Thanks to Spectrum Community School Advanced Dance ClassOur seniors last month were treated to some amazing performances by

Spectrum High School’s Advanced Dance Class. The troop took the au-dience on a nostalgic journey through their performances which included jazz, ragtime, musical theatre and amazing acrobatics!

Special thanks to Lia Shannon, the Dance and Musical Theatre teacher at the school who helped coordinate the visit from the group.

Please see the Recreation section for upcoming Seniors Lunch & Learn predsentations and offerings.

Stamp out Graffiti & Own Your BlockBGCA is working with residents and

businesses to address graffi ti along Gorge Road. Together we can keep our community clean and graffi ti-free.

If you are interested in adopting a block and helping to keep our community clean and graffi ti-free we would love to hear from you.

Paint kits are also available at the Com-munity Centre and community members are invited to pick up a kit and paint out graffi ti on BC Hydro poles in their neigh-bourhood with the appropriate colour pal-let.

Each kit contains 2 quart size cans of paint, gloves, stir stick, scraper, opener, and a 3.5 inch brush. They are much easier and lighter to carry than your standard gallon bucket and the goal is to simply paint over a tag on a telephone pole in the same colour as the pole itself:

• Green for pressure treated poles

• Beige for non-pressure treated

• Dark Brown for creosote poles

• Gray for concrete poles

If you would like to join a work party, pick up a paint kit or would like more information please contact Rachel at the BGCA, 250-388-5251 or [email protected].

9 Burnside Gorge Community News: April 2019

Cool Aid is working hard each and every day to improve the welfare of everyone in our community.

building homes and wellness for over 50 yearsVicCoolAid CoolAid.org

In October, Cool Aid proposed a redevelopment of our Cedar Grove property that would add much-needed affordable housing to the neighbourhood, replacing two aging buildings with an attractive, purpose-built one.

At City Hall, we heard a range of concerns expressed from Burnside Gorge neighbours, with a focus on both height and density of the proposed design. We heard your concerns that – at six stories – the building was too high.

Cool Aid has revised our development plans, taking into account neighbourhood concerns.

Key revisions include:

• A reduction in the number of storeys from six storeys to five, to align with the Local Area Plan, and a reduction in the number of units from 82 homes to 72 homes (including 51 new, affordable, studio, one and two-bedroom suites)

• Modifications to the main floor and sidewalk along Gorge Road to include a commercial coffee outlet

Retention of a balanced mix of tenants will provide benefits to both the building ambience and the neighbourhood:

• 30 units will rent at income assistance rates ($375/month) with support services available on site

• 8 units will rent at affordable rental rates ($750/month)

• 34 units will rent at moderate income rental rates ($850 to $1500/month)

Other important features:

• The property will have a single, controlled entrance (rather than 21 entrances), calming the area

Architectural drawings can be found at CoolAid.org/210drawings.

We know that our immediate neighbours and other community members also have questions and concerns about how Cool Aid plans to manage and operate the building and any issues that may arise.

To help respond to those concerns we have posted our Operating Management Plan (CoolAid.org/opsplan).

Cool Aid will be a part of the Burnside Gorge community for many years to come. Contributing positively to the community, developing long-term relationships, and being a good neighbour is very important to us. We’re committed to doing the ongoing work with our neighbours to achieve these goals.

We welcome your thoughts and feedback: (250) 383-1977, Deanna Bhandar, Director of Real Estate Development.
