Worked with a Social Anthropologist (Marivee McMath –see references) undertaking consultation with the various groups associated with the river through holding focussed discussion groups. We investigated their views and attitudes towards the waterway. I was involved in reviewing the report back to the Council.

“Extensive consultation and research in the later part of the 1990’s highlighted concerns and opportunities associated with the Styx ecosystem. From discussion and consideration of the i ssue s , the 'Styx Vision 2000 - 2040' evolved and was adopted by the Christchurch City Council at its Council meeting on the 11 July 2001. This forged a powerful Vision and Future for the Styx River”. Reference: h t tp: / /w w w . thest y x . o rg . nz/ne w - z e a land/visio n o n e /

The Guardians of the Styx and the Christchurch City Council (CCC) achieved the protection of public access to much of the river through providing the CCC with a mandate to buy up land and create esplanades and reserves along the river, and also significantly, the removal of cattle and fencing of important fish breeding areas.
