IPPOG, November 2014
Rolling with Rutherford
• Indirect measurement using statistics• Roll marbles to find probability of hits.– Each student rolls 10 times, gets # of hits/10– Combine student results in histogram– Find peak probability
• Overly simple approach: d=PL/2N– L=width of field, N = no. marble targets, P = prob– Watch student video
Quark Workbench
• Quark combination rules• Fit puzzle pieces together– Each piece represents a quark with charge, color– Fit together to make mesons and baryons– Discover conservation rules in quark combinations– Watch student video
Mass Calc Z
• Students have ATLAS and CMS dimuon events• All Z candidates• All muons close to transverse to beam axis– Students analyze in 2 dimensions– Add momentum vectors and energy scalars– Use momentum and energy to find invariant mass– Watch student video

Particle profiles
New poster about elementary particles
Initial version created in 2005 for the international physics year An « equivalent », for particles, of the chemical elements periodic table
Poster printed and sent for free to all high schools in France That poster is still on the walls of many classrooms Most physics teachers we met know about it
2014 update: about time! A decade after the first version, two years after the BEH boson discovery A joint physicists + teachers + communication experts project
Budget significantly reduced w.r.t. 2005, but the plan remains the same Print and ship A0 copies of the poster to all high schools
Additional educational material associated with the poster
The 2005 poster was translated to many langages Voluntary work, no central collaboration
Do we (you) want to turn this into an IPPOG resource?

Turning the poster into an IPPOG resource
Our proposal: to provide any interested country with the high-definition files (A0 A4) of the poster translated in your langage, based on your translations of the different blocks of text
Either starting from the French version, or from an English version validated by nativespeakers Translation procedure to be defined Could be as simple as an online survey with one editable field for each block of text
Any suggestion to go further?

COSMIX cases: an update
See Zeuthen meeting for details about this new detector
The 10 cases for the Paris area have been produced by Bordeaux IN2P3 lab (CENBG) during Summer
Now is the time to make them circulate in high schools
