A Note for Parents or GuardiansThis booklet is designed for 4-H'ers to use, along with a parent or guardian,
in an experiential learning activity focused on birds. In addition to learning
about birds, 4-H'ers will develop their motor skills and their capacities
for visual discriminatin. They will also gain exposure to such
lifeskills as interpersonal communications, problem-solving, decision-making,
planning and "learning to learn". An accompanying Bird Activity Guide provides
innovative group activities, which supplement the information
in this booklet, and offer additional learning experiences.
In this Mini-Project you will learn:
i Body Parts of a bird
iSome bird habits
iBird names
iWhat birds need to survive

Parent/Child Fun Things to Do‘ Take a walk with a child in the forest and help identify different kinds of birds. Make a list
of those birds.‘ Visit the library or bookstore to find books to help with bird identification.‘ Plan a trip to a zoo or museum to see exotic birds.‘ Spend some time together building a bird feeder or birdhouse.‘ Plan a trip to another location to compare the kinds of birds found there with those in your
community.‘ Write a story or poem about birds.‘ Listen to recordings of songbirds while doing other fun things.‘ Learn to identify at least 10 birds by sight and sound, then, learn to whistle or “mimic” the
song or call of 5 birds.‘ Draw and color pictures of your favorite birds.‘ Collect different things, string, twigs, grass, etc and build a “make believe” bird nest.‘ Count the different birds seen in your yard for one week.‘ Go on a hunt for bird feathers.‘ At snack time, pretend that you are a bird and eat your favorite snack without using your
hands or fingers (wings).‘ Ask at a nature science center or nature museum about bird watching groups to contact
for help with bird identification.‘ Ask someone “What came first the bird or the bird egg?” and have them to explain their
answer. Then talk to that person and explain why you agree or disagree with them.‘ Invite birds to your home or school yard by creating a landscape for attracting them.
Contact your county Extension Center or check at the library for books on easy ways tocreate bird habitats.
‘ Write a short story about some things that you would see if you were a bird flying fromplace to place in your neighborhood.
