Message from Board President and Executive Director The theme of Community Services of Venango County, Inc's (CSVC) annual report for 2011-2012 focuses on "Helping Hands". Throughout all of our lives, we receive helping hands; some we notice, some we don't. Great op-portunities to reach out to others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. In this calendar you can read the stories of families who found the strength to reach out to overcome crisis in their lives but also the courage to share their personal stories. They remind us that even in the darkest times, with just a little encouragement, hope and healing is truly possible. Inspired by stories such as these, CSVC will continue to extend our hands to lift up others to keep our community strong. Despite a year filled with challenges and resource demands due to our fragile economy, CSVC is as strong and effective as it has ever been. Our agency enters the 2012-2013 year mission-focused, on a solid financial footing and seeking innovative ways to enhance our programs so that we can better serve others. Especially noteworthy is that we secured new funding through the Maternal Infant, Early Childhood Home Visitation Competitive Grant. This funding allows us to implement a Parents as Teachers program in Craw-ford, Forest and Venango counties. This program will serve the families on the waitlist for Early Head Start in all three counties. With the leadership of our Governing Board, the diligence of our staff, and the generous hands of many friends and donors in the community, CSVC will continue to look confidently towards the future. You all have lent a hand to help those who struggle to hold on to their hope. Working together, we are stronger in the good works we provide those we serve. We hope your lives have been touched as well. With Gratitude, Courtney Cox Barbara A. Feroz, Ph.D. Governing Board President Executive Director Give of your hands to Serve ..... Mother Theresa

Volunteers
Lending a Hand in our Community “Being able to volunteer for the Welcome Every Child (WEC) program has been a very positive experience for me. Volunteering has given me the opportunity to make an impact on someone else’s life, includ-ing my own. Volunteering for WEC has strengthened my commitment to my community and I have been able to give back to my community for all it has given me. Being part of the WEC program I have come to realize how much one person can impact another when they give without expecting anything in return. Because of my experience with WEC I plan to continue to make volunteering an important part of my life.”

Empty Bowls
Our First Annual Empty Bowls event was held on March 15, 2012 at Wanango Golf Club, in Reno PA. Chefs were from: Wanango Golf Club, Classy Catering, Mosaic Cafe, Bella Cucina, Stuffed Tortilla, and AmaZing Foods and Ca-fé. Students from Cranberry and Oil City School Districts created and donated souvenir bowls for attendees to take home as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. Many local artists donated their art and many local busi-
nesses donated prizes for the Silent Auction and Raffle that was held at the Empty Bowls Event.
“I am really glad that so many restaurants came together for such a strong cause, to help the community. This event gave the restaurants in our area an excellent publicity event, and a chance to give back to our community in such a
meaningful way.” Michael Mansfield, Bella Cucina
“It’s was a wonderful way to teach the kids to give back to the community without expecting anything in return. The kids really put forth a lot of effort on each bowl. They tried to make their bowls special, knowing that they would be
given to someone and helping others.” Pam Marterella, Oil City Elementary
“It was a wonderful cause and it allowed us the chance to share our support for our community. Community Services does so much for our area. Another great aspect of the empty bowl event was our ability to work together with so
many chefs working for a worthy cause.” Cathy Exley, Classy Catering

Emergency Aid
“I was living out of my car trying to find places to sleep and wash up. One day while walking the streets, I ran into a police officer and told him my story. I was directed to Community Services of Venango County. They helped me find the Emergency Shelter where I stayed for over 30 days. When an apartment at Community Services of Venango County became available, I moved in and started receiving help. They helped me find work, services and all kinds of encouragement. I can’t begin to say how much
they have meant to me. They helped me to survive when I thought it was the end of the line for me.“ David

“For years, I didn’t know what I wanted to do in my life. I finally decided to call Community Services and sign up for the CNA clas-ses at the Venango Technology Center. The teachers were great and made sure we understood the material. I got my CNA certifi-cate and was hired on by a nursing home. I love my job, it is full time with benefits. If it wasn’t for this program, I wouldn’t be where
I am today. I feel good about myself and want to become an RN someday.” Mary

“I was having a hard time finding work. I filled out many applications and went on tons of interviews. Finally, I got a call about a job, if I could start later that day. I had no clothes to wear to work. Then I remembered PA WORKWEAR. I went to Community
Services and found the exact clothes, accessories, and shoes that I needed. I was able to start my job that day!” Dawn

“I learned about Families First Network when I received a gift basket from the Welcome Every Child Program when I had my first
daughter at age sixteen. Welcome Every Child introduced me to the Nurse Home Visitor and Early Head Start Programs which I
have actively participated in. It will be hard to close this chapter of our lives, but I just want to say thank you to Families First Net-

“My son was thrilled when the LEARN program honored him as a quality early learning “Shining Star”. Avery began attending Cranberry Child Development Centers when he was 20 months old. Over the past two years Avery’s preschool teachers and my family have been able to collaborate to meet his needs and prepare him for kindergarten. The teachers at this 4 star center were knowledgeable and recognized Avery’s unique needs. It is amazing how much Avery has grown and matured in the past year. I
am also thrilled that Avery was recognized as a “Shining Star”. He has the certificate he was awarded on his bedroom wall. He is doing amazing in Kindergarten and continues to be a “Shining Star”.” Michele

I didn’t know anything about disabilities or Downs Syn-drome but I’ve always been up for a good challenge. I believe in 7 years this child has planted more seeds than most of the peo-
ple I’ve met. She has unconditional love, goodness, and purity. Her energy and passion drives me.” Kurt

Since that time I have been blessed to be able to give back every year and donate in hopes that someone else in need will find
their Thanksgiving as thankful as we found ours. Thank you to Community Services for doing this, as you never know when you

“I am a young single mom raising a daughter. The baby's father had moved to Texas and I had no income. I lost my parents at a
young age and so I didn't have any help. Adopt a Family gave me the help and comfort that I needed at Christmas to make sure
my daughter would have a nice Christmas. The gifts were wrapped beautifully and had our names on each tag. What a help this

Maternal Infant Early Childhood Home Visitation Grant
CSVC received a competitive grant of $150,000 from the
Office of Child Development and Early Learning to im-
plement Parents As Teachers (PAT), an evidence-based
model, in Crawford, Forest and Venango counties. This
In-home program will serve 60 children and their fami-
lies from pregnancy through kindergarten entry. The
philosophy of PAT is to provide parents with child de-
velopment knowledge and parenting support. PAT will
also serve as a waitlist program for Early Head Start in
all three counties. A program supervisor and three
home visitors were hired to provide these services.
Moving on UP!!!
CSVC staff moved from the third floor to the
fourth floor of the National Transit Building.
Trenton Moulon, Executive Director of the
National Transit Building, Civic Center
board members, volunteers from Pathways,
Court Supervision and our staff were instru-
mental in making this a relatively smooth
transition!
