Cheshire College – South & West is a leading Further Education College in Northern England.

The state-of-the-art educational facility, located in the beautiful leafy county of Cheshire, is renowned for providing students with first-class education and outstanding facilities to enhance their learning.

Since 2013, we have welcomed International students from all over the world to participate in our Summer School. During that time, we have gained an excellent reputation for providing excellent learning and an immersive cultural experience.

The English course is designed to be an interesting, enjoyable and effective way for students to improve their language skills. All our teachers are qualified to teach English as a second language and the lessons are packed full of varied activities, such as through role-plays, songs and games, to boost language learning.

Our International Team arranges an exciting and varied cultural and activity programme. Our desirable location provides easy access to some of the UK’s most popular tourist sights such as London, Manchester, Liverpool and Stratford-upon-Avon. The outstanding facilities at CCSW are utilised for an exciting and varied sports programme, in which students can deploy their newly-learned English skills.

Our Courses

The International Department offers a wonderful range of courses throughout the year to suit different groups’ needs. The General English course is available for all English levels, from complete beginner through to advanced, and aims to develop students’ practical communication skills in speaking and listening. In addition to the General English course, there are a number of alternative (CLIL) courses. CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning and is simply the teaching of subjects such as Business or Hospitality to learners in English rather than their own language. Consequently, students are not only learning about the subject, they are also improving their English language! Courses available include: General English, Business Innovation, Critical Thinking, Environmental Issues, Employability Skills, Hospitality, School Subjects, International Relations.

College Facilities

In line with the College’s commitment to provide excellent education, the College has made substantial investments to ensure that teachers and students are provided with world-class academic facilities.

Facilities comprise:

Classrooms - The classrooms foster an open and comfortable learning environment with plenty of room for active learning. All classrooms offer access to the high-speed wireless network and are all equipped with data projectors and audio equipment to facilitate lessons.

Learning Resource Centre - The Campus’ three-storey library hosts thousands of books, online journals and articles. Furthermore, there are 120 networked computers and space for group and private study.

ICT -The College is proud of its well-equipped computer rooms, iPads, a suite of networked computers with internet access, projectors and printing facilities.

Wi-Fi - Learners can get fast, free, secure Wi-Fi all over the Campus. If students bring their own device, they can connect to Wi-Fi anywhere in the building, including the classrooms and social areas.

Accommodation

One of the best ways for students to improve their spoken English is to choose homestay accommodation. The standard of our homestay accommodation is excellent. We have chosen the homestay families carefully and the hosts are friendly and always have time to talk to you. We are extremely proud of our record in accommodating students in homestay families and of the very positive feedback we receive from our students.

Excursions & Attractions

Excursions are an integral part of the whole language learning experience and are designed to develop your English whilst you learn about British life and culture. CCSW’s desirable location makes it possible to visit a number of world-class towns and cities, such as, London, Liverpool, Manchester, Chester, Llandudno, Cambridge, Oxford, York and Stratford-upon-Avon.

Sports & Activities

We offer a varied and exciting sports and activities schedule organized by our dynamic and enthusiastic Activity Team to complement your study programme. Our state-of-the-art sports and leisure facilities include a fitness suite, a climbing wall and a sports arena with provision for basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis as well as five-a-side football. In addition to the traditional sports, students also play other games such as Dodgeball, Rounders, Capture the Flag and British Bulldog. Our dynamic and enthusiastic Activity Team also provide an entertainment programme filled with games, quizzes and other activities to keep the group occupied.

Welfare

The College is committed to offering students a safe and secure environment in which they can thrive socially and academically. Our staff are available to support learners, 24 hours a day, with any needs they may have during their stay.

We can help you create the exact programme to suit your group. You can choose the learning programme, the accommodation, the time of year and any duration you like that suits your group’s requirements. Alongside the learning programme, it is possible to arrange any combination of activities your group would like to take part in, from cultural trips and sightseeing to sports and thrilling adventure activities. General English

All of our General English classes are taught using a communicative method of teaching English. Consequently, even though all aspects of language are covered, there is a particular emphasis given to speaking and listening that will involve students communicating with each other in English. Our qualified language teachers use a variety of modern teaching approaches and teach effectively to small groups. The teachers will provide students with fun and challenging speaking activities which allow students to practise the language in real-life situations and contexts. Our activities, such as role-plays, discussions, debates, games, problem-solving activities and quizzes, are designed to generate a lot of interaction so that students can practise their speaking and listening skills.

Business and Innovation

Our Business and Innovation course has been designed for young entrepreneurs of the future. The course focuses on business skills such as budgeting and finance, marketing and product design. Students will not only develop their business and leadership skills but they will build on their fluency and confidence in using English. Students are encouraged to be creative and engage in classroom discussions and debates. As part of the course, students will work together to develop a business plan for the launching of a new product and then deliver a product pitch to a panel of judges who will then offer valuable feedback and advice to students.

Critical Thinking

The Critical Thinking course uses thought experiments, debates and discussions to improve students’ analytical skills, introduce them to new ideas, and give them the confidence they need to argue effectively. Through specific lessons, the students are encouraged to ask questions and engage in dialogue with each other to solve problems, often in ‘team’ situations. On this course, students will not only develop their ability to interpret, analyse and evaluate ideas and arguments but enables them to build on their fluency and confidence in using English.

Environmental Issues

This course provides a deeper understanding of environmental problems such as global warming and climate change, as well as addressing all the key aspects of sustainable energy, such as hydroelectricity, solar energy, wind energy, wave power, geothermal energy and tidal power. This learning approach simultaneously teaches both the English language and the language skills related to environmental issues. Students are encouraged to be creative and engage in classroom discussions and debates. As part of the course, students will take part in a group project where they can develop key study skills in research and analysis as well as have the opportunity to give presentations based on their own research.

Employability Skills

The Employability Skills course takes an activity-based approach to raising students’ awareness about employer expectations and the working environment. The course contains activities designed to develop skills in applying for a job, writing a CV, letter writing, interview techniques, effective communication and the importance of working as a team. There is a focus on employability skills, however it enables students to use language structures with confidence, and a skills focus to improve your spoken and written English. As part of the course, students will take part in a group project where they can develop their skills in working as a team.

Hospitality

This hospitality course is designed to develop your skills within the hospitality industry whilst learning the English language. The course will give an insight into the hospitality industry and trends within the UK as well as focussing on customer service, working in a team and the importance of communication and interpersonal skills. Students will learn hospitality-related words and expressions to boost their understanding of colleagues and customers. The course involves using role-plays and task-based activities to develop students’ communication skills. As part of the course, students will take part in a group project where they can develop their skills in public speaking and working as a team.

Catering

This course has been developed to provide a more hands-on approach with more time being spent on developing your kitchen skills. Throughout this short course, students will attend culinary demonstrations, and learn new skills and techniques in hands-on cooking workshops both in the college and at Harthill Cookery School. Our experienced teachers and chefs will lead these sessions to impart their knowledge, drawing from years of industry experience. As part of the programme, you will work in the College’s kitchens and AA Rosette standard ‘Academy’ restaurants as well as attending Harthill Cookery School.

Humanities

This course develops language learning through studying subjects such as Geography, Geology, World History, Health, Earth and Environmental Science. This learning approach simultaneously teaches both the English language and the vocabulary, grammar and language skills related to a variety of subjects. Learning a subject through another language can provide extra motivation for the subject they study at school as well as develop students’ confidence and their ability to speak in English.

International Relations

The International Relations course develops students’ understanding of key issues in world politics in the 21st Century. This course provides students with a deeper understanding of key international organisations such as the United Nations, as well as enabling students to discuss crucial global issues. On this course, students will be able to build on their fluency and confidence in using English. Students are encouraged to be creative and engage in classroom discussions and debates. As part of the course, students will take part in a UN simulation where they can showcase their negotiation, public speaking and debating skills.
