    Targeting Indian and East Asian Homes

    Criminals are targeting the homes of peopleof Indian and East Asian ethnicity in MetroAtlanta, across the United States and in theUnited Kingdom.

    This is likely due to a perception by the

    criminals of cultural norms and businesspractices specific to the Indian / Asiancommunity.

    Perceptions

    The presence of large quantities of high-quality gold and jewels kept at Indian homesas part of traditional ceremonial customs.

    The presence of large quantities of cash keptat the homes of Indian and East Asian small

    business owners due to cultural norms and adistrust of banking institutions.

    A home invasion is a type ofrobberythattakes place when a

    person(s) enters your home whileyou are there and takes yourbelongings from you by force,

    intimidation, or by use of a weapon(armed robbery).

    Burglaries in Precinct 4

    Between January 1st and July 14th of 2011,there were 186 residential burglaries that tookplace within Precinct 4.

    We believe 17 of those were targetedbecause of the Asian ethnicity of the victim.

    Burglary Trend

    The developing trend was communicated tothe uniformed officers in Precinct IV, theCriminal Investigations units at the otherprecincts, our Robbery Unit, and metro areaagencies.

    A vague description of a vehicle that was

    seen in the area of a couple of the burglarieswas also provided to the officers.

    Burglary Arrest

    On July 14th a uniformed officer conducted atraffic stop on Sandy Plains Road of asuspicious vehicle.

    Simultaneously a victim of Indian ethnicitywho lives on Eastbrooke Trace called 911 toreport a burglary.

    Pursuant to an investigation 3 adult maleswere charged with Burglary.

    Home Invasions in Precinct IV

    Between January and July 2011 there were 2home invasions (robberies) that took place inPrecinct 4.

    Anniston Court in May

    Oak Trail in July

    The victims in each of these robberies wereof Indian ethnicity.

    Home Invasions in Precinct IV

    Also in July, a home invasion took placewithin the City of Mariettas jurisdiction on

    Cameron Glen Drive. The victims in this crime were of Indian

    ethnicity.

    After the Arrest

    After the arrest, targeted burglaries droppeddramatically.

    Between July 15th and December 18th, therewere 172 residential burglaries in PCT 4.

    We believe 2 of those were targeted becauseof the victims Asian ethnicity.

    since July.

    Crime Prevention

    Install a monitored Security System

    Set your alarm in the evenings, when you arenapping or showering, and every time you

    leave. Lock your doors, windows, and garages.

    Install exterior lighting on a timer.

    Do not keep large quantities of cash andjewelry at home use a safety deposit box

    Pay attention to your surroundings. Call 911and report suspicious people and vehicles!

    Crime Prevention

    If someone knocks at your door, DO NOTIGNORE THEM!

    Yell through the door that you are not

    interested. Burglars often knock at the door and if you

    dont answer, they will kick in the door

    thinking no one is home.

    Call 911 and report the suspicious person soofficers can check them out.

    Crime Prevention

    Keep your personal information includingaddress off social media sites and restrictwho gets to see your page.

    Do not post your vacation plans on socialmedia sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

    Opt out of geolocation services such asFacebook Places(and make sure your teens

    do to). When you post your location, you areletting everyone know that you are not athome.

    Keep your home phone number unlisted.

    Crime Prevention

    Limit who you tell about your valuables.

    Make business deposits during the day andtry to have someone else with you. Dont take

    the money home with you.

    Pay attention to your surroundings. If youbelieve you are being followed, call 911 and

    drive to a busy, well lit area such as a QuikTrip or Race Trac gas station.
