also the key.The younger Elmer, who

tried to give a chase but fellshort in his bid to overtakeKipsang at the finish line, settled for second place, 57 sec-onds behind the Kenyan cham-

pion with his 2:38:59. His older  brother Cresenciano, a three-time marathon champion, tookthird with 2:39:40.

Poywo, for her part, extri-cated from her pursuers afterthe 15-kilometer mark to winthe race handily with her timeof three hours, 16 minutes and48 seconds.

Another Kenyan, SusanChemutai, took second placewith 3:19:52 while LuisaYambao Raterta carried the

fight for the local runners, fin-ishing third with 3:20:39.The champions received

P60,000 each while the run-ners-up and third placers wenthome with P40,000 andP20,000, respectively, for theirefforts.

A total of 8,500 runners sawaction in this five-in-one eventthat featured marathoners run-ning a portion of the Skywayand held as part of efforts toprotect and preserve the dol-phins of Pamilican Island in

Bohol.Eric Panique (1:12:53)outsprinted Alquin Bolivar

(1:12:54) and Alley Quisay(1:12:55) to top the 21K men’sdivision while MaricelMaquilan ruled the women’sclass (1:30:59) over nationalplayer Nheann Barcena(1:39:38) and JacquelineRohback (1:44:43).

Kenyan Willy Tanui, wholast week won the 21K Takbopara sa Libreng Edukasyon,  joined national athlete and

former marathon queenMercedita Manipol-Fetalveroin dominating the 10k races.

MOA SIGNING

VILLAR ADS ‘EXPLOIT’ KIDS, POOR – JAMBY SENATOR Jamby Madrigal, the

most outspoken and harshest critic of Sen. Manny Villar, criticized the

Nacionalista Party standard-bearerfor coughing up P2 billion for his cam-paign advertisements alone.

Madrigal, who filed a complaintagainst Villar in connection with theC-5 road controversy, was one of theeight presidential candidates whoshowed up in the "Inquirer First Edi-tion: Presidential Debates" held at UPDiliman.

The lady senator was asked by apanelist: “Political ads nowadays

seem to cater to the lowest commondenominator in society. Fromcatchphrases to jingles, they seem

to contain mainly rhetoric but no realsubstance. Do you think this typeof campaigning, including politicalendorsements from movie celebrities, does these not contribute to thedumbing down of the Filipinovoter?”

“People who have spent P2 billionin ads who think they can buyMalacañang have no right [to getelected],” she stressed. Her remarksdrew cheers from the audience, com-

posed mostly of students. One panelist, however, rebuked

Madrigal saying she herself used a

popular actress when she ran for theSenate.“Yes. But now, I have seen the folly

of my ways. And I will not repeat it  because I do not believe we shouldperpetuate lives that are perpetuated  by big budgets,” she said.

Villar has been outspending hisrivals in TV and radio advertisementsand was in fact one of the top adspenders for the last quarter of 2009,ranking no. 14.

REACHING the mandatory retirementage of 65, Chief State Prosecutor JovencitoZuno ends his 13-year career as head of over 1,800 prosecutors.

He is planning to stay in Batangas andspend his time with his family especiallywith his grandchildren.

Among those eyeing to take his postinclude Justice Undersecretary RicardoBlancaflor, Assistant Chief State Prosecu-tor Severino Gana and Quezon City Pros-ecutor Claro Arellano.

Zuno, who spent over 30 years in pub-lic service boasted of successful prosecu-tion of former President Joseph Estrada

for plunder; the convictions of formerCalauan Mayor Antonio Sanchez andZamboanga del Norte Rep. Romeo Jalosjosas well as that of Hubert Webb and sev-eral others for the Vizconde massacre.

However, Zuno said he is leaving his  job with bittersweet memories of his vic-tories in prosecuting cases, threats and theone which he considered the lowest pointof his career was when his name wasdragged into the Alabang Boys controversywhere the Presidential Anti-Graft Commis-sion (PAGC) had him and several otherssuspended over allegations of bribery.

Q: How did youget the part?

A: “It was theeasiest thing for meand I don’t knowwhy. I literally justwalked into theroom one day andmet Chris, and Iguess I heard thathe said he could notdo it with anyoneelse, he wanted me.I just had to do atest, I was so lucky.I went straight into

training and the wayit all happenedmade me kind ofoblivious to the factthat it was such abig movie - until I

saw the sets. Atfirst it was over-whelming, but youride on the intensityand the adrenalineof the scenes and

get into it.”Q: Did any of the

veteran actors giveyou any advice?

A: “ Pierce toldme, ‘ Man, it’s goingto get crazy for you.Be prepared. Staytrue to yourself.’ Iguess the attentioncould get a little nutsbut I haven’t reallynoticed it that muchyet, so it’s fine.”

Q: What kind ofboy is Percy?

A: “In the begin-ning you find outhe’s just like anykid with a learningdisability, he hasdyslexia. He’s hadto overcome thosedifficulties his wholelife and you find outthat this disabilityactually works tohis advantage as a

demi-god. The filmreally has a univer-sal theme, because

everybody goesthrough this kind of

journey of trying tofind out who theyare. That’s reallythe underlying

theme of the wholefilm along with a lotof action, adven-ture, and Greekmythology.”

Q: Are thingschanging at all foryou?

A: “They arechanging a little. Iwent to the mid-night showing of“The Twilight Sage:Newe Moon” with

was looking at usand it was reallyawkward, then they

all started to ap-proach us. That’swhen I knew thatthis was going to bea really big movie.”

Q: There is a lot

of talk about youbecoming aheartthrob, how doyou feel about that?

A: “Well it comeswith the territory andif that kind ofattention comesfrom being a part ofa good film, then I’mtotally ready for it.But I want to keepmy distance fromthat really, because

I want longevity inmy career. I justwant to do goodmovies like this oneand make smallerfilms too.”

Q: Why did youwant to act in thefirst place, you havealready made somegreat films?

A: “I started toact when I wasyounger, because I

wanted to dosomething creativeand I wanted get out

of school. I was alittle kid who justwanted to get outand have fun. Livingin LA, acting isaccessible and it

seemed easy to tryit out and give it ashot. Somehow, when I was reallyyoung I convincedmy parents to tryand it ended uptaking me here. Atfirst it was justplaytime.”

Q: What is yourbiggest extrava-gance with themoney you’ve been

earning?A: “Actually, I

spend a lot of timeat the movies – Ifeel like I just livethere. I also likemusic, learning toplay instruments.I’ve taught myselfto play the pianoand guitar and I liketo write a lot too.But I can’t think ofanything I like to do

more than makingmovies and watch-ing them.”

Our Daily Bread Our Daily Bread Our Daily Bread Our Daily Bread Our Daily Bread When a publishing company asked me to write an

endorsement for a new book, I said I’d be glad to. It appeared to be a helpful effort directed to young people,

challenging them to live for God in a changing world. But as I read the book, something troubled me. Al-

though it had lots of Scripture and great spiritual advice, it didn’t explain that the starting point for any relationship with God is salvation through Jesus Christ.

The writer seemed to imply that the essence of   living spiritually in modern society is based totally on action—good deeds—and not on saving faith in Christ. I didn’t write the endorsement.

The culture of the church is changing rapidly. Often left behind in the rush to find exciting new ideas is the

essential nature of the gospel. The apostle Paul was astonished that people so readily embraced a “different   gospel” (Gal. 1:6). What he preached was not from man, but a direct revelation from Jesus Himself (vv.11-

12). We must never let go of that true gospel: Christ

died for our sins, was buried, and rose again for our  justification, declaring us righteous before God (Rom. 4:25; 1 Cor. 15:3-4). This alone offers the “power of

God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Rom. 1:16). If we want to live for God, this is the only

place to start. — Dave Branon No one can say he doesn’t need

Forgiveness for his sin,For all must come to Christ by faith

To have new life within. —Branon Faith is the hand that must take God’s gift of

salvation.

MMDA to impoundpedicabs, tricycles

METROPOLITAN Manila DevelopmentAuthority (MMDA) Chairman OscarInocentes yesterday ordered thereimplementation of a 1990 Metro ManilaCouncil (MMC) ordinance prohibitingpedicabs and tricycles along major roads in

Metro Manila.“We will have them impounded for 30 days. They know that they are banned from majorthoroughfares. If we have to be harsh on them, then so be it, if this is the only way to ensuretheir safety,” Inocentes said during an execu-tive meeting with top MMDA officials.

Inocentes instructed the agency’s TrafficOperations Center (TOC) to form teams thatwould specifically apprehend pedicab andtricycle drivers operating outside their fran-chise routes.

Alarmed by the proliferation of thesesmall vehicles along the highways, the

MMDA chairman also authorized the TOCpersonnel to impound any pedicab and tri-cycle violating the MMC Ordinance No. 6.Series of 1990.
