PRESIDENT’S REPORT Season number sixty-two was for the most part washed away after Christmas, however the times we did get on to play provided plenty of interest and entertainment befitting a year of cricket on the Plateau. When we look back on 2016/17 we will not only remember it for the week after week of torrential rain and storms, but more importantly as the season CPCC entered it’s first ever Girls team. The clouds cleared just enough for a senior and two junior premierships and a number of sterling performances turned in by club players.

Around September last year, a group of girls registered through CPCC for the Friday night T20Blast program. The girls had so much fun we were able to form a team and enter them after Christmas into the new MWJCA Sixers girls competition held on Saturday afternoon. On 28 Jan, 2017 at a little after 2pm at Manly West Oval, the first ball was faced by a CPCC girls team. This is a significant occasion for the Club as interest in girls cricket is exploding. CPCC has a proud history of female involvement through participation in the boys teams going back to pioneers like Laele Burke, Ariel Norris and Emily Carden through to CPCC’s first international representative player in Michaela Turik. A big thanks to Paula Horstead and Camielle Handley for their enthusiasm and effort in organising the girls.

The season marked a period of generational change at our top playing level. Our young lions finally relieved club stalwarts of duty in the top grade after many years of fighting on and keeping our flagship team competitive. Tom Carden took over the running of a now relatively youthful 1

st Grade

team well stocked with ex CPCC juniors The team performed admirably mixing it with the best against some strong opposition and will certainly benefit from the season’s experience in 1

st Grade. Speaking of ex CPCC Juniors, it was fabulous to see Dom Wheeler selected to play for the Manly

Grade Club. Despite not being in the Pathways program due to being older, Dom took the long way round by playing for Shires higher grades in the hope that his performances on turf would be recognized. They were, and he defied the system proving the quality of many ‘Park’ cricketers. Congratulations Dom. It’s encouraging to see the Pathways program has now been amended for 17/18 to allow cricketers greater opportunity at cracking rep cricket without necessarily having to leave their home Club to go through avenues such as Shires.

Brodie Elliott took on the task of assembling a 2nd

Grade team. Whilst this meant much time, energy and frustration in getting a team on the park each week, those that played thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Brodie received the B&B Trophy in recognition of his selfless efforts as he also supported the 1sts by rotating and providing players even though 2nds were short and for a while, competing for a finals spot.

CPCC entered two teams into 3rd Grade with the younger ‘Gold’ team making it all the way through to the Grand Final. Given the monsoon that

occurred that Saturday, I am still scratching my head as to how they managed to get in sixty overs even at the porous Lake Park to set themselves up for a run chase on the Sunday. That they were successful in winning and taking out their third premiership in a row is testament to the quality of these guys and their tight knit team. Two of their number, Pat Koch and James Bourcier were engaged in an epic season long battle for the Bruce Shearer award with Pat winning by a nose in the end.

Our Junior teams were again well turned out thanks to the efforts of a great group of coaches and managers, ably supported behind the scenes by Vicki Carden and Jocelyn Huxley. Fundamental changes to competition formats with the introduction of T20 games and finals were generally not well received (particularly in the case of T20 games). In the end, our U11/2 Energy and U12/2 Flash teams finished as Premiers. CPCC players were again well featured in the MWCA Rep Teams with several players taking out best performance awards. Special mention to senior players Ryan and Ben Blackshaw who instructed the In2Cricket program on Friday nights, in addition to coaching their U13s team. Just reward that they were in the senior 3

rd Grade premiership winning team. Thanks guys, together with Tom Carden, Brodie Elliott and Matt Richards, it’s great to see

our ex-juniors continuing to be so heavily involved with the Club on a number of levels. On this front, I’d like to acknowledge Dom Wheeler for the eight years coaching the Neutrons team – great service & commitment considering he is still a young man.

I’d also like to acknowledge Social Secretary Tom Carden for his efforts this season which also included negotiating a sponsorship agreement with the Master Builders Club at Dee Why. The Builders now financially contribute to the operation of the Club, as well as warmly accommodating our players after games and for other events throughout the season. I’m sure all those who have attended will agree, the recently renovated Builders Club is a very comfortable venue and ideal location as our new ‘club house’. The extra sponsorship dollars allowed us to engage our first ever ‘Club Coach’ with the appointment of ex-NSW Shield player & local Marty Haywood. Marty ran the mid-week training sessions and the boys really appreciated the extra focus on training and mentorship Marty was able to provide. Unfortunately other work commitments has resulted in Marty being unable to continue in this role however we hope to engage someone else for 2017/18.

Sadly, I report the passing of ex-CPCC junior Craig Stanton on 18 May 2017. Craig played both juniors and seniors with Rob Minnett and myself and was a member of our B3 Premiership winning team in 1986/87. Craig was an extremely talented batsman and golfer and his father Frank (well known for coaching Manly, Balmain and Australian Rugby League Teams) coached us to an U10 premiership in our first year of cricket.

There has been no shortage of controversial issues in the off season to keep abreast of. The shortage of sports fields on the Northern Beaches has occupied plenty of space in the Manly Daily in 2017. Please note that the CPCC committee does not support any proposal to convert Warringah Golf Course to playing fields for other sports. Warringah Golf Course is a valuable, accessible, affordable and well utilised recreation and sporting facility. It is also a beautiful green belt in the midst of a heavily developed section of the Northern Beaches. We must demand better options from our elected officials. We are sure there are innovative, sustainable and intelligent solutions to this issue which protects valued resources like Warringah Golf Course and caters for the growth in other sports.

In winter 2017 Cricket Australia announced major changes to junior cricket formats. There are a number of positive changes which should make the game more fun and engaging for the younger age groups. There are however some changes which are a concern as they threaten to change the fundamental nature of our game as well as compromising safety. The shorter length of the pitch for age groups using a hard ball is of particular concern and CPCC have raised safety concerns with Cricket NSW who have assured us that no increase in player risk was found during their extensive trials of the new formats. We will monitor this closely and work with the MWJCA to ensure the new formats are implemented in the best possible way for cricket on the Northern Beaches.

The growth in cricket generally, increased demands on clubs and pressures on volunteers time prompts me to again appeal to all parents and older/senior players to please look out for, and consider opportunities to join our committee to help us provide quality cricket experiences for our community for a 63

rd time.

Col Huxley – President

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Well done to our 3rd Grade Gold team for not only making the semi-finals, but they played an amazing Grand Final and brought home the silverware. Congratulations to Darren McDermott’s team on a great season especially since this is the 3rd season in a row they have won a Premiership. Our other 3rd Grade team were unlucky not to make the finals, needing only to win either of their last 2 matches and they only needed 2 more competition points to qualify. The 1st grade competition was made up of only 5 teams meaning 3 games of the 15 Round season would be byes. It also meant that only the top 3 teams qualify for the finals. Both 1st and 2nd Grade struggled for numbers most of the season & while neither team made the finals, both teams had very enjoyable seasons. Well done to our 4th Grade development side on finishing a respectable 5th and a special mention to Andrew Cameron for becoming CPCC’s newest member of the Centurion Club. The following table shows how all the teams finished in the regular and post seasons:

It remains extremely encouraging how well the Juniors at Collaroy are operating, as well as enjoying their cricket and thriving at CPCC. I do however, wish I knew the secret to keeping them at CPCC and playing Saturday afternoon cricket. We are currently at less than 15% of Junior CPCC cricketers converting into Senior CPCC cricketers. 10 years ago I never would have dreamed I would be saying that. This does create a challenge for us to double or triple this conversion rate to help build CPCC into an even stronger club. Yes, this requires the assistance of our dedicated volunteers and we are always looking for more. In the short term, there are changes to the rules for upcoming Junior seasons. Shorter pitch lengths and shorter games risk turning the game into a hit-and-giggle type of sport and I sincerely hope that I am wrong about that but the longer form of the game would have to be at risk with the current proposed rules changes. I’ll finish on a positive note by saying well done to the under 11 & 12 teams that won Premierships in their grades.

Off the field was another great season at Plateau. We welcomed our new Sponsor the Master Builders Club at Dee Why. We seem to have fitted in quite well down at our new club and special thanks to Tom Carden for getting this off the ground. Keep the Bar Tabs coming. Tom also instrumented our end-of-season reverse-Nelson-Bay visit to the South Coast to a brand new location, Culburra Beach. Another fantastic weekend, this time at a holiday house, beautifully appointed with a games room, ping-pong table, a dart board, tape deck, Foxtel, air-hockey, a mini fruit-bat and let’s not forget “Pot-Plant gate”. What more could you possibly ask for??? Special thanks to our Wonthaggi

legend Mr. Nick Johnson for winning over $1300 on a quaddie and shouting a large amount of beers at the Culburra Beach Bowling & Recreation Club where the entertainment was as fabulous as you thought it might not be. The Christmas dinner saw a revival of our Heads of State theme from a dozen years ago. Some fabulous outfits including Mr. Trump (Andrew Howson), Apu (JPD), Fidel (Tom), Julia (Emily) and it was Nick that came up trumps with his hauntingly beautiful effort as the Pope.

On the agenda for mid-2019 is another CPCC Tour to England. We are planning to visit Cornwall, Blackpool, somewhere else in England, then Dublin and finish in Amsterdam. The possibilities are endless for a ridiculously good time. Plans and fixtures will be organised in the next few months and anyone interested in attending, please let me know.

Lastly & sadly we lost Craig Stanton who Col and I used to play both Junior and Senior cricket for CPCC. Craig was a true character and took the words larrikin, spontaneity, natural sportsman and uniqueness to the next level. Tragically, Craig was involved in a car accident in 1993 and he never fully recovered. I went to his funeral on the Gold Coast in May and caught up with Craig's mum Maureen, dad Frank and his 2 sisters Leanne and Siobhan who I haven’t seen in decades, so it was great and very moving to catch up with them. Andrew Ward (son of well-known local Doctor Chris Ward), who Craig and I used to play cricket with, gave the eulogy and did an amazing job. Truly sad to see Craig pass, rest in peace.

TEN SEASONS AGO

The 52nd

Annual Report for season 2006/07 was choc-a-bloc reflecting a period where plenty was happening for the club. The graph showed a continuation up with 15 junior teams and 6 senior teams entered into the Saturday competitions in what was an Ashes Tour year. The significant aspect of the junior registrations was that it marked the first time we had a team in each junior age group since Dave Quarford’s program to resurrect our junior club commenced ten years previous. Speaking of the Ashes, the Club held our own ‘Ashes’ match when a CPCC XI played an England XI at Graham’s reserve. The England XI included former English test spinner and now test umpire Richard Illingworth with CPCC being gracious hosts with regard to the result.

For the first time in the Club’s history we gained our own storage area that wasn’t under someone’s house when we were allocated space in the Youth Club to put our cricket gear. Whilst that was a tick for Council, they got a cross for the condition of Vic Huxley Oval and the annoying issue of the sprinklers randomly coming on during matches and training sessions. The outfield of Plateau Park literally hit rock bottom as it was hard to determine what was field and what was carpark for the first half of the season. In another case of CPCC being ahead of the game, we had the aim to achieve 1 x accredited Coach per team, ten years before Cricket Australia’s requirement (which is being implemented in 2017/18).

The six senior teams entered included a team of refugees from Seaforth. Led initially by Steve Bull, these young guys started their solid period with the club and included the likes of Anthony ‘AJ’ Johnson (of Lateral Estate fame) and current U9 Volts coach Andrew Graham. A team contact also supplied a quantity of XXXX Gold merchandise which still lingers around the Club. A decade ago the finals were also fittingly

washed out contributing to four of our teams losing semis but advancing the A1s. Rain was to then cruel them of a chance of winning the Grand Final against Seaforth. Our firsts made it to the GF despite losing star Pete Henriksen for a number of weeks with a sprained ankle after he stepped on the side of the pitch at Forest High whilst celebrating clean bowling an opponent. The standout individual performance however was the A3’s Jason Ferris who won the Shearer with 1280 points – 400 more than second place. ‘Snags’ also broke the A3 MWCA and Pete Henriksen’s CPCC records for season runs with 755 and took out the MWCA Cricketer of the Year.

The social scene was rolling along with an ‘Aussie Icons’ themed Christmas Dinner being taken out by Dan Peters as Ritchie Benaud. CPCC were victorious against Manly Breakers in the ‘Chewy Cup’ match and Rob Minnett and Michael Rohanek won the Double Wicket competition. The Nelson Bay tourists dragged themselves to Mandalong on the way home to play a Presidents v Captains XI game and CPCC’s Winter Baseball team ‘The Towers’ won a premiership. To top off a great year, the financial coffers were topped up by a $7k profit from selling meat trays at the Brooky Pub. It was another memorable season for CPCC.

VALE – Craig Francis Stanton Ex-CPCC junior and B3 Premiership winner Craig Stanton passed away on 18 May 2017 aged 48. Craig and family had endured a difficult time since he suffered serious injury in a car accident in Queensland 23 years ago.

The Stantons lived in Suffolk Ave Collaroy Plateau where Craig went to Collaroy Plateau Primary School. He played both juniors and seniors and was a member of the B3 Premiership winning team in 1986/87. Craig was an extremely talented sportsman, particularly as a cricket batsman and golfer. Craig’s father Frank (well known for coaching Manly, Balmain and Australian Rugby League Teams) coached the CPCC U10s to a premiership in 1977/78. This team included Craig, Rob Minnett, Bob Vere, Greg Luckman and Col Huxley.

The ‘Randolph Beddows’ Flag

Randolph Beddows is well known in Manly Warringah cricket circles, particularly amongst the First Graders. There is no keener cricketer in the District than Randy. Whether it has been following Martin Shield, the old Forest Hawks, Balgowlah or of late Harbord Bowling teams, Randolph has been a regular on the sidelines for years. Given a chance to field for any team who was short, Randolph would be out like a shot invariably to fine leg. Otherwise, he’s more than happy to have a chat and reminisce. In 2004 Randolph returned a piece of CPCC history he had been custodian of for 25 years. The small flag, one of many which used to be attached to wooden stakes and employed as boundary markers, was left behind after a match in the late 60’s. It is the last known survivor. It was decided to honour the first grade player with the highest ‘Shearer’ Points total for the season with the creation of this trophy.

The ‘B & B’ Trophy (Brian & Barbara Moore)

This perpetual senior Club Award was added during the 2001/02 season courtesy of ex-clubman Brian Moore. Brian, who re-visited the Plateau for the first time since returning to England after the ’72 season, was thrilled to see the Club continuing on as strong as ever after all these years. Brian and his son Ian who moved to Australia from England in the sixties, played for several seasons with the Plateau with Brian captaining the 1971/72 premiership winning C2 team.

It was agreed by the Executive that the Award be presented to a player who displays an effort, both on and off the field which is above and beyond that which is normally expected. The winner is decided by vote of nominations received from team Captains.

Rothmans sponsored this trophy, first awarded in 1968. Originally introduced for the winner of the Club’s Annual Single Wicket Competition, this award now includes the winner of a Double Wicket Competition, a variation of the single wicket concept. Both events involve club members (individually or in pairs) playing off against each other over competition rounds to decide finalists and eventually a winner/winning pair. Results are determined by runs scored and wickets taken, against drawn opponents. The event was resurrected in 2006 after a 17 year hiatus.

1st

Grade

It was a pleasure to take over the captaincy of the 1st Grade side last season, in what still is somewhat of a rebuilding phase for the top CPCC teams. Many thanks to Rob for his years of service doing what can be a very challenging and stressful job.

It was always going to be a testing season. Many players in the squad went in with little or no 1st Grade experience, and our resources were stretched as a result of trying to support a 2nd Grade team as well. This problem worsened through the year as we suffered further unexpected losses of personnel. Disappointingly this season, only 5 teams were entered into the 1st Grade competition. This meant byes and consistently being up against top quality opposition.

All that being said, we had a few good moments through the year and were quite competitive. A good sign of things to come as we consolidate the squad. We welcomed the “Wonthaggis” – Nick Johnson and the Howsons, as well as Conrad to the club, as they moved between 1sts and 2nds throughout the year.

Some highlights included Rob Minnett’s fantastic consistency with the bat all season (412 @ 41), a magnificent partnership of 113 between Kavin Moorthi and Andrew Howson at Nolans 1 to pull off a tough run chase to defeat Cromer and a trio of Minnetts on the field at Griffith Park featuring young Billy pulling off a fantastic catch at fine leg off his Dad Bruce’s bowling, anything else???

Looking forward to putting together a solid squad for next season and seeing the boys continue to improve as we accumulate more 1st Grade experience!

Grade

With movement towards a joint 1sts and 2nds squad this season, the change in format left 2nds short at points throughout their campaign. Despite having a strong core group, the squad struggled to get the same group of 11 on the park every week. However, at full strength, the team was more than competitive with the top sides. Unfortunately, with a lack of consistently 2nds finished 7th out of 8 in a close competition, but was in the running for finals close to the end of the season. Regardless the season had many highlights, including current President Col Huxley’s 500th wicket for the club (Cromer’s no.11 stumped by Liam Bennett @ St Matthews Farm). Additionally, 2nds posted some great wins including a 1 run victory in the first round against St Peters with Wonthaggi recruit Nick Johnson taking wickets with consecutive balls to win the game. The team’s best performance came in round 6 in a one dayer at Plateau Park against the competition’s eventual runners-up Long Reef. Plateau were set a big total of 195 to chase down and reached the total from 27.1 overs and with 6 wickets to spare. In terms of players, 2nds were boosted by the recruitment of former Wonthaggi residents Nick Johnson and Andrew Howson who played vital roles in both 1sts and 2nds. Bathurst recruit Conrad Meulman also added youth and moral to the team with some fantastic on field banter and his love for the game. Ethan Elliott, still eligible for juniors during the season made a huge step up to 2nds from 4th grade and throughout the season established himself as one of the most improved players for the senior club in terms of both his batting and wicket-keeping. Eligible for juniors also, Adrian Caproni and his father Steve were pivotal players in the team. Steve looked dangerous with the ball all season and Adrian played a vital role in the pre-mentioned chase against Long Reef, posting a match winning 45. Toby Horstead was reliable as always with the bat in his token opening role and once again took down yet another batting award for the team. Also, a big thank you to Col Huxley who came out of retirement yet again to help the team, he was promised to only be a part time player at the start of the season and ended up playing 10/12 games! Additionally, honorable mentions to recruit Liam Bennet, Cam Baber and committed as always vice-captain Matt Richards. In summary, it was another fun year of cricket with a different looking 2nds outfit. Given the youth and talent that were displayed in the team, the players were certainly building towards something bigger in seasons to come! Signing off.

3rd

Grade – Blue

A quick rundown on last season 3rd Grade Blue. At the beginning of the season we had no idea what grade we were to be placed. We had whispers

that the 4th Grade team from the year before was coming up a grade - so where were we to go? In the end 3

rd Grade had 2 Collaroy teams. Blue

(us) and Gold (the intruders - lol). The season started really well with a great win which carried to the next game also - well for 4/5ths of the next game anyway. We were well on top chasing 186 and the score was 4-160 odd with plenty of time left. Then comes the collapse. All out for 177 and a loss. This was our season to a ‘T’. We had some dominating wins against good teams then the next we would lose to the bottom of the table. One such game (1 dayer playing Long Reef who were on the bottom of the table at this time) we were all out for 149, not too bad. OK we can defend this! Then one guy comes in at no4 I think and smashed 70 off 25 balls to actually give us a real hiding. His clean hitting of 6 after 6 was nice to watch - sort of.

Our first game against the Gold team was fantastic. Darren would think differently lol. It came down to the last few balls where we chased a massive 300 odd. Gold played well but we somehow stole that one. Then we beat them again convincingly second time round…. At the end of the season we needed to win 1 of our last 2 to make the finals but Mother Nature certainly stuffed that up for us. Rd 13 against Terry Hills. We got 162 first innings and we had them at 2/29 before it was called off. We had both their best bats - the captain and also Taifalos. We were going to win that for sure. Then on the last round a win would still be good enough against Wakehurst - but again Mother Nature took it away from us with not a single ball bowled - both weeks washed out.

So in the end we finished a very very frustrating 5th. One good thing to take from the season - we beat team Gold twice who ended up winning the GF. Well done team Gold - I thought the weather was going to steal your chance away also but luckily you got your game in and deservedly beat Terry Hills - well done! I won’t do player ratings - we ALL played really well most of the time.

3rd

Grade - Gold

(The Threepeaters) After success in 4

th Grade last season and Presidents Cup the year before, the team moved up to 3

rd Grade for the 2016/17

season. While optimistic and hopeful, the grizzled realists Darren McDermott and Craig Allomes set out considering that more wins than losses would be a successful season, with a semi-final spot being the ultimate goal. There were little thoughts of a three peat, but that’s what the end result was following a gripping rain affected Grand Final. The regular season included 7 first innings wins, 4 first innings losses and 3 draws (2 washouts), resulting in a 2nd place finish on the ladder. The team had a couple of changes from last year, with new player Michael Wright joining, and Liam Filmer-Ramsay returning to the Plateau mid-season after Max Dudfield broke his leg. The rest of the team was Darren McDermott (c), Craig Allomes, Lachlan Allomes, Brad Baber, Ben Blackshaw, Ryan Blackshaw, James Bourcier, Sam Filmer-Ramsay, Pat Koch, Lachie Murphie and Kesh Ratnavibushena. 3rd Grade was a well-balanced competition, with no stand out dominant teams or strugglers, and semi-final positions were up for grabs right up to the last round. In the end, 2 extra points gained from a fighting draw against Harbord Bowling and a bonus point in a one day loss against CPCC Blue (where we were well beaten) helped secure 2nd spot and the advantage in the semi-final. Highlights from the season were Pat Koch’s amazing 171 against CPCC Blue, where the team somehow were unable to defend 305, and his 7/7 against Wakehurst; James Bourcier’s 108 against Manly Leagues (he also got 83* against them in the other fixture); Sam Filmer-Ramsay’s match winning 70* against Harbord Bowling; Brad Baber’s 6/37 in the semi-final; and of course the 3 games against Cromer. In the first we saw a massive dummy spit from them as they were asked to play a 2nd innings (and nearly fell in a heap to hand us an outright); in the second we passed them 9 down when they thought they were coasting; and in the semi they were rolled for 64 chasing 227, at one stage being 8/25. As needs to happen to be successful in cricket there were a few players who had standout seasons, but also a full team who contributed. Seven players scored over 200 runs: Bourcier (508); Koch (449); S Filmer-Ramsay (286); Murphie (262); R Blackshaw (248); Baber (207) and Wright (201); while six took 10 or more wickets: Koch (31); Baber (27); Bourcier (20); L Allomes (19); S Filmer-Ramsay (11) and B Blackshaw (10). Darren McDermott again captained astutely, as well as keeping tidily with 21 dismissals (19c, 2 st). The Grand Final. The match was played against Terrey Hills, with a full week’s rain making things ominous. After a 2nd place finish, CPCC needed to win the game, with a draw or wash-out being enough for Terrey Hills. The wise men at MWCA moved the game from Nolans Swamp to Lake Park which gave some chance of a game but a heavy squall at 12.30 on Saturday made things questionable. In the end only around 45 minutes / 8 overs was lost in the days play. McDermott won a good toss and chose to bowl, and a slow outfield, accurate bowling and a defensive-minded Terrey Hills meant only 111 runs were scored from 62 overs. Terrey Hills exercised their right to bat into Day 2, when some sunshine had quickened up the field slightly. They pushed to 9/134 off their 75 overs, leaving CPCC with a minimum of 54 overs to get the score. Standout bowling performances were Bourcier 4/17 (16 overs); Baber 2/36 (24) and Koch 1/25 (19). The fielding was good and tight with McDermott snagging 5 dismissals (4 catches + 1 stumping) and Lachlan Allomes taking a great catch on the boundary. The chase started slowly with Bourcier falling early and Ryan Blackshaw being caught after a quick 30 which lifted the rate. Lachie Murphie then weathered some tight bowling and close chances but kept his wicket intact. Liam Filmer-Ramsay and Pat Koch fell and Terrey Hills were starting to reach for the silver-polish as their premature celebrations began. Their reliance on only 2 bowlers started to unravel though as tiredness set in. Murphie and Brad Baber started playing shots and quickly cut down the required runs as the Terrey Hills players started misfielding and panic set in. When Baber fell for a whirlwind 31 there were only 2 runs left to get, which Murphie calmly polished off, bringing up his unbeaten 50 in the process.

4th

Grade

This was another solid year for the development side with a fifth place finish in an 8 team comp. This season we moved from a one day comp back to the traditional mix of one and two day games in 4th grade. In general our batting was competitive but in some key games our bowling depth was short. It was pleasing to see a few other teams playing a mix of adults and juniors. The rainy weather marred the end of the season with the team playing its last cricket on Feb 17. The side was made up of a number of longer term CPCC players i.e. Kim Blacker, Andrew Davis and myself. This group was joined by CPCC stalwart Andrew Cameron, a group of new adult recruits i.e. Norris Waters, Mark Woolf, Graeme Neasmith, Rob Lerpiniere, Phil Stuart Jones, regular CPCC junior players i.e. Nick Baber, Corey Calvert, family combinations such as Marc and Ben Eady, Ash and Sam Jones, and Jim Debressac and Eli Cox, and guest appearances by Mitch Gilligan, Hayden Calvert, Pat Bowden and Tim Schultz Some highlights of the season included:

A good win over Mona Vale in round 1. The team batted well to haul down a total of 228. Four of the last five batters scored 160 runs between them (Davis 89, Neasmith 36*, Lerpiniere 17 and Eady M 24*)

Andrew Cameron’s inaugural century against St Peters. Following a ‘5 for’ to Eli Cox, Camo gave the pickets on the square boundaries at Balgowlah a good hammering.

A repeat victory over Mona Vale. Tim Schultz (72) showed his batting form of last season with good support from Nick Baber followed by tight bowling and excellent catching, Sam Jones came into the team this match and made an immediate impact.

A crushing win versus semi finalists DY RSL. A very good match for junior teammates Ben Eady and Sam Jones.

Kim Blacker (55*) with the support of Phil Stuart Jones (39*) peppering the square boundaries of Beverly Job to destroy the St Peters attack.

Several batters scoring over 150 for the season. A Cameron (279), A Davis (221), Norris Waters (206) Graeme Neasmith (166) I expect the team will continue to play 4th grade next season. We will be looking to increase the number of juniors in 17-18. My personal thanks to all the adults who supported the development concept and carried out the many team functions.

Masters

There was excitement in the air as the Sydney Masters season was off to an early start this year in September. This was until we found ourselves in the field on a cold and wet Roseville Chase oval in our first game busy chasing a wet cricket ball around all parts of the field with one fielder short for 29 overs before the game was eventually abandoned due to heavy rain (The tea was pretty awful too). That was the start to a season where as well as not getting to play the first game, our final game of the season was abandoned due to wet weather, where in February of this year we had the novelty of having another game abandoned due to “extreme heat”, and in between, we travelled something like 650 Kilometres to get to away games at far flung places such as Campbelltown/Ingleburn, Georges River and Mandalong.

At the end of the day, after finishing a consistent 3rd on the Masters ladder in the past two seasons, this season we ended up finishing 7th on the ladder. This result could easily have been much better when taking into account the closeness of some of our losses and difficulties we faced with missing games with weather when other games were played. After our initial wash out, we next faced the challenge of Mosman at Allan Border Oval when despite some valiant efforts at the crease at various stages by Mossy (31), Woolfy (36) and Dave Bennetts (40 n.o.), we were soundly beaten. At least they were good hosts with free beer after the game.

Round Three found the team facing what they thought was a daunting trip out to Campbelltown before the weary travelers were told upon arrival that the opposition had decided to move the game to Ingleburn without informing anyone. In the end it was all worth the trip as we beat ladder leaders Campbelltown, soundly in a CPCC run fest. After a good opening partnership with Toby Horstead, Van Dam went on to score 42 and was joined by Mossy, and Burton with 40s. Glen Rota also contributed with runs and a handy 3 wickets. A solid win and the tea was apparently very good too. However, the standout performance of the day which earned him man of the match was Mossy spending half an hour on the morning of the game knocking on my front door trying to wake up Pete to get him to the game.

After knocking off the ladder leaders in Round Three, we were brought down to earth over the next 3 games leading up to the Christmas break when we suffered an uncharacteristic trifecta of losses to Macquarie Uni, Georges River and Auburn. Whilst some of these games were close, and we played one of the games with only 10 players, and whilst there was some good performances from some of our players, it is all pretty inconsequential, when at the end of the day we did not win these games. The teas were all good though!

After Christmas we rallied the troops including rounding up club captain Rob Minnett, and Woolfy’s mate Smithy, and managed to scrape up 10 players to head bush up to Mandalong country to play Pennant Hills. A new year brought new fortune as we knocked what we expected to be an insurmountable total of 7/235 with Jason McLean (56 n.o.), Minnett (41 n.o.) and Kym Woolf (52 n.o.), making the most of the long drive, the heat and the flies. After looking like the opposition was going to chase down the total after a searing start, some good bowling started to peg them back, and after a bit of quality heckling which lead to an emotional exchange between the opposition batsman and Pete Henriksen, the opposition found themselves needing 3 runs to win off the last ball of the last over, when Mossy (4/28), proceeded to bowl out the opposition batsman to win the game.

In our next game, on a sticky wicket at home at the revamped LM Grahams Reserve we had another victory against Lindfield after batting first when we defended a modest total of 142. Jason McLean (4/22) and Dean Storey (3/42) each bowled well and helped secure the good win.

In what ended up to be the final game, against Briars at home, after knocking out a respectable 178, with Van Dam belting out a clean 49, helped along by Paps (34), and tail enders Luke Ireland (14) and Storey (21 n.o.), whose 9th wicket partnership of 33 made a big difference, we ended up bowling them out for 67 (incidentally, this was not as good as the performance in 2011/12 when we bowled them out for 59 at Rothwell Park at Concord) It would be remiss of me not to mention the standout bowling performance of the game which came from who else but Kym Woolf who ended up with figures of 2/3 off 1.5 overs. Not to mention Dr Bennett’s small contribution of 4/8 off 9 overs.

The silverware this season was taken out by Mossy who received the batting award with 204 runs at an average of 29.14, and Jason McLean who received the bowling award with 13 wickets at an average of 18.

Thank you to everyone who brought along teas to the home games this season, your efforts were appreciated, I don’t think there’s any chance that a person would ever starve at a CPCC Masters game. Thanks also for all the efforts David Gainsford and others at Manly Grade for helping us out with continuing to supply our ground at LM Grahams Reserve. Thanks also to Ben Pace for all the hard work with all the changes to the grounds calendar over the season. A big thank you for the club and in particular Toby Horstead for organising Masters Playing Shirts and for all of the support.

I look forward to seeing everyone out there for another season next year when I am confident we will be competitive and get ourselves back up the competition ladder. Anyway, at least we get to play on some good turf wickets with our mates having some enjoyment on a Sunday afternoon. If anyone is interested in joining us on a Sunday afternoon for a game of Masters on a turf wicket and if you turn 40 before April 2018, get in contact with me through the club.

T20 OGRES

The 2016/17 T20 competition saw The Ogres have another enjoyable season, where we were competitive (mostly) and even won another game – wonders will never cease! Unfortunately several of the Ogres were unavailable for all or part of the season due to injury or enforced retirement. This opened up the opportunity for several new Ogres to debut and also thanks to the juniors (including Nick, Ben and Sam) who stepped up and helped the likes of Dom and Nirav try and make us older guys look competitive! A special thanks to Dom for returning to captain the Ogres this season. The Ogres are very proud to claim Dom as he played for us for several seasons before making Manly Grade – no doubt the pressure of carrying the Ogres helped him progress through the ranks. Congratulations and well done Dom. Hopefully several previous Ogres will be back for 2017/18 along with a couple of new young and old players to enjoy playing T20 cricket.

T20 Old Spice

Five defeats in five games might not sound like a great season but the results don’t tell the story behind the first season in the T20 Cup for the Old Spice team of ‘mature cricketers’. We might have not played for a while but we hadn’t forgotten how great it is get the whites on and spend a few hours with your mates out in the middle on a hot summer’s day.

Saying that we weren’t expecting the first Monday after our debut to be one of the best that the Northern Beaches physios had seen for many years. Six of the team hobbled off during the game after pulling muscles that hadn’t been challenged like this for a long time; one even had a double hamstring tear. Game two saw only three injuries and even though the opposition scored more in 20 overs than most teams in a 50 over game our spirits weren’t dampened. Things did however get better. We came close to our first win twice, we had one of our team nearly hit our first fifty and we took some great catches. Everyone had a memory or two we will never forget and there were plenty of stories to be told. A win would have been great but enjoyment was more important to us and the families that watched us every week. We all had great fun.

We’ll be back for the 2017/18 season and we lots more wanting to join the squad. We know our first win is only a stroke of luck away. Keep your fingers crossed!

Junior Secretary’s Report The 2016-17 season of Park Cricket officially concluded with our Junior Presentation evening at Collaroy Plateau Youth Club on Sunday 19th March 2017. Ironically, the presentation evening and accompanying BBQ was held under dry skies after the back end of the season, including most Semi and Grand Finals had been literally ‘washed away’. Junior Registration numbers were healthy – particularly in the 8-12 age bracket - allowing us to form 16 Saturday morning teams (covering all age groups from U8’s through to U16-18’s), and for the first time in Club history we fielded an all-girls team who played in the Saturday afternoon Girls Competition. For our Under 6’s we also ran our Friday evening In2Cricket program. The Saturday morning competition commenced in September for U10's and up, with the U8’s and U9's getting underway later in October. The new T20 Blast format was introduced to replace Kanga cricket for the U8’s. The introduction of T20 matches and a Finals series were met with mixed opinions across the older age groups. After some cracking summer weather leading up to Christmas and through most of February, wet weather took hold late Feb and was relentless for the last 7 weeks of the season. The rain played havoc with the competition, spoiling the finals hopes of several teams. Fortunately two of our teams had cemented their positions for finals berths before the big wet set in and emerged victorious at season’s end. In the wrap-up for season 2016-17 we had:

Under 12/2 ‘Flash’ Saturday morning Premiers Under 11/2 ‘Energy’ Saturday morning Premiers Under 11/2 ‘Electrodes’ Saturday morning runners-up

The MWJCA presentation night was held in June 2017. CPCC Premiership teams, coaches and managers, along with individual award winners proudly sported their distinctive blue and gold “Towers” shirts as they took to the stage to receive their trophies. Sydney Thunder player and newly appointed Manly 1st Grade skipper Chris Green was this year’s guest presenter and was also on hand for the official photographs. Congratulations to our 2 x CPCC Premiership teams and our individual award recipients as tabled below.

The next rung up the ladder from Club cricket is MWJCA Representative Cricket. The trials for 2016-17 reps were held in March 2016 with train-on squads selected for each age group. Official training commenced early August with final team selections announced after trial matches during September/October. The rep season proper commenced at the end of October 2016. These players also had the opportunity to represent MWJCA in rep carnivals held in Newcastle, Ballina, Lismore and Tamworth over the Summer School Holiday break. It goes without saying that we are always proud of CPCC Juniors who are selected for representative duties. For the 2016-2017 season MWJCA representative caps were presented to:

Creak Shield – Luke Burgess, Lachlan Kinstler-Smith and Jasper Pressley Under 11 President's Cup – Ethan Buchanan Under 12 President’s Cup – Mitchell Gilligan Under 13 DCA Gee Shield – James Buchanan, Raja Ganeshraj and Harry Ryals Under 13 President's Cup – Ben Eady, Hayden Calvert, Luke Harvey and Jackson Griffiths, Under 14 DCA Harold Moore Shield – Sam Jones Under 14 President’s Cup – Samuel Dunn and Lachlan Trewartha Under 16 President’s Cup – Adrian Caproni

The list of CPCC Junior players to earn selection for the Manly Warringah Waratahs was increased by four this season with Dom Wheeler, Glyn Archer, Hayden Brown and Abhijeet Virdi making their Grade cricket debuts. They joined Jack Ritchie, Ash Virdi, Nick McLachlan, Sam Gainsford, Jake Carden, Adam Gummer, Zach Trewartha, Ryan Bishop-Perrett, James Boyer, Jack Pickering, Isaiah Vumbaca – as former CPCC Juniors currently playing Grade at Manly. Our successful CPCC in-house School Holiday Cricket Camps have become an annual event during the October and January school holidays. Coordinated by accredited coaches Martin Haywood, John Jackson and Jake Carden, the camps were well received by our young players and will be offered again this coming season. Isaiah Vumbaca joined the coaching staff at the January camp to the delight of our aspiring young spin bowlers. Registrations for Season 2017-18 will be underway by the time this report is printed – looking forward to another great season – hopefully with less rain!

U16-18 Neutrons

Yet another summer has come and gone, plenty of runs scored & wickets taken, and more than a few laughs had by all. Unfortunately the weather & scheduling played havoc with the second half of the season, so the boys didn’t get to play as much cricket as they would have liked, but they still managed to put together some fantastic team performances & a few moments of individual brilliance along the way. We lost a few players from our squad from last year, but were joined by some very keen rookies, and a couple of talented players who had come back to cricket, who came in and added a lot of strength to both our batting and bowling stocks. We were however a relatively young team playing up in the U16-18 comp which was obvious to see at times, with some of the opposition teams towering over us & playing a very tough brand of cricket. But despite this, the boys still gave a good account of themselves & stuck it to the big boys on a number of occasions, particularly against the comp’s runaway winners St Augustines Gold, which was very pleasing to see as a coach. The batting award this year went to one of our team’s stalwarts – Liam Maynes-Leslie – who really stepped up & batted with a lot of maturity and consistency this year, becoming the rock at the top of our order. There were quite a few contenders for the bowling award this year, with the wickets shared around by most of the bowlers, however in the end it went to one of our returning members – Nick Lee – who became the go-to bowler when we needed to dry up runs or snag a wicket. Nick bowled a great line and length all year, constantly attacking the stumps & picking up 12 wickets. The final award this year was a Most Improved award which went to one of our newcomers – Matthew Rose – who came good in the second half of the season & started batting with a lot more confidence and spanking the bowlers to all parts which was great to see. I’ll admit that I found it quite difficult to juggle my coaching commitments with my job & my own cricket commitments this year, and probably let the boys down a little bit by not being able to be there all the time this season, which is why I have decided to step down as coach for next season after 8 years at the helm of the Neutrons. It has been a very enjoyable (and challenging) experience & I hope the boys all learned something & improved as cricketers along the way. Finally, I must take the time to thank all of the parents who helped me out both at training and at the matches this season, in particular to Adam Ward, Tim Schultz & Paul Soo. Thanks also to all of the boys for working so hard and giving it their all for the whole season. Hopefully they can keep it up next year! Go Plateau!

U15/1 Thunderbolts

To know that Div 1 was now reality and not a dream, the boys were excited to play some classy/hard core cricket. And they got just that. The ladder doesn’t reflect the attitude and the hard work the boys put in. Several games could have gone our way. But that’s the difference in skill level from div2 to div 1.Our opening bowlers were outstanding each week. Special mention goes to Josh (chips in the pocket) Sauer for his consistent line and length, and seeing these Rep players respecting him each week with the new ball. He was well supported by Max Koccas. Well done boys. Our Batting let us down at times but towards the end of the season, it was rewarding to see players keeping their heads down and walking off the pitch with several not outs. Well done to Corey/Riley/Harry and Tim. Special mention goes to Max (I love my hair) Drew and Calvin (Man Cave) Kinstler-Smith, who have really developed with both the bat and ball. Well done guys. I would like to thank Gary Smith for his support at training, game day and off the field scoring data input. Thank you Pearson’s Florist. Kirsti (I love my dog more than Jeremy) Schnitger as Manager. Thank you for your support, sponsoring the team and providing the best Tent that was the envy of all other sides with (BFG Electrical and Data displayed), and the training balls from the grandparents. Thank you. The Parents….each week that chook pen was in full chatter and I was able to keep up with ALL the goss. Thank you for allowing me the time to develop your young men. It was a pleasure. It was a pleasure to coach and to be rewarded with Corey Calvert making the cut re: Rep cricket…My Job is complete. Thank you and good luck Boys for next year.

U14/1 Charges

The 2016/17 season was a mixed bag for the Charges. We were slow out of the blocks in the early rounds but really fired after the Christmas break. The team worked their way into a position where we needed an outright win in the last round in order to squeeze into fourth position on the ladder and therefore a spot in the semi finals. The Charges demolished Harbord outright in the last round and rightfully earned a place in the semi finals. We had great momentum leading into the semi finals, but alas, wet weather snatched away the opportunity. Both Saturdays of our semi final match were washed out without a ball being bowled (ultimately, the final was also washed out). The core of this team has been together for five seasons now and 2016/17 was another successful one, with plenty of runs scored, wickets taken and catches held. All boys made important contributions at different stages of the season, with some of the milestones listed below:

Hayden Calvert 55 no vs Harbord

James Buchanan 51 no vs Harbord

Luke Harvey 50 no vs Harbord

Raja Ganeshraj 6/4 vs Harbord and 3/13 vs Collaroy Plateau

Sam Debien 3/9 vs Harbord and 3/29 vs Wakehurst

Lochie Keenan 3/16 vs Harbord Congratulations to all players for their effort and enthusiasm throughout the season and thanks also to the many parents who assisted with scoring, umpiring and training. We look forward to a prosperous season in 2017/18.

U14/1 Gigawatts

The Gigawatts (Liam Delaney, Sam Dunn, Ben Eady, Max Faulkner, Finn Herd, Mathew Jackson, Sam Jones, Max Pengelly, Rishi Raju, Lachlan Trewartha, Tyko Williamson) were all keen to get the season started after several weeks of pre-season training. With only 11 players and Ben Eady playing with a broken arm for the first five matches it was a rocky start to season 16/17. Mixed results saw us go into the Christmas break knowing it was going to be a tough comp as always. After the break the boys started to hit their straps with some solid results keeping us in the top four. The Manly Mini Bash was another great fun comp. Making a very wet final the boys finished a gallant second. Weather played a big part towards the end of the regular season with matches being postponed or cancelled due to excessive heat and rain. We finished the season in a solid 3rd place after the finals series was washed out. A huge thank you to team manager Heather Eady for always keeping us well organised. As well as a big thanks to all the parent helpers with scoring, umpiring, ground set up, assistance at training and an endless supply of fizzy drinks after each match. Congratulations to the award winners and the following players on representative selections: Manly representative players - Sam Dunn U14, Ben Eady U13, Sam Jones U14, Lachlan Trewartha U14 It’s been a pleasure being involved with a fantastic group of families and a great bunch of young men.

U13/1 Lightning

After a dominant 2015/2016 season in Division 2, the boys jumped up a division for the 2016/2017 season. This season was all about skills development and growing together as a team. Our regular team of Oliver Fairchild, Matthew Adam, Daniel Jenkins, Ethan Ballie, Jack Mason, Jack Hadikin, Zachary Vera, Isaac Vizzard, Dylan Daniels and Jett Tracy played with great spirit and consistency throughout the season. Often competitive for many games, we were cruelled by injuries and availability of player, with many players stepping up from lower age groups/divisions, even playing against their own teams. We’d like to thank Alec Huxley, Daniel Loney, Lachlan Kinstler-Smith, Ethan Buchanan, Cyan Davis, Beau Valentine, Owen Gordon, Fynn Brown, Kush Patel and Daniel Lee for their service. Our batting this year went to our most consistent, Matthew Adam. 229 Runs @ 20.82 featuring 29 4’s and 3 6’s. Showing promise last year, Matt has really developed over the off-season and this he year turned that potential into output. Matt’s leadership and commitment was also well noted by his peers. Our Bowling award went to Oliver Fairchild, taking 10 wickets at an average of 13.60 and an economy of 3.89. One of the most economical in our team, Ollie was relied upon often to get a breakthrough utilising his swing and pace. Ollie would always be at training and his enthusiasm was not unnoticed. Our fielding award went to Jack Mason. Jack’s anticipation and awareness in the field was elite, culminating in 8 catches, 4 keeping catches, 3 assisted runouts and 2 unassisted runouts. A long throw and always backing up made Jack a great example for those long days in the field, often providing a voice and leadership beyond his years. Finally, we would like to thank the Parents who often coached, umpired, supported, scored and transported throughout the season, and the club, in particular Col and Jocelyn Huxley for providing the facilities and management to get this team up and running.

U13/1 Radiators The boys had a ball at training and on game day. They laughed and made fun of each other and even found time for some cricket. Skills improved as the season took shape. Many thanks to Jake Carden and John Jackson for their coaching expertise.

The commitment each week from the parents in bringing snacks, umpiring, scoring and driving the boys to and from games was greatly appreciated by all.

Batting trophy to Luke Burgess. A brilliant season from our most consistent player.

Bowling trophy to Mitch Gilligan, deserving winner in a very tight contest.

Coach’s trophy to Henry Dewar, our demon opening bowler.

As many of the boys started high school mid-season, training became a challenge. Our closest games were against the other Plateau team, the Lightning. Some excellent good humoured sledging was displayed from both sides.

Although the wins were few the boys had a productive and fun season.

U12/1 Electric

Due to a numbers issue with the previously strong and successful U11/1 Storm team, the decision was made to move Team Electric up from division 2 and take on the remaining Storm players to have a crack at Division 1. Whilst this created a less than desirable squad size of 14 players and a difficult challenge for some of the division 2 players, an enjoyable and successful year resulted. It should not be lost that many members of this team are playing up an age group (or two) and/or were taking the big leap into division 1 cricket. The Div 1 rookies quickly found out how much tougher the competition is in the top grade when we drew Forest and Wakehurst (who eventually tied for 1

st place in the competition) in the first two games. These teams were stacked with rep players but despite quick 1

st innings losses in both these first

two games, the team wasted no time commencing the steep learning curve by digging in and batting out the 2nd

innings to save bigger losses. This determination and resilience will serve them well. Even though the season will be remembered for the amount of rain and tough opposition, we certainly had our ‘days in the sun’. When wins are few, they are certainly enjoyed and the last over victory against St Augustines, & run chase v Harbord Knights were celebrated. Most importantly, all the boys contributed throughout the year and showed improvement. A great example was the efforts of Lockie to motivate his new teammates when in the field. Lockie’s persistent calls of “Keep the talk up it’s not a Library” and “On his toes and off he goes” were usually met early on with bewilderment and silence from the old div 2 players. By the end of the season, most were active to contributing to the on-field chat which keeps the boys engaged. Luke Rosnell – (Bowling Award) Luke started off the season with 3/18 in game 1 against the eventual premiers Forest. He maintained a consistent,

threatening line and length across the season which resulted in a team high 11 wickets at a team best average of 14.11. Luke’s highlight with the

bat was undoubtedly his partnership of 41 with Ethan in our exciting victory over St Augustines in round 7 at Nolans 4.

Cyan Davis – Cyan turned in some strong innings, particularly when he had a chance at the top of the order. His opening partnerships with Jasper

of 38 and 61 set us up for big totals in both games. Cyan’s rapid in-swing bowling was economical but like most, the required short bowling spells

never really allowed him to warm up. As usual, Cyan was always switched on in the field taking 3 catches and a run-out.

Ben Ward – Ben’s left armers collected 3 wickets for the season – and it could have been more as he created a number of half chances. When he

warms them up, Ben’s full length and trajectory makes him difficult to play. Ben’s batting epitimised the defiant stand our players took against

stronger & often older opposition. Sent out into the heat of battle with wickets falling, Ben never flinched and held up an end under great pressure.

Alec Huxley – Whilst runs were hard to come by, Alec again showed his game-awareness by contributing to several valuable partnerships through

intelligent running and batting, the highlight being our season best partnership of 67 with Ethan in round 15 at Dee Why. Alec’s bowling strength is

in his accuracy, length and ability to swing the ball away often dismissing or pinning down a threatening batsman.

Fynn Brown – Despite not having a lot to show for his efforts in terms of runs or wickets, Fynn demonstrated good development with both his

bowling and batting. Based on this Fynn was often sent in early, facing strong opposition bowling where he displayed good technique and

‘survivability’. This culminated in him retiring ‘Not Out’ in one of our later T20 matches. Fynn’s bowling is now at a strong accurate pace which

should see him start to get rewards with the ball and he’s always contributing in the field taking 3 catches for the season.

Oli Knight – Oli couldn’t buy a run for most of the season finding all sorts of ways to get out. Still, he demonstrated enough (particularly in the Mini

Bash) to prove that he has the technique and shots of a class batsman once he gets going. Oli spent a good deal of time behind the stumps and is

developing into a solid keeper-batsman whilst he still has a great outswinger when he gets hold of the ball.

Aden Crawford – Aden’s highlight came early in round 1 at Melwood Oval when he batted with Ethan for many overs against a rep standard

bowling attack in a partnership of 61, saving the team from oblivion. As with many players this season, the ‘hit or get out’ nature of T20s did not help

Aden spend the time required at the crease to develop his batting in div 1 and likewise with the ball as aggressive batsmen gave little room to warm

up however Aden kept contributing with a couple of good catches and run outs.

Lockie Kinstler-Smith – (Batting Award) Joining us from Team Storm, Lockie was one of the team’s ‘core’ players due to his div1 and rep

experience. He started his season in style with a beautiful maiden fifty and went on to score another two more in his season total of 253 @ 31.63.

Lockie’s skill in the field and capability with the ball and gloves showed what an excellent cricketer he already is and a valuable team member.

Kush Patel – Another from the Storm team, Kush was a regular with the new bowl. He found a fabulous length from ball one of the season and

kept it pretty much till the end, often bowling well without much luck. Kush’s best for the year were the great figures of 2/4 off 6 overs to help set up

our win against Harbord Knights in round 3 at Passmore. Kush can smack the odd four which is good as he isn’t a great fan of the quick single.

Ethan Buchanon – (All-Rounder Award) Another one of our rep players picked up from the Storm team, Ethan was involved in everything. His

bowling was feared and respected by the opposition and the proliferation of T20s limited opportunity to take more wickets. Ethan’s batting went to a

new level showing a balance of great power hitting and maturity in occupying the crease when needed, proved by his involvement in 4 of our 7

partnerships greater than 25 runs. He hit two fabulous fifties on his way to 243 runs. Added to that, Ethan’s fielding is amazing with one diving catch

at deep backward-square beyond belief.

Jack Day – Batting at the top of the order was a tough ask this season but Jack always put up his hand to take on the generally quick, swinging

opening bowling. Jack’s own bowling showed improvement this year with him turning in several very tight spells and is always keen to take the

gloves when he could get them off Lockie and Oli. Jack shows a cool head in the field where he played a part in 5 run outs.

Will Sewell – Will easily took out ‘Rookie of the Year’ honours. Every over and every innings showed dramatic improvement and it wasn’t long

before he had his first runs (a turn behind square leg at David Thomas against Peninsula) and wicket against Harbord Spinners (caught by Aden at

mid-on). Despite the milestones, Will’s season highlight was undoubtedly his catch at deep deep fine leg when he swallowed a crisply flicked shot

we all thought was going for six off paceman Ethan in a pressure cooker victory over St Augustines.

Jasper Pressley – The 3rd of our rep players returning to Team Electric after a stint with Div 1 Storm, Jasper struggled to consistently harness his

enormous pace with the ball. When he did, he was usually too quick for the batsman (& our keepers!). With the bat, Jasper showed on a number of

occasions what a talented player he is, the highlight being the last game of the season where he put on 61 runs with Cyan at Dee Why.

Alan Perry – Another good season of development for Al. He was difficult to face when he was on the spot with the ball however it was Al’s batting

that probably provided him with season highlights. All of a sudden Al worked out how to swat them back past the bowler and he put on 51 with

Ethan at Plateau Park against Harbord Crushers.

Again the boys received compliments from opposition coaches regarding their fielding, behaviour and application which says a lot about their development with the game and character given the often tough game situations we found ourselves in. I would like to thank all the parents for their support and cooperation particularly with the rostering of players off regularly due to the large squad. Scoring was possibly the toughest task anyone had this year with the game format and hence rules changing week to week together with the frantic pace of T20s. Thanks to Andrew, John, Chris and anyone else brave enough to take the book this season and to Paul and Andrew for assisting with umpiring. Most of the boys participated in the midweek Mini Bash T20 Comp where we had more success. Thanks to Matt Richards for successfully coordinating the boys through to the Mini Bash finals and Jocelyn for so efficiently managing Team Electric.

U12/2 Flash Having finished last year with four wins in a row, the boys returned in 2016/17 with plenty of enthusiasm and determined to continue their fine run of form. Beating last year’s premiers and arch rival Cromer in the very first game was a great start and set a high level of expectation for the season. Despite a few losses here and there in the first half of the season, while the team got used to their first season of "if you're out, you're out!" traditional cricket, the boys learnt quickly from their mistakes and by the second half of the season there was no stopping them. Cromer also continued their fine run and despite getting some extra points from outright wins Flash were unable to dislodge them from number one spot trailing by just one point at the top of the ladder by the time the finals came round to finish in second place. The two day semi-final against Wakehurst was played mostly in the rain, and although it ended up being washed out on the second day, enough cricket was played on the first day to give our boys plenty of confidence for the final the following week. And what a terrific final it was against Cromer - our arch rivals all season. The boys made a fantastic start as we bowled them out very cheaply and then managed to get past their total on the same day, securing a first innings victory. With a washout the following week, the first innings victory secured us the premiership. Thoroughly deserved by our boys who played all season with great skill, intelligence, camaraderie and sportsmanship.

A great bunch of boys ably led by co-coaches Dan Morley and Andy Barker and supported by our amazing manager Catherine Tissier. Standouts in the team were George Saunders for his bowling (including a five wicket haul) and Dylan Newland-Dailly for his batting including a top score in the 70's. Best fielder award was won by Nicky Butcher. Other notable mentions are Sean Rose for his all-round ability and always taking a wicket when we most needed it, fielding and bowling from Jago Barker, Fenton Morley for his safe hands behind the wickets and opening the batting, Jacob Quarrie for his outstanding spin bowling, Baden Malcolm with great swing bowling, Ryan Kotze with huge improvements in bowling, and also big improvements for Myles White and Tom Parsons.

U11/2 Energy

The CPCC U11/2 Energy team had a fantastic 2016/17 season losing only one game on their march to a well deserved premiership. The Energy’s top score for the season was a massive 5/196 off 36 overs and in an 18 over-a-side game they scored 112 without losing a single wicket. The Energy’s best bowling for the season was an impressive 13/100 off 36 overs. Importantly, the Energy are a great group of boys who played as a team and in the spirit of cricket. In average cricket everyone has to perform to win and they all ‘stood up’ in tight games to take wickets, score runs, take a critical catch or to be not out and collect bonus runs. I was constantly impressed by how well the team fought back after a tough first session or week; sometimes costing me a box of iceblocks or a round of drinks! It is amazing how well boys of all skill levels respond if you give them all an equal opportunity, and show faith and confidence in them. A special thanks to our manager Jonathan for keeping us organised all season and for his entertaining emails, to our assistant coach Noah Gammage who brought his experience and skills from playing as a CPCC and Manly representative junior for many years to the team, to everyone who helped out with scoring and umpiring, and to a great group of supportive parents who made the season a very enjoyable one. Congratulations as well to the CPCC Electrodes who pushed us all the way to the last game of the season which was unfortunately washed out when they had a chance to be joint premiers. Well done to our award winners and the rest of the team:

U11/2 Electrodes

What a stellar season!

With the exception of 2 players the squad entered its 2nd season together under the watchful eye of Mark Pearson. This team is full of kids that constantly display a passion and energy for the game. They are willing to learn and enjoy all forms of the game. The improvement and performances on the field from early in the season meant it quickly became evident that this team could be contenders come finals time.

Mark focused the boys on fundamentals such as running between wickets and backing up fielders. The bowling accuracy improved substantially, leading to the team in some games taking over 15 wickets.

The Electrodes only lost 1 of its last 6 games and unfortunately due to rain was unable to complete their finals game against the other Collaroy team. This meant they tied for 2nd position. Overall a fantastic achievement from a great bunch of boys.

U10/1 Force

The Force was definitely with this wonderful group of friends who re-united this year to enjoy every moment of the cricket season. The team consisted of Angus Ashwin, Cameron Dancer, Harley Cruickshank, Tom Trevena, Patrick Wollaston, Lachlan Potter, Lucas Farrant, Oliver Balenzuela, Patrick Barham, Remi Tyacke, and Hunter Carroll.

The boy’s strength and knowledge improved greatly from the original U9 formation of the Force, with all players making valuable contributions to the team. Highlights for the year included Lucas’ 4 wickets in a devastating 3 over spell against Peninsula Barracudas and then getting a fifth wicket via a spectacular run-out, Harley demonizing opposition batsman with his incredible pace, Angus’ pull shot for 4 against Peninsula Kingfisher sending backward square ducking for cover and some hilarious running between the wickets by the entire team. Thanks to all the parents for turning up every week, helping me with training and playing cricket with their children – this is vital for the success of the whole team!

Thanks to our super manager – Danielle Farrant for all her tireless efforts in getting us to turn up on time every week!

Looking forward to seeing how far they all can go next season.

U10/1 Protons

Bring on the hard ball and Division 1 - which is a big step up for the Protons. This means no more Super Softa balls, but like last season games are decided on the ‘average’ of runs and wickets with no table or individual player stats. As coach my goals for each season is that everyone has lots of fun, learns about cricket, and contributes to the team. I also work with the kids to improve individual batting, bowling and fielding skills, while learning the rules of the game. This season was our last chance to play cricket without a points table at Div. 1 level. Overall we had our share of wins and some 'well played’ losses and we all enjoyed our cricket. A fun season and I look forward to the next. Most of our team carried on from last season. We lost Aston Ellis, Denise Wells, Theo Avory & George Wright, but we gained Chloe Brown, Edie Hunter, Holly Merritt, Timothy Knight & Nelson Davis. Darcy Horstead also fills in for us when we need him - thanks Darcy. Ben Fergusson: Ben really improved in all areas this year. His good fielding & throw created one of the best run outs of the season. Well done Ben Callum Flutey: (Fielding award) Callum has lots of natural sporting ability and throws himself around the field like they do on the TV. Callum took some tough catches this season, plus he bats and bowls well too. Nice work. Chloe Brown: Chloe’s worked hard on her cricket this year and her bowling came good at the end of the season. You really look like a cricketer so keep it up Chloe. Edie Hunter: Edie’s a real competitor and handy cricketer. Edie hit one of the biggest shots this year for 4 out at cow corner. Edie’s defence might need a little more work next year but who’s doesn’t. Go Edie. Emily Horstead: (Bowling award) Emily is a serious cricketer and team player. This year Emily was my ‘go to’ bowler for the final overs and won the bowling award for being the most consistent. Well done Em. Holly Merritt: Holly joined our team without any experience and has had to practice her bowling more than most. To Holly’s credit she’s stuck with it and was much more consistent by the end of the season. Keep it up Holly. Nicholas Wells: Nicholas really enjoys his cricket, whether batting, bowling or fielding and brings a lot to the team with his skills and attitude. Good work Nick. Nelson Davis: New to our team but a very handy cricketer. Nelson batted out one amazing innings to see us win on the last ball. Close to the trophies. Well done Nelson. Nelson Murphy: Nelson is a very consistent cricketer and rarely has a bad day. Nelson plays a great leg glance and picked up a lot of 4’s plus his bowling is always reliable. Nice work Nelson. Neo Pressley: (Batting award) Neo’s game just keeps getting better because he loves his cricket and being the coaches son means lots of trips to the nets. Neo hopes to make Reps this season. Well done Neo. Timothy Knight: Tim's a fun cricketer and talented too. This season Tim took some of our best wickets with the ball, so he’s a bit of a match winner. Hope to see you next season Timmy. Again, thanks Paula for your great support as team manager and as assistant coach. Thanks to all the parents who supported the team, helped with scoring and supplied the coach with take away coffee, which is always appreciated.

Under 9 Electrons

Despite the heat and the rain the Electrons did very well to win 10 and only lose 2 tight matches. But more importantly it was the positive and supportive attitude and growth in cricketing terms that made 2016/17 a great season for the CPCC U9 Electrons. All the boys progressed with their cricketing knowledge and ability. Aspects such as encouraging each other in the field, celebrating a wicket, backing up in the field and backing up when batting all point to a group that is enjoying their cricket. Archie received the bowling award for taking the most wickets, bowling very straight since Christmas and working hard on improving. The batting award was based on runs scored and being dismissed least, and straight bat stroke play around the ground. With a high numbers of runs, only being dismissed twice and his elegant cover drives Darcy picked up the batting award. The All-rounder award was based on the combination of batting (runs and least dismissed), bowling (wickets) and catching/run out contribution. This award went to Brody. Other individual highlights to note included Sam never being dismissed and Lachlan scoring lots of runs and taking lots of wickets. James and Lewis's chat in the field always kept the energy up. Rory and Liam are growing in cricketing confidence and ability. Connor's significant all round contribution in his first season. Jamie's leadership in the field, always wanting to improve and one amazing pre-Christmas amazing batting partnership with Rex. I am already looking forward to next season, as are the boys who had a lively pre-season net session before the presentation evening. I am sure most of the team are looking forward to U10/1's and the hard ball! Thanks to the mums and dads who helped out at training and with scoring and umpiring. Your participation makes the cricketing experience all the more enjoyable for our aspiring Warner, Smiths and Starcs. From a club perspective, thank you to Vicki, Colin, Jocelyn and my wife Paula for all your administrative efforts. I also want to say how proud I was of a many of the Electrons who sat attentively through the whole presentation evening, I really enjoyed sitting with the boys. Looking forward to 2017/18.

Under 9 - Sparks

The 2016/17 Sparks players were: Russell Adler, Samuel Barry, Charlie Blyton, Louis Brown, Tyson Butler, Charlie Byford, Jack Kalms, Liam Kelly, Conor Mulcahy, Kye Paxton, Patrick White, Hugh McWilliam.

The Sparks entered 2016/17 season with their first step to playing on a hard pitch with pads, gloves, and helmets. We had boys from all parts of the Northern Beaches, including Collaroy, Elanora, and Belrose, aged 6-9 years.

At the beginning of the season we worked on developing some basic cricket skills with batting, bowling and fielding. The boys found some aspects of the game difficult, however, they made some great improvements towards the end the season with being able to play shots on both sides of the wicket. In addition, there were significant improvements in their bowling, with a decrease in the number of wides and no-balls bowled.

Thanks to Ciaran Sharp for this work as manager throughout the season. In particular, with all the wet weather cancellations. I would like to also thank Wheeler Heights Public School for the use of the nets on a Friday afternoon. Furthermore, a special thanks to all the parents for helping with scoring.

T20 Blast - Volts

The Volts entered the new format T20 Blast with no-one sure quite what the competition would involve. Although the promise of music and lights didn't quite materialise, the regular venue of Beacon Hill Oval was filled with anticipation as the Volts stepped onto the "SCG" with enthusiasm and belief. Being a tight-knit group they probably had a little too much enthusiasm at times and often had to be kept in check by coach Andrew Graham when over-celebrating wickets or match wins (not that we were keeping score too closely, were we?).

All the team improved hugely as the season went on, and having started out with the usual mix of chucking, wide armed windmill bowling, holding the bat the wrong way round, and some comical run-outs in the first couple of games, the team quickly hit their stride. Winning almost all their games with a combination of big hitting sixes, classic cover drives, tight straight bowling, and some fantastic catching and ground fielding (even when playing for the opposition) the Volts can safely be marked out as a team to watch in the years to come.

Some of the boys even had the chance to step out on the real SCG at lunch on day 1 of the Australia v Pakistan test match (making up the numbers for Pittwater), wowing the crowd with their enthusiasm and skills, making for some memorable moments that will live with them for a long time.

Special thanks to coach Andrew Graham for bringing the boys along so much, and somehow managing to control an infectious and sometimes boisterous bunch of boys.

Storm - T20 Blast & Sydney Sixers Girls League

I had the honour of coaching the first ever girls cricket team for the mighty Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club. Though we were entered in an U/13s competition, with the average age of our girls being 9, we were always in the contest and came a long way throughout the season. I was very impressed with how committed the girls were in learning new and challenging skills such as bowling with a straight arm, and facing up to fast, experienced bowlers a few years their senior, with a hard ball! Perhaps the greatest characteristic of our team was their undying enthusiasm and joy of playing cricket together. It didn’t matter if we were losing, or melting in the summer heat; the girls would always find a way to laugh and bring a smile to each other, which to me is the definition of a successful team. There is no doubt that with time and practice, these young girls will develop into excellent cricketers, but more importantly, they are already showing promising signs of maturing into fine young women and future leaders. Overall, they were a pleasure to coach, and I look forward to seeing them develop, as they grow bigger, stronger and wiser.

MILO in2CRICKET

MILO in2CRICKET is Australia’s national junior development program for boys and girls not yet involved in under age

cricket competition. The program incorporates high participation with skill development. The program runs over 8-12 weeks, with sessions running for 60mins. Whilst the aim of the program is for children to develop their skills, there is always an emphasis on fun and enjoying cricket. All the equipment used is designed for young children and is safe and easy to use. Each child receives a Give-Away pack that includes a bat, ball, bag, hat, t-shirt, cd-rom and a few other promotional items. MILO in2CRICKET is the first step in a child's long term involvement in the game of cricket. CPCC’s MILO in2CRICKET centre is linked to our junior cricket club and will lead into age competitions.

CPCC has a long association with local baseball. This team from the 60’s consisted mostly of CPCC cricketers. In the 1970s, club members would go on to form the long running and highly successful Warringah Warriors baseball team. In the 1990s to mid-2000s the CPCC ‘Towers’ were formed winning the 2006 3rd Grade Winter Baseball Premiership.
