Mayor’s Message

It is my pleasure, on behalf of Uxbridge Township Council and Staff, to present our Spring/Summer 2013Community Guide.

As spring approaches, it brings with it many exciting opportunities to experience all sorts of wonderfulrecreational activities. Visit our trails and experience the wonder of nature coming alive after a winter sleep. We are very excited about the wide variety of programs that we are presenting to the public. We encourageyou to get out and enjoy the activities in the community. It is a wonderful way to become involved ineverything that Uxbridge has to offer, as well as meeting new people.

It was an exciting night in December 1901when the beautiful new meeting and concerthall on Main Street South had its galaopening, rising from the ashes of the originalhall built in the 1860s. Over the ensuingdecades, the Music Hall has played host toraucous political meetings and joyousweddings, thunderous rock concerts anddramatic moments when you could hear thequietest birds in the trees outside. Some of thegreatest names in the performing arts, fromguitarist Liona Boyd to actress RachelMcAdams, have enjoyed the Hall's fineacoustics and classic ambience.

Like many of the Township's halls, the MusicHall is overseen by a dedicated communityadvisory board. With its guidance, over thelast 15 years significant improvements havemade to the Hall's lobby, dressing rooms, audience areas and in particular its technicalfeatures: state-of-the-art lighting and soundequipment, projector and screen, even abeautiful period chandelier which raises andlowers according to the user's needs. The Hall

is busy with community theatre productions, concerts, dance classes and recitals, and awide variety of public events. But there'salways room for you! If you'd like to hold your event in a historic, beautiful intimate spacewhich still has all the bells and whistles, callthe Township's bookings manager, Karen Ryl,at 905-852-6761, and she'll set up a meetingwith the Hall's technical manager. Heritage Site: Foster Memorial

THE THOMAS FOSTER MEMORIAL

\

The Foster Memorial is located:4 km north of Uxbridge on Durham 1 (Conc. 7) on the east side of the road.9449 Regional Rd # 1, Uxbridge

The Thomas Foster Memorial was built for $250,000 in 1936 on a hill inthe countryside of Uxbridge Township. The Taj Mahal inspired itsstructure, which is just outside of Agra, India. The roof surfaces arecopper tile, and the entrance doors, windows, tracery and all metalparts are bronze. The beautiful stained glass windows are the work ofYvonne Williams, and are of hand-painted, fired and leaded glass, thecolour and designs are harmonious and are distributed so as to floodthe interior with soft, colourful light. The 22k gold mosaics with multicolours give elegance to this magnificent building. The floors are of richcoloured terrazzo and marble mosaics, wrought in symbolic designs.

On entering, one crosses the River of Oaths on which floats water liliesand lily pads. In the general design of the floor beneath the great dome, the motion, typifying life, radiates from the Greek letters “Alpha andOmega” which in turn flank the “Chi Rho” monogram in its earlyByzantine form, the Laurel wreath of victory over death encircles thecentre motif. Above, the drum of the dome is pierced with 12 stainedglass, leaded windows in the form of a gold cross. Circling the lowerpart of the dome, above the great arches in gold lettering on a field ofgraded blue mosaic is the inscription…‘Take this my body for it is done and I have gained a new life, gloriousand eternal’

ROAD WATCH

What is Road Watch?A community initiative designed to improve road safety by creatinggreater awareness and giving residents an opportunity to participatein identifying and reporting dangerous and aggressive driving in theTownship of Uxbridge.

Why have Road Watch? To help reduce Motor Vehicle Collisions and potential injuries andfatalities in the Township of Uxbridge.

What is Aggressive Driving?Aggressive driving is defined as excessive speeding, tail- gating, failure to stop and any other unsafe driving that puts others at highrisk for collision or injury.

How does Road Watch work?Citizen Report Forms may be used any time you observe an act ofaggressive driving. Record as much information as you can about theparticular aggressive driving incident that you witnessed. Thisinformation will help the police in monitoring high risk areas in ourcommunity. To complete the report, include the licence number, themake and colour of the vehicle, the location (as exact as possible) andthe nature of the incident. When you send in the report, it isimportant that you sign it. This helps safeguard the system againstabuse. Be assured that your personal information is for statistical useonly and is held in the strictest of confidence. Drivers reported willreceive a letter from the police, describing the unsafe or aggressivedriving incident that was witnessed. If a driver is reported more thanonce, the police will make personal contact with that individualregarding the reported problems in person or by telephone. Subsequent offenses may result in enforcement action by the policedepending on the severity of the incident. Remember, this is youropportunity to make our roads safer - the same roads you useeveryday. Citizen Report Forms may be picked up at any of the following dropbox sites:

• Canadian Tire• Fast Eddies Diner• Annina’s Bake Shop & Cafe• Joy Village Market• Shell - Coppins Corners• L.C.B.O - Uxbridge• Leaskdale Country Store

A Message from the Uxbridge Fire DepartmentMore fires start in the kitchen than anywhere else in the home - butthat doesn’t mean you have to get rid of your stove or eat out all thetime. There’s a lot you can do to help fireproof your kitchen and reducethe chance of a fire starting from cooking.

Both gas and electric stoves can cause fires, as well as toaster ovens, and any electrical appliance that can overheat. Be sure to follow theproper operating instructions when using your appliances

Most kitchen fires are preventable if these fire safety tips are followed.

Stay in the kitchen when cooking• Never leave cooking unattended. Oil or fat can ignite• Always turn oven and burners off when you are finished cooking• Always unplug electrical appliances when not in use• Keep children a safe distance from cooking

Stay Alert• Cooking requires you to be rested and alert• Avoid cooking when under the influence of alcohol or medication

Wear short or close-fitting sleeves• Avoid loose sleeves that may contact burners and catch fire• Avoid storing items on or above your stove

Turn pot handles in• Prevent burns and stove-top fires by turning pot handles towards

the back of the stove when cooking• When ever possible use rear burners. Pot handles that stick out

can be easily bumped or grabbed by a small child

Clean cooking surfaces• Keep appliance surfaces free of spills and grease that may catch

fire

Keep combustible items clear of stove• Keep curtains, dish towels, plastic containers and pot holders

away from hot surfaces

Operate Microwaves safely• Always use pot holders or oven mitts to remove food from

microwaves• Remove lids carefully to avoid steam burns

Don’t overload electrical outlets• Avoid overloading electrical outlets with too many kitchen

appliances• Carefully examine cords and discard any that are frayed, cracked

or damaged

Working smoke alarms save lives• Purchase and install working smoke alarms. Specialized alarms

are available for kitchen areas• Test smoke alarms monthly and for battery operated smoke

alarms replace batteries at least once a year

What to do if you have a kitchen fire?

Put a lid on it• To extinguish a grease fire, use a potholder or oven mitts and slide

a lid or a cookie sheet over the flames, then turn the heat sourceoff

• If the flames do not go out, immediately leave your home and callthe fire department

Oven and Microwave fires• If a fire starts in your oven, close the oven door and turn off the

heat source• For a microwave fire, keep the door closed and turn off the

microwave• Remember, if the fire does not go out, leave your home and call

the fire department

Use portable fire extinguishers• Portable fire extinguishers can be effective in fighting small

contained fires• Use the appropriate extinguisher and ensure that you are trained

in its use

If you have any questions or require furtherinformation please call the Uxbridge FireDepartment at 905-852-3393

Remember in the event of an EMERGENCY call 9-1-1
