HASTINGS, MEET THE HASTINGS … THEY’RE OUR MODERN WASTE-WISE FAMILY

They’re not the Flintstones, the Simpsons or the Jetsons ... they’re the Hastings family, and they’ve got an important

role to play in helping us manage our waste.

Mum Lucy, dad Harry and their kids Hannah, Joey and Timmy are a local animated family that have been introduced to encourage us to think about how we dispose of our waste, help us to look after our beautiful natural environment, minimise waste that goes to landfill and save on waste disposal costs within our community.

If you haven’t met the Hastings family yet, you will soon see them on our TV screens, on buses, in local papers, on our website, in schools … and if you look hard enough you might even spot them out and about in our community, helping at a local recycling centre or litter clean-up!

You might be interested to know that last year, Council and the community paid $4.6 million to bury around 60,000 tonnes of waste, with almost 10,500 tonnes of this coming from our red bins.

The more waste we can recycle, upcycle and minimise, the less we pay, so it makes sense to look at our bins, and place whatever we can into the yellow or green bin first.

This is where the Hastings family come in, they’ll be helping us choose Which bin? so that we can Choose green and yellow first, so your red bin won’t burst! It’s more than just a slogan, it’s about understanding what waste can go where. For example, our green bin takes food scraps and garden waste which are processed and turned into nutrient rich compost for our gardens.

Yellow bin items are recycled and reprocessed into new products including drink containers and newspapers, so it’s really important that we put recyclable items such as washed bottles and jars, cardboard and plastic containers in our yellow bin.

To find more information on all the items that go in each bin head to our website, you can even pick up a fridge magnet from our Customer Service Centres as a handy reminder.

So with the help of our very own Hastings family, let’s all do our bit to learn how we can be better at managing our household waste, and remember Choose green and yellow first, so your red bin won’t burst!

Blitz on Illegal Dumping a success > In a recent clean-up effort by Council, National Parks and

Wildlife Service and Forestry Corporation, 195 tonnes of illegally dumped material was removed from our local forests and bushland, including the removal of more than 80 cars.

Rural bridge improvements continue> The $3.75 million replacement of the O’Neill’s, Albert Street and

Bulli Creek bridges continue in Kendall and west of Wauchope, with all bridges planned to be replaced with new concrete structures by mid-2018.

Welcome to the autumn edition of the Community Now newsletter. It’s hard to believe that summer

has come and gone, Easter (and our chocolate feast) is behind us, and we will soon be turning our attention to how we stay warm during the cooler months.

Since becoming Mayor in August last year, I continue to be surprised at the amount of activity that goes on in our community every single day, and the skilled and dedicated team of people that make it all happen. It’s not just roads, rates and rubbish that Council looks after, it’s a broad range of services that keep our community ticking, ensuring we remain a great place to live.

From community events to community halls, parks & gardens to walking trails and footpaths these things all contribute to a vibrant, inclusive and connected community, where we all have the opportunity to live the dream.

Just look at some of the things we’re delivering for our growing community … sometimes it’s hard to keep up!

As always I encourage you to ‘have your say’ on the many initiatives that contribute to this wonderful community we call the Port Macquarie-Hastings.

Hastings Regional Sports Fields> Thanks to local residents who provided feedback regarding the plans for a new sporting hub in Wauchope. The

high-end fields will cater for a range of outdoor sport and recreational activities and also include an off leash dog park facility. To view the detailed concept master plan visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au/Hastings-Regional-Sports-Fields.

Lake Cathie Master Plan approved> Plans to rejuvenate the Lake Cathie Foreshore have been

finalised, with a $130,000 upgrade to the foreshore playground having already kicked off, and dredging and beach nourishment works planned to commence in May.

Safety upgrades to key arterial roads > Works to relieve traffic congestion and improve safety have

commenced on Hastings River Drive and Lake Road in Port Macquarie, adding to the extensive list of road upgrades that have already taken place across our region this financial year.

A positive future for Flynns Beach > A draft master plan is now being prepared following recent

community engagement sessions to develop the vision for Flynns Beach Reserve.
