Dear Friends,
A community foundation is a unique institution. There are foundations that derive their assets from one source and deploy them for many purposes, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. There are foundations that derive their assets from many sources and deploy them for one purpose, such as the Children’s Hospital Foundation. Then there is the quintessentially American invention of the community foundation, which derives its assets from diverse sources and deploys them for many purposes in its community and beyond.
Who is a community foundation? It is nonprofit organizations, government entities, businesses, philanthropists, and residents all working to make their community — Boulder County — a better place to live. It is e pluribus unum — from many, one.
2017 was a remarkable year in our country and community.
We heard heightened concern about issues we had always cared about — women’s health, immigration, civil liberties, LGBTQ rights, our environment, the arts, and so much more. And so, your community foundation launched a motivational campaign encouraging response to national concerns with local action.
The foundation also launched our Listening Tour, during which small groups gathered and participants listened to each other in forty-two open sessions around our county. Together, we learned what we care about most and what we hope to do collectively. Issues of inclusiveness and equity rose to the top. I hope you’ll read the full report at commfound.org/2017listeningtourreport.
The 10th TRENDS community indicators report was published in September 2017. It provided our community with current data brought to life through local stories and pointed a way to resolve and action. Online the report was made available in multiple new formats, and offline we personally reached more than 1,200 people with the information. Explore commfound.org/TRENDS.
Your community foundation continued its mission through granting $6.5M to nonprofit organizations, and the Open Door Fund reached a milestone $1 million endowment to support LGBTQ work. Leadership Fellows — a joint program between Community Foundation Boulder County and the Boulder Chamber — celebrated nurturing more than 300 people since 2009 towards expanded networks advancing inclusivity countywide. Pledge 1% Colorado marked $6M in grants and hundreds of volunteer hours to Front Range nonprofit organizations since its 2008 launch.
Above all, for me, 2017 and the foundation’s work was about the people.
Thank you. I’m grateful for you — magnificent, down-to-earth people — who care deeply about your community.
Thanks to you, Community Foundation Boulder County will rise to the future with vision and courage. And together, we will accomplish more than any one of us could alone.
Yours in community,
Jeff Hirota, CEOI encourage you to keep up with the foundation’s latest news by subscribing

2017 Selected Grant Cycles
Community Trust – $316,950The Community Trust is the permanent grantmaking fund of Community Foundation Boulder County, purposed to address needs countywide in these categories: health and human services, education, civic engagement, arts and culture, and animals and the environment. The most flexible and responsive of the foundation’s funds, it’s driven by community members who evaluate proposals in a competitive application process. Although there is no upper funding limit, individual grants typically range between $1K- $9K. In 2017, 122 grants were distributed.
Millennium Trust – $68KThe Millennium Trust was established as a permanent fund to serve countywide needs and opportunities into the future. The fund was created by donations from thousands of Boulder County residents who each gave their last hour of income in 1999 with an eye toward the new millennium. In 2017, grants were made to 11 local nonprofits based on the relevance of their work to the foundation’s newly-crafted Statement of Affirmation, which clarified the foundation’s countywide leadership during the year’s especially challenging socio-political times. View the statement at commfound.org.
15 Forever – $15KThe 2017 15 Forever Youth Advisory Committee awarded four grants to nonprofits that are working to overcome educational inequalities among local youth.
Open Door Fund – $37,750The Open Door Fund supports the strengths and needs of LGBTQ residents countywide. In 2017, the review committee sought proposals that addressed the intersection of multiple identities, supported underserved groups within our local LGBTQ community, promoted education and awareness about our LGBTQ population, encouraged connectivity among Boulder County LGBTQ people and their allies, and increased awareness or access to existing services for the LGBTQ community. Thirteen grants were awarded.
BRAVO Fund – $2,500The BRAVO Fund aims to improve the quality of life for Boulder County Latinos by engaging them in philanthropy that builds resiliency and strengthens inclusivity. One grant was made in 2017 to support the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center’s annual Day of the Dead celebrations.
Veterans Fund – $4,500The Veterans Fund supports programs that build community among veterans, foster education about veteran issues, facilitate
dialogue between veterans and the broader community, and provide a source of support for organizations serving the veteran community. Six grants were awarded in 2017.
