Without the selfless dedication of the volunteer coaches, administrators, committee members – those who stick up their hands to get the job done – the opportunities would just not be there for athletes of every age and ability to train, take part and compete.

Whether looking to improve, find the pathway to compete or just make new friends – becoming part of a club could be one of the best things you ever do

P ERHAPS the more pertinent question should actually be: ‘why shouldn’t you

join an athletics club?’.The benefits of becoming a

member are plentiful after all, regardless of your ability as an athlete.

Club membership, with the coaching and training options that can bring, often instigates big improvements in performance and, more importantly, provides enduring memories, experiences and companionship.

Many of the biggest names in the sport will openly admit their love of athletics was first developed and nurtured at their club, a place where they encountered structured training for the first time and made lifelong friendships.

Being part of the club network of course also opens up access to track and field competition for those looking to pursue that avenue across the disciplines.

The recent National cross country championships in every corner of Great Britain, where tens of thousands of athletes turned out to take part or support, offered

the perfect example of just what a thriving and supportive community exists at club level on these shores.

And don’t forget that the encouragement from team-mates can often be the difference between a good and a great performance, as can the opportunity to compete against those of similar, or even slightly better, ability.

WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN A CLUB?

But it isn’t just those looking to operate at the sharper end who can benefit from becoming a club member. Anyone who’s ever seen a local road race will know that club runners can be found at the front, the back and everywhere in between.

Clubs are certainly not elitist and generally cater for everyone

from the super-competitive to the recreational jogger. There’s no need to fear being left behind.

Also, when it comes to training, and getting out of the door when the wind is howling and the rain is lashing down on a cold night, knowing that there will be a group of like-minded souls willing to join you is a potent force.

Likewise, while most of the population cares little about such matters as pace per mile, long jump technique or perfecting a throw, members of athletics clubs quite patently do, meaning friendships are made and great advice from like-minded individuals can be absorbed.

we purchased the fabric from overseas.”

NOW into its fifth year as an initiative, British Athletics’ Club:Connect campaign has continued

to grow in stature as the national governing body seeks to offer young track talent the opportunity to compete at high profile athletics meetings of local proximity to their club.

Launched at the 2014 Glasgow International Match, Club:Connect is designed to reward and recognise the important work carried out by clubs in the development of an athlete’s career, with girls and boys teams from under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-20 age groups offered the opportunity to compete across 4x200m relays indoors and 4x100m relays outdoors. Each Club:Connect

race sees the victors receive a cheque for £250, with the prize money fed back into their clubs.

Not only a regular fixture at both the indoor and outdoor British Championships, the campaign also showcases clubs on a bigger stage using British Athletics’ major events, including the prestigious Müller Anniversary Games and the Müller Grand Prix Birmingham, both of which are legs on the IAAF Diamond League tour.

THE Emirates Arena played host to the Club:Connect 4x200m relay ahead of the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow on February 25, with some of Scotland’s best young athletes clocking impressive times.

The programme started with Ayr Seaforth AAC pipping Larkhall YMCA Harriers in the under-13 women’s relay after a photo finish, winning in 1:54.53.

In the men’s under-13 relay, a third-leg sprint from Giffnock North AAC A saw them overtake Inverclyde to claim victory by a four seconds in 1:56.04.

Victoria Park City of Glasgow thought they had secured first and second place in the women’s under-15 relay, only to be disqualified for a lane rule violation. This saw Victoria Park’s As take first place in 1:48.81, with Giffnock North promoted into second place.

The men’s under-15s saw a superb performance from Giffnock North seemingly guide them to a comfortable victory, but they were disqualified for running outside their lane.

This promoted Victoria Park City of Glasgow into first place with a time of 1:46.86, edging out Airdrie Harriers A.

Central Athletics Club took first place in the women’s under-17s relay, storming to victory in a time of 1:44.77 seconds. The race for second place was won by Edinburgh AC.

Edinburgh AC rounded off the programme with victory in the men’s under-17s 4x200m with a run of 1:32.91, having been pushed hard all the way by Victoria Park City of Glasgow.
