karen, her two children and her husband are a one-income family. Karen’s husband

earns enough money to pay rent, but not enough to save for a home. With little money left for groceries and utilities, daily life for Karen’s family is a struggle.

Despite their best efforts, financial independence doesn’t seem within the family’s grasp.

For many, living paycheck to paycheck is a reality. But with help from The United Way of Greater Houston, thousands of low-income families are learning to become financially stable.

“Helping a family achieve self-sufficiency and long-term financial independence can change that family’s trajectory for generations,” said Ana Babin, president. United Way is one of 13 Combined Municipal Campaign federations and among more than 700 charities in the annual city employee charity giving drive.

“We provide a social service safety net for our community and invest in key initiatives like

education and family financial stability,” Babin said.

Initiatives like THRIVE, which give families access to job training, free income tax preparation, financial education, matched savings programs and low-interest loans.

“Last year, THRIVE helped put more than 52,000 families on the path to financial stability,” Babin said.

Last year, the United Way Reading Together program helped more than 100 students improve their reading skills.

Giving back can cause a ripple effect. You may think that your donation is a drop in the bucket, but it has far-reaching power. When you give, you are changing a life and creating a new future. Together, we have raised millions of dollars over the years and the

ripple effect from those dollars is boundless. Let’s keep it going. If every employee gave as little as $2 per paycheck, we could top $1 million this year. That’s about the cost of a bottle of soda or cup of coffee every two weeks. But for someone in need, it’s potentially life changing. The city strives to provide assistance for our residents, but there are

unmet needs that fall outside the city’s numerous programs. That $1 million dollars would go a long way toward feeding the

hungry, giving the homeless a place to sleep, helping someone who is unemployed attain new job skills, giving aid to families in need, finding homes for abandoned pets and generally leaving Houston a better place today and in the future. Join me in taking part in this year’s campaign. Let’s change lives and

launch futures!

Want to know how a charity spends its money but are afraid to ask? Don’t be.

Donors care about the community they live in that’s why they participate in the CMC. So it only makes sense that they also want to know how their money will be spent.

Most agencies post financial information for donors on their websites. A list of CMC charities with links to their sites can be found at www.houstoncmc.org.

Since 1991, city employees have contributed more than $2.6 million to the United Way, helping to provide life-changing services to local families, children and veterans.

This year, the CMC is celebrating its Changing Lives and Launching Futures campaign by recognizing CMC charities that have helped those in need for more than a decade.

The greening of HoustonHow do you care for 50,000 acres

of green park space? You keep it beautiful.Keep Houston Beautiful,

a nonprofit that empowers communities to preserve green spaces, has helped beautify Houston’s trails, parks and communities for 35 years.

A CMC organization since 1999, KHB was created in 1979 as The Houston Clean City Commission d.b.a. Keep Houston Beautiful.

“Our goal is to educate and engage individuals to create clean and beautiful public places,” said Robin Blut, executive director.

“We work with community groups, individuals, civic groups, churches, nonprofits and businesses,” said program director Emily Barlow.

Barlow, who coordinates the

logistics of service projects, believes preservation is key for Houston.

“We have a lot of green space compared to other urban areas of our size,” Barlow said.

With warehouse space donated to KHB by the city’s Solid Waste Management Department, employee donations help buy the tools used for projects, such as lawnmowers, rakes and shovels.

“It’s how we do what we do,” Barlow said.

“We provide the right tools and resources to guide people’s understanding and actions to reduce waste, increase recycling and protect the natural areas of our communities,” Blut said.

Through its weekly beautification and cleanups, KHB is changing the way people think about Houston’s green spaces.

So far in 2014, KHB volunteers

removed more than 800,000 pounds of trash from Houston neighborhoods and public spaces, mowed more than 1,000 overgrown vacant lots, beautified 52 parks and planted more than 5,000 trees and shrubs.

“It affects everyone,” said Barlow of preserving Houston’s green spaces.

A community in needEleanor Munger’s heart was big.

And more than 20 years later, the CMC is ensuring the continuation of Munger’s charity work benefitting those in need.

“She saw the needs of the community,” said Nora Hall, grant writer for Bering Omega Community Services, a CMC charity that offers

essential life services to low-income people living with HIV/AIDS. “Many of these people were dying alone in the street.”

In 1986, Munger, a retired schoolteacher and hospital volunteer, established Omega House, a residential hospice for terminally ill HIV/AIDS patients.

“The disease was very misunderstood and stigmatized in the 80s,” Hall said. “Hospitals would turn them away. She got initial funding from her church and opened up a house in Montrose.”

And what started as a residential hospice grew to include a dental clinic, day treatment and housing assistance programs.

In 1997 when Bering Omega joined the CMC, it was one of the few local charities to offer hospice to low-income terminally ill HIV/AIDS patients in Houston.

Two years later, the four core programs united under Bering Omega Community Services.

“A lot of people think they have HIV managed,” Hall said. “Without our services, many of these people would suffer from depression, isolation and other health needs.”

Bering Omega’s day treatment program provides patients with breakfast, lunch, snacks and medication management.

“This is their main food source,” she said.

More than 20,000 people in Houston live with HIV, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The majority are black males.

“They’re getting medication and seeing their doctor,” Hall said. “But these things can be really expensive. Some have to choose between, food, rent or staying on meds.”

Lifetime costs for HIV per person can add up to $600,000, according to the Journal of Medical Care.

“Although Bering Omega receives government grants, we’re limited on what money can be spent on,” Hall said. “That’s where private funders like the CMC come in.”

For the past 18 years, generous employee donations have helped patients with their housing and transportation needs.

“One of the most important things about being a client of Bering Omega is that you have to keep in touch with your primary care doctor,” she said.

“If you’re in care, you’re taking your meds, then the likelihood of spreading the disease is greatly diminished,” she said.

“This is a place they can come, and they are not going to feel any

stigma or ignorance,” Hall, said. For more than 20 years, supportive

employees have donated more than 10 millon, to help feed and cloth needy families, support the medically underserved, and establish educational programs for youth.

Let’s commit to changing the lives and launching the futures of those in need for many years to come.
