Cloning a Computer
ByMatthew Moore
What is it?
• Disk cloning is the process of copying the contents of one computer hard disk to another disk.
• Unlike standard copying functions, disk cloning involves copying hidden and in-use files
Why do it?
• Standardization: Managing standardized machines is a lot easier than individual ones.
• Training labs: ensures that the user experience will be the same for all users.
Simple Steps with Cloning Software
• Install all desired programs and files to a master computer
• Use software to create an image of the master computer’s hard disk.
• Clone the image to the other computers.
Advantages
• A faulty computer can be wiped clean of data and restored from the untouched master image.
• Do not have to waste time installing individual applications to new computers.
• A comprehensive backup of operating systems and installed softwares
Disadvantages
• Need to have a high number of the same hardware for the same image
• Must have dedicated IT staff when dealing with more than just a few computers
• Care must be given to ensure the master image is reliable and uncorrupted
• Isn't appropriate for daily backups
Final
• Cloning provides institutions and other large organizations to set up and mange their network of computers quickly and effectively, but care must be done to ensure that it functions properly
