COBBER GAMEDAY 2008 Concordia vs. NDSU – April 29, 2008 GAME #26 NDSU (922/29 The Summit) at CONCORDIA COLLEGE (1312/68 MIAC) April 29, 2008 Jake Christiansen Complex Moorhead, Minn. GAME TIME: 4 p.m. (1 – nineinning game) SERIES: NDSU leads 55321 SERIES STARTED: 1909 SERIES SYNOPSIS: Today’s game marks the first meeting between the border rivals since the 2005 season. In that game, NDSU scored seven times in the fifth inning en route to a 173 victory at Newman Outdoor Stadium. It is the first game between the teams played at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex since 2003 when NDSU prevailed 110. The Bison have won six of the past seven meetings between the two teams in a stretch that dates back to 1998. The lone win for the Cobbers during that streak came in 2004 when CC won 128 at NDSU. In that game Concordia used four home runs to beat the Bison. Ryan Hebrink hit a pair of HR’s for the Cobbers. Brian Schumacher and Scott Johnson hit solo shots in the game to finish off the Concordia long ball attack. CC wasted only one inning before jumping on top of the Bison. In the second frame, the Cobbers put their first two batters on base and then benefited from a costly Bison error to score the first two runs of the game. Concordia added to the lead in the third inning when they scored three more runs all via the long ball. North Dakota State was able to get a solo run in the bottom of the fourth inning before the roof fell in on the Bison in the top half of the fifth. The Cobbers scored seven runs in the frame and sent 12 men to the plate. The highlight of the inning was Hebrink's threerun blast that put Concordia up 81. NDSU scored the final seven runs of the game, but by then the game was well in hand for the Cobbers. The Cobbers hammered out 13 hits in the game, and seven of the nine starting hitters amassed at least one hit. Schumacher and Scott Johnson led the Cobber offense by getting three hits each. Schumacher finished the game 3for4 with three runs scored, and Johnson was 3for5 with two runs scored and two RBI's hitting from the leadoff spot...NDSU has also claimed wins in nine of the past 11 meetings between the two schools...the last six games in the series have all featured doubledigit run totals for the winning team...the most runs scored by a single team in the series in a game is 24 by the Cobbers when CC posted a 2415 win at home on May 5, 1997...the longest winning streak by either team in the series is six games. Concordia won six straight from 1988 through 1992. CONCORDIA UPDATE Concordia returns to the diamond today to square off against non conference foe NDSU. The Cobbers had a pair of doubleheaders postponed over the weekend thanks to the springlike storm that came through the FM area on Friday and Saturday. CC was swept by Bethel (8 4 & 54) in their lone doubleheader last week. That series gave the Cobbers a serious case of the “woulda, coulda, shoulda’s.” In the opener, Concordia gave up five unearned runs and lost by four, and in the second game they conceded a threerun, walkoff homer in the bottom of the seventh. The two losses drop the Cobbers’ overall record to 1312 on the season. UNCHARTED TERRITORY Concordia junior catcher Kyle Johnson continues to tear through MIAC pitching this season. Johnson currently has a program record 19 game hitting streak. He has a chance to become the first player in program history to hit safely in 20 straight games today. Johnson leads the Cobbers in hitting in 2008 with a .448 average. He is currently leading the MIAC in RBI’s (19) and total bases (45) and is tied for the league lead in home runs (4) in conference games. THE .400 CLUB The Cobbers have three players this year hitting above .400. Besides Kyle Johnson, junior first baseman Scott Schumacher is batting .414 and sophomore outfielder Nick Lewis is hitting .408. The last time CC had a player hit above .400 was in 2006 when Billy DeNet hit .418 for the season. The last time Concordia finished the season with more than one player hitting above the .400 level was back in 1992. A BETTER BRAND OF ALUMINUM Concordia is currently batting .316 this season. That is fourth in the MIAC and an increase of over 30 percentage points from last season when they hit .280. The Cobber record for team average in a single season is .344 set back in 1985. UP NEXT Concordia has three conference doubleheaders to finish off the regular season. After taking a break for finals this week after today’s game, the Cobbers will play St. Mary’s at Winona State on Saturday and then return home to host St. Thomas on Monday, May 5 at 1 p.m. and Augsburg on Tuesday, May 6 at 1 p.m. NDSU UPDATE NDSU heads into today’s game after a nineday layoff. The last game action for the Bison came on Apr. 20 when they dropped a 65 decision at Indiana UniversityPurdue University Fort Wayne. That loss ended a two game win streak for NDSU which happened to be their first two wins in Summit league history. The Bison have had a mixed bag in 2008. They have posted wins over the University of Minnesota and Cleveland State and have close losses to Kansas, Creighton and leagueleading Oral Roberts. On the other side of the spectrum, they also have double digit losses to Oklahoma, Wichita State and leagueleading Oral Roberts. LONG ON LANGLAIS NDSU is led in hitting by senior shortstop Ryan Langlais. He is currently hitting .322 and named Co Player of the Week in the Summit League on April 21. He has currently hit safely in 11 straight games and is coming off a 10for21 (.476) weekend at IPFW. A LONG DAY AT THE OFFICE North Dakota State’s 17inning loss to Southern Utah on April 12 is now the longest game listed in the NDSU baseball record book. It went longer than the 16inning 21 loss to MSU Moorhead on May 10, 1972. NDSU and Southern Utah were tied at 5 after nine regulation innings before going scoreless into the 17th. A bad hop single with two outs scored the first two runs of a sevenrun frame for SUU. The game lasted 5 hours, 26 minutes and seven pitchers combined to throw 607 pitches. MIAC Players of the Week April 28, 2008 Player of the Week St. Olaf College sophomore outfielder Tyler Jones (Farmington, Minn.) extended his hitting streak to six over the Oles' 50 week, as he went a combined 8for 10 in a sweep of Saint Mary's on Tuesday, 4for7 against Gustavus on Wednesday and 2for3 on Sunday against Carleton. His 14for20 week, helped by his third and fourth fourhit games of the year on Tuesday, raised his average from .337 to .408.

Pitcher of the Week Hamline University senior pitcher Josh Roiger (West St. Paul, Minn./Sibley) led the Pipers to a road sweep of the #13 Tommies last week, coming in from left field for the save in the seventh inning of the opener. He then returned to the mound 30 minutes later to pitch a completegame shutout in game two. The sweep over St. Thomas on their field marked the first time that the Tommies were swept in an MIAC baseball doubleheader in six seasons, covering 62 doubleheaders. It was the first time St. Thomas was swept at home in 10 years. While facing the minimum number of batters in the seventh inning in the game one 65 win Roiger struck out two and gave up one hit. In the completegame shutout in game two, Roiger walked none and gave up just four hits, none with runners on base. He also threw six strikeouts in shutting down the Tommies.

Meet Head Coach Tod Brown Tod Brown, formerly the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for eight years at Bowling Green, is in his first year as head baseball coach at North Dakota State. Brown, 36, was part of two division titles and a regularseason championship in the MidAmerican Conference while at Bowling Green, and he coached two MAC Player of the Year awardwinners and eight professional draft picks.

In 1993, Brown won six games and had eight saves while setting Arizona’s singleseason record with 35 appearances. He was named to the AllMidwest Regional team as the Wildcats fell one run shy of a College World Series appearance.

NDSU LAST GAME RECAP (Courtesy of the NDSU SID) April 20 NDSU 5 @ Indiana UniversityPurdue University Fort Wayne 6 FORT WAYNE, Ind.Jared Davis and Garrett Seagraves hit two late home runs to rally IPFW past North Dakota State 65 and earn a fourgame series split in Summit League baseball Sunday, April 20. Davis hit a twoout, tworun homer to chase NDSU starter Shane Bushland and pull the Mastodons within 43 in the seventh, and ninthhitting Seagraves hit a threerun shot off reliever Chris Paterson with two outs in the eighth to put IPFW ahead 64. North Dakota State (922, 29) got one run back in the top of the ninth when designated hitter Shannon Ekermans led off with his second homer of the year.

Ekermans (24) was the losing pitcher despite throwing only twothirds of an inning in relief of Bushland. He came on to end the seventh but put two of the three goahead runs on base in the eighth with a walk and hitbypitch. It was the first start of the year for Bushland, who earned a relief win and a save in Saturday's doubleheader sweep. He allowed three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks in 6 2/3 innings.Ekermans hit 3for4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ryan Langlais, Kenny Beese and David Williams had the only other Bison hits, including Williams' first home run in the fourth inning that gave NDSU a 31 lead.

The Bison started the scoring in the second when Ekermans doubled and Williams walked with one out. Ekermans came in when Kyle Harrison reached on an error and Williams scored on Beese's single up the middle with two outs.

IPFW (9241, 57) pulled within a run in the bottom of the second when Seagraves lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. It was 31 in the sixth when Langlais led off with a single, moved to second on an outfield error, then scored on an Ekermans double one out later to put NDSU ahead 41.
