The Alice Chamber of Commerce is holding its first Winter Golf

Classic on Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Alice Country Club.

“This is the first time we are trying a winter golf tourney, but look forward to great success much like the summer tourney already in place,” Execu-tive Director Juan Navejar said. “This will be a great tournament with a chance to win some nice prizes.”

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. in the Club House. Shotgun Start is at 8:15 a.m. with a three-per-son scramble – “A” Player Handicap 0-9; “B” Player 10-19 and “C” Player 20 & Over.

“We are looking for-ward to a great turnout for our winter golf tourney,” Navejar said. “This year we decided to have two tournaments, the summer at the Alice Municipal Golf Course and the winter at the Alice Country Club to

provide our players two great courses locally.”

Players have a chance to win an automobile by making a hole-in-one on the 18th hole. Other hole-in-one chances have players vying for Premium Golf Equipment, Premium Electronic Packages and a choice of airline tickets or

a cruise for two.Entry fee is $195 per

team or $65 per player and includes green fee, cart and lunch.

“Our tournaments are cash payouts that are determined by the number of participants. Aside from the cash prizes, we have a raffle with some great

items that include putters, drivers, caps, golf shoe bags and much more,” Navejar said. “We will also sell mulligans the day of the tournament.”

Registration forms are available at the Alice Chamber of Commerce, 361-664-3454.

It may be chilly, but Gardens still beautiful

One of the benefits of liv-ing in South Texas in the wintertime is

the mild weather, which makes it possible for the South Texas Botanical Gar-dens and Nature Center to be beautiful year-round.

Orchid lovers should reserve a spot in their schedule at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of every month for the ongoing free chat and learn Orchid monthly class series. The Botanical Gardens Orchid Curator Sam Jones leads the class

in the Education Station classroom for orchid lovers and growers at all levels - from the novice to the experienced grower. With topics ranging from the different types of orchids to culturing techniques, orchid growers old and new will be sure to find information they can use. Orchids are also for sale at most meetings to help expand one’s collection.

The Gardens are also hosting a winter lecture series from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 16. The series will

continue through Febru-ary and is free to STBG members. The class fee is included in the general ad-missions fee for all others. Reservations are not neces-sary for this series, which will cover topics relating to the unique environment of South Texas. The winter lecture series is expected to be of interest to Winter Texans and other travelers as well as Coastal Bend residents.

The Gardens also feature a number of fixed exhibits, among which is the recently-established 2600-foot Butterfly House housing both native and migratory butterflies; the 2000-plant Don Larkin Memorial Orchid Green-house with one of the most diverse public collections in the Southwest bloom-ing almost year-round; and the Anderson Bro-meliad Conservatory, which opened in 2009. It is a huge collection estab-lished by internationally-recognized collectors and growers Nelwyn and the late John Anderson. They collected some 800-plus varieties around the world, and their collection is featured here.

Other features of the facility are the Rose Gar-den with 300 rose bushes, the Wetland Awareness Boardwalk and gardens designed both to attract hummingbirds and but-terflies as well as work within the semi-arid South Texas Climate.

All these attractions and more await the visitor to the South Texas Botanical Gardens. The gardens are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Admission is $7 per adult age 13 to 59; seniors (60+),

military and students with I.D. are $6, children ages 4 to 12 are $3 and children from newborn to age 2 are free. Individual children under age 5 are admit-ted free with a parent or guardian paying admis-sion. Parking is free with picnic sites available and the facility is wheelchair accessible. “Control-lable and Friendly Pets on leashes ONLY!”

The 17th an-nual Whooping Crane Festival will be Feb. 21 through 24 in

Port Aransas. This festival is held every year to cel-ebrate the resurgence of the endangered Whooping Crane.

At one time, these majes-tic birds were on the verge of extinction - with only 15 left in the entire world. All of the birds currently in ex-istence are descended from that one small flock which wintered in the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge near Port Aransas.

Concentrated conserva-

tion efforts in both Canada and the United States have aided in the recovery of this still-fragile species. An estimated 245 were spot-ted at the refuge in January 2012, with an unknown total of birds also spotted in an additional five Texas counties and other states. According to whooping-crane.com, the official Web site of the Whooping Crane Conservation Association, the current population of “Whoopers” is believed to be 588 birds - both wild and in captivity.

The whooping crane is the tallest bird in North America, standing at 5 feet

with a wingspan of as large as 7 feet from tip to tip. Baby birds are born with buff-brown down, which is replaced by cinnamon-brown feathers at about 40 days of age. It is not until they are about a year old that the characteris-tic white adult plumage emerges. Whooping Cranes mate for life.

The festival recognizes not only its “keynote” bird, but also the diverse and numerous populations of other species which make their winter home in South Texas. Birding experts from across the country make their way to the small

coastal town to lend their expertise and share their knowledge with festival participants.

This year’s tours and workshops will include a continental breakfast seminar with noted orni-thologist and co-founder of the International Crane Foundation Dr. George Archibald, followed by a boat trip to view the crane on Feb. 22 and 23; a special seminar and field trip with birding author, guide and educator Gene Blacklock of the Coastal Bend Audo-bon Society Inc. to learn about bird identification and view the shore birds in

their native habitat; photog-raphy field trips and much more.

With workshops, speak-ers, a trade show, tours, birdwatching, field trips and stargazing, nature lovers of all kinds will find something to whet their ap-petites for beauty.

Tours do fill up quickly, so it is recommended to register well in advance. Please visit www.whoop-ingcranefestival.org, or call 800-45-COAST or (361) 749-5919 for more information on scheduling or registra-tion.

Located on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, the Connor museum was started by

the school’s first history profes-sor, John Edwin Connor, who began his historical collection in 1925.

Four years later in 1929, the John E. Connor Museum was or-ganized and since 1976 has been located in TAMUK’s Loftin Hall (the university’s original din-ing hall), which setting evokes

memories of Spanish Missions in the region and offers a good set-ting for the collections inside.

The museum is in three different major divisions that include artifacts, archives, and natural history - a record of the prehistory, history and natural history of South Texas.

These collections include more than 900 branding irons, a multigenerational apparel and textile collection with items ranging from hand-sewn

corset covers to miniskirts, and a collection of pre-Columbian pottery, ceramics, farm tools, machinery and effigies.

There are also early oil-field tools and scale models of refineries. Some 400 weapons

and 50,000 Indian artifacts are included in the collection.

The museum’s collections of South Texas biological speci-mens were combined in 1981 with those of the university’s biology department.

Stage Door Canteen

The USS LEXING-TON arrived at Corpus Christi beach in 1992 as a result of active

fundraising and strong community support, and the world’s oldest aircraft carrier has since served as a naval aviation museum, educational facility and popular area tourist attrac-tion. “The Blue Ghost” has remained self-sufficient, never receiving funds from government agencies. The revenue that keeps this national treasure open has come solely from grants, donations, admissions, Ship’s Store sales, special events, and the youth over-night program.

In addition to the above, the Museum holds an an-nual fundraiser – the Stage Door Canteen - held each February to commemo-rate the anniversary of the ship’s commissioning on

February 17, 1943 and the Pearl Harbor Day Memo-rial Service.

This year’s event is on Feb. 15. Dance to the USS Lexington Big Band at this event that recalls the can-teen shows of WWII. Call 361-888-4873, ext. 307 for more details.

The USS LEXINGTON, CV-16, is a World War II-vintage Essex Class aircraft carrier. Commissioned in 1943, she served the United States longer and set more records than any other Essex Class carrier in the history of naval aviation.

The ship was the old-est working carrier in the United States Navy when decommissioned in 1991. An Essex-class carrier, LEX-INGTON was originally

named the USS CABOT. During World War II, final construction was being completed at Massachu-setts’ Fore River Shipyard when word was received that the original carrier named USS LEXINGTON, CV-2, had been sunk in the Coral Sea. The new car-rier’s name was changed to LEXINGTON.
