Cardholder sets PIN upon activation of the card
Chip cards still contain the magnetic stripe

In order to activate Chip Cards and select a PIN, cardholders need to provide:
Date of SignificanceReference Number (located on the card carrier)
This information is used to securely identify the cardholder
New Card Activation & PIN Selection
The Reference Number is required for all future PIN changes

Card Carrier - Reference Number
The Reference Number appears on the Card Carrier when a new Card is received or replaced
Reference Numbers should be retained by the cardholder for any future PIN changes
New Reference Number mailers can be requested through the Scotiabank Customer Service Centre at 1-888-823-9657

PIN will become enabled after first transaction at a Chip terminal
Cardholders will not be prompted to enter their PIN
Terminal will automatically print a signature slip for cardholder
PIN will be written to the card
All subsequent transactions at Chip terminals will require a PIN

PIN Number - Changes
First Chip Transaction after PIN changes will require:
Cardholder must enter new PIN 3 timesNew PIN will be written to the card
When trying to use a new PIN, cardholders may receive a message on the keypad similar to Invalid PIN (try again)
Cardholder must enter the new PIN 3 times after it is changed inorder to script the new PIN on to the ChipTerminal will automatically print a signature slip for cardholderEven though the message indicates Invalid PIN, the cardholder must continue to enter the new PIN 3 times until the transactionhas been accepted

PIN Number - Changes
If a PIN is changed several times before the card is used at a Chip terminal:
Use the most recent selected PIN which will need to be entered 3 times
PIN will be blocked at a POS Terminal if entered incorrectly 3 times in succession
Cardholders must call 1-888-514-2924 to reset their PIN
PIN reset is effective immediately and the cardholder can attempt another transaction

Chip & PIN - Points to Remember
Cardholders will need to know their ‘Date of Significance’and Reference Number in order to activate their card and choose a PIN
Reference Number is required for the PIN selection process and should be retained by the cardholder for any future PIN selection
PIN will be enabled after the first transaction at a Chip terminal
If cardholders encounter point-of-sale terminals that are not yet Chip enabled, they will need to sign the transaction slip

Chip & PIN - Points to Remember
If a PIN is set and not used for 6 months to a year, it will likely be forgotten and must be reset
First Chip Transaction after PIN changes will require the cardholder to enter the PIN 3 times in order for the PIN to be written to the card
Cardholders should be reminded not to remove the card too quickly before finishing the transaction
When all else fails, have the cardholder change their PIN

Keep your Reference Number – you need it to select and change your PIN
Don’t forget your Significant Date – you need it for PIN selection, changes and to speak with the Scotiabank Customer Service Centre
If you change your PIN, remember after the change you will have to enter it 3 times at a Chip terminal
Don’t worry if the terminal says “Invalid PIN”, you have to enter your PIN 3 times in order for it to be written to the cardand your transaction will be accepted
