“Color Mixing for Oil Painting” For beginners or anyone who wants a refresher class on color) This one-day workshop is for everyone who loves color but doesn’t understand how to mix color and make it work on a painting. We will go through the basics of color theory but also discuss how and why certain pigments (paint colors) mix better than others. Students will practice mixing colors first. Then students will work from a colorful still life, and mix the colors that they see. ————————————————Supplies—————————————————— Oil Paint (Winsor-Newton, Grumbacher, Holbein, Rembrandt are among good brands - please get artist grade, not student grade if possible) Titanium White (large size) Black Ultramarine Blue Prussian or Pthalo Blue Pyrrol or Cadmium Red Alizarin Crimson Lemon Yellow Cadmium or Hansa Yellow Medium Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna Burnt Sienna Burnt Umber (---you may bring any other colors you already use-----) Brushes (hog bristle or equivalent synthetic brushes) Filberts: large, medium, small sizes (12, 8, 4) Brights: same as above Other supplies: Good metal palette knife for mixing color (important!) Canvas pad for mixing practice Canvas boards for painting: about 16x20” (I like Centurion Oil-Primed Linen boards) Liquin for painting medium Turpenoid original or Gamsol and container for the solvent Large palette, good for mixing lots of paint, 12x16 or larger (disposable is fine) Drawing supplies - vine charcoal, erasers, etc. Paper towels, soft rags or baby wipes Value finder key card (grey scale) Digital camera to take photos of the set-up for continuing work at home
