The specialist subjects of Art, Music and Physical Education will be running on this day so you will have an opportunity to see what happens in these classes as well. A full timetable of activities on this day will be sent home early next week.

SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING REPORT FOR MAY

The CNPS School Council met on Thursday 9th and we reviewed and accepted the finance and subcommittee reports (from the Education, Buildings and Grounds, Parents and Friends, OSHP and Communication subcommittees). The feedback to council on the first farmers market was unanimously positive, and we trust that this will be a great community building and fundraising initiative going forward. In other news, we have had a vacancy on school council and Megan Eddie has kindly returned to council duties to fill the gap, while existing council member Paul Sutton was elected to the role of treasurer. The Buildings and Ground sub-committee will begin the next phase of work on the playground maze on Sunday 19th May.

Ray MaddenPresident, CNPS Council

My name is Paul Sutton and I am new to the School Council this year.I have lived in Coburg for six years with my wife, Tamara, and three daughters - aged five, three and eight months. My eldest daughter, Ada, started in Prep this year. I am a furniture-maker by trade and have a bachelor of Fine Arts and Grad Dip in Arts Management. Both my parents and my wife’s parents were teachers so I have a great appreciation for education and educators. I value access to high quality schooling for all children and I believe that our school should offer a broad and exciting range of experiences and programs.

National Walk2School DayFRIDAY 24TH MAY It’s National Walk 2 School Day! Let’s keep the great support continuing on from last year. We are asking that students, parents and staff either walk or ride to school, if possible, on this day. If you can't walk all the way maybe you can use the “Part-way is okay” idea where you stop the car, a reasonable distance away from the school, and walk or ride the rest of the way. I challenge all students to see if their grade can have the highest number of students participating! Lyn Evans

LOST PROPERTYLost Property (First Aid Room) has a lot of unclaimed school uniforms that do not have the students name on them. Please check lost property before next Monday 20th May if your child is missing anything.Anything unclaimed after Monday will be donated to the second hand uniform stall.

Prep Mother’s Day BreakfastOn Friday, May 10th, the Prep students had a Mother’s Day Breakfast. There was toast with jam, Vegemite or honey. There was a choice of tea or coffee to drink.

The children presented their Mums with cards, placemats and handmade flowers. Each student had a photo taken which will eventually form a gallery in the Prep hallway.

Special thanks to Ms Mamic and the Grade 5 students for their assistance on the special day.

We hope all the Mums in the School Community had a very “Happy Mother’s Day”.

AUSLAN Incursion As part of our unit ‘People Who Help Us’ the Grade 1 and 2 students had an incursion from AUSLAN Australia. We were lucky enough to have James, a person born deaf, and his interpreter, Cheryl, visit us. We learnt all the things deaf people can do, some basic signs and how to spell our names. Here are some student reflections:

Today at school James and Cheryl came. He could not hear us. We learnt how to spell our names in sign language. I loved them visiting. Polly D

Today at school we had a visit from James. We learnt about sign language. We also learnt how to do our names in sign language. We learnt that deaf people know how to drive a car. Jesse M

Today we had a deaf person come to our school. We learnt how to say stop and hot and cold. We learnt how to spell our names. To wake up, they put a device under their pillow to connect to the alarm clock. Daniel M
