At gatherings of Eaton Rapids High School alumni, as must be the case with such get·togethers everywheie, tall< is bound to turn to favorite teachers.

One often mentioned as a favori[e ls~Mildred Evans. RetiiCtl fo~ a good many ycacs now, Mrs. E'?ans.ts fondly x:e" memb£red by many who prof~ss to have bee~ ~fraid of her when she was their teacher. · ·

Mrs. Evans bad a manner which told her students that no nonsense wou!d be tolerated. And in this atmosphere, She was able to do a good job of teaching.

Retired from teaching, she continued to serve on the / . board of the local llbrary. Although she will maoh !J.~r [

Sorrteone 11as said thn.c every man is a radical at twenty and a conservatlve at forty. There are exceptions to this generality. Some young people have built-in conservative Ldeas and opposition to ch~nge.

Mildred Evans has retalnea nil through the years of her long and useful Ilfe the practical bellefthat·cbange is a natural condition in the lives of nations as well as in the lives of peopl<l.

This column salutes Mildred Evans as she approaches this seventy-seventh of her birthdays, and we want to re· mind her that entire generations of her students are indebted to her and they send fier every goOd wish for this occasion.

For those wb.o may wish to send personal greetings in addition t0 this publi-c greeting, ·Mts. Evans has a new ad .. dress. She is now in Lansing at 1746 Boston Boulevard, Lansing, Michigan. Every tim'e J see Bob Woods there comes to mind an incident of about thirty years ago. 1 hope that Bob will nqt mind if l share lt with the'Journal readers.

Part of Bob's trucking business included picking up freight at the Michigan Central freight olface and making deliverles to the business places down town.

As I came along pas! the freight office on this one ~ay, there was quite a commotion going on inside a freight car on the siding next to ci1e builcfing. I looked in to see whar was happening. · ,

A huge spool of wire l1ad been shipped In fc/r use in some utility comj>any project and as I looked in the car, John Welli, the freight agent, and two railway brakemen we:e working away, trying to pry the spool of wire up from its side so i~ collld l>e rolled out onto the loadi.ng platform.

At the same time that I teached the see~, Bob Woods drove up with hinruck. Bob watched the three men as they· stru~gled in vain to raise the heavy !odd. · ·

'Step back away from that thing", Bob sugges;ed, The three stepped away. Bob thrust a pry 6ai through the

h~le In the center of ci1e huge spool, threw his weight and his strength against lt, tipped the spool upright in one unaided effort.

lfhis was no/articular surprise to John Wells, who was well acquaihte with Bob Woods, but the two railroad brake~en, well-muscled men themselves, stood looking at Bob in open-mouthed admiration.

Sincer6ly, Winifred Bi:own

Business hasn't been too good today. But in a minute someone will come alol)g for a shine. Johnny will have a dime, bl'ight and inviting, lying in his palm. .

. What's he going to do with that dime? As he sits in the sun, vision's dance in his mind. He could buy candy, ice c1·eam, a new magazine. He could even save it for Sunday School •.• but then what good could a dime do.

Suddenly Johnny 1;emembered a Sunday Schoql lesson, 'Jes us had told how precious was the penny offering of
