PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well that's our 93rd season over and what a season. The First Grade competition was the most open for a number of years

with all six clubs heading into the final rounds with a chance to win the Clifton D Leake Shield. Harbord Diggers were

looking strong, Collaroy Plateau and Mona Vale sitting in the top three while Long Reef and Wakehurst Redbacks, who

started slowly, were flying after Xmas. In the end the Harbord Bowling Club side again showed how tough they are in finals

cricket, winning from 4th place after the season proper.

It was also great to see St. Peters back in the winners’ circle along with St Augustines who won their first MWCA trophy in

over 30 years. Harbord Bowling’s Dad’s Army picked up their fourth consecutive premiership despite being promoted to

Second Grade, while Dee Why RSL, Harbord Diggers and a young Collaroy side picked up the other Saturday Grades.

After several years of seeing less juniors move into seniors, this season we had a better intake in our 5th and 6th grade

competitions. This season we introduced more one dayers into Fifth and Sixth Grade, as Cricket Australia has urged. We

then surveyed both competitions and found overwhelming support for the structure as well as suggestions on how to improve

it further. With the MWDCA Pathway Program growing we also saw a flow of players back to the park and the coming

season should be better again. Meanwhile, Mick Pawley reintroduced his junior development side to the park with a group

of dads and 12 and 13 year olds making the Grand Final in Sixth Grade playing for the Harbord Diggers.

The T20 competition was again a success, the Mick Pawley Cup and T20 Plate Finals played in front of a great crowd and

graciously covered live on Radio Northern Beaches. This year we saw a Combined Manly Grade and Warringah Shires side

make the Final in the Cup only to be outclassed by Collaroy, who collected the trophy for the second year running. In the

Plate we saw a side made up of dads from St Augustines and a little help from a Former Sheffield Sheild and KFC Big Bash

player in Adam Crosthwaite, the class of Crosthwaite eventually proving too much for Manly Leagues.

The game of cricket is still going through a transition period. Test cricket is as influential as its ever been, this year we see

back to back Ashes series, the first test just completed saw a nail biting finish and a win to England. Australia is rebuilding

after years of dominance with a new captain, new coach and a number of newly capped players but they have shown plenty

of fight. The Champions Trophy 50 over competition was recently held with India victors over England, T20 continues to

grow with competitions like the IPL, KFC Big Bash and the Caribbean Premier League. My point is that nations embracing

the shorter version of the game seem to be developing greater player numbers.

Our own T20 competition played on Sundays has also expanded, including sides from outside the Saturday competition,

taking on a fresh franchise style appearance. The MWCA needs to cater to all three formats of the game, whether T/20, one

dayers or two dayers, and will continue to do its best to find the right balance. A few more points:

Sponsorship - I would like to pass on our thanks to our sponsors: Kookaburra, The Steyne Hotel and Belrose Bowling Club

who continue to offer support to the MWCA either financially or through other forms of assistance.

Umpires: This season we saw a number of new umpires join the ranks, thanks to the generous support given by Life

Member Errol Cranney who organizes umpires for all of our competitions and umpired in the T20 Cup Final.

Grounds: Due to increase insurance costs we were only able to make a contribution to the replacement of one pitch at

Balgowlah Oval. I would like to thank and congratulate Danny LeMoy and his Committee at the MWJCA, in particular

Tony Pecar, who oversaw the replacement of Balgowlah Oval, and two new pitches at Tania Park where the full cost was

covered by the Juniors. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Grants/Player Survey – Thank you to Committee Member Matt Brennan who took the lead in applying for Government

grants this season. Thanks to Matt’s efforts we were successful in receiving a $4990 grant from the NSW Department of

Sport and Recreation to be put to promoting cricket participation in the Manly Warringah area.

Finally, as a Committee we have been together, generally speaking, for three years. We’ve had a few changes in that time

but on the whole have remained as a group. This season we see the retirement of some very valued Committee Members

and office bearers - Bill Clark (Treasurer), Liz Pymble(Assistant Secretary), Chris Dolman (Committee) and Stephen

Shepherd (Secretary), all of whom have contributed greatly to this Association. I would however like to pass on my

personal thanks to Shep - the amount of work that was required when we first came to office was enormous, especially

ensuring that the Association was re-incorporated, fell solely on Shep and his effort has continued right throughout his three

years in the job. At the time of writing we have not managed to fill the role of Secretary and Shep who has remained on the

Committee has agreed to fill the role temporarily until we can find a replacement. On a bright note we have gained the

services of Darren Hooker (Treasurer), David Ralphs, Matt Richards and Paul Killalea on the Committee. We have also

seen Matt Meers retire from the position of Webmaster but he will continue on the Committee upon his return from Europe

and we are lucky to have Dom Wheeler ready to step up to replace Meersy as our new Webmaster.

I close by thanking all Committee Members for their outstanding work. They make sure we have a competition and

although we don’t always agree we have a very good group that work hard to improve the game of Cricket in Manly

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Dear MWCA,

I have served just three years as MWCA Secretary, a fraction of the service given by our longest serving Secretaries R.A

Baker (1936-8, 1944-54), Alex Anderson (1954-69), Frank Gray (1973-1989) and Peter Moses (1989-2004). I continue to

be amazed by their longevity.

The MWCA has been blessed with many long serving office bearers, not just Secretaries. Lyle Pearce was President for 14

years from 1976 to 1989, having already spent 14 seasons as Treasurer (1962-9, 1971-6) and 1970/1 as Assistant Secretary.

Clifton Leake served as President for 13 seasons from 1931 to 1943. Alan Rainey served 12 summers from 1989 to 2000

while Des Sainsbury (1955 to 1965) and Brian Ferguson (2000-2011) each spent 11 seasons at the helm. Leonard Ray was

Treasurer from 1932 to 1944, the record holder until Allyn Coggan served in the position for a staggering 27 seasons.

Grounds Officer also had stable patronage, Alley Freeman (1944-1956), A.Anderson (1956-76) and Jill Pearce (1978-2007).

The endurance of our office bearers in the past is a statistic I can’t really explain. Did they have more time? Were they

more community focussed? Will we find as many long serving volunteers in this century as we did in the last?

On the field, cricket participation is also a sign of the times. I grew up in the 1970s and even then people seemed to have

more spare time, a space that black & white TV couldn’t fill. Electronic devices were supposed to increase our spare time,

but instead they make it easier to do avoid boredom yet do nothing. Extended shopping hours were supposed to give us

more flexibility but instead they encroach on the weekends.

Team numbers are down in the longer forms. Most blame the time it takes. Didn’t seem to be an issue in the 1980s, but it is

now. However there is growth in T/20, while the shift this season to more one dayers in the lower grades drew calls to

expand the program. And some players are being re-introduced to cricket.

The MWCA must make cricket participation as user friendly as possible. In light of our long and proud history I’m

confident the MWCA can modernise in a way that respects the traditions of the game, but still adjusts to a new digital culture

where time is of the essence.

Registrations and Draw

Saturday Afternoon Competitions

Despite my spiel above, I am unable to report any improvement in the Saturday afternoon team numbers on my watch. We

dropped from 40 to 36 teams this season, though that was still only our worst since 1955/6. The number of clubs fell from

14 to 13 when Seaforth announced they couldn’t field a side. St Peters went back to one team, Belrose also down to one for

the first time I can recall. Manly Leagues dropped to two teams for only the second time since 1960, Collaroy also inhaled

from 7 to 6, Cromer down from 4 to 3. Only the resurgent DYRSL (from 2 to 3) and Harbord Diggers (3 to 4) increased

their team numbers, the latter boosted by the return of Mike Pawley’s Academy Team under their banner.

The message regarding shorter formats is getting through and after consultation the Committee went with 6 grades of 6 –

three full round robins before the semis - the top 4 Grades with 10 two dayers and 5 one dayers, but grades 5 and 6 the

opposite – 10 one dayers and five two dayers. Teams were also given the option of which format they wished to register in

(though 5th grade was slightly amended due to a communication mix up between myself and the Draw Sub Committee where

a team nominating for 4th grade got put in 5th grade).

The results suggest the Draw Sub Committee did pretty well. All grades were evenly contested, the semis alive in all grades

well into the new year, all but two teams a semi chance entering Rnd 14. It seems likely however there will be more one day

grades in 2013/14, and consideration is being given to incorporating T/20s into the main draw.

T/20

The Mike Pawley T/20 Cup was again played on Sunday afternoon and had a record 13 teams, including newcomers Manly

Grade (fittingly drawn from former Mike Pawley Academy teams), St Augustines College, Manly Steyne (who were aligned

with HBCCC) and the independent team The Barbarians. It was great to be welcoming new clubs for a change rather than

bidding them farewell.

The Tournament was again played from late October to February with three pools of 4 or 5 then plays off for the Cup and

the Plate. Some big names, both past and present, took part in the Mike Pawley Cup this season, most notably Adam

Crosthwaite, a veteran of 31 Sheffield Shield games, 62 Domestic one dayers and 26 Domestic T/20s, his 100no in the Plate

Final delivering the opposing captain (yes, me) a cricketing lesson. But in the Cup Final the park cricketers prevailed,

Collaroy Plateau defending 123 against impatient Manly Grade batting.

The Finals and Semi Finals were broadcast on Radio Northern Beaches which greatly added to the atmosphere and for that

we are grateful to Anthony Caruso and his bench team who did a great job calling the games, Mat Meers impressing in co-

commentary.

7

There was some concern during the season that Grade players should not be playing against beginners. However most

people found it a positive experience, and this year’s T/20 went some way in building links between park and District Club

cricketers. The MWCA does not see a safety issue so long as proper precautions are taken with helmets and short pitched

bowling. It may be however that a T/20 draw can be devised next year that minimises uneven match ups during the pool

games.

Pathway Program

The Pathway Program, run by the District clubs in co-ordination with the MWCA and MWJCA, was in its second season

last summer. It is still a work in progress. Four MWCA club representatives attended Pathway Training during the pre-

season only to find the players had generally decided to stay with their Junior Clubs. Those who did register with MWCA

Clubs were at the older end of the 14 to 19 years age group and tended to spend most of their time in the Shires teams.

Nevertheless the program does have great potential to build co-ordination between the four local cricket bodies and I do

believe it will ultimately increase the level of participation and strength of cricket in the area.

Meetings

The MWCA and its Delegates met slightly less frequently in 2012/13 with more administrative issues being dealt with

electronically. There was an AGM in August, a captains Night in September, as well as an Adjourned AGM and delegates

meetings in November, February and March. The Committee also met on these nights as well as an end of season meeting

in April, but communicated closely through countless emails.

External meetings were attended by President David Sheedy (pitch contractors, Council, MWJCA, NSWDCA, Pathway

Program). Also attending meetings were Mat Meers (Council, MWJCA, Sporting Union), Stephen Shepherd (Pathway

Program, Sporting Union) and Carl Pymble (pitch contractors, Steyne Hotel, Council), David Lang (NSWDCA), Brenden

Ball (NSWDCA), and Brett Holliday (Council). Judiciary

I’m happy to report there were no Judiciary Hearings or suspensions in 2012/13 and thank all clubs and players for that.

There were occasional informal reports of some controversies but we can generally be happy with the behaviour of our

players. Long Reef’s Chris Dolman again co-ordinated a pink stumps day, this year in combination with HDCC.

There was a match protest hearing conducted when an A1s game ended in a tie after the scorers and sent out the wrong

score. Despite the mistakes made by the scorers the Protest Panel ruled that the scorebook prevailed. It was also noted that

the umpire Brian Watson acted correctly in not signing the books and referring them to the MWCA Committee, which in

turn referred them to NSW Chief Scorer Merilyn Fowler.

Rule Changes

There were 13 amendments to the By Laws and Playing Conditions this year. The most substantive motions passed were:

That in Judiciary matters the Committee does not recommend penalties until the relevant Club Secretary has had

48 hours to tender an outline of defence.

That where a prima facie finding of serious misconduct is made there be no provision for recommended penalties

or guilty pleas.

That the increase in umpire payment from $140 to $150 per day be removed as part of annual review.

That a T/20 knockout match, in the event of a tie in a Super Over, be decided by another Super Over.

That there be drinks breaks in both sessions of play (at 2pm and 4.30pm) unless both captains agree otherwise.

That one dayers in A1s be reduced from 40 to 35 over per side.

Pitch Installation Program

When NSW Cricket announced on 31 July 2012 that they could no longer cover insurance costs and teams would have to

pay an additional $120 per year, the Committee decided to take that out of the $250 Pitch Fund Levy so overall fees

wouldn’t rise (other Associations were not so lucky). As a result there was less money to invest in Pitch Replacement, but

the funds that were raised were put to good use with the MWCA contributing to a new track at the picturesque Balgowlah

Oval. The MWJCA also drove the funding for new pitches at Tanya Park. This means that there have been 19 new pitches

constructed since the pitch levy was introduced in 2009/10.

Local Government

Warringah Council’s doubling of sports user fees has continued to reap dividends with improvements in ground

maintenance. There was an issue in Round 1 when some grounds at Nolans and Passmore remained covered but we were

able to move the games at late notice (though my three year old got a bit stressed out trying to keep up with me I ran from

field to field with Meersy on the phone). At one stage we also had an abandoned car on Lionel Watts. These things happen.

Field bookings in Warringah and Pittwater have been more complex since those councils assumed responsibility from the

Page 8: 2013-14mwca.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/2952/files/MWCA 2013-14 Annual Re… · 2013-14 NINETY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT. MANLY WARRINGAH CRICKET ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT ... though that

8

Sporting Union. Unfortunately we had our first double booking tragedy in the Fifth Grade semi final at Warriewood Oval

when it emerged soccer had booked the fields on the Sunday. Manly Breakers were severely disadvantaged by the delay to

the day two proceedings and I take this opportunity to again apologise to both Breakers and Long Reef for the MWCA’s role

in the communication mix up. David Sheedy has suggested in response that the old position of Grounds Manager be

reinstated.

NSW Government Grant

Thanks to the efforts of Matt Brennan the MWCA obtained a grant for $4990 from the NSW Sport and Recreation

Participation Program. The purpose of the grant is to raise awareness of the sport on the northern beaches and break down

barriers to participation, especially for beginners. The MWCA’s submission envisages that the money will be spent on

activities such as advertising, providing coaching to new or inexperienced players and the purchase of a ball machine that

can be shared by clubs.

Matt Brennan also organised the first player survey in MWCA history. There were 47 respondents. Among the main

findings were 92% in favour of the expansion of one day or limited over formats, time commitment cited as the main barrier

to recruitment, respondents in favour a form of grading rules that give more players a turn. Surprisingly however, most

respondents were in favour of an early September start to the season and a late March finish.

NSW District Cricket - Martin Shield & Telegraph Shield Representative Teams

The MWCA again entered sides in the Martin Shield and U/23s Telegraph Shield, both sides improving on their 2011/12

performances.

The Martin Shield side won two of their three preliminary games to finish second in their pool before coasting through their

quarter final with a convincing win over Churches. But weather has not been kind to Manly over the years, the semi final

washed out, Manly eliminated on the basis of inferior ranking entering the finals.

Meanwhile the Telegraph Shield side, in their second season since a nearly 20 year hiatus, broke through for their first win in

over two decades, defeating Blacktown by 9 wickets at Frank Gray Oval. Manly finished 4th after the qualifying rounds but

only the top two teams went to finals. The Manly U23s are slowly accumulating experience and building towards a finals

berth.

Thank you again to captains Paul Killalea and Dom Wheelers for their hard work and commitment and also to the assistance

from Sub Committee members David Lang, Mat Meers and Brendon Ball.

Sponsorship

The MWCA continued its sponsorship arrangement with Manly Steyne who hosted out rep sides and gave us good deals on

our Presentation Night function. It was also great to see the Steyne enter a side in the Mike Paweley Cup. Thanks also to

our friends at Kookaburra who provided a rebate on balls sold with the MWCA stamp and a kit for the Cricketer of the Year.

Umpires

Umpires numbers were again just about right, with umpires provided for the two highest Grades and occasionally down to

third grade. Umpires Co-ordinate Errol Cranney again dug deep to find 12 umpires for the semi finals (unfortunately one of

them failed to show up). The Finals also had umpires at both ends (though this is a cost that may have to be reviewed),

while all T/20 knockout games and finals had a black and white. It is noted that umpires should be paid in a more timely

manner when the Association is covering the costs.

Surprisingly, no one took up the Peter Tasker scholarship (costs covered for first two players passing an umpires course) in

2012/13, and it may be time again to look at arranging a local course.

Press

Thanks again are extended to The Manly Daily and Andrew Prentice in particular for the publication of cricket results and

news. It may be that we could have achieved more in this regard had time permitted, and the appointment of a dedicated

publicity office could assist.

Presentation Night

There were 78 attendees at the MWCA Presentation Night on June 1, 2013, slightly up in the 75 who attended in 2012 but

short of the 100 who were there in 2011. But it was a great atmosphere in the future rooftop Chinese Restaurant overlooking

the Corso and the beach. Congratulations to Carl Pymble on creating yet another unique and memorable evening in this

iconic 1859 building. Thank you also to David Lang and David Sheedy for their work in organising the trophies (though the

engravers made a few mistakes that have to be corrected).

In all 38 Presentations were made, including 9 Premiership Awards, 24 Batting/Bowling Awards (to 20 separate players) and

five keynote awards. Our newest life member Stuart Wragg was also on hand to receive a momento that he missed out on

having been on a fishing trip last season, while the Telegraph Shield side arranged trophies for leading run scorer and wicket

Page 9: 2013-14mwca.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/2952/files/MWCA 2013-14 Annual Re… · 2013-14 NINETY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT. MANLY WARRINGAH CRICKET ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT ... though that

The MWCA Committee again worked hard in 2012/13. There is much to organise, but apart from the double booking in the

5th grade semi our goals were generally met. I can see however why the Australian Constitution only provides for 3 year

terms. After 3 years as Sec I did find myself just trying to find time to keep up with the demands of the job rather than

pursuing new initiatives.

Fortunately, there was plenty of energy in the Committee. I would specifically like to mention Matt Brennan whose efforts

with the Participation Grant and Player Survey were outstanding, a great debut year of the Committee. Carl Pymble also put

in a large amount of work on devising a new grading system, which will go to a vote in August 2013. Mat Meers was like

Peter Sterling, always a step ahead of the game and an enormous assistance to me. Dom Wheeler re-typed the electronically

damaged handbook before doing an enormous amount of work as Telegraph Shield captain, Collaroy A1s player and T/20

organiser, but was always on hand to contribute to the MWCA. Brenden Ball worked hard to get the rep program up and

running for the season while Brett Holliday, Liz Pymble, Chris Dolman and Bill Clark provided typically valuable advice

and honesty. Simon Huthcinson, in his brief return to the Committee, cut through with comments like “can we just get three

sticks in the ground”. David Sheedy worked extremely hard and took responsibility as always. Errol Cranney, as Umpire

Co-ordinator, is a class act and never let the MWCA down, even though we sometimes let him down. My final mention is

for David Lang, our longest serving Committee Member (since 2000). Langy is one of those people who works hard behind

the scenes but takes no personal glory, no limelight. But if the MWCA needs someone to bat for their life, Langy is that

man.

The Committee sometimes gets a bad rap, but there is a genuine team atmosphere and I am yet to serve with a Committee

member who didn’t make a contribution or have the MWCA’s best interests at heart.

I have sincerely enjoyed my time as MWCA Secretary. I have learned a great deal. But after three years, with a young

family and mid career, I just don’t have the time so do not intend to nominate for the position in 2013/14, provided a

successor is found. I will however nominate for the Committee and provide whatever support, counsel, and corporate

knowledge I can.

PREMIERSHIPS

Harbord Bowling Club achieved a rare feat in 2012/13, winning both the First and Second Grade shields. This is a first for

Bowlos and only the 5th time in MWCA history after Terrey Hills (1982/3, 1987/8), Manly Leagues (1991/2) and Harbord

Diggers (2008/9).

DYRSL followed up their Fifth Grade Premiership in 2011/12 by winning the Third Grade comp in 2012/13, this from a

Club that hadn’t previously won a premiership since the A1s of 1997/8. Fourth Grade became the battle of the single team

clubs, Terrey Hills coming from behind on first innings to win an epic semi final against Collaroy and qualify for the Grand

Final against St Peters Manly Vale. St Peters ultimately hanged on to win their 9th MWCA flag in 51 years.

Harbord Diggers produced their 7th premiership winning side in five seasons with a steely performance in Fifth Grade. And

the Collaroy mentoring side won our development grade yet again, completing a four-peat, and not for the first time a win

against the odds in this grade.

This season’s Mike Pawley Cup was the most open competition yet. Collaroy and Cromer, who contested the epic Super

Over Cup Final a year ago, both made the semis, Cromer beaten by Manly Grade but Collaroy prevailing by 5 runs against

the independent Barbarians. T/20 finals day started with Adam Crosthwaite (100no) taking St Augustines to their first

MWCA title since 1975, before Collaroy defended the Mike Pawley Cup, the park cricketers digging deep to defend 123.

Collaroy also won their third consecutive Club Championship, this time by the biggest margin since the concept was re-

introduced in 2009/10, 380 points ahead of harbord Diggers who snuck into second.

The Douglas Darby Trophy for Cricketer of the Year

The Cricketer of the Year is awarded annually to the member who has most excelled on the field of play. The trophy is

named in honour of Mr E Douglas Darby, MLA for the seat of Manly from 1945-78 and Patron of the MWCA from 1948

until his death in August 1985.

The 34th recipient of the MWCA Douglas Darby Trophy for Cricketer of the Year is Scott Burdon of Mona Vale Cricket

Club. Scott has been a leading swing bowler for Mona Vale in the top grades for a number of years now but enjoyed a

particularly fine summer as a 39 year old this summer, taking 56 wickets at just 9.32, winning both the A1s aggregate and

average trophies. Scott was the only player to defend two trophies, having also cleaned up the A1s Bowling Awards with 33

wickets at 11.36 in 2011/12.

Also nominated were A1s bowler Simon Osbourne, A1s batsmen Nick Astin, Bill Clark, Luke Hammond and Damien

McIlwraith, along with Second Grade all-rounder AJ Fry and young Fifth Grade DYRSL batsman and captain Mark

Godfrey. Scott Burdon was, however, overwhelmingly endorsed among the 8 nominations.

The Arthur Little Trophy for Sports Person of the Year

The Sportsman of the Year Award is awarded annually to the member who has made an extraordinary or unusual

contribution to the Association either on or off the field. The award is named in honour of Arthur Little who was Patron of

the MWCA from 1955-78. There were seven nominations for Sportsman of the Year in 2012/13. In alphabetical order:

Ryan Dunstan: For his performances as a leader of the Harbord Bowling Club third grade side that completed the three-peat

in 2011/12 and now winning again when promoted to Second Grade in 2012/13. Ryan has conducted himself admirably as a

player, captain and delegate to the MWCA and has the respect of his peers.

Mark Godfrey: Held the DYRSL 5th Grade side together with his captain’s knocks on the field and his organisation off the

field. It’s a shame he was a year too old to play Telegraph Shield.

Stephen Hodgkinson: MWCA stayer has become the rock on which the Terrey Hills Club is founded. And he has built a

young team that is making Grand Finals, providing rep players, and have nothing but respect for their tenacious leader.

Mathew Meers: Nominated three years in a row. Mathematical genius and stand out servant of the MWCA and his own

Club. Added to his bow this year with Co-Commentary on Anthony Caruso’s Northern Beaches FM sports program “The

Bench”. In the Plate Final at Griffith Park, when a St Augustines 6 landed on the park bench at the northern end, Meersy

noted: “Great to see the players paying homage to us here on The Bench”. Inaugural Webmaster has been magnificent.

Liz Pymble: The most significant female member of the MWCA in a generation. Committee Member since 2007 and

Assistant Secretary since 2010. Always stood up to her male colleagues and gave a unique perspective. Liz also played an

important role in improving player behaviour with strong Judiciary policies.

Peter Thomas: Mona Vale stalwart was nominated for his sportsmanship, courteousness to opposing players and umpires

and quality as a player, scoring a breakthrough 104no against Collaroy at Collaroy in Round 7.

Dom Wheeler: Dom re-typed the electronically distorted Handbook while delivering Mimmos pizza pre season. He went on

to captain the Telegraph Shield side, be a key batsman in Collaroy’s A1s Grand Finalist side, organise the Collaroy B T/20

oldies team, then come into the T/20 Final and win Man of the Match to preserve park cricket pride against Manly Grade.

The MWCA Committee met on 11 April 2013 to decide the awards and much of the night was spent on this. The voting

system was re-jigged in an attempt to find a winner. First-past-the post resulted in a tie. 3-2-1 and it was still a tie.

Preferential voting was considered but the Committee ultimately voted for dual winners for the first time in the 34 year

history of the Award.

The 2012/13 Sports Man and Woman of the Year were Mat Meers and Liz Pymble, both of them worthy recipients.

Umpire of the Year

The third recipient of the MWCA Umpire of the Year award is Brian Watson.

Brian Watson was MWCA Sportsman of the Year in 1997/8 and a long term MWCA player who remembers most things.

Watto has been a mainstay of the MWCA umpiring ranks for many years, a veteran of A1s Grand Finals, though it surprised

may that he only passed 100 MWCA games as an umpire recently. Watto was in outstanding umpiring form during

2012/13. The NSWCUSA described his handling of the Rnd 3 tie between Collaroy and Harbord Diggers in A1s as

“perfect” and as “the umpire did the only thing he could do” (even his decision to call the Association Secretary at 9.10am

on the Sunday morning apparently). Feedback from players was uniformly positive of Brian’s performances during the

season, it being noted that “he runs a good game”.

Also nominated were former winners Marty Edgell and Murray Smith, along with up and coming young umpire Randall

Hinds, a former successful opening batsman for Wakehurst Redbacks.

2010-11 Martin Edgell

2011-12 Murray Smith

2012-13 Brian Watson

Representative Player of the Year

There were four nominations for Representative Player of the Year.

For the Telegraph Shield Nick Bonner (Collaroy Plateau) had a superb all round game in Round 2 with scores of 28 and

63no and 6/32, following that up with 4/51 in Round 3 and 3/42 in Round 4. Chris Martin (Terrey Hills) led the batting

aggregate and top scored with 62no in the Round 3 win while Dom Wheeler (Collaroy Plateau) led the side well and made

69 runs, took 4 catches and 3 stumpings.

However the Rep Player of the Year is Martin Shield opener Luke Hammond. Luke scored 88 and 57 in Manly’s Round 1

and 2 victories. Luke was also handy with the ball, taking 4 wickets at 22.

2010-11 Rob Lavery (Manly Breakers)

2011-12 Scott Kenna (Cromer)

2012-13 Luke Hammond (Collaroy Plateau)

Jill Pearce Rising Star Award

There were seven nominations for the Jill Pearce Rising Star Award this season. To be eligible players must be aged 20 or

under as at January 30 of the relevant season. The nominations, in alphabetical order, were:

Nick Bonner of Collaroy Plateau scored 281 runs and took 20 wickets in Third Grade, was part of Collaroy’s Mike Pawley

Cup winning side, and was second on both the batting and bowling lists for the Telegraph Shield. Sam Carruthers took 21

wickets in first grade and a further 23 wickets in second grade including his 5/21 in the Grand Final, and also represented the

Telegraph Shield side. Mitch Curran, last year’s winner, took 25 wickets and made 290 runs in Third Grade. Mike Pawley

Academy youngsters Oliver Davies and Jack Edwards both scored in excess of 200 runs for Harbord Diggers’ Sixth Grade

side. Long Reef’s Mike Singh scored 250 runs and took 25 wickets in Third Grade, while Colllaroy batsman Matt Terry

accumulated 482 runs.

The 12 person MWCA Committee voted on a 3-2-1 basis, Nick Bonner edging out Sam Carruthers by three votes, Mike

Singh placing third.

NSWDCA MARTIN SHIELD

After a rebuilding season in 2011/12 the Martin Shield team were ready for another serious tilt in 2012/13. Training sessions

were well attended, the selectors left with work to do.

Rnd 1 v Moore Park & South East at Nolans 1, 4 Nov 2012 – Match Won

This match was moved from Grahams Reserve due to leakage in the covers and the Manly batsman revelled in playing on

the familiar Nolans 1. Like Hammond (88) and Michael Maher (99) put on 178 for the second wicket, Adrian Capp bringing

it home with a quick fire half century as Manly posted an imposing 8/291. Simon Osborne had the radar working with the

new ball, almost unplayable with three quick wickets, Scott Kenna chiming in as Moore Park slumped to 4/14. The batsmen

recovered but left arm paceman Michael Counsell (3/20) kept a lid on them, Manly prevailing by 183 runs.

Manly Warringah 8/291 (51 - cc) (Langby 9, Hammond 88, Maher 99, Capp 57, Dessaix 1, Brady 16, Valentine 1, Kenna 8no, Ball 1no)

Moore Park & South East 108 (33.2) [Counsell 3/20 (7.2), Osborne 3/26 (9), Kenna 3/55 (16), Brady 1/0 (1)] (Killalea 3 catches...)

Round 2 v Georges River St George – Cahill Park, 25 Nov 2012 – Match Won

Georges River raced to 3/224 their opener Adam Payne making 122. Brenden Ball and Michael Counsell combined to limit

the Saints to 254 before Manly set off on an epic chase. At 5/88, Hammond (57) already out, it was a long way back but

2010/11 MWCA Cricketer of the Year began a rescue mission. Ryan Valentine and Max Frazer offered great support as did

Cass Westall who was joined by Ball when Brady was out two runs from vtictory. The MWCA Vice Pewdient made no

mistake, bringing up the winnings runs in the ultimate over.

Georges River St George 7/254 (55) [Ball 2/18 (2), Counsell 2/42 (10), L.Frazer 1/33 (8), Hammond 1/47 (12), Westall 0/39 (10), Brady 0/62 (13)]

12no, Ball 4no)

Round 3 v Inner West Harbour– Weldon Oval, 9 Dec 2012 – Match Lost

In the battle to win Pool A Scott Kenna took an early wicket before Simon Osborne chimed in with 3, but from 4/66 Inner

West Harbour built steady partnerships, making a defendable 9/222. Slipping to 5/29 Manly were out of the hunt, though

Phillip Dessaix and skipper Paul Killalea worked hard to restore some pride. Killa also took two more catches, making that

six in three games.

Inner West Harbour 9/222 (55) [Hammond 3/44 (10), Osborne 3/48 (17), Counsell 2/24 (10), Kenna 1/49 (11), Westall 0/43 (7)] Manly Warringah 8/257 (55) (Astin 0, Hammond 10, Ryan 11 Brady 2, Dessaix 22, Valentine 0, Killalea 27, Kenna 5, Ball 14, Westall 15, Osborne 10no)

Martin Shield 9 Dec, just before play by the looks of it. Three slips and a gully.

Scott Kenna took a very early wicket, getting an edge to Killalea at keeper.

Quarter Final v Churches Cricket – Ron Routly Oval, 13 Jan 2013 – Match Won

With Pool C teams given a favourable draw Manly had effectively ranked 5th in the pool games and were sent out to Western

Suburbs Magpie territory to play 4th ranked Churches at Concorde. Churches won the toss but sent Manly in. Manly fought

hard to compile 8/207 from their 55 overs on a worn pitch, Churches restricted to 5/96 from 34 overs when stumps were

drawn. This win has been described as the best by an MWCA rep team in at least two years, and one of the best in two

decades. Unfortunately, results have not been entered into MyCricket, the book apparently lost.

Manly Warringah 8/207 (55)

Churches Cricket 5/96 (34)

Semi Final v Inner West Harbour – Birchgrove Oval, 27 Jan 2013 – Washed Out. Manly Eliminated on 5 v 3 ranking

Would have been a great game. Manly were ready to go and had picked an exciting team to grace Birchgrove Oval, where

Souths beat Norths 11-7 in Round 1 of the 1908 Rugby League Premiership. Tragically, it was rained out. The MWCA’s

rep program has been exemplary in recent years, the most improved in the NSWDCA, but the weather gods have not shined

upon us. The Martin Shield team were back in the Steyne Hotel by lunch time midday and stayed until midnight, which

might explain why the scorebook’s lost, but was a great show of team spirit nonetheless.

Camden beat Inner West Harbour convincingly the final, 9/258 to 7/120, their first outright win since 1993, though they

were joint winners in 2007 and have 5 titles in all. But Manly are ever so close.

NSWDCA TELEGRAPH SHIELD

It is a great thing that then MWCA has re-introduced a Telegraph Shield team. It has enthused young cricketers in our own

area, given the U/23 Telegraph Shield a boost, and stands likely to be rewarded in Martin Shield performances in years to

come. And our team is getting better.

The Telegraph Shield began in 1922/3, Centennial Park the inaugural winners. It has been played every year since but for 8

occasions - 1940/1 to 1945/6 and, surprisingly, 2001/2 to 2002/3.

In 2011/12 Manly Warringah, playing their first Telegraph Shield for 20 years, finished 6th out of 7th with two draws and two

losses. In 2012/13 they would take a step forward.

Rnd 1 v Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai & Hills at Weldon Oval, 4 Nov 2012 – Match Lost

Newly appointed Manly Telegraph Shield Captain and Mimmos delivery man Dom Wheeler won the toss and sent his

heavily merged opposition into bat. Jeff Porter-Dening struck twice early to make it 2/12 but 72 to the HKRGH captain

J.Goldsmith got the 2011/12 dual premiers to 224. From 2/9 in response Manly couldn’t find a big partnership, Chris Martin

the mainstay with 27 as Manly fell short by exactly 100 runs.

H K-R-G & Hills 224 (52) [Diserens 4/48 (15), R.Kumar 2/39 (8), Porter-Dening 2/49 (11), MacGregor 1/27 (4), Carruthers 1/34 (7), Bonner 0/17 (7)]

Rnd 2 v Bankstown at Graham Thomas Oval, 25 Nov 2012 – Match Lost

The NSWDCA’s tradition of not giving these northside newcomers an easy draw continued when Manly were sent to

Bankstown in Round 2 for this difficult away game. Manly won the toss and elected to bat first in good conditions but

despite 36 to Tom Carden and 28 to Nick Bonner Manly could only manage 111. Bankstown replied with 200 but Nick

Bonner embarked on an epic all round performance, taking 6/32 with the ball before backing up with quick fire 63 not out

when Manly were sent back into bat, the outright avoided with a vengeance

Blacktown City, 2011/12 semi finalists and 1987/8 winners, won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that looked justified

at 1/46 until Bonner, Carruthers and in particular the spinner Diserens ripped through them, Blacktown all out for 107, Ulhaq

at number 3 stranded on 58no. Chris Martin and Dom Wheeler brought it home with a 95 run second wicket stand, Manly

Warringah’s first Telegraph Shield victory in two decades, and a convincing one at that, the margin a massive 9 wickets.

Rnd 4 v Fairfield-Liverpool at Fairfield, 16 Dec 2012 – Match Lost

A bus breakdown on the way to the game would have done little to settle the nerves of the Telegraph Shield side as they

travelled to Fairfield for this must win game. Still, when Fairfield elected to bat Manly went to an early lead, their

opponents 3/19, but eventually recovering to make 156 on 40.3 overs, Luke Diserens collecting another five wicket haul.

Despite starts to Chris Martin, Ryan Dunn and Sam Pfeiffer Manly were unable to build the partnerships required,

their chances of making the two team final series gone as they fell 53 runs short.

FIRST GRADE - THE CLIFTON D. LEAKE SHIELD

2011/12 Second Grade Premiers Long Reef entered an A1s team for the first time in their history and started pretty well by

making 288 on day one, including 104 to their captain Michael Maher. Harbord Diggers were good enough to run that down

thanks to 120 from new captain Adrian Capp. But Long Reef didn’t have to wait long to notch their first A1s win, beating

defending premiers Harbord Bowling Club by 3 runs in Round 2.

Diggers were the early pacesetters and remained undefeated until Round 8 when Collaroy beat them in a one-dayer thanks to

102no from Rob Minnett. Collaroy kept pace with Diggers and were still in the hunt for the Minor Premiership until

Diggers beat them at Plateau Park in Round 13, Capp and Clark making a quick fire 98 for the first wicket. Mona Vale were

also in the mix on the back of a mighty season from opening bowler Scott Burdon who took 56 wickets, but unable to win

any of their last four games the 2011/12 Finalists were forced to settle for third.

2011/12 Premiers Harbord Bowling Club had been slow to get going and benefitted from the return of players late in the

season, but still would have missed the semi finals had Long Reef been able to chase down 101 against Collaroy in Round

15. Wakehurst Redbacks tumbled out of contention with just two wins from the first 10 games but were undefeated from

that point, finishing just three points from the semi finals and avoiding the wooden spoon on percentages. In the final

analysis, there were no easy beats in A1s this season.

The 1st v 4th semi final at Nolans 1 would go down as one of the great games of the season. The bowlers were on top as

Diggers were restricted to just 90, unable to build any meaningful partnerships. Bowlos were in the box seat at 2/44 but

Diggers would not go away, Simon Osborne claiming 6/38. It was suddenly 8/80 but the tail end batsman hung on, the 9th

wicket falling on 90 before the winnings run was scored.

In the other semi Mona Vale’s strong bowling attack made early in-roads against Collaroy but a 208 run partnership between

veteran batsman David Moss (110) and Rob Minnett took the game away from them, the partnership only ending when

Minnett was run out for 99. Mona Vale displayed some fight in the chase but the stats show that apart from Pete Thomas’

104no in Round 7, no other Mona Vale batsman reached 60 in the entire season, the semi final no exception.

In the Grand Final Luke Hammond got Collaroy off to a start but third change bowler William Ross (5/5 off 7) destroyed the

middle order, Collaroy bowled out for just 73 from 42.4 overs. Harbord Bolwing Club passed that total with four wickets

down, Collaroy’s gutsy attempt at a second innings win unable to produce a miracle.

This was Harbord Bowling Club’s third Clifton Leake Shield in four years and their fourth consecutive final. They have

now won five A1s titles, putting them outright fifth on the all time list: Dee Why RSL (11), Manly Leagues (10), Manly

Colts (6), Wanderers (6), Harbord Bowling Club (5), Manly Catholics (4), Terrey Hills (4), Seaforth (3), Collaroy Plateau

(3), Balgowlah Rugby Union (3), Red Hill (2), North Manly Bowling Club (2), Queenscliff (1), Narrabeen Lakes (1),

Foresters (1), Manly AFA (1), Seaview (1), Harbord Diggers (1).

SECOND GRADE - THE LYLE PEARCE SHIELD

Manly Leagues were the final team promoted to Second Grade but were largely the squad that had been runners up in fourth

Grade in 2011/12, their Third Grade side of 2011/12 largely dismantling due to distance. Meanwhile the Harbord Bowling

Club side that finished last in the previous summer was effectively replaced by their Third Grade squad who, despite the

advanced ages of some, had won three consecutive titles in that Grade. Collaroy were also a different squad, most of them

coming from their young Fourth Grade squad of the year before.

Cromer emerged as the team to beat, fielding an A1s standard bowling attack that included left arm swing bowler Andrew

Wylie, the very fast Michael Counsell, and his fellow Martin Shield rep Scott Kenna. Cromer hit the competition lead with

an outright win over Manly Leagues in Round 4 and led all the way to the minor premiership.

The young Collaroy Plateau side were the surprise packets of the competition, excelling during the one day games in

particular to settle into second spot, their win over Harbord Bowling Club in Round 9 on Jan 5, when Hamish Evans scored

80, making people sit up and take notice. Harbord Bowling Club won their first three but lost their next three but then found

their consistency, winning seven of their next eight games, the Round 9 loss to Collaroy their only hiccup mid season.

The battle for fourth spot was a willing one. Wakehurst looked to have a semi final position wrapped up before being forced

to forfeit a couple of late season games due to player unavailability, earning just one competition point in the last four

rounds. The final spot in the semi finals came down to the converted one dayers in Round 15. Manly Breakers put the

pressure on Manly Leagues by beating Collaroy with the bonus point, running down 113 in 27.2 overs at Nolans 4. But only

moments after that result took place, over the footbridge at Passmore 1 Manly Leagues was completing one wicket win over

Harbord Bowling, climbing out of a grave at 7/33 chasing 90 and needing 8 an over, to claim the last finals spot with five

overs to spare.

In the first semi Cromer batted first, Simon Waygood and Jason Perry combining for a partnership that put the minor

premiers on track for 144. On day two Manly Leagues were blown away by the Cromer’s new ball attack, Counsell

lightning fast despite claiming only the Leagues skipper John Walton, Wylie the beneficiary with 7/21. Manly Leagues were

all out for 46 yet their opener Willy Flew carried bat for 32no. The other semi was a more even affair, Harbord Bowling

Club well contained by the young Collaroy team, only 40 from Matt Kaye ushering them to a defendable 93. Under semi

final pressure, that proved to be enough, Collaroy 7/17 before being all out for 61, Abhimanyu Rathore taking 5/6 from 8

overs.

The Grand Final would be a low scoring classic. Nothing really suggested this when Harbord Bowling won the toss and

made their way to 2/60 on the slow outfield. But then came a catastrophic collapse, Harbord Bowling losing their last 8

wickets for 10 runs as Counsell’s speed annihilated the lower order. The momentum, however, would swing sharply back,

veteran Aaron Campbell and young Sam Carruthers hitting back with the new ball. When Rathore trapped Kenna and

Carruthers claimed Ford Cromer were surely gone at 9/33.

But young Michael Counsell worked out how to deal with the slow Passmore 2 outfield – hit over it. Counsell struck two

sixes on his way to 25no, Andrew Wylie sticking around as the tension mounted. But the Harbord side, a team who has won

multiple premierships, prevailed once again, Wylie LBW to Carruthers, Cromer still 5 runs in arrears.

This was Harbord Bowling Club’s second Lyle Pearce Shield, their first coming in 2010/11, though that was with a different

squad. The 2012/13 winning squad have effectively won four consecutive premierships, counting the last three Third Grade

titles.

THIRD GRADE - THE J.D DURHAM SHIELD

The Collaroy Club elected to enter two teams in third grade in order to avoid a predominantly one day format in Fifth Grade.

Their Third Grade side from last year was called Collaroy Gold (which rhymes with old), their Sixth Grade finalists of

2011/12 promoted to Thirds and called Collaroy Blue (which rhymes with new, though I’m not sure if this was the reason

for the names). Also promoted from Fifth Grade to Third Grade were last season’s Des Sainsbury Shield winners Dee Why

RSL, while Harbord Diggers’ Fourth Grade premiers of 2011/12 came up as well. Harbord Bowling Club were largely the

Second Grade wooden spooners of last year, Long Reef the only side based on last year’s Third Grade squad.

It was hard to pick a likely winner in this Grade. Collaroy Blue jumped out to a surprise lead, the only undefeated team after

three rounds until Dee Why RSL moved into second, beating Collaroy Blue in Round 4 thanks to 128 from Pete Lusted. Just

as Dee Why looked like threatening for first place Harbord Bowling Club sprung an upset, former Grade player Ed Burgess

scoring 81 and taking 3/25 in Round 8 for the underdogs. As Dee Why entered a slump Long Reef found consistency,

taking the competition lead in Round 13 with a bonus point win over Collaroy Blue, Mike Singh making 65no. Long Reef

were undefeated after Round 5 and deserved their minor premiership, Collaroy Blue on their tail. Dee Why RSL held onto

third despite a 3 run loss to Long Reef in Round 5. Harbord Diggers, meanwhile, had moved quietly into fourth spot,

recovering from a Round 11 loss against their main challengers Collaroy Gold to qualify by being undefeated in their last

three games.

Long Reef hadn’t lost a game since November but a 78 run fourth wicket stand from Ben Ryan and Ben Paul put Harbord

Diggers on track for a healthy 170 on day one of the 1st v 4th semi final at Nolans 4. Long Reef were on track at 2/68 but

wickets began to fell regularly, Nicholas Paul the key with 5/53. Collaroy Blue lost their bowling spearhead Angus

McKenzie on the eve of the semi final when he cut his hand working at Manly Leagues Club, Dee Why RSL taking

advantage by racking up 205 at Terrey Hills Oval, Lusted and Mitch Chesher putting on 101 for the third wicket, Mike

Urquart chipping in with 61. Collaroy chased bravely, though even a rearguard 53 from Daniel Schacher couldn’t prevent

the underdogs from prevailing by 39 runs.

The dual semi final upsets left the Fourth and Fifth Grade Premiers of 2011/12, Harbord Diggers and Dee Why RSL, with a

chance to go back to back but in a higher grade. It was a tense final at Nolans 4. Dee Why got to 3/85 but were forced to

battle all the way, eventually dismissed for 139, N.Paul and B.Paul taking 3/30 and 5/40 respectively. But on day two Matt

De Groot was the hero for Dee Why RSL, taking 4/43 from 21 overs, before Mike Urquart produced incredible figures,

taking 6 for 9 from 28 balls as Diggers were bundled out for 88.

Dee Why RSL won their first comp in 14 years in 2011/12 and have now followed it up with their second in 15 years. This

is Dee Why RSL’s first JD Durham Shield, though a team named just Dee Why did win it in 1991/2.

FOURTH GRADE - THE ALAN LEE SHIELD

In 2011/12 St Peters Manly Vale finished 6th in Third Grade and 5th in Fifth Grade so Fourth Grade seemed a natural fit

when they returned to a one team Club in their 51st season, even though they did originally apply for Third Grade. Terrey

Hills and Collaroy came up from Fifth Grade because they preferred the two day format, while Dee Why RSL also went up a

grade from last year. Belrose also chose a two day format, Cromer the other survivors from the 2011/12 Alan Lee Shield.

Of the four single team Clubs in the MWCA, three of them ended up in Fourth Grade

St Peters set out on a dream run from September 8 to January 12, accumulating 60 points in the first 10 rounds, winning

every game, three of them outright. But they were defeated by Dee Why RSL in Round 11, Jeremy Wilkinson scoring 57,

and from there they limped into the finals, not winning again until they held off Cromer at Balgowlah Oval in Round 15.

The Rob Steel led Collaroy were typically solid, only once losing more than one game in a row, though were pressed for

second spot by Terrey Hills and Belrose RL. In Round 15 Collaroy secured second place with 7 wicket win over Terrey

Hills, Belrose suffering a four wicket loss to a plucky DYRSL, Steve Walker making 55no as Belrose were forced to settle

for fourth.

In the 1st v 4th semi at Nolans 5 St Peters watched their premiership hopes seemingly disappear as they were bundled out for

99, Belrose’s Matthew Smith taking 5/29. Belrose were well and truly on target at 2/62 but then lost their last 8 wickets for

19, Abishek Deveraj claiming four of those wickets at St Peters hung on by 18 runs. Meanwhile at Melwood Oval Terrey

Hills were about to defy gravity. In a low scoring thriller Collaroy were ahead on first innings, which is usually enough to

progress. But it was still late on Saturday when Terrey Hills were dismissed for 62 chasing 82. Collaroy’s second innings

was only marginally more successful than their first, David Taifalos taking 6/20 (and finishing with 8/36 for the match) as

Collaroy were bowled out for 87, 107 ahead. Terrey Hills only had about 25 overs to run down the target and got their just

in time with three wickets to spare.

The Grand Final therefore brought together two single team clubs, St Peters looking for their first premiership since they

won Sixth Grade in 2004/5, Terrey Hills for their first since Sixth Grade in 2008/9. Terrey Hills won the toss and sent St

Peters in but when Sebastian Wall was out for 55 the minor premiers were in some bother at 7/100. A wagging tail got them

to a relatively comfortable 171 but Terrey Hills were back in front as they made their way to 2/75. Ultimately the pressure

of chasing in a final eventually told, Terrey Hills losing 8 for 57 to fall 40 runs short of victory.

This is St Peters, Manly Vale’s first Alan Lee Shield since 1978/9, and their highest win in any Grade since 1997/8.

FIFTH GRADE - THE DES SAINSBURY SHIELD

With the reduction from seven to six grades in 2012/13, Fifth Grade had a very different look about it. Harbord Diggers had

requested discretion to drop down from thirds, while the other teams had come up from Sixth Grade or, in the case of

DYRSL and Cromer, were largely new squads. It was originally intended to change Fifth Grade to a predominantly one day

draw (5x2, 10x1) but that was compromised when some teams placed in Fifth Grade objected, one in particular who had

requested a two day format. Ultimately eight one dayers and seven two dayers were scheduled.

Harbord Diggers quickly asserted their dominance, undefeated until Round 10 when Manly Breakers beat them in a one

dayer at Passmore 2, Todd Harper making 59 for Breakers. Long Reef had been the other team making inroads, their 7 run

win over Wakehurst just before Xmas setting up their season. Wakehurst were assisted by the return of former North Steyne

batsman Tim Ryan who acted as a mentor of the side. DYRSL, the only club to expand their team numbers in 2012/13,

struggled to make up a side at times but young skipper Matt Godfrey did a great job both on and off the field, getting his

team to four wins and leading the 5th Grade run scoring with a classy 649 runs. Cromer meanwhile, who named themselves

the Cromer Expendables, had been the last team to enter the 36 team structure. The so called expendables looked like

making the semis after winning three in a row at round 12, but Anthony Suresh honoured Cromer by winning both bowling

trophies with 32 wickets at 16.5, and also sneaking into the batting average list

It was a credit to Manly Breakers as a team that they’d managed to finish easily in the top four yet their leading runscorer

was ranked 15th, their leading wicket taker not making the top 10. On day one of the 2nd v 3rd semi at Warriewood Long

Reef were about 7/167 at stumps, Manly Breakers well in the game, but when they turned up on the Sunday they learned

soccer had the grounds booked. Day two did not start until late and the MWCA has apologised for its role in the mix up,

Manly Breakers left with little hope of chasing Long Reef’s total. In the other semi, minor premiers Harbord Diggers were

reasonably clinical. Despite 5/44 to Robert McColl, Diggers made 171, their leading batsman Jye Blakely top scoring with

44, Wakehurst falling well over 100 runs short in the chase, Ashley Wilson taking 5/31.

Underdogs Long Reef gave themselves a chance in the Grand Final, Harbord Diggers forced to grind their way to 134, Matt

Gooden top scoring with 36 before wicket keeper Yohan McIntyre (28) chaperoned the tail. But Harbord Diggers’ bowling

attack was again too strong, Wilson, Wayne Dillon and Brad Spillane extremely frugal as Long Reef were restricted to just

50 from 37.4 overs.

This is Harbord Diggers’ fourth Des Sainsbury Shield, the others coming in 1995/6, 1998/9 and 1999/00

SIXTH GRADE - THE ALEX ANDERSON SHIELD

Sixth Grade was the MWCA’s mentoring grade in 2012/13, Collaroy looking for their fourth consecutive premiership. They

were joined by 2011/12 runners up Manly Leagues who were mainly seniors, having conceded the services of three pathway

juniors. The young Wakehurst Redbacks side from previous seasons were back, along with the young Harbord Bowling

Club team from last year’s Fifth Grade. Long Reef also returned, while the competition was boosted by the homecoming of

a new Mike Pawley Academy team to the MWCA, who played under the Harbord Diggers banner. Mike has long been a

believer that the best development for a young player is to play against seniors. The composition of Australian test sides

over many decades certainly reflects that.

Manly Leagues led the competition for most of the season and took the minor premiership for the second year in a row but

this time were well ahead of Collaroy (for whom mentor Toby Horstead broke the MWCA Sixth Grade runs scoring record,

formally set by G Castles of Belrose Rugby League in 1976/7). Wakehurst had a dangerous batting line up and were clear

third place getters while Harbord Diggers, containing some very talented young kids as well as some useful dads, surprised

the pundits by qualifying comfortably in fourth place. Long Reef and Harbord Bowling Club enjoyed some good wins mid

season, the latter in particular improving as the season went on.

In the 2nd v 3rd semi final at Lake Park Wakehurst Redbacks had Collaroy on the rack at 6/36 ater some fine bowling from

Peter Lipman. But mentor Andrew Davis steadied the ship with good support from juniors Cameron Baber and Bradley

Baber, Collaroy reaching an imposing 208. Aaron Willey offered brave resistance but Wakehurst lost too many early

wickets to mount the chase. An upset may have been missed at Lake Park but an even bigger one was brewing at Nolans 2.

Harbord Diggers, who have not entered their finals results, had made a patient 143 on the slow outfield, Manly Leagues

losing a key wicket before stumps. On day two Diggers mentor Steve Capriati bowled a marathon spell, Manly Leagues all

out for 116 from 62 over despite some stubborn resistance in the middle order from Marty Paikea and Rob Melchiore.

The final loomed as an interesting affair but Toby Horstead took control, making 87 out of the first 109 before Collaroy

accumulated 204 after batting all day. Diggers fought gamely but Collaroy’s teenage skipper Jake Carden, who took 4/7 in

the corresponding Grand Final last year, was at it again, claiming 4/16 as Collaroy prevailed by 93 runs.

This is Collaroy Plateau’s third successive Alex Anderson Shield (their only other coming in 1986/7) and their fourth

successive premiership in the MWCA’s mentoring grade.

T/20 – THE MIKE PAWLEY CUP & T/20 PLATE

This was the MWCA’s fourth T/20 and our most exciting yet. A record 13 teams registered, including four new entrants.

Dee Why RSL entered a team for the first time, while St Augustines College returned to the MWCA for the first time in

many years with an old boys team. Manly Grade also entered the Mike Pawley Cup for the first time. This was at the

instigation of Mike himself and, fittingly, was made up of original members of the Mike Pawley Academy team who played

in the MWCA and have gone on to represent their District at a senior level. We also saw an independent entrant The

Barbarians (not to be confused with the “MWCA Barbarians” of 2010/11), made up of former MWCA players, and with

plenty of talent. Harbord Diggers also returned to the Competition. Belrose did not re-register, while Cromer and

Wakehurst didn’t have B sides and there was no Cromer C, for a net gain of one. Meanwhile the Harbord Bowling B team

was re-framed as The Steyne Hotel.

In the first round of games on October 28 Harbord Bowling Club (Harbord Hurricanes) narrowly defeated Long Reef at

Passmore 1, just 4 balls to spare as they chased down 168. Collaroy knocked over Wakehurst by 6 runs while St Augustines

and Manly Leagues played out a 139 all draw. Meanwhile Dee Why RSL began their T/20 history with a 7 run win over

Steyne Hotel.

The preliminary rounds produced less even results from that point, and perhaps point to a more divisional structure in

2013/14, but where the Cup can still be won from anywhere. However the competition attracted a quality of player not

before seen. In Round 2 Wakehurst held off a St Augustines side containing first class cricketer Adam Crosthwaite, who

was caught by umpire Randall Hinds, bowled Michael Gainsford for 46. Current Manly First Grade bowler Mickey

Edwards turned out for the Steyne Hotel along with other grade players in that and the Manly Grade team.

After the pool games Cromer, with their sharp bowling line up, emerged as the top ranked team, winning all three games,

though Manly Grade were also undefeated but for a game they forfeited due to a calendar error. The Barbarians were the

surprise packet, though Long Reef’s Michael Keegan got the better of them in Round 2, while 92 to Nick Buxton in the final

round of pool games helped defending premiers Collaroy Plateau A qualify in the top four.

There were no surprises in the Cup Quarter Finals on January 20. The Barbarians held off Long Reef in a low scoring game,

105 to 95, former Manly Leagues player Jarrod Hitchcox the Baba’s hero. Rob Minnett’s 66 put Collaroy out of DYRSL’s

reach, while Manly Grade served notice with a comprehensive win over inaugural Cup winners Wakehurst. Cromer, as

minor premiers in the pool games, qualified automatically for the Cup Semis.

Semi Final day, Sunday February 10 and for the first time MWCA followers could sit at home or in their cars and tune in to

familiar names. Thanks to Anthony Caruso Radio Northern Beaches provided a quality coverage of the T/20 Cup Semi

Finals and Finals days at Griffith Park, adding enormously to the sense of occasion. I listened at home as Collaroy got off to

a good start, Dom Wheeler making 41 as the defending champs reached 7/145. But Barbarians, renowned for their batting,

never gave up, falling just five runs short in the first leg of the semi final double header. As the commentary boomed across

the field Cromer met their Waterloo in the form of Mike Pawley and David Gainsford’s Manly Grade side. Mathew Cole,

despite specialising as a batsman in Fourth Grade for Manly, demolished Cromer with the ball, the first man to take 6

wickets in an innings in MWCA T/20 history. All out for 59 Cromer’s star bowling attack had little hope, Manly Grade wise

to send them in.

The Plate semi final double header at Passmore also created interest (though promises of flash scores failed to materialise,

regrettably). On Passmore 1 the Steyne Hotel, containing a number of Grade players including first grade bowler Mickey

Edwards, struggled with Manly Leagues’ bouncy spinners on the synthetic pitch, restricted to just 83. MWCA Sec and

Manly Leagues captain Steve Shepherd donned the chest pad for the first time in his long career to face Edwards but

survived the trauma, 31no as Leagues prevailed by 8 wickets. On Passmore 2 Harbord Bowling Club Hurricanes made a

handy 8/139 but had an ominous warning of what was to come when Adam Crosthwaite took 3/17 with a hat a trick late in

their innings. St Augustines were in trouble at 3/26 but Crosthwaite was still there, putting on 102 with William Shaw

before hitting the winning runs with one ball and four wickets to spare, Crosthwaite a brilliant 94no.

The Grand Final double header at Griffith Park again provided a unique atmosphere, especially with Radio 88.7/90.4 on

duty. It was also two stories of park v turf cricketers. The weather had been dicey but cleared just in time, Plate Final

umpires Rigby and Hinds adjudging the ground fit to play at noon. An early 6 that landed on the park bench at the northern

end drew some classic commentary: Caruso – “That’s landed on the bench “Great to see the players paying homage to us

here on “The Bench””. Manly Leagues had St Augustines 4/56 after 11 overs, keeper Riz Muhammed wowing the crowd

with catches and stumpings but, as in the Plate semi final, Adam Crosthwaite was still there. Crosthwaite showed his class

with a finely measured innings, accelerating remarkably to bring up his 100 with a two on the 120th ball of the innings.

Shep’s Manly Leagues side started well in the chase but in the end Shep was just too old to execute, the required run rate

blowing out as St Augustines completed a triumphant return to MWCA Competition.

The Mike Pawley Cup Final was keenly anticipated, an even more classic battle between park and grade. MWCA Telegraph

Shield captain Dom Wheeler got Collaroy off to a good start with an impressive 49, Collaroy 0/70 at one stage. Dom was

third to go with the score on 80 and the momentum had shifted to the Manly Grade side, Collaroy losing 9/53 to be 9/123

after 20 overs, Sam Hole finishing with 3/15 off 4.

Manly Grade entered the Mike Pawley Cup under some pressure to perform against park cricketers and had been unbeaten to

this point. But in the final session of the tournament they suffered a shock – wickets falling at 1, 2,2 and 8, Mick Mackin

and Adam McNicholl doing the damage for Collaroy. Geoff Isaacs and James Boyer threatened a comeback as Manly

Page 33: 2013-14mwca.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/2952/files/MWCA 2013-14 Annual Re… · 2013-14 NINETY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT. MANLY WARRINGAH CRICKET ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT ... though that

33

Grade got to 5/70, but then Benny Wearing chimed in at the end, taking 3/14 as Collaroy defended their title. It was an upset

win in most peoples’ eyes, but also highlighted the quality of park cricketer we have in the MWCA, it being no mean feat to

hold off an athletic and impressive Manly Grade T/20 team. The MWCA is very grateful for the Grade Club’s involvement

and well as all the new teams this season, the Mike Pawley Cup starting to build the links we always hoped it would.

Mike Pawley was on hand to present the Cup to Collaroy Plateau captain Nirav Patel over local radio. Dom Wheeler and

Adam Crosthwaite were each awarded $20 as Man of the Match in the Cup and Plate Final respectively, so each of them

should probably pay about $6 to the ATO. It seemed unlikely the T/20 competition of 2012/13 could top the Super Over Tie

Cup Final of a year earlier, but by 24 Feb 2013 an even better story was emerging. The MWCA finally has its own Amco

Cup.

This was Collaroy Plateau’s second Mike Pawley Cup, the first Club to win it twice, and in consecutive years.

HISTORY

First Grade - The Clifton Leake Shield

The Clifton Leake Shield is awarded annually to the club winning the association’s premier grade competition. Mr. Leake Presi-

dent of the association from 1931 - 1943, presented the shield for competition in season 1939-40. The original shield was pre-

sented to the Manly Warringah RL Club after winning the competition in season 1990-91 when space on the shield was ex-

hausted. The Shield remains in the club to this day. A replacement shield perpetuating Leake’s name was instigated the follow-

ing season.

Second Grade - The Lyle Pearce Shield

The Beau Brummel Shield was first competed for “A” Grade’s 2nd division in 1947-48. The shield was donated by Mr Arthur

Little, a Vice-President of the association who later served as Patron. The Beau Brummel Shield has remained in the possesion

of the association since 1988, when space on the shield was exhausted. The association replaced it the following year with a

shield named in honour of Lyle Pearce.

Mr. Pearce was an office bearer of the association for 26 seasons, fourteen as President. He has also been Patron of the asso-

ciation since 1995. During his time as an office bearer, he has also been a delegate to the Manly Warringah Pittwater Sporting

Union, a delegate to the NSW Junior Cricket Union and has filled the roles of Treasurer and Senior Vice President of the War-

ringah Cricket Club.

Third Grade - The J.D. Durham Shield

John Davidson Durham is one of the most significant figures in over a century of districts cricket in NSW. He was originally

involved with the Balmain & District CA where he was Hon. Secretary from 1906-1919, President from 1919-1943 and Patron

1943-1953. After moving to the Manly area, he was a Vice President of the Manly Warringah CA from 1939-43 and President

from 1944-50. He also filled a number of officces for the NSW Junior Cricket Union, Including Hon. Secretary 1906-07 and

1939-1945, President from 1916-1939 and Hon. Treasurer from 1945 until his death in 1958. He was made a life member of

the New South Wales C. A. In 1943, of our association in 1950 and the NSWJCU in 1954. The NSW Districts Cricket Associa-

tion continues to run the John Durham Shield as an inter-district competition for under 19 players.

The A3 grade was initialised in 1964-65 after growing player numbers saw the need for an additional “A” grade. The shield

presented that season was named in honour of Alan Lee (see B1 Grade notes). However, the grade was not contested again

until 1972-73, this time for the J. D. Durham Shield. The original shield was presented for 5th grade competition from 1958-59

to 1960-61, for the under 16 and D Grade competition from 1961-62 to 1966-67.

Fourth Grade - The Alan Lee Shield

From 1948-49 to 1961-62, the 3rd grade competed for Wigney Shield. This was a donation to the association in 1947-48 by A.

E. Wigney & Sons for “B” grade competition. In 1959-60 and 1961-62, the grading system saw 3rd grade split into 2 divisions,

with division 2 playing for the Campbell Shield. With the renaming of grades 1962-63, the B1 grade continued to compete for

the Wigney Shield until 1964-65. The following season saw this grade compete for the Alan Lee Shield, originally awarded for

the inaugural A3 competition. Alan “Pappy” Lee was a long serving Vice-President and committee member of the association,

serving in several voluntary capacities. Additionally, he acted on the committee of the Manly Warringah District Club for several

years. He is also the father of former Australian Women’s test player Helen Lee, and NSW player Terence Lee.

Fifth Grade - The Des Sainsbury Shield

From 1948-49 through to 1961-62, the 4th grade competed for the W. D. Thomson Shield. The 1962-63vseason saw 4th grade

renamed B2 grade, with the grade playing for the Campbell Shield up to the 1964-65 season. The following season saw teams

in this grade compete for the Wigney Shield, previously awarded to the B1 premiers. The Wigney Shield continued to be pre-

sented to the B2 premiers up to 1987-88. The following season saw teams in this grade compete for the Des Sainbury Shield,

which continues to this day. This original shield is in the possession of the association, having been awarded to the C3 prem-

iers from 1976-77 to 1986-87.

A former mayor of Manly, Mr. Sainsbury was president of the association from 1955 to 1965, and later served as patron from

1991 until his death in 1995. He was instrumental in the foundation of the Saturday Morning Boys Competition, which has

evolved into the Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association. He was also the founding president of the Manly Warringah

Sporting Union.

Sixth Grade - The Alex Anderson Shield

With competition numbers expanding, the association instigated the B3 grade for season 1975-76. The following

season saw the Alex Anderson Shield presented, named after the former association secretary and president.

In addition to his tireless work for our association, Mr. Anderson also served as secretary of the Manly Warringah

District Club, was the first secretary of the Manly Warringah Sporting Union, was a delegate to the NSW Junior

Cricket Union as well as serving on it’s committee, and was the first senior vice-president of the Warringah Crick-

et Club. He also served as patron of the Association from 1985 until his death in 1991.

In 2013-14 it was awarded to the winners of the inaugural one-day completion winners.

Seventh Grade - The Matt Little Shield

Until 1969-70 the MWCA presented the “Onoto-Pen” trophy to the Club Champions, who were determined by the best average of points per

matches played in the preliminary rounds. In 1970-71 the MWCA and Manly Civic Club decided to perpetuate the memory of one of their players

by awarding the Matt Little Memorial Trophy. The initial investment was $200, with interest to provide a bat to the winners of the Club

Championship. This continued until 1983-4 when the reintroduction of the finals coincided with the cessation of the Club Championship until it

was reinstated, with different criteria, in 2009-10. The following season the new B4 grade award was named the Matt Little Shield. In 2013-14 it

was awarded to the winners of the inaugural Presidents Cup competition.
