Background

Used by over 130,000 vehicles per day, the M50 is subject to considerable wear and tear. As part of a road marking and road stud maintenance program in 2014, extending from Junction 6 to Junction 9, there was a requirement to fit surface applied road studs on a 375 metre bridge deck on the Northbound Carriageway.

Examining possible solutions, contractor Highway Markings Ltd, working for M50 Concession Ltd who operate and maintain the M50 motorway, proposed the use of a new polyurethane resin adhesive system.

Results

Supplied by highway maintenance specialists Jobling Purser, the Coldfyx system comprises of two components – base and activator. It has been designed for use as a cold applied adhesive for installing surface mounted road studs for heavily trafficked roads. The system is fast and simple to install without the need for any equipment. It can be applied directly onto asphalt, macadam or concrete surfaces and can be installed over a wide temperature rang. A rapid cure version is available where fast opening of the road is required.

Danny Murphy of Highway Markings explained: “We were looking for a solution to the problem of the surface mounted reflective road studs debonding due to the very heavy traffic levels and decided to trial Coldfyx on this section of the M50 Motorway. Installation was fast and straightforward and the performance of the adhesive system has been very impressive. Fifteen months on, we have found that despite some damage to the road studs due to the excessive stress caused by the high traffic volumes, they have not become debonded and remain firmly fixed into place thanks to the Coldfyx adhesive.”

Therefore, long-term performance and minimum maintenance that mean reduced roadworks are important considerations.
