Our coldatnight blanket is woven specially for us at an historic

water mill on the banks of the River Teifi.

The water that flows through the Teifi, around fforest camp, through Cardigan town and past our store on

Teifi wharf is the very same water that turns the wheel, that powers the loom, that weaves our blankets.

Our blanket is a traditional weave unique to fforest.

Woven on a 1930’s Dobbcross loom, using 100% pure new wool which is spun and dyed in England.

Each thread is put through the heddles by hand, as it always has been.

The Mill has been weaving for 180 years,

It can take a while to get this good .

Beauty is in the spirit, the heritage, the place.

There is a natural untutored beauty in unique patterns and colour combinations that evolved through the experience of the expert weaver and the availability of natural dyes including madder and cochineal for

reds, woad and indigo for blues, and various berries and lichens for the more muted tones.

Although termed ’tapestry’ the material is a double-weave cloth woven in two-ply woollen yarn. This double-cloth structure produced practical and

hard-wearing bedcovers, as well as bold reversible patterns. The patterns featured on these 'tapestry' quilts were unique to individual mills.

After building a collection of these blankets for more than 20 years, sian has reinterpreted the design and colours to develop a growing range of

housewares, clothing and accessories.

Warmth is in the tradition, the colour, the care.

Welsh wool has wrapped the sheep standing in the hills over long

winters for thousands of years. The quality of the wool, the construction of the weaves, creates a material that is naturally

insulating, warm, cosy.

The spirit of warmth also imbues the weave. The smell.

Bury your face in a blanket and breathe in the hills, the rain, the river, the mill, the hands of the weaver, the oil of the loom

Be warm.

The tapestry weave blanket is considered to be the most typically

Welsh of all woollen bed covers.

These blankets are not, in fact, made from tapestry at all but rather a double-weave cloth woven in two-ply woollen yarn. This double-cloth structure produces a practical and

hard-wearing material.

The nature of the weave means that the material is double sided, the principal design on the front with a form of negative weave on

the reverse side giving richness and added complexity to the designs.

We have interpreted a traditional design, with a few tweaks and

new colours, creating contemporary heritage appeal.

For centuries weaving has carried on in Wales, a close

relationship between the land, the sheep, the farmer, the river, the mills. these single-family mills used wool bartered from the sheep farmers and in exchange would trade flannel, blankets

and knitting yarn.

Our coldatnight plaid blanket is a herringbone twill weave, criss-crossed in a classic large window plane check, over-laid with 3 smaller checks creating a landscape of fields, river and track. Bold and simple. Woven from 100% pure new wool, spun and

dyed for us in Yorkshire. Each end is beautifully finished with blanket stitching.

Warm and comforting the power of natural wool.
