a letter from the publisherwelcome

The best things in life make you sweaty.

—EDGAR ALLAN POE ’’‘‘ You would think that after thirteen years that I would tire of looking at kitchen and bath remodeling projects, but I believe I’m more entrenched in it than I’ve ever been. I think the photos on your phone can give you a pretty decent “snapshot” of what matters to you. My photos are of my family—a large number of those are of my first and brand new grand-daughter Harper—friends, recent music venues and home and garden photos from houses I visit.

Our annual kitchen and bath issue is one of my favorite editions of the year. This year’s model is packed with a wide range of ideas whether you’re planning a remodel or just freshening up a room or two.

You’ll meet three local families who share the heart of their home and tell us what makes it special for them. And if a new refrigerator, dish-washer, oven or cooktop is in the near future for you, we’ve got a great feature on the latest and greatest in each category.

On the bath side of things, we showcase two baths from a lakeside Columbus home that are wrapped up in glistening, calming blues. Plus, we have a dozen master baths that are favorites from other cities where Housetrends is published. We hope they inspire you to create a secluded sanctuary of your own.

The hard work we put into making our homes just right pays off when we find ourselves gath-ered around an island sharing stories, or bathing our kids--or for some of us, grandkids--in an oversized tub full of bubbles.

Celebrate life every day,

Sam Wilder and the Housetrends staff

The telltale signs of a dated kitchen are easy to spot. It might be the paint color

on the walls, the knobs on the appliances, the faucet at the sink, or the laminate

on the countertops. F How do those compare to the signs of today’s kitchen?

F We’ve asked a cross section of Columbus area homeowners and the design-

ers behind their kitchens to share the latest and greatest in designs, features, and

appliances. Take a look at their choices to see how well your current kitchen

stands up. Or use their input to get cooking on your own remodel.

TransiTional over TradiTionalFor the first time since the

NKBA began tracking annual design trends, traditional is no longer the most popular design. Transitional, which is a blend of traditional and contemporary, is now the

most common style.

shifT in The woodCherry wood has consistently been the

first or second most popular type of wood for cabinetry, jockeying for the top

spot with maple each year. However, designers are slowly shifting away from

it. Some lesser-used woods being speci-fied more often: oak (now 22%); walnut (13%); birch (15%), and bamboo, which has doubled from 5% last year to 10%.

“I found

I could say

things with

color and

shapes that

I couldn’t

say any other

way—things

I had no

words for․”

Interior designer Laura Einstein of

Ultimate Interiors didn’t say this—

artist Georgia O’Keefe did—but she

understands the sentiment. Einstein

harnessed the power of color and

natural materials to create an organic

haven for a central Ohio couple reno-

vating their lakefront home. When

it came to choosing finishes for the

first-floor master bath and powder

room, the designer knew where to

begin. u “The client loves color, par-

ticularly blues, greens and lilacs, so it

was natural to jump-start the design

with that palette,” she says.

We’ll know it when we see it Every project needs a mantra and for Einstein and the homeowner it was, “We’ll know it when we see it.” For the master bathroom, “it” was Labradorite granite.

“It has an astounding depth of blues and greens with iridescent spots and reminds me of butterfly wings,” the homeowner says.

“The cabinetry we chose has a very organic and sophisticated feel. We fell in love with its soothing color and grain,” Einstein notes.

Einstein and her client selected chestnut oak Bentwood cabinets with a sandstone finish. “Chestnut oak has more character than regular oak with knots, checks and cracks. The sandstone finish is a semi-opaque stain that masks the grain pattern of the oak for a very soft appearance,” says Dave Norton of Ellis Kitchen and Bath Studio, who designed the cabinet layout. “The door style is Sona, and its extra-wide stile and rails create simple elegance,” he adds. The cabinet pulls are from DuVerre Hardware’s Jeff Goodman Collection and are made from environmentally friendly recycled aluminum.

The walls were given a soft color wash, which created a shade of blue that comple-

mented the floor and granite counters. OPENING SPREAD: The linear lines of the lighting, vessel sinks and faucets are balanced by the shower’s tile design. A

hand-blown glass vessel sink was the design inspiration for the powder room.

“After selecting our countertops and cabinets, everything else in the design process came intuitively, especially the wall color,” says Einstein. In order to achieve the shade of blue they wanted, the walls were given a soft color wash, a multi-dimensional technique. “This pro-cess enables you to achieve a color you cannot find in a paint color wheel,” says Einstein.

Horizontal vessel sinks have chrome faucets—from Hansgrohe’s Axor Massaud Collection—which flow like waterfalls. The horizontal and vertical light fixtures were hand-forged in Vermont at Hubbardton Forge. Einstein describes the linear lines and natural iron finish of the fixtures as “contemporary but very sensual.”

Pennsylvania Bluestone was selected for the floor to complement the Labradorite granite. Einstein used Seneca field tiles and glazed linen pieces on the shower walls. “The surround was made from blu-ish green field tile which was enhanced—a process the installer can use to darken the colors,” Einstein explains.

Refined by fireLaura Einstein and the homeowner had an idea of what they wanted for accent tiles and sought an artist to custom-produce them. They found their artist in Andy Rahe.

“I know the client’s children because I taught them at school,” says Andy Rahe, who is on the art faculty at Columbus Academy. “I looked at the stone and other tiles they had selected and created a design to complement them.”

Andy used stoneware clay which can be fired higher and hotter than other clays and is more durable as a result. The 12x12-inch tiles for the shower and the 4x4-inch backsplash tiles were given seven glazes and oxidation-fired to 2200 degrees Fahrenheit.

“I had shown Andy a sample of some-thing I liked, but what he came up with was far more beautiful,” the homeowner notes.

“This project was fun for me because the homeowners knew exactly what they wanted but were flexible in how to achieve it. I think it is nice for them to have some-

thing custom-made with a connection to their children,” Andy observes.

Aside from the custom tiles, there are not many accessories or art in the master bathroom, except a few pieces of pottery made by the clients’ children, Einstein notes, adding, “it’s always great to add sentimental items.”

Powder room powerhouseInspiration for the powder room’s design hit Einstein and her client when they spotted an ocean blue, hand-blown glass vessel sink by Bear Creek Glass. They paired it with a water texture glass coun-tertop by Alchemy Glass & Light, a Los Angeles-based boutique manufacturer of handcrafted home items. The floating vanity below is a Verona door style cabinet by Bentwood, with a pecan shell stain, from Ellis Kitchen and Baths.

Einstein designed a backsplash which reaches the ceiling using Seneca Tile’s handmade Venetian glass mosaics in silver and blue. A chrome Hansgrohe waterfall faucet complements crystal and pewter Schonbek pendants—shaped like invert-ed pyramids in three graduating sizes. The wide plank Asian walnut floor inputs a richness and depth.

The walls were painted a combination of colors to achieve a periwinkle-pearl sil-ver color. “The room takes on an ethereal ambiance when all of the elements are combined: shimmery wall color, crystal pendants, glass sink and countertop, and the mosaic tile,” Einstein remarks.

Laura Einstein says the key to the beau-ty of these rooms is “the artful combina-tion of colors, shapes and textures, and the quality and design of the products we used.”

Georgia O’Keefe would approve.

Dishwashers keep it clean

Bosch: Touting itself as the quietest brand of dishwasher in North America, the Bosch dishwasher sports sleek design and built-in hidden controls for a custom look; some feature recessed handles, others, a bar handle. Bosch received the Energy Star award this year for Sustained Excellence, reflecting its commitment to efficiency and green technology, including its optimum wash sensor and a concealed heating element. With such a large capacity, you can hold a dinner party for 14 and still fit all the dishes into one load.ABOVE AND RIGHT: Photos courtesy of Bosch

Fisher & Paykel: Fisher & Paykel’s revolutionary Double Dish Drawer fea-tures a one touch operation, separate drawers, and allows for independent wash loads and multiple cycles. Additional features include a selection of water pressure variants with precise water temperature settings and a flow-through detergent dispenser.ABOVE: Photos courtesy of Fisher & Paykel

GE: Though they offer a large vari-ety of design and color choices, technol-ogy and energy efficiency are staples of a GE dishwasher. Some of GE’s dishwasher technologies include: Smart Dispense, which automatically dispenses the correct amount of detergent, the Angled Rack Dry System, which angles glasses at the right degree for easier water run-off, and the Single Rack Wash Selection, which allows you to run just the top rack to save water and energy. Refrigerators keep it cool

Sub-Zero: The Pro 48 from this industry darling and pioneer of dual refrigera-tion helps consumers keep food fresher, longer. Says Michele Bedard, vice president of marketing, “All Sub-Zero PRO 48 models meet rigorous Department of Energy standards for residential use, consuming less energy than a 100-watt light bulb over the course of a year.” Bedard points out other features that make it stand out, such as full extension drawers, interchangeable refrigerator drawer dividers, and a pair of two-gallon stainless steel washable and oven-safe bins that fit under any refrigerator shelf to store smaller items. She added, “The PRO 48 contains two compressors that help maintain proper air conditions and prevent odor transfer between the refrigerator and freezer sections.”ABOVE AND RIGHT: Photos courtesy of Sub-Zero

Liebherr: German manufacturer Liebherr produces built-in, freestanding and fully inte-grated refrigerators. Some features of Liebherr fridges include: separate cooling circuits, revers-ible doors, LED lighting, a large storage capacity, a touch control system behind the door, BioFresh drawers on telescopic rails and a self-closing mechanism on freezer drawers.ABOVE: Photo courtesy of Liebherr

LG: A refrigerator should have a high IQ, right? For 2012, LG has updated its line of Smart ThinQ appliances. The new LG Smart Refrigerator hooks up to your home network and communicates with your mobile devices and television for a total food management system. For example, LG’s Smart Manager’s Freshness Tracker will advise you as to when the food in your fridge is about to expire. And if the age-old question “what’s for din-ner?” keeps you up at night, the LG tech-nology can actually suggest dinner based on the ingredients on hand. Thirsty for a cold soda or beer? With the Blast Chiller feature, you only have to wait a couple of minutes for your drink to reach “ahhhh” proportions.LEFT: Photo courtesy of LG

Wolf: Michele Bedard says that Wolf ’s brand new sleek, stainless steel convection steam oven is 25% larger than others of its kind in the market. “The external boiler heats water quickly and efficiently and can be refilled without interrupting the cooking process. The oven’s perfected precision technology senses the proper timing and allocation of steam, consistently creating ideal cooking environments for a broad range of foods and recipes.” And busy moms will appreciate the ability to decrease cooking time by up to 25%: “The Wolf Gourmet feature properly adjusts the time and temperature based on the amount and size of the food being prepared.”

Erin Tober, manager of Ferguson Bath and Kitchen Gallery says that Wolf is ranked highest in customer satisfaction. She says, “They have the highest quality construction, wonderful customer service, and innovations in cooking.”ABOVE: Photo courtesy of Wolf
