Newsletter by Email or Mail / Change of Info

Photographer & Registration Help Needed at Family Day of Learning

If you are receiving your newsletter by email and wish to change it to US

Mail or if you receive your newsletter by US Mail and wish to change it to

email, you can change this on 4H Online in your family profile section.

Remember, if you change your email or address, put the change on

4HOnline on your “Family” page. If you check the box “update” for all other

members with the same address, it does not do that for just choosing email

or mail, so you would need to change each family member.

Since we are not notified from the program that you have made any

changes, please let Jennifer know your new information or it will not be

changed in our lists used for weekly email and newsletter. Thank you.

Pat is looking for 4-H members or leaders who would be willing to register participants

or take pictures (can use 4-H digital camera or your own camera or cell phone) all or

part of the morning of Family Day of Learning. Please call or e-mail Pat at

[email protected] if you are available and willing.

Due March 15th

Columbia County 4-H High School and Alumni and Sale of Champi-on Scholarships are due by March 15th. They were advertised in the last issue of Rolling in Clover. Forms can be found online at: http://columbia.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/4-h-forms/columbia-county-4-h-scholarship-forms/ or go to http://columbia.uwex.edu/, 4-H Youth Development, Forms/Scholarships.

Expo — cont.

Objectives:

1. To provide youth with an experience in planning, preparing and displaying an

article or educational exhibit

2. To give youth an opportunity for self-expression verbally and visually in a safe

and supportive environment.

3. To provide youth with an opportunity to share with others what they have

learned during the discovery process while creating their Expo exhibit

4. To develop public presentation ability

Summary:

Unlike traditional science fairs which feature experiment after experiment; Inquiry, Innovation and Creativity Expo participants are encouraged to find something that interests them within their 4-H project areas and explore it using their 21st Century Skills like critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. By selecting a topic within a 4-H project area of interest, participates are able to take their Expo

exhibit, one step further, to the County Fair.

Whether it’s analyzing the different foods that are available to dairy cows, conducting an experiment, or creating an innovation that fulfills a need in their lives, the focus of

the project is completely up to the participant.

Sharing your Story:

This is not a judged event, however, each participant will be asked to set up their display and provide a short presentation about the discovery process used in designing and creating their project. Sample talking points that may be helpful in

crafting your short presentation are listed below:

What 4-H project area(s) does your exhibit most relate to?

What do you already know about this project area?

Why did you choose to focus on this project?

What question(s) are you trying to answer? Did you answer your question(s)?

What do you want to learn, try and/or discover about this project now?

Who/What can help you learn more about your project?

What resources did you use to help create your project (i.e. people, books,

businesses)?

What was the most interesting thing you discovered while creating your exhibit?

Would you do anything differently if you recreated your project?

What were your steps?

EXPLORE - Your Burning Project Ques-tion/s at the Columbia County 4-H EXPO

Explore, Innovate, Inquire, Create What is the Project EXPO? Unlike a traditional science fair which features experiments, the Columbia County 4-H EXPO encourages members to identify a question they want to answer about

their project. Members answer the question in a way that makes sense to them - com-pile research, create a prototype, complete a project, or do an experiment – it’s your choice! You’ll share the answer to your question/s at the EXPO Event. Added benefit! EXPO counts as a county-wide demonstration/illustrated talk for your project.

SOS for Wisconsin 4-H Military Kids

Help keep 4-H Military Kids Camps OPEN in 2017

Military service members make many sacrifices. And so do their children. Children whose parents serve in the armed forces experience many emotional challenges when their parents are away during a tour of service, and also when they return. They have been separated for months and sometimes for a year or more. Their parents miss so many important events — concerts, sporting events, hon-or banquets, club meetings, prom, and even graduation. When their parents re-turn, it is often difficult for them to com-municate with one another. Wisconsin 4-H Military Kids is a program that provides opportunities for service members and their families to partake in various outings including sum-mer camps for children of military men and women. Approximately 75 children attend camps at Upham Woods in Wisconsin Dells each summer. These camps provide children of military fami-lies with a place to go and share their feelings with other children experiencing the same emotions. They create friend-ships and outlets for sharing with one another. They have a few days to relax and have fun! The camps this past sum-mer were a huge success! Check out some of the pictures on the OMK Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/WisconsinOperationMilitaryKids?ref=hl. The U.S. Department of Defense provided funding for the camp, but recently cut funding. We need to continue to raise funds so that military kids can go to camp this summer. Please take a moment to

watch this video and/or share with your 4-H club members: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiQ36JSF-rc&feature=youtube.

Change Challenge

for Wisconsin 4-H Military

KidsCAMPS There are additional ways you and your club members can make 4-H camps pos-sible: 1. Place donation cans at local busi-

nesses. A coffee can may be used.

2. Conduct a special fundraiser. It could be a spaghetti dinner, a walk/run or a silent auction. Be creative!

3. Donate from existing club funds. If your club typically donates to local charities or causes, military kids would be grateful for your donation.

Such generosity would provide a great service to our men and women who bravely serve, and more importantly, pro-vide a special moment for their children who also show bravery. I can’t stress

enough how important these camps are to these children. When I visited camp last summer to speak with the partici-pants, I found out that some of them had been coming for a few years. I also learned that a few of the counselors had attended the camps themselves! Please help.

Ongoing fundraisers can be conducted through the summer of 2017. All dona-tions should be remitted via check paya-ble to the University of Wisconsin-Extension and mailed to:

Noah Samuelsen, Rio Go-Getters President, N4383 Jacobson Drive,

Rio, WI 53960

Please include a brief note indicating how the funds were raised. Donations are tax exempt. If you have any ques-tions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I hope to hear from each of your clubs by way of a check. I thank you and so do the campers!

This year, I’d like to challenge all 1,300 Wisconsin 4-H clubs to a Change Challenge for 2017 Wiscon-sin 4-H Military Kids Camps. Each club, during the months of March and April, can ask members to set aside spare change. At the end of April, count up all of the funds and write a check to UW-Extension and send it to me. The winning club will have their picture posted on the OMK Facebook page, the Wisconsin 4-H website and in the Columbia County 4-H Newsletter.

The Wisconsin Junior Targhee Sheep Association will be giving away a starter flock of three Targhee ewes in 2017 to a lucky Wisconsin youth. Applicants must be aged 12 -17 as of January 1, 2017, must be a resident of Wisconsin, and must not currently raise Targhee sheep. The winner must also be eligible and agree to exhibit their animals at both the 2017 Wisconsin State Fair open sheep show and Wisconsin Junior State Fair sheep show. The winner will receive a combination of ewe lambs, yearling ewes and/or brood ewes, and take ownership of the animals before any 2017 State Fair entry dead-lines. The Targhee breed has a long history in Wisconsin, and the purpose of this program is to promote growth and visibility of the breed along with promoting youth involvement and education within the breed. Applications are available on-line at both the US Targhee Sheep Association website (http://www.ustargheesheep.org/) and the A&J Nevens Live-stock website (http://myplace.frontier.com/~jrnevens/), and are due no later than April 1, 2017. For more information or questions, please contact Leslie & Jeff Nevens at 608-592-7842, or [email protected].

Area Animal Science Days

Regional animal science educational opportunities available to Wisconsin 4-H mem-bers. Specifically, Area Animal Science Days is a series of four day-long events held around the state in June where youth in the beef, dairy, horse, sheep and swine projects increase their decision making skills and knowledge of animals through judging and grading experiences. Events include evaluation of dairy cattle, horses and meat animals; dairy showmanship contests; hippology (the study of horses); and oral reasons work-shops. In addition, each site offers a variety of workshops for small animal projects, which may include rabbits, poultry, dogs, cats or llamas.

AASD strives: To increase the availability of educational opportunities in the 4-H Animal Sci-

How much will DNA/RFID identification cost? $11 per animal identified for required DNA/RFID tag identification. If your animal has an existing 840 RFID ear tag you can purchase and submit a DNA envelope separately for $6.00. Be sure to list the existing RFID ear tag number on the paperwork and DNA submission. Will my County DNA/RFID tag qualify for Wisconsin State Fair? Wiscon-sin State Fair will accept all DNA/RFID samples submitted through WLIC by the Wisconsin State Fair identification deadline postmark. Samples received after the Wisconsin State Fair identification deadline postmark will be accept-ed; however, the animal associated with the samples will have limited State Fair eligibility. Visit the WLIC website (www.wiid.org) to verify which counties are participating in the statewide DNA/RFID identification program. Should I notify Wisconsin State Fair that my animal has been DNA/RFID identified? You DO NOT have to notify Wisconsin State Fair at time of iden-tification. Wisconsin State Fair will receive all animal identification documen-tation from WLIC after the Wisconsin State Fair DNA/RFID identification post-mark deadlines. Potential exhibitors are required to submit their Fair entries (online or paper) prior to the June entry deadlines by entering directly with Wisconsin State Fair. DNA/RFID identification is NOT your entry to the Fair. What if my County is not participating in the statewide DNA/RFID pro-gram? No problem! Request Wisconsin State Fair DNA/RFID identification through WLIC. Make sure DNA and required paperwork is returned to WLIC by the Wisconsin State Fair identification deadline postmark listed above. If your county is not participating check with them for their requirement dead-lines.
