COMMODORE’S REPORT Bryan Cox

Well it’s finally arrived! This is my last newsletter report to you as Commodore of your club and I would like to start by expressing my thanks and appreciation to all of you - members and staff - for the support shown me over the last 3 and half years. I hope and believe I leave the position of commodore with the club being in a much healthier condition than when I took the office and in good hands. To my successor I wish all the best for his term "in the chair". Those of you who have been to the club recently will know that our new fence is up and the new entrance will be operational off the road down to the groyne very soon. Of course this will mean some modifications to the parking arrangements which are still to be finalised however as soon as this is done signage will be installed to alleviate any confusion. Having the fence installed will also enable us to create long term storage facilities which will have security cameras recording 24 hours a day together with other forms electronic security devices. This should be available to members within a couple of months so if you are interested and haven't put your name on the list which Hazel is preparing I recommend you do so before we fill all the available spaces . What else has been happening? Firstly something I'm sure will interest you - we have started the process to change our liquor licence from the existing "Club Restricted" licence to a "Club Licence" but what will this mean - for starters we will have much more flexibility as to when we can open, we will be able to sell packaged drinks without opening them and we wont have to get a late licence every time we have a function which goes beyond 11:00 PM. Secondly something thing we would like feedback on - you will notice on ramp #1 we have installed a rail to assist people getting in and out of boats (It's painted yellow) Please let us have your comments before we install anymore. Now one last thing before I sign off. Over the past few months some members have expressed concern, even annoyance, at the increases we have had to make in the annual fees over the last couple of years and I thought it would be appropriate if I explained why these increases have been necessary. Firstly in 2008 the rent for our premises increased from $7000 per annum to $47500 per annum which required an increase in the annual fees of 15.7% just to recoup that cost increase, to this was added the CPI increase for the period to make up the 20%increase charged in January 2009. At the same time we levied the full members $38 (and other classes as per the fee structure) to pay for the back rent of $40498, then in July 2009 ( remember we had the split year in 2009 and you only paid half fees in January 2009) 10% was added to help fund the new jetties which were being installed at that time and then again in 2010 another 10% was added to start rebuilding the financial reserves which had become severely depleted again by the jetties and finally we had a levy of $100 per member to fund various capital works currently being undertaken around the club grounds. Whilst your committee fully understands the impact these increases have had on members they also recognise, as I'm sure the vast majority of members do, that all of the things being done now will bring benefits in the future. One of those benefits I hope will be to allow the existing fees to only be increased by the normal CPI figure over at least the next couple of years. My one disappointment is that the clubhouse roof still leaks - at least 9 years ago we started talking about the urgent need to replace our asbestos roof and much as it pains me I have to admit it still does but we have progressed to the point where we have full plans and specifications for the job (which has grown a bit) and even have finance approved if necessary - all we need is a builder but perhaps even more important than a builder is "suitable weather" and that probably wont be available now till next year. One last thing before I finish - at the AGM (to be held on 17th September) the officeholders for the coming year will be elected. Currently there are 8 nominees for the 6 places available on the general committee these members need your support which you can give by attending the meeting and voting for the people you believe will best manage the club. Again I thank you all for the privilege of being your commodore for the last 3 years and wish all those who follow me Good Luck and Happy Boating

Bryan Cox

Sportfishing Report

Next Competition: The August 2010 competition will be held on Saturday or Sunday 11 & 12 September 2010. For those interested, the fishing hours are from Midnight on Friday to 2 pm on Sunday. The competition will be judged on a points score based on the fish species and the length of the fish taken or released. At least one person from each participating boat needs to attend the official weigh in at 2 pm on the Sunday of the competition. Catch and release sheets need to be provided to the Weigh Master or his representative at that time in order for the scores to count in the competition. Next Fishing Group Meeting: The next Fishing Group Meeting will be held on Monday 20th September 2010 at 7.30 pm at the club. There are no formal application processes for club members – just show up on the day and you are one of us.

...·´¯`·....·´¯`·.><((((º>

The weather looked as though we might be in for another wet day, but luckily the weather man got it wrong and we were able to concentrate on the jobs that had been put aside. The turn up of volunteers was impressive, lots of new faces and eager to get started. George and his crew tackled the dreaded fence into the water. They have managed to get the post near the finger pens and slipway cemented in position. There is still some work to be done on the other post, but that is in progress. Ian and his team worked on the 2 storm drain grids that needed replacing and by midday they had been completed. John quietly worked by himself on replacing the pavers that had been removed, when the patio wall was repaired. Richard did a pretty good job of cleaning up the shed next to the container and giving Ernie a hand in the barbecue area. To make Ernie’s job easier, we have presented him with a mobile trough for cleaning the filters. No more aching backs. Colin and his ute snatched what old tyres he could, out of the water along the beach area. Still a couple to go, but a bit chilly yet for getting wet. Hats off to Cathy and Vera, they certainly know the way to a man’s heart, smoko was greeted with a plate of beautiful pumpkin soup, sandwiches and cake. We always look forward to these breaks and I reckon these girls would never get any complaints. By midday we had achieved most jobs on the list, but don’t despair, we have more coming up. Catch you at the next Busy Bee

Social Up-date

The Quiz night will have been and gone by the time this newsletter is released and I would like to thank all the members who donated something towards the night. If it wasn’t for your support this function wouldn’t be such a success. Unfortunately, due to lack of numbers, the Pizza Sundowner has been cancelled. For all the gourmet beer drinkers why not come along to the Oktoberfest and try some different beers from Germany. Whilst enjoying the beer and music we will be providing German Sausages, Sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and Apple Strudel. Don’t despair if you don’t drink beer we will have the normal drinks that the club provides. So come on everyone come along for a fun few hours. The Children’s Xmas Party is fast approaching, so if your children, grandchildren are attending, please have the form filled out and returned to the club with money before the due date. For members who haven’t attended one of these functions it is truly a fun and tiring day for all... The cost is as follows:- Children 0 – 10 years $25 (receive a present, plus all activities) Children 11 – 15 years $10 (no present, but all the activities) I think you can say we have kept the price quite reasonable. As the AGM is fast approaching I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Social Committee for all their hard work over the last twelve months. Hope to see you all at one or two of the up and coming events.

Dive News Lynsey Carter

The only good thing about this time of the year is that I do not have to write a lengthy report about the last Dive because we didn’t have one. Despite the weeklong 3.0 metre swells and howling winds, George and Colin turned up looking for a dive. I had already decided to write off the dive because I was a sook and the visibility would be non existent – BUT –I did bring my fishing gear and my buddy (wife). A trip to the Five-fathom brought us three magnificent King Georges and a couple of lonely Skippy. Beats’ mowing the lawn doesn’t it? That’s it from me SEA U LYNSEY

Hazel has been pestering me to write a self profile (for quite a long time!) so here it is. LYNSEY CARTER Born in Maylands, December 1941 (yes I feel every year of it!). I spent an active youth riding my bicycle around Maylands, swimming at the Caledonian Ave swimming hole and jumping off the East Street jetty, or watching the Tiger Moths and Chipmunks doing circuits of the Maylands Aerodrome. My maritime activities commenced at an early age of six when my mate and I built a canoe from a flattened sheet of corrugated iron and filled the holes with tar scrapped from the road, and then sank in the middle of a nearby swamp (now they’re called wetlands). We were both relieved when we found out that although we could not see bottom, it only came to our waists. As a teen, my family bought a beach block at Miami (now called Falcon) and as a family built an evolving Beach House. Here, fishing, crabbing, surfing and snorkeling became my life style until I met my future wife at a party. It took no time to discover that Mary’s passion was also aquatic. As a wife she encouraged and helped me to build a 14 foot Hartley bond wood boat which was to last us for some 18 years and took us on many adventures that I would be reluctant to repeat even in our current six meter boat. It was Mary and my daughter Debbie who took Scuba lessons and then convinced me that I could do it too. Whilst launching at the Cockburn Public Ramp, a nice lady approached us and told me that she was the Radio operator of the CPBA and that I should join because the people were much nicer than this impatient crowd. The nice lady was Val Robertson and she gave me the application that started my association with this club back in 1988. Darryl Caddy and myself formed the CPBA dive group the following year. To my surprise, I was elected to the General Committee in 1989 and have served since then continuously and have been rewarded with a life membership, which I value enormously.

Mid-Week Group Lorna Clarke

BIRTHDAYS FOR SEPTEMBER

None in Sept. or October; watch this space in November.

Greetings All,

What a happy gathering of 21 members who enjoyed our mid-week lunch for August. With our friends Delores and Brian being away, d took over the reins and was the “boss” for the day.

She gave apologies for absence from Shirley and Doug M., Doug has the ‘wog’ and didn’t want to pass it on. Cyril had an important appointment to keep (can’t miss them!) while Fred A. is also battling a nasty ‘wog’ - it’s everywhere! - and Keith W. is in hospital. May you all be better by the time this goes to press and back on the “well list’ soon. Rex and Gloria G. will have been off on the 15th August for their well earned holiday. Part of their travels will include catching up with the Chesters in Cork (not in a bottle, in Ireland) who will be there at the same time visiting their daughter who lives there. Will be a fun time for the four of them, to be sure, to be sure.

Robbie welcomed Joan and Bill S. back from their cruise on the “Sun Princess” which was really splendid and according to Bill they were treated like Royalty. I heard a rumour that Joan was known as ‘the one armed bandit’. Why, is there a story there? you will have to ask her. Joe and Eileen Hall have resigned from our Group, it seems the travel bug has really got into them and they have so many places to go and things to do. They will be missed and I’m sure everyone will wish them well for the future.

According to Robbie we are in the season of the doldrums, not a lot happening around the Club at this time of the year, things will brighten up later in the year. Let’s hope the same can be said for our Lotto efforts, we can have a win for a change, no luck this month,....again!

Games Reports.

Euchre: Briefly, the scores were even, one game each for IVAN & BARRY against BILL S. & FRED S. so all deserve big print!

Rummy: A quiet time with the only players being Joan and Lorna , both concentrating on their game. Luck was with Lorna to-day as she won both games, the age of miracles hasn’t passed yet!

Bowls: To-day we had 11 ladies and 4 men. The men were very quiet as they couldn’t compete vocally with that number of women. Marie was very generous in bringing a box of lollies especially for her brown team only, but gave in and shared them with everyone.. Kindness personified! Sue once again was Deanna’s offsider in keeping the teams in order. Santo was heard coaching Hilda as they were both on the Black team.

Andrena and Hilda showed great skills today. Rex played well for the men. Santo was in his usual form bowling well and trying to distract the Brown bowlers.

Final score was BLACK - 9 - with BROWN a way behind on 4. Well done the winners.

Cheers

Lorna.
