    Requirements for Admission to the 5-Year

    Master of Science or Master of Education

    Initial Licensure Program Have been admitted to the University of Mary

    Washington

    Have attended one of the Education DepartmentsGeneral Information Session

    Have taken and passed the Praxis Core AcademicSkills for Educators tests (Reading, Writing andMathematics) or have qualifying substitute scores.

    Have a 2.5 or better GPA on at least 12 UMWcredits.

    Apply by October 1stfor Spring admission and byFebruary 1stfor Summer or Fall admission.

    There are several ways in which a

    student may satisfy the Praxis Core

    Academic Skills for Educators testrequirements.

    Praxis Core

    Students may pass Praxis Core by earning a score at or above

    the scores on each of the following subtests:Reading 162

    Writing 156

    Math 150

    SAT as a Substitute Test for Praxis Core SAT taken After April 1, 1995 a score of 1100 with at

    least 530 on the verbal and 530 on the mathematicsSAT taken Prior to April 1, 1995 a score of 1000 with at

    least 450 on the verbal and 510 on the mathematics

    ACT as a Substitute Test for Praxis Core ACT taken After April 1, 1995

    a composite score of 24,

    with the ACT mathematics score no less than 22, and

    an ACT English Plus Reading score no less than 46

    ACT taken October 28, 1989 to April 1, 1995 a

    composite score of 21, with the ACT mathematics

    score no less than 21, and an ACT English Plus

    Reading score no less than 37. (Due to VDOE

    regulations, ACT taken before October 28, 1989 will

    not be accepted.)

    VCLA plus Math as a Substitute Test for Praxis Core

    A composite VCLA score of 470 (reading and writing) may be

    substituted for Praxis Core reading and writing exams.

    Math proficiency must be demonstrated by one of the following:

    Praxis Core math score greater than or equal to 150

    SAT math score greater than or equal to 530 (after April 1, 1995)

    SAT math score greater than or equal to 510 (prior to April 1, 1995)ACT math score greater than or equal to 22 (after April 1, 1995)

    SECONDARY ENGLISH PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS WITH

    VIRGINIA ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTSMajor program: No pass/fail courses.

    UMW Requirements for the English Major:

    Thirty-six credits in English, Linguistics, and Communication courses, as follows: LING 101;

    ENGL 295; five upper-level literature courses; one 300-level linguistics course; one 300-level

    writing course, one 400-level seminar, six additional credits from the following: ENGL 200,

    any of the departments 300- and 400-level courses, department-sponsored internships, and

    individual studies.

    Specific and/or Additional STATE endorsement requirements for English license grades 6-12

    *Literature: Courses must include the following: British literature--English 381 or 382;

    American literature--English 355 or 356; World literature--English 206;

    Ethnic/minorityliterature--English 243, 328, 329, 351, 353, 368, or 376 other

    courses as approved; and Literary theory/criticism--English 295.

    *Language and Composition: Courses must include the following: Linguistics 101,English 307,and English 302; two Writing Intensive courses with an ENGL prefix; and

    one 300-400 level Linguistics course. English 312 is recommended.

    *Oral Language: Courses must include Communication 205 or 206.

    *Communication arts: Chose at least one of the following courses:

    English 200, 207, 245, or 380; Communication 481 or 482; or Theatre 111.

    PreK-12 VISUAL ART PROGRAMREQUIREMENTS &

    VIRGINIA ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Major program: No pass/fail courses. Requires 2.0 overall GPA.

    UMW Requirements for the STUDIO ART Major:

    Thirty-nine (39) credits, to include ART 104, 105, 114, 115, 120, and anArt History at the 200 level or above. An additional twenty-one (21)

    credits in Studio Art at least six credits at the 200-level, twelve (12) credits

    at the 300-level or above and Studio Art 474: Professional Practices in

    Studio Art.

    Additional STATE requirements for the Visual Art license grades PreK-12 :

    Students must take at least two of the Following courses: Studio Art 223-

    Ceramics I, 224-Printmaking I, 231 Sculpture I, 242-Painting I, 263- Textile

    Design.
