Climate Proof Cities

Duration four years, budget 6.6 mln Euro, 13 PhD students, numerous researchers

In cooperation with: University of Manchester, Kassel University and Albert-Ludwigs University Freiburg

How can Dutch cities prepare for the impacts of climate change?

The policy questions:

• How will climate change influence (Dutch) cities?

• How vulnerable are (Dutch) cities for climate change, and what will be the impacts?

• What kind of adaptation measures are possible and effective?

• How to implement these measures? (urban climate governance)

• What will be the balance of urgency, costs and benefits?

The practical approach: cases

Work package: integration

Work package: urban climate governance

Work package: adaptation measures

Work package: sensitivity, impacts and vulnerability

Work package: urban climate

Case: building and street

Case: neighbourhood and business parks

Case: integral water management (neighbourhood and city level)

Case: region/climate buffers

The results indicate that the heat wave sensitivity classification of residential buildings can be made. Detached houses seem to be most sensitive, followed by the Corner and Semi-detached house. Least sensitive seems to be the Terraced house.

Assessing future indoor climate

!! The thirty years from 1976 to and including 2005 are assessed; !! These thirty years together provide the climate condition for the 1990s; !! Future climate conditions are based on thirty year periods for the future,

e.g. the 2100s are represented by the period from 2086 to 2115.
