BASF Prepares for its150th Anniversary in 2015

BASF is introducing a new claim “We cre-ate chemistry” in its logo. This change tothe company’s brand identity underlineshow BASF collaborates and innovates withcustomers and partners to contribute to asustainable future. The new claim is derivedfrom BASF’s “We create chemistry” strat-egy, which was announced in 2011. “Sincewe launched this strategy, BASF has beenincreasingly focusing on offering its custom-ers functionalized products and solutions

based on chemistry as a clever combinationof compounds. It is therefore the right timeto make the next step and move from ‘TheChemical Company’ to ‘We create chemis-try.’ The new claim refers not only to sciencebut also to the chemistry between people, which is at the core of BASF and its brand,”explained Kurt Bock, chairman of the Boardof Executive Directors of BASF.

Initially, “We create chemistry” willmainly be used in the logo in circum-stances directly related to the company’s

150th anniversary. As of January 1, 2015,it will be applied broadly throughoutBASF. The other elements of BASF’s cor-porate design, for example the six corpo-rate colors, will remain unchanged.

In accordance with its company pur-pose “We create chemistry for a sus-tainable future,” BASF’s goal is to bringtogether people and ideas in a process ofco-creation. BASF is inviting people to col-laborate on developing solutions to globalchallenges related to urban living, smart en-

ergy and food throughout the anniversaryyear. To spark the discussion, the companyhas launched an interactive platform calledCreator Space online at www.creator-space.basf.com. Here, customers, scientists, the public and BASF experts are invited toexchange thoughts and ideas.

In 2015, insights from the onlineconversation will form the basis for dis-cussions at numerous live and virtualco-creation events around the world. Theaim is to use the anniversary year to drive

innovation and make a lasting contribu-tion to society and BASF’s business.

“Our 150-year history shows that chem-istry is an enabler for new ideas and solu-tions. Innovation in the 21st century willrequire new strategies and tools, and socialnetworks are an important part of the mix.We invite everyone to join the conversationon Creator Space online,” said Bock.

Anniversary discussionsfocus on three topicsBy 2050, there will be more than nine bil-

lion people living on Earth. The needs ofthe growing world population for goodliving conditions, energy and food canonly be met through innovations. BASFhas identied three topics where chemis-try plays an important role that will formthe focus of the anniversary program:

    • Urban living: It is estimated thatmore than 70 percent of the world pop-ulation will be urban dwellers by 2050.As cities grow rapidly, so do the social, environmental and economic challeng-

es, for example, in ensuring fresh watersupply, improving waste management

as well as offering efcient and acces-sible mobility and housing.

    • Smart energy: Dramatically risingenergy demand is one of the world’s mostpressing challenges. A smarter energy fu-ture requires deriving more cost-efcientenergy from clean and renewable resourc-es like wind and solar, increasing energyefciency and improving the storage andtransportation of energy.

    • Food: The challenge of feeding the

world’s growing population by providinga sustainable supply of food is one of themost crucial in the next decades. Avoidingfood loss and food waste, ensuring nutri-tious food and improving the efciency offood production is necessary to preventundernutrition and malnutrition.

Further details of the anniversary pro-gram will be announced at a press confer-ence on December 4, 2014, and then therewill be regular updates on all activities onCreator Space online. One highlight of the

year will be the Anniversary Celebration inLudwigshafen on April 23, 2015. CW

PPG Supplies DURANAR and DURACRON Metal Coatings for Port of Miami Tunnel

PPG Industries’ coil and building products group has suppliedDURANAR XL and DURACRON coatings to the recently openedPort of Miami Tunnel, which is made up of two 4,200-foot-longhighway tunnels that travel under Biscayne Bay, connecting theMacArthur Causeway on Watson Island to the Port of Miami onDodge Island.

Duranar XL coating—specied by Arquitectonica, the Miami-

based architectural rm that designed the tunnels—is a three-part coating system consisting of a urethane primer coat, adecorative color coat and a protective uoropolymer clearcoat.Arquitectonica selected Duranar XL Crystal Blue coating to cov-er the 4,000 metal panels lining both sets of tunnel walls.

Phil Buhr, PPG product manager, coil and building productsgroup, said the selection of Duranar XL coating for a transporta-tion project is unusual but makes sense for the Port of Miamitunnels. “As a high-end coating system, Duranar XL coating ismore commonly specied for monumental architectural proj-ects and storefronts that demand long-term colorfastness, glossretention and chalk resistance,” he said. “All of those perfor-

mance factors and the ease of cleaning made Duranar XL coat-ing an ideal choice for a high-visibility project like this, where thearchitect and project owners were determined to nd a coatingthat would look good even after decades of constant exposureto humidity, salt air and automobile exhaust.”

The solid aluminum plate panels and the hidden lattice-likeframework behind them were fabricated by Metalwërks, Ken-nett Square, Pennsylvania, a product manufacturer and specialtycontractor of architectural metal cladding and ornamental metal. The decorative panels were painted by Precoat Metal, St. Louis, and the lattice work was painted by Spectrum Metal Finishing, Youngstown, Ohio, a member of the PPG CAP CERTIFIED AP-

PLICATOR PROGRAM group. Duracron acrylic extrusion coat-ings by PPG were applied to most of the lattice work to providea durable system for the large-panel mounts. Bouygues CivilWorks Florida (BCWF), Miami, was the design-build contractor.

The Port of Miami Tunnel is a $667 million project that in-corporates three distinct components. In addition to the twinunderwater tunnels, which opened to trafc Aug. 3, the projectincludes improved connections to the Port of Miami roadwaysystem as well as widening and realignment of the MacArthurCauseway Bridge to provide direct access between Miami’s sea-port and the Interstate 95 and Interstate 395 highways. As manyas 16,000 vehicles are expected to travel through the tunnels

    each month.

    “Under the Radar”Showcases BASF’s

Automotive Color TrendsThis year’s BASF Coatings ColorCollection 2014/2015 report, “Under theRadar,” predicts a new level of normal-ity is coming as North America bouncesback from the recession and society em-

braces the unpretentious beauty of the“yover states.”“‘Under the Radar’ helps car compa-

nies predict the mood of a specic regionand provides exterior coating recom-mendations that reect the ideals thatmay become popular two to three yearsout,” said Paul Czornij, technical manag-er for the BASF Color Excellence group.“Noting many political, societal and tech-nological references, we realized that the‘yover states’ and the Rust Belt regions

are becoming increasingly productive inour post-Recession era.”

    Local Color Trends

The ve local theme colors automak-ers may consider in North America formodel year 2018 vehicles are:

    • La Garra Charrua – a light bluecolor representing an unpretentiouslook at mother nature reminiscent ofthe prairie spaces in middle America.

    • Haymaker – a rich orange that

seems dirty, but upon a secondglance, sparkles much like the charmof a rusty factory in one of America’sRust Belt cities.

    • Fitted Green – a soft green exempli -fying the look of fresh mowed grassand a gentle reminder of a simpler, sustainable life.

    • Gray Elevator – a dark silver thathas an imprint of American culturewoven through it as the tone har-kens to a connected world where

people come together.• Take 10,000 – a brownish color with

a lot of sparkle that reminds individ-uals to remember the specialness ofnatural experiences.

The North American local theme fo-

cuses on today’s individuals who are in-novating in the most unlikely areas. Forexample, once a cash-only model, farm-er’s markets are now offering credit cardcapabilities. The “cottage industry” is an -other example as individuals are harken-ing back to a simpler time and developinglow-key solutions that advance societythrough modest, yet sustainable models.

“The colors we’ve chosen will high-light a car‘s beauty and create a strongcolor memory while reecting both the

driver’s desires and the North Americanconsciousness,” said Czornij.

    Global Color Trends

“Under the Radar” also presents 60other colors representing worldwide au-tomotive color trends pulling expertisefrom studios in North America, Asia-Pacic and Europe. Through intensivecollaboration, the teams provide auto-motive customers with global trends andregional differences in the world of color.

The global theme of the latest colortrend forecast, “Under the Radar”, indi-cates a budding trend – people aroundthe world will appreciate uniqueness andsee their individual thinking and actionsincreasingly impactful in society. Thechoices of automotive colors will reectan increased consumer demand for differ-entiation and individuality. Bright colorsas well as warm-inuenced colors in newmetal effects will enrich the color portfo-lio of the cars of tomorrow.

PPG Aerospace Coatings Help Jetstar Celebrate 10th Birthday with Special LiveryOrange can be an unforgiving color, even with aircraft coatings. But a basecoat-clearcoat system by PPG Industries’ aerospacebusiness selected by Jetstar for its 10th-anniversary livery gavethe airline reason to celebrate with an Airbus A320 aircraft paint-ed orange, with white and black lettering and a white star, thatshould keep its good looks for years to come.

The airline chose DESOTHANE HD/CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat system by PPG Aerospace because the superior colorcoverage of the basecoat and high-gloss clear topcoat affordedattractive aesthetics, faster process time and weight savings for

related reduced fuel costs.David Hall, Jetstar Australia and New Zealand chief execu-tive ofcer, said the aircraft’s bright orange livery had been wel-comed by customers and team members.

“The aircraft will be a very familiar sight at ports across thenetwork, and I know our engineering team are delighted withthe result,” Hall said.

According to Rich Wilkinson, sales manager at the PPG Aero-space application support center (ASC) in Tullamarine, Victoria,Australia, the basecoat-clearcoat system helped overcome thechallenge associated with the orange color.

“Orange is a color that does not normally hide well, so ad-

ditional coats of paint are usually applied to achieve a good n-ish, which adds time to the repaint and weight to the aircraft,”Wilkinson said. “But compared with traditional coatings, DES-OTHANE HD/CA 9008 basecoats are heavily pigmented andhave great opacity, so much less paint needs to be applied, re-sulting in a signicant weight saving and, therefore, lower fuelcosts for Jetstar. DESOTHANE HD/CA 9008 basecoats also dryin about two hours, which is four times faster than most high-solids paints, so the aircraft was returned to service a few daysearlier than normal.”

DESOTHANE HD/CA 9000 series basecoats are designed toprovide color in one coat, and one coat of white and one coat of

black were applied to the aircraft. However, Wilkinson advised

application of a second orange coating to achieve the colorsaturation Jetstar desired.DESOTHANE HD/CA 9008 clearcoat was applied over the

orange, white and black basecoat colors to give the aircraft ahigh-gloss shine. It provides extended service life, improvedbuffability and a smoother surface that is easier to clean.

Despite extreme application conditions of 30 C (86 F) and 80percent relative humidity, DESOTHANE HD/CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat performed well, according to Doug McDougal, Jetstarmaintenance, repair and overhaul manager, South East Asia.Wilkinson said the PPG Aerospace ASC in Singapore providedtechnical support during the repainting, which was done by ST

Aerospace Engineering, a Singapore-based airframe mainte-nance, repair and overhaul subsidiary of ST Aerospace.“Painters enjoy using this clearcoat because its application

properties remain consistent, even in hot and humid condi-tions like those in Singapore, where this aircraft was painted,”Wilkinson said. “It hangs well so it does not have a tendencyto run or sag easily. And because DESOTHANE HD/CA 9008clearcoat is resistant to degradation by UV light that causescolors and gloss levels to fade, Jetstar has an aircraft that willlook fantastic for many more birthdays to come.” The topcoatwas removed for repainting, and the aircraft was treated withP99 etch primer and reprimed with chromate-free PAC33CF

    primer by PPG Aerospace.

The four projects that theAkzoNobel Peace Fund andKidsRights will consequentlybe supporting, are initiatives to

foster education in four different parts

of Pakistan - Khpal Kor Foundation,Roots for Equity/Sojhla for socialchange, the Primary Education Project, and Children First.

Khpal Kor Foundation is an organi-zation that focuses on the education ofvulnerable children and the promotionof children’s rights in the Swat District, where Malala grew up.

The Primary Education Project (PEP)puts the emphasis on education for girlsand education for everyone, without dis-

crimination. Teacher training is also atthe core of several programs. The organi-zation concentrates wholly on the SindhProvince in Pakistan, where educationfalls short in many cases, particularly inthe remote and poor areas.

Roots for Equity and Sojhla arejointly implementing the Ilm Mera Haql(Education is My Right) project. Thisproject aims to increase awareness aboutgirls’ right to education, with a focus onthe education of disadvantaged children

in Pakistan’s three large religious commu-nities (Hindu, Christian and Muslim).Children First operates in the Layyah

District and Punjab Province, wheremany children work in the cotton in-dustry. Aside from the scarcity of goodschools, this is considered to be the mostimportant reason why children do not goto school. It is possible to break out ofthis vicious circle by providing education.Three education and development centerswill be set up where girls can learn.

“Education for young people is es-sential, for their own development andfor the development of society as awhole,” said Marten Booisma, mem-ber of the Executive Committee withresponsibility for AkzoNobel’s hu-man resources and organizational de-velopment. “Without education thereis no innovation and no progress. We are proud to support this initia-tive through the AkzoNobel PeaceFund together with our partner the

KidsRights Foundation. Education isone of the most important pillars of

our Human Cities initiative, throughwhich we want to improve communi-ties worldwide.”

Marc Dullaert, chairman and found-er of the Dutch KidsRights Foundation,

says, “KidsRights is very pleased aboutAkzoNobel’s involvement with theChildren’s Peace Prize. Thanks to thiscontribution KidsRights can supporteven more vulnerable children throughlocal partners.”

Every year the KidsRights Foundationorganizes the award of the InternationalChildren’s Peace Prize. The prize is pre-sented to a child for his or her specialdedication to children’s rights world-wide. This November the International

Children’s Peace Prize will be awardedfor the tenth time

Glenn T. Miner, PPG director of con-struction, at glass, said the program

was developed to leverage PPG’s exten-sive experience in managing multifac-eted glass construction projects alongwith the quality fabrication capabilitiesof PPG/CFP members. “Emerging trendssuch as building information modeling, design assist and off-site fabrication arecompressing construction cycles whilecurrent architectural design themes arecreating extremely complex exteriorbuilding facades,” he explained. “Thosemarket drivers, combined with the fore-

cast growth in glass demand over thenext ve years, will signicantly increasedelivery and installation pressures onour supply chain partners.”

While the current PPG demand man-agement system effectively supplies PPG/ CFP customers with the vast majority oftheir typical glass requirements, the PPGConcierge Program service is designed toaddress the supply needs of larger projectsthat involve atypical glass congurations,non-standard glass components, acceler-

ated delivery schedules, advanced qual-ity specications or notably high-prolebuildings. Projects managed through thePPG Concierge Program service will re-ceive a dedicated project manager, pri-ority inventory, scheduling of advancedglass production and supply chain logis-tics management.

HMG Paints Gets Radio-Active with Ectoplasm Green

With hundreds of colors created on a daily basis nding a mem-orable and relevant name for a paint color can be a chore and

result in some unique and bizarre names. HMG Paints Ltd. ofManchester, UK has more than 150,000 colors in its archive sowhen it came to naming a new Green developed by their Ad-vanced Color Styling team they enlisted the help of local radiostation XFM Manchester and their listeners.

The radio station presenters Tim Cocker and Jim Salvesonhad discussed paint names during a show after their own colordilemmas. The breakfast show hosts were enthusiastic to get in-volved naming the new color and getting their listeners involvedwhen offered the opportunity by HMG.

As usual the XFM Manchester listeners were full of fantasticsuggestions submitted via Facebook, Twitter and SMS. Some

of the leading suggestions had a musical theme including, RedHot Chilli Peppers’ Lukewarm Jalapeño, Radio(active) along withsome more unique names like Chippy Tea Pea, XF-Phlegm andNuclear Pesto. Eventually Ectoplasm was chosen as the winningname inspired by the 1984 blockbuster Ghostbusters.

“Tim, Jim and the XFM listeners have done a cracking joband had a tough job to choose the name. XFM Ectoplasm willnow be added to our Color Database, and will be featured inour new Signature Finish range,” said Paddy Dyson HMG Paintsmarketing manager. “With an overwhelming amount of colourname suggestions we could easily launch a 50 Shades of Greenrange. Our paints have been used on everything from vehicles

and buildings to movie sets and even been to outer space so it

will be interesting to see where XFM Ectoplasm ends up.”The color will be available direct from HMG Paints’ Manches-

ter shop and across the UK from HMG Paints distribution net-work thanks to the innovative UNIT Lite tinting system and willbe offered across multiple systems.

XFM Ectoplasm, HMG Library Code 32054, is available in thelatest database update to HMG Paints’ innovative color soft-ware ColourBase. AkzoNobel Creates First

Fully Compostable andReyclable Paper CupThanks to the company’s new pioneer-ing coatings technology EvCote WaterBarrier 3000 – which itself is made fromplant-based oils and recycled PET bot-tles – restaurants can now select a moresustainable paper cup to serve their colddrinks in. These cups don’t require anymodication in the current recycle streamor special handling and are fully com-postable and recyclable.

“This is an industry-changing inno-vation which could have a signicantimpact in terms of providing economicand environmental benets along thevalue chain. The new coatings technol-ogy will help restaurant owners and cupproducers to reduce their waste,” saidConrad Keijzer, AkzoNobel’s ExecutiveCommittee member responsible forPerformance Coatings.

“There has already been strong inter-est in our product and we expect it to

prompt a major transformation in papercup production, much like the move fromwax to the current Polyethylene processaround 40 years ago,” added AB Ghosh, managing director, Industrial Coatings.

Roughly 200 billion paper cups areused around the world every year, butnone of those currently in use can be recy-cled without incurring prohibitive costs orgreatly diminishing the quality of the pa-per ber. That makes this new technologyremarkable, because when paper coated

with EvCote is recycled, the quality of thepaper ber remains intact – which meansthe paper can be reused in the productionof other paper products. In some cases, due to the bers being strengthened by thecoating, paper produced from the wastecan even achieve higher strength than theoriginal, uncoated paper.

An additional advantage is that it en-ables paper mills to recapture 100 percentof the paper waste from the productionprocess that is currently sent to land-

ll, resulting in signicant nancial sav-ings. The amount of paper waste in the

production process is so vast that it couldbe used to completely wrap the EmpireState Building 6300 times.

Made of up to 95 percent sustainableor renewable content, EvCote barrier

coatings protect paper surfaces againstwater, grease and moisture. They can beused in numerous applications, includ-ing corrugated packaging, folding cartonboard, beverage carrier board and foodservice packaging.
