LEADER DEVOTIONAL

Anyone who travels by plane on a regular basis knows that airports can be a hub for stress and anxiety, especially when you’re running late, and you’re dragging your kids with you, and your pants are falling down because security needs to check your belt for explosives. In general, airports are easy places to find people in need of help, so during one of my trips I made it a point to make myself available to those people. I prayed that God would show me how I could be a servant to the travelers around me. Then, as I settled into the seat at my gate, I watched with prayerful eyes for ways that I could assist.

What amazes me is that when I’m in a hurry, and I’m being selfish, and I have no inclination to assist anyone but myself, I seem to be surrounded by needy people, but for some reason, as I sat there with watchful eyes, waiting to help at the drop of a hat (I would have literally picked up someone’s hat if they had dropped it), I couldn’t find anyone who needed my help. Amazingly, the airport seemed to be filled with incredibly self-sufficient people. As an introvert who would love nothing more than to live in a world that never required interaction with strangers, it seems odd that I would be discouraged by that, but I was. And as I boarded the plane, I began to lose hope that God would need me for that particular flight. But then I met Andy.

Andy was my seat mate on the plane and Andy was a talker. Again, this would normally have been an introvert’s nightmare, but I wondered if this was in some way how God wanted to use me. As the conversation progressed, I silently prayed that the Holy Spirit would give me the opportunity and courage to share my faith with Andy. And wouldn’t you know it—He did. In a very easy, natural way, I was able to tell Andy the story of how I met Jesus and how He changed my life.

I wish I could tell you that Andy began following Jesus before the plane touched down, but he didn’t (despite the rough landing). Nevertheless, he was very receptive to my story. Moreover, I trust that the efforts of the Holy Spirit are never wasted.

Sharing your faith can be a scary endeavor, especially when you go it alone. But it doesn’t have to be. When you open your eyes to the Spirit’s leading, you might be amazed by how many natural opportunities you have to tell others about the good news of Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the courage and occasion to share your faith with the Andy’s in your life.

7 Steps to Becoming a Master of Memorization

Alright, I’m going to be honest here. I’ve never heard anyone say that memorization is their favorite thing in the world, but great communicators love delivering great messages and part of delivering a great message is knowing what you’re going to say. Think for just a moment about the best speeches or sermons you’ve ever heard. I’ll bet it wasn’t being read to you from a script. One of the reasons it was such a good message is because the pastor or speaker had it committed to memory which allowed them to focus on delivering it in a powerfully impacting way. There’s no way around it, memorization requires some work, but the payoff is huge and there are some things you can do to make it easier. Here’s a quick guide to get you started:

Read the whole lesson first. Before you commit anything to memory, you have to know the big picture. It’s kind of like using plans to build a bird house. Before you make your first cut or start hammering on things, it helps to know what it’s supposed to look like when you’re finished.

Mark up the lesson. Pens and highlighters are your best friends! Underline and highlight key phrases, transition sentences, difficult lines, and anything else you think is worthy. This will create visual handles in the lesson that your brain can grab ahold of.

Chunk it. Your brain has trouble remembering vast amounts of unbroken information, so break the lesson down into smaller chunks. When you memorize, just focus on one chunk at a time and then put them all together at the end. The GO! curriculum helps with this by labeling many of the different chunks for you.

Read and recite. Starting with the first chunk, read the first sentence or two. Then put the lesson down and recite it back from memory. Continue doing this until you reach the end of the chunk. Then return to the top and recite the whole chunk in its entirety.

Focus on the transitions. Often the most difficult parts to remember are the transitions from one “chunk” to the next. Be doubly familiar with your transitions.

Write out trouble spots. If there’s a line or section that keeps giving you trouble, hand write it out. This involves a separate part of your brain and can help with retention.

Recite the lines out loud. It may seem awkward at first, but speaking the lines is tremendously helpful. Practice teaching the lesson out loud in front of an imaginary audience. It’s even better if you can do it in the actual space where the lesson is being taught.

UNIT DESCRIPTIONQuiet on the set—its movie making time! During “Lights, Camera, Action!” the preschoolers will give the performance of a lifetime as they act out scenes from Bible stories about the early church. When shooting wraps up, they’ll have discovered that the church is our supporting cast, but Jesus is the real star of the show!

SET-UP INSTRUCTIONS Ahead of time place your cell phone or video camera somewhere in the preschool room

that is visible to the children from the seating area, but not too obvious. During the storytelling time, the teacher will video record the children as they act out

various “scenes” from the Bible story. Provide the teacher with a video camera or confirm they have a cell phone that records video.

Note: If you are going to use the video for external purposes such as social media, it is a good practice to obtain parental permission first. Otherwise, only use the videos to show to the preschoolers at church.

Optional: After the lesson, consider uploading the videos to a media presentation software like PowerPoint® and play it on a video screen or computer for the children to see the following week.

Create a “Bible Box” and place your storytelling Bible inside. This box will be used every week. See the Resource Folder for details on how to make the “Bible Box.”

If using the non-video options for the Topher segments of the lesson, print the Topher’s Storytime Rules signs and Topher’s Big Idea signs on 8½ x 11 cardstock paper and place in the story time area. See “Getting Started” in the Resource Folder for the printable signs and for more instructions on how to perform the non-video options.

Note: Any media repeated throughout the unit, such as the Topher videos and the title slide, is located in the Lesson 1 Resource Folder only.

WELCOME AND MUSIC

As children enter the story time area, give them a high-energy welcome—smile, wave, give high fives, and tell them you’re glad to see them. For added energy during the transition, play a fun song that the children are familiar with. When the children have all arrived, play one or two upbeat worship songs of your choosing and lead the kids in singing.

Music: play one or two upbeat worship songs

After the songs, help the children sit down by saying the following rhyme with them:

Topher the Gopher 1, 2, 3. (Clap on each number.)Digs a hole right under me. (Make a motion as if digging with a shovel.)Slowly I start sinking down. (Twist your body back and forth, lower and lower to the ground.)Until I’m sitting on the ground. (Sit down on ground or chair.)

BIG IDEA AND BIBLE VERSE

Large Group Leader: Hello everybody—we’re going to have such a fun time today! That’s because its movie-making time! Today, we’re going to make a Bible story movie.

Today’s true Bible story is going to teach us that my church helps me and I help my church. That’s our Big Idea for the day. Let’s say it together. (Repeat Big Idea with children.) My church helps me and I help my church. It’s true! My church helps me and I help my church. In fact, that’s what our memory verse from the Bible tells us. Let me teach it to you.

“Carry one another’s heavy loads (motion with both arms like picking up something heavy). If you do (march in place), you will fulfill (thumbs up) the law of Christ (hold hands out in cross formation).” Galatians 6:2 (extend hands like you’re holding a book).

Let’s do that together. (Repeat Memory Verse with children 2 or 3 times.)

STORY TIME RULES

Wow—nice job! I think you are ready for the Bible story. Before we get started, though, I think we should go over our three story time rules.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! INTRO

(Note: Ahead of time place your cell phone or video camera somewhere in the preschool room that is visible to the children from the seating area, but not too obvious.)

In just a minute, we’re going to make our Bible story movie, but there’s a little bit of a problem. I seem to have misplaced my cell phone (or video camera). I need it to record the movie. Maybe you kids could be my helpers and help me find it. Let’s look for the missing phone through our pretend binoculars. (Cup hands around eyes like binoculars. Walk to an area of the room away from the camera.) Do you see my phone over here? (Children can’t find it.) No. (Walk to two more areas away from the phone, then ask the children if they see it. Finally, walk to an area near the phone.) Do you see my phone over here? (Children find it.) Yes! You did it—you found my phone! Now we can record our Bible story movie. You kids are such great helpers!

Hey—speaking of helpers, today’s true Bible story is about some helpers who helped a man escape from some mean people. If you’re ready to hear that story, wiggle your fingers in the air. (Children wiggle fingers.) Great! First, let’s get our Bible out of the super-duper Bible box. (Move to the Bible Box.) I need your help getting the Bible out, though. We need to say our special Bible words together. Repeat these special words after me: It’s true, it’s true, the Bible is true!

(Repeat the words with the children, then turn on the Bible Box light so that the Bible is revealed. Optional: play the Bible Box sound effect when you turn the light on.)

Sound: (optional) play the “Bible Box” sound effect

(After the Bible is revealed, open the box and take it out. Hold the open Bible in front of you.)

Slide: show the “Saul’s Great Basket Escape” slide

BIG BIBLE STORY—SAUL’S GREAT BASKET ESCAPE

(Note: Use a cell phone or video camera to record the children as they perform the various short Bible “scenes.” For each scene, show the children what to do first, them have them do it. When the lesson is over, consider showing the scenes to the children.)

Are you ready to make our Bible movie? (Children respond.) Great! I’ll tell you what to do. Then, when I say, “Lights, camera, action!” you do it.

In the Bible, in the Book of Acts, there was a man named Saul. At first, Saul didn’t like people who followed Jesus. If he found a Christian, he would arrest them and take them to jail. When I say, “Action!” I want you to make an angry face like Saul, then point and say, “You’re under arrest!” Lights, camera, action! (Press record while children perform.) Cut! Nice work!

But Saul didn’t stay mean. One day, Jesus appeared to Saul in a bright light. After that, Saul loved and followed Jesus. Now, instead of arresting Christians, Saul became a Christian. He traveled all over town telling everyone that Jesus is the Son of God. When I say, “Action!” I want you to march in place like you’re Saul and say, “Jesus is the Son of God.” Lights, camera, action! (Press record while children perform.) Cut! That was wonderful!

When the people heard what Saul was saying, they were amazed. They said to each other,

10.2 Large Group Lesson | Preschool

“Isn’t that Saul? Didn’t he used to arrest people for following Jesus? But now he is following Jesus.” They were so surprised; they couldn’t believe what was happening. When I say, “Action!” I want you to make a surprised face and say, “I can’t believe it. Saul is following Jesus!” Lights, camera, action! (Press record while children perform.) Cut! Great job!

But not everyone believed that Jesus was the Son of God and they didn’t like Saul saying that He was, so they came up with a terrible plan to stop him. The mean people decided to catch Saul and hurt him so he couldn’t talk about Jesus anymore. Day and night, the mean people watched the city gates, waiting for Saul to walk through so they could catch him. When I say, “Action!” I want you to look through your pretend binoculars and say, “We’re gonna find you and catch you, Saul!” Lights, camera, action! (Press record while children perform.) Cut! Nice work!

But Saul found out about the mean people’s plan. He knew he had to escape, but how? He couldn’t just leave through the city gate—the mean people would find him and catch him. Fortunately, Saul had some helpers who loved and followed Jesus too. Together, they came up with a plan. The helpers tied a rope to a basket. (Pretend to tie rope.) Then Saul got into the basket and the helpers lowered him over the city wall. (Pretend to lower basket.) When Saul reached the ground, (run in place) he ran away and the mean people never caught him. When I say, “Action!” I want you to pretend to lower the basket and say, “Run away, Saul! Run away!” Lights, camera, action! (Press record while children perform.) Cut! And that’s a wrap!

MUSIC AND CLOSING

(Encourage the children to stand up. Lead them in a worship song of your choice. Following the song, use the rhyme from earlier to help the children sit down again.)

Music: play one worship song

In our story for today, how did Saul escape from the mean people? (Take answers.) That’s right—Saul had helpers who lowered him over the wall in a basket. Thanks to the helpers, Saul was able to escape and tell even more people about Jesus. Jesus gave Saul helpers and He gives us helpers too!

Hmm…I wonder who the helpers are that Jesus gives us? (Pause.) I know—it’s the church! You see, the church isn’t just a building. It’s all of the people in the building who love and follow Jesus. I’m going to act out some ways the church can help you. See if you can guess what I’m doing. (Silently act out the following until the children guess what you are doing.)

Act out “praying.” (Children guess.) The people in our church can pray for you. They can ask God to help you.

Act out “playing.” (Children guess.) The people in our church can play with you. They can be your friends and love you.

Act out “sharing.” (Children guess.) The people in our church can share with you. They can give you things that you need.

Jesus gave you a church full of people to help you, but that’s not all. Jesus wants you to help the people in our church too! YOU can pray for people in the church. And YOU can play with people in the church. And YOU can share with people in the church. That’s because your church helps you and you help your church.

TOPHER’S BIG IDEA

Hey—that’s our Big Idea for today! I think we should tell it to our parents when we see them. Maybe we should practice first. (Appear to be thinking.) Hmm…who could we practice telling? I know! We could tell our friend, Topher the Gopher. Let’s see if we can find him.

(Play “Topher’s Big Idea Video 1” or, for a non-video option, print out the “Topher’s Big Idea Cards” ahead of time and hold up card #1. See the “Topher’s Big Idea” document in the Resource Folder for more suggestions on how to perform the non-video option.)

Video: play “Topher’s Big Idea Video 1”

(Whisper.) Uh-oh. It looks like Topher is asleep. I think we should wake him up. When he wakes up, we can all tell him that my church helps me and I help my church. On the count of 3, let’s all yell, “Topher the Gopher, wake up, wake up!” (Count to 3 and yell with kids. Then play “Topher’s Big Idea Video 2” or hold up card #2.)

Video: play “Topher’s Big Idea Video 2”

Topher: Hey, what’s the Big Idea?

Children and Large Group Leader: My church helps me and I help my church. (Repeat the Big Idea several times. When finished, play “Topher’s Big Idea Video 3” or hold up card #3.)

Video: play “Topher’s Big Idea Video 3”

Topher: Wow! That is a Big Idea! Thanks for telling me! Goodbye kids. (Encourage kids to wave goodbye to Topher as he disappears back into his hole.)

Large Group Leader: Let’s say a prayer together and thank Jesus for giving us a church full of helpers. (Encourage kids to repeat the following prayer after you.)

Dear Jesus,I love you so much!Thank you for my church. It’s full of people who help me.Help me be a helper too.Amen.
