CLASS OF 2018 GLOUCESTER CATHOLIC SAYS GOODBYE
MRS. CHRISTINE MCKENNA
“We bid farewell to a
remarkable and beautiful
colleague and friend.
This world is a much bet-
ter place, we are better
people because we have
been touched by the life
of Chris McKenna. May
the choirs of angels
come and greet you, as
you enter Paradise! May
the Lord enfold you in
His Mercy! May you
have Eternal Life!”

ADAM TALIAFERRO COMMUNITY SERVICE FUNDRAISER
For the 12th consecu-
tive year Gloucester
Catholic participated in
the Adam Taliaferro
By Tom Iacovone
Community Service Ath-
lete of the Year contest.
The Adam Taliaferro
Foundation supports ath-
letes who suffer head and
spinal injuries in New
Jersey, Pennsylvania, and
Delaware. It also pro-
vides educational and
financial support related
to the research, preven-
tion, and care of these
injuries. The competition
is between local high
schools to see which
school can raise the most
money for this great
cause. This year Glouces-
2018 VALEDICTORIAN 2018 SALUTATORIAN
Our Valedictorian
and President of the
Marian Chapter of the
National Honor Society,
Patrick “Patch” Glen-
nan, was awarded the
Catherine Sheridan
Scholarship during
eighth grade in our jun-
ior high. Working hard
earned him the honor of
Principal’s List all four
years along with being
elected to the Student
Council each year here
at GC. As a member of
the Forensic Team, he
held first place in the
diocese, winning Con-
temporaneous Speaking
which allowed him the
honor of participating in
the Nation Catholic Fo-
rensic League held in
Sacramento, California.
He has claimed this
honor twice. Patch has
been a member of the
Cross Country team and
has earned four varsity
letters for his dedication
to the team. Along with
his academic excel-
lence, Patch volunteers
his time teaching
younger children about
the fiddle and opening
them up to a love for
Irish music. His love
and skill of playing the
fiddle has given him the
opportunity to compete
in the Mid-Atlantic
Fleadh Cheoil where he
placed 2nd. We at GC
have enjoyed the many
occasions when Patch
has played for us. We
wish Patch well as he
continues his education
at the University of
Pennsylvania.
Our Salutatorian,
Laura Blaston, is recog-
nized for her dedication
as a student athlete with
strong leadership skills
and a commitment to ac-
ademics and community
service. She is a member
of the Marian Chapter of
the National Honor Soci-
ety and has also earned
Principal’s List all four
years and was chosen
twice as a Student of the
Month. During 2016-
2017, Laura was a team
leader and fund raiser for
Multiple Sclerosis Muck
Fest which included re-
cruiting team members
and organizing web pag-
es which were vital to
raising funds for the
event . As a vital member
of the Homecoming and
Prom committees, Laura
worked hard to help with
the planning of these im-
portant events. As an ath-
lete, she was a member
of the swim team, earn-
ing four varsity letters as
a diver and being named
to First Team Tri-County
in 2017. As a member of
the tennis team, Laura
was named captain of the
team and earned three
varsity letters. She
earned the honor of being
named MVP of the tennis
team because of her hard
work and dedication.
Laura enjoys being in
demand by family for
babysitting honors and
enjoys quality time spent
with many nieces and
nephews. We wish Laura
well as she continues her
academic career at Villa-
nova University.
On March 20, 2018,
we lost a member of the
GC family. Mrs. Chris-
tine McKenna was an
integral part of Glouces-
ter Catholic for 14 years.
Chris could always be
found in the library or in
the Dominican Center in
front of a computer
working on a variety of
projects some of which
included the yearbook,
open house literature,
eighth grade visitation
welcome packets, fund-
raising brochures, ads,
posters and anything
else needed for the pro-
motion and develop-
ment of Gloucester
Catholic.
Chris gave so much
of her time and energy
helping others, especial-
ly through her volunteer
work at St. John of God
in Westville. She loved
being able to spend time
with so many wonderful
students, faculty, staff,
and other volunteers
there. She made the lit-
urgies and holiday cele-
brations more special
because of her musical
and artistic talents.
Chris was one in a
million. She was dedi-
cated to helping others
and above all she was
filled with a love for
God and her family. She
truly was a faithful serv-
ant of God.
ter Catholic was repre-
sented by Mike Zel-
inski, a member of the
GC football team and
Chloe Fredericksdorf, a
member of the GC field
hockey team. Together
they have collected over
$2700.00 for this great
cause. Both students
attended a luncheon
held at Lincoln Finan-
cial Field on Tuesday,
May 8 where they were
awarded scholarships to
help further their educa-
tion.

More excitement oc-curred at the opening of the ice cream bar featur-ing a variety of toppings and flavors to choose from. However, the height of all the excite-ment occurred when crowning this year’s prom king and queen. With a little help from former royal couple Camryn McHugh and Evan Giordano, they crowned Jennifer Ale-mian and Conor Regan as the new king and queen. Together they danced their first dance to Perfect by Ed Sheeran. As the night came to a close, and the sadness of prom being over hit the seniors especially, any-one who was in attend-ance that night have memories to carry with them forever.

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS PROM
Students celebrated a glorious “Midnight in Paris” theme at the Col-lingswood Grand Ball-room. The night was filled with laughter, great food, and lots of dancing. The DJ started the night off slowly with some classic Frank Sina-tra as GC’s best dressed students ate a delicious buffet style dinner. The night slowly heated up with some energetic throwbacks that caused the dance floor to be-come a melting pot of both the junior and sen-ior classes. There were even a few dancing cam-eos on the second floor balcony made by Mrs. Reed and of course the “king of smooth moves,” Mr. Pilla.

I love scuba diving.
At the age of eight, I
began pool training for
scuba diving and by the
time I was eleven years
old, I achieved my first
certification for Open
Water Scuba Diving.
This certification al-
lowed me to dive to thir-
ty feet of water with a
certified instructor. By
the age of twelve, I re-
ceived my certification
for advanced diving.
I received certifica-
tion for Rescue Diving
worldwide and Enriched
Air Certification, and as
a seventeen year old, I
achieved certi-
fication as
Master Scuba
Diver. With
each and every
certification I
receive, it
brings me clos-
er to attaining
my main goal
of Dive In-
structor that
will allow me
to coordinate
dives and also
be prepared for emergen-
cy dives during accidents
or other instances where
lives might be at risk.
There are many certifica-
tions needed to achieve
the final goal of becom-
ing an instructor and I
am up for the task. I am
looking forward to this
summer in order to
achieve this goal. Of all
the certifications thus far,
my passion is Wreck
Diving and Deep Diving.
After graduation I will
be attending Florida At-
lantic where I will have
the opportunity to be
working on the water,
and in the water doing
what I love.

At the age of four I
found my passion and
love of riding horses.
That love led to training
and competing in what I
love, “Barrel Racing.” I
began Barrel Racing at
the age of eight and have
continued this difficult
and exciting sport to the
present.
During my sophomore
year, I trained my first
horse, “Cody” for Barrel
Racing. Training a horse
for this sport takes hours
and hours of practice and
discipline, but I enjoyed
every minute of it. Last
year, as a junior, I joined
the New Jersey High
School Rodeo Associa-
tion. This allowed me to
compete in many races
and also to go up against
some of the best riders in
New Jersey. I made it to

the National Finals
where I placed 71st in the
world. During this, my
senior year, I qualified
for three events; Pole
Bending, Barrel Racing,
and Goat Tying.
To date I have trained
three “Finished Barrel”
horses and I continue to
compete in this challeng-
ing sport. After gradua-
tion I will be heading to
Colorado to become a
“Flarity,” a Barrel Horse
trainer.

I started competing at
Rainbow Gymnastics in
the summer of 2012. In
May 2015, while com-
peting at the Bronze
Level, I was the Floor
and Vault State Cham-
pion. The past two years
have been exciting as I
led my USAIGC Silver
team as captain. In
2017, I was honored to
earn the Judge’s Choice
award for most expres-
sive floor routine at the
NJ States and Regionals
competitions. This floor
routine was one of my
favorite routines. Alt-
hough I competed on
the vault, bar, beam, and
floor apparatuses, I have
to say my favorite event
to compete in was the
floor event. Practicing
twice a week for four
hours each of those two
days was difficult be-
cause of other obliga-
tions such as school,
swimming, tutoring, and
volunteering, but it was
well worth it. As of the
beginning of May, I re-
tired from gymnastics. It
was great fun while it
lasted and I will be sad
not to be involved in the
sport any longer. I will
be attending Villanova
University in the fall and
will not have the time to
devote to gymnastics.

sions because I loved
hearing my classmates’
views on their experi-
ences and how they
compared to my own.
During our service
trips, I had many eye-
opening experiences
that changed the way I
view people and their
circumstances. I think
the most memorable
lesson I have learned
this year is the state of
our environment. I was
aware that pollution
was an issue, however
in a recent presentation
and discussion during
class, I learned just how
polluted the Earth has
become. Seeing the
dangerous air in China,
the deforestation occur-
ring, and the water pol-
lution in Flint, Michi-
gan, I am now greatly
aware and cautious of
how I treat our planet.
I chose to attend the
University of Scranton
next year for reasons
that are very similar as
to why I chose to attend
Gloucester Catholic.
Scranton is a Jesuit
University which val-
ues service and social
justice. I will continue
living out Catholic So-
cial Teaching after I
leave GC by continuing
my involvement in ser-
vice trips and retreats at
the University of Scran-
ton. I will make an ef-
fort to continue to step
outside of my comfort
zone and give back to
those who are less for-
tunate.
DISNEY
It was a rainy morn-
ing in Philly as our GC
senior class was ready
for the highly anticipated
Senior Disney Trip. The
plane was delayed due to
bad weather, but that did
not dampen our spirits or
excitement as we waited
patiently to take off.
Once we arrived in Flori-
da, we were greeted with
sunshine and a tempera-
ture of 80 degrees, and
of course lots of smiles
as we deplaned.
On the first two days
of our trip we could visit
our choice of parks
which included Magic
By Meghan McGonigle Kingdom, Epcot, Animal
Kingdom, or Hollywood
Studios. On the third day
of our whirlwind adven-
ture, we attended Univer-
sal Studios followed by
shopping and a great din-
ner at Disney Springs. A
wonderful time was had
by all. We looked for-
ward to the next day’s
adventure even though
we knew this would be
our last full day together
on this amazing trip.
During our last day
we enjoyed soaking up
the sun while enjoying
the time at Blizzard
Beach Water Park. That
evening we attended the
Blue Man Group Show at
iRace4Vocations
On Sunday, April 22
students from GC partici-
pated in iRace 4 Voca-
tions 5K Race held at
Washington Lake Park in
Washington Township. It
was a very well attended
race that continues to
grow larger every year.
The Diocese of Camden
promotes this race each
year and it is always a
successful endeavor.
Schools from all over the
diocese are represented
as well as parishioners
from many different par-
ishes in the diocese. Be-
fore the race began a
beautiful Mass was cel-
ebrated by Bishop Den-
nis Sullivan. Our base-
ball, softball, track, and
cheerleading teams
were there along with
other students repre-
senting our school for
the diocese. It was a
beautiful day for the
race. The weather was
great and everyone en-
joyed themselves as
they look forward to
next year’s race.
SENIOR SERVICE
This year 25 seniors
challenged themselves to
live as Christ’s disciples
in a service learning
course. Throughout the
year the students learned
about Catholic Social
Teaching and Social Jus-
tice through hands on
service at various loca-
tions. They witnessed
“Life and Dignity of the
By Alaina Silber Human Person” by meet-
ing Ricky Britner, a vi-
brant man living with
Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
Students learned about
“Option for the Poor and
Vulnerable” by making
friends at New Visions
Homeless Day Shelter.
They highlighted
“Solidarity” through
making bikes for emi-
grants at Catholic Chari-
ties in Camden. These
are just a few examples
of the many works the
students did this year.
Senior, Vanessa Romano
said, “In this class, Reli-
gion Service, was an ex-
cellent experience for me
and my fellow class-
mates. Not only do we
have hands on activities
in class, but we also take
class trips to help people
in need, such as the poor,
homeless, and others in
need.”
Universal where every-
one had a blast and really
enjoyed the show. Dinner
was great and the fun
continued at “The
Groove” where DJ
Poproxx was the enter-
tainment. We danced,
sang, and enjoyed each
other’s company.
As they say, “All
good things must come
to an end.” Before head-
ing to the airport to re-
turn home, we spent the
time at Animal Kingdom.
Everyone had a great
time and it was sad to
have the time go by so
quickly, but the memo-
ries will last a lifetime.
At the beginning of
this year, I truthfully
could not have told you
what the words “Social
Justice” meant. Through-
out the classes and trips
taken with my Religion
Service class, I now have
a clear knowledge of so-
cial justice and what it
means to me. I interpret
social justice as the
working and giving of
myself to benefit those
who are less fortunate in
my community. I value
my role within social jus-
tice because as a Catho-
lic, I feel privileged to
have had the opportunity
to give back to my com-
munity through my per-
sonal service, as well as
the service I complete
with my class.
Overall, I am grateful
that I had the opportunity
this year to be a part of a
course that taught me
more than what I could
have learned from a text-
book. Anybody can pick
up a book and read about
the changes that are
needed to be made in the
community, however it
was much more impact-
ful to be a part of that
change. I personally en-
joyed the class discus-

MR. GC 2018
After many hours
and evenings preparing
and practicing, the Mr.
GC show and competi-
tion was a great suc-

McGonigle and Emma
Holian were the MCs
for the night of fun and
entertainment. Skits
performed by the con-
testants were hilarious
and kept the audience
laughing throughout the
show.
The contestants
were, Matt Mastrogio-

TJ Logan as Mr. Febru-
ary, Greg Cann as Mr.

Mr. April, Kyle Mur-

Ian Murphy as Mr. July,
Matt Gray as Mr. August,
Evan Giordano as Mr.
September, Chris Poli-
doro as Mr. October,
Ronny Lupton as Mr.

The competition end-
ed in a tie between Mr.

ber. In order to break the
tie a “dance-off” ensued
with the winner being the

loudest and longest ap-
plause. In the end the
crown went to TJ Logan,
Mr. February.

On March 26, the

celebrates the future
completion of our high

playing games in the

fun and very competitive.

Superlatives. The
students had a
great time trying
to guess who would be
the recipient of each
award. After the games
ended, the students
watched a slide show set
to music that highlighted
our high school experi-
ences. A lot of laughs
were had and a little bit
of sadness with the reali-
zation that our high
school years are almost
over. This event was
filled with fun, prizes,
and nostalgia. Overall,
Senior Night was an
amazing celebration of
the unity and success of
the Class of 2018! A
special thank you to
Mrs. Morgan for all she
did to make this a spe-
cial night for us.
Throughout this year
in Religion, I learned, I
experienced, and I en-
countered new people
and things. This year’s
main subject was Social
Justice. At every trip, lec-
ture, and class, my inter-
pretation of social justice
changed. At the begin-
ning of the year, I could
not have told you what it
means, but now I can tru-
ly say what Social Justice
means to me. Social Jus-
tice is the act of applying
yourself and utilizing
your resources to other
people that need them.
It’s not just sending a
check to hungry children
in Africa, but getting up
and serving your commu-
nity or other communi-
ties, it’s exerting yourself
to society and it being
beneficial to those
around you. Social Jus-
tice is creating equality
in the world around us,
whether it’s concerning
gender, race, ethnicity, or
religion, it is making the
world a union for the
common good. I learned
that with compassion you
can help those in need,
but also help yourself
spiritually, emotionally,
and physically.
My eye opening expe-
rience was seeing the
challenges people live
with in inner cities and
how much people suffer
who live there. Not only
do they suffer from the
stereotypical drug and
gun violence, but also
from water problems,
sewer problems, and
much more. I see how I
live and how privileged I
am to be so lucky and I
don’t have to ask myself
some days, “Is this water
clean enough to drink?”
or “How bad is the smell
outside?” After gradua-

By Chloe Fredericksdorf
COLLEGE COMMITMENTS “We must restore
hope
to young people,
help the old,
be open to the fu-ture,
spread love.

preach peace.”
