Cog-Neuro Speech Therapy app helps people with communication difficulties to regain their ability to communicate, maintain relationships and re-integrate in the community. It revolutionizes the speech therapy service for people with communication difficulties following a stroke, brain injury, and other progressive neurological disorders, including Parkinson’s disease and Multiple sclerosis. By using Cog-Neuro Speech Therapy, patients can access services during the time when they are most stimulable for rehabilitation or while waiting for speech therapy appointment from the NHS. Patients and their families who also want intensive speech therapy can also use the app alongside speech therapy sessions to support their current rehabilitation program. The Cog-Neuro app has been developed for the iPad. It has 5 general areas representing the 5 areas of language namely; listening, speaking, reading, writing and thinking (semantics). Gamification and stealth learning has been used to encourage interactivity and concentrated attention, which has been shown to be the key factor in neuroplasticity and brain regeneration. Thus, in each of the 5 areas of language, there are a number of mini-games that target specific linguistic skills. There are visual instructions and trial options at the start of each game and feedback is given to users. In addition, each of the games will have 3 levels of difficulties to adjust to the user’s level depending on the user’s improvement. At the end of the game a report is generated which could be sent via email. It is also possible customise the game for the client. Company director Sheiladen Aquino envisages that with a timely, intensive and easily accessible speech therapy app service she will be able to widen the regional scope of the current private practice but also generate revenue from subscription and licensing fees. CEMAS has provided a comprehensive and integrated approach to assisting SMEs like myself. From Matthew’s the initial stages of app development, to marketing support, Clayton’s leadership of clear and timely decisions in facilitating the project to Eilian, Priyanka and Dan’s technical expertise. Everyone worked in synchrony to deliver the project. Eilian and Priyanka attended a stroke association meeting to conduct a user experience workshop. In this workshop they spent time to understand how best to design and planthe features of the app to cater for people with communication difficulties. I have seen not only their dedication to make the app relevant to the user but moreover their flexibility to reach out and include people with disabilities in technical decision making.
