– as the head of department of Paediatric Surgery, Deputy Director and Medical
Superintendent. Now as the director, I look forward to lead CMC with enthusiasm and
compassion. My contemporaries between 1984 and 1989 will know me personally as a
fellow hostel mate and college mate. Others will know me as a student or as a teacher.
My wife, Dr Kavita Mandrelle batch of 1985, is continuing to serve the hospital with me. She
joined the department of OBGY in 1993, completed DGO and MD at CMC Ludhiana and
thereafter did fellowship in Reproductive Medicine at
CMC, Vellore. She is now a Professor in the department
of OBGY. We have two sons, Dr.Sahir Bhatti who is now
completing his service agreement at Mission hospital,
Ferozepur and Vaibhav who is currently in 12th grade.
Greetings from us to all out there who love and care for
our alma mater. You are the ambassador of CMC to the
wider world outside. My salutations to you for the honour
and reputation you bring to CMC through your work and
life. It inspires us all when we hear you during the
reunion and founder‟s day celebrations. We feel proud to
belong to the same fraternity, who excel equally well in
academics, clinical medicine, research and social causes
within and out of India.
We will be celebrating CMC‟s 125 years of faithful service next year. It is the selfless service
by the doctors, nurses, paramedics and staff that has led to the institution‟s great reputation.
In the coming years, we do not want to simply „exist‟. Instead, the institution should reach
the pinnacle of its‟s glory by making a positive impact in an individual‟s life, whom we serve
by healing or teaching. CMC needs to become the “ First Choice” for patients, students,
faculty, researchers and the Establishment. As we face present and future challenges, we
need to work together to uphold CMC as a premier institution of medical care that is rooted
in Christ‟s teaching and benevolence.
I believe ours is the most vibrant, robust, resourceful and fun loving alumni body than
anywhere else in the world. I would like to praise the multiple roles played by you in the
wider society and thank you for the amazing support you have extended to the alma mater.
In the coming days, let us work at making this association between the Alumni and CMC
stronger. Let us discover newer ways in which there is greater engagement and a richer
interaction between the Alumni and CMC. Collaborative research, capacity building,
infrastructure development and human resource development.
May our bonds grow stronger as we join our hearts to take our Alma mater to a greater and
grander future.
I seek your help, ideas, suggestions, prayers and support at all times. Please email me at
[email protected] and [email protected]
With sincere regards

From the Alumni President Dear Friends,
It gives me immense pleasure to write in the first issue of monthly newsletter update called as
Alumni Express Connect. I am sure this new publication will help our entire
Alumni body to stay connected to their Alma Mater in a more frequent
manner. We are in the process of updating our Alumni directory with
email ids of all members so that no one is missed while we are trying to
connect with our vastly spread out global CMC Alumni. The present office
bearers of Alumni Association were elected on 24th March 2018 for a period
of three years. The previous Alumni Association team under the leadership of
Dr. Subhash Singla has created a very good platform for us to carry forward and have set
high standards. We hope we can continue the good work in a similar fashion. It is really
encouraging to have very enthusiastic members in the team as we plan the celebrations next
year as CMC‟s completes 125 years of excellence in patient care and medical education. We
are also going to celebrate Reunion of Batch of 1969 and 1988 on coming Founder‟s day on
24 March 2019.
I hope that this publication will bring us all together and „Connect‟ the CMC Global Alumni.
Looking forward to suggestions and feedback. The Alumni association can be contacted at [email protected] Dr. Ajay Kumar „95

Professor of Medical Education was recently awarded Master‟s
degree “Masters in Health Profession Education (MHPE)” with
„Merit‟ by Keele University, UK. Dr. Badyal informed that this is
a very prestigious and internationally renowned degree in medical
education. The selection process
is very competitive and even
after selection the success rate is
below 50%. The whole course
is designed over various modules
with mandatory assignment and a
contact session at Keele University. The course is very rigorous and demands a lot of
academic input and successful completion of dissertation. Only approx. 10 faculty from India
has been awarded MHPE. So far he added that this qualification will be a value addition in
the progress of Department of Medical Education, CMC, Ludhiana.
Madam Dr Madhumita Mukherjee’s Farewell May 18
th 2018 marked the last working day for one of CMC‟s most beloved and amazing
teachers – Dr Madhumita Mukherjee. She had been teaching Anatomy to CMCites since
1982.
The Farewell function was witness to testimonials by representatives from across almost all
the batches that have been taught by her – including ones
from overseas. The auditorium was soon full and
overflown with the Principal, Associate Director, the
Medical Superintendant, senior faculty and students.
The Principal Dr Jeyraj Pandian (MD‟95)in his opening
statement mentioned how important the role of a teacher is
in the life of a student and that for a medical student,‟

her experiences and mentioned that it was an honor to have been associated with her. She
also projected class photos with the Anatomy department ,of all the batches since Dr
Madhumita joined CMC. Some of the moments from the Department farewell were also
projected. . Lydia Solomon „98, Sangeetha Mohan „92, Tapasya Dhar & M. Joseph John „91,
Vikas Loomba „87, Sunil Casabianca , „95, currently residing in Australia, Chris Baby „05,
Naveen Kakkar„87, Inderpreet Sohi „87 paid rich tribute to her teaching skills and
impeachable style. Dhruv Ghosh „90 , the associate director, recounted a few anecdotes from
his time and read out a few messages from friends around the world. News of her retirement
prompted a strong sense of nostalgia from her students outside the institution and abroad in
the form of whatsapp messages and emails. Some of these responses were projected on the
screen as well.
A few notable ones are as follows –
„I found Madhumita ma‟am strict but fair...which is all you want for a start from teachers.
“,Thank you for being my teacher. Although I was too silly and stubborn to take advantage of
your immense knowledge of the subject and your deep desire to see your students excel, I
admired your passion and fairness. As I‟ve grown older, I recognise how frustrating it would
have been to teach a student like me. Rest assured ma‟am, your efforts were not in vain as I
constantly strive now to improve as a professional, a trait that I believe you had a significant
part in imparting on me. “ “„I really don‟t know how to score a teacher but she was and is
always going to live as a really really good memory, someone who had the charm, the poise,
the wit, the enigma of being Ma‟am. Madhumita was wonderful. Wishing her a wonderful life
ahead...may the almighty keep blessing CMC with some wonderful teachers and doctors as
always.... Que Dieu vous bénisse tous‟
Madhumita Ma‟am responded to all the messages and wishes with grace and poise. She
thanked the students, the faculty and the administration for all her days in CMC. She was
presented with a souvenir from the administration, following which the entire audience
joined together for a group photograph.

ALUMNUS IN FOCUS
SHARAD PHILLIP 2005 In a world where races are assumed to be won by the
swiftest and battle to the strongest, the principle of "The
Christian Paradox" confounds worldly wisdom rendering it
foolishness. Sharad Philip is a perfect exemplification of the
above principle.
Right from the advent of his medical career in 2005, this
Delhi based Malayalee, kept proving his uniqueness. Be it
in organising various college level activities, academic
hurdles, class trips, or even just being a good listener,
Sharad would excel in any event he set his mind upon.
Though he suffered from retinitis pigmentosa ( a rare
congenital progressive visual disability), his faith in Christ enabled him to face life head on,
with tremendous courage and a fearless spirit - allowing him to live every moment to the
fullest. His leadership capabilities reflected in him being the class representative during for
MBBS batch 2005.
In 2007 , 2 years into his MBBS course Sharad‟s vision declined to a level that made it
difficult to read and write for paper exams or use the computers as others did . In that context
when he gave the first ever NEET exam for PG selection which was computer based, Sharad
ended up unable to read the questions or answers. The paper got auto submitted and when
the results came his marks were for the 27th percentile! A humorous tribute to the selection
system .
The MCI considered only the locomotor impairments of lower limbs not exceeding 70% as a
disability tenable with medical education or practice . There seemed to be no way out for him
to pursue his career . This is when he stumbled upon the NIMHANS prospectus that allowed
for candidates with 40 to 70% disability to appear for the examination . The academic section
in the spirit of reasonable accommodation permitted the services of a scribe . The selection
was then processed under the Persons With Disability category and Sharad was able to
pursue post graduate studies in the premier mental health institute in South East Asia .
At that time it seemed like an anomaly. Regulatory bodies had not foreseen situations like
this as they had decided to weed out these cases at the point of entry itself . What they had
not foreseen was someone with a sensory impairment completing graduate studies itself.
In Sharad‟s words, ” God blessed me with some of the most wonderful people in this world as
my peers and seniors. I studied with them. They would revise loudly and I would listen . and
the Gracious Lord would then help me put these answers down in the papers sometimes even
better than those who taught me !!
Without God I am nothing but an insignificant blade of grass. Today I have been brought
through with flying colours completing my post graduation in Psychiatry and being
Private Circulation CMC Alumni Xpress Connect Online Edition
16 | P a g e
numbered amongst the better ones amongst my peers. I am of help to others with disabilities
whether they want to pursue medical education or otherwise.”
To some, this may seem a random coincidence/ chance/ dumb luck, but for those of us who
know Sharad, we have seen too many such random coincidences in his life to call it mere
luck. There were several instances in the above incident where things could have gone off
track.
Romans 8:28 says - All things work for good for those who have been called unto his
purpose- and this has been proven time and time again in Sharad‟s life. I am privileged to be
closely associated with Sharad. To me his life‟s testimony echoes time and again, the
perfection of God‟s absolute glory and strength in his weakness.
