CIVIL 3D USER GROUP WORKSHOPOCTOBER 19The American Council of Engineering Companies of Wisconsin is excited to once again host the Civil 3D User Group Workshop. This event will give attendees extended networking opportunities and the chance to learn from experts in Civil 3D. This workshop is open to engineers, technicians, resellers, government officials and anyone else who uses Civil 3D. This workshop will also feature specific WisDOT instruction and guidelines.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOUR CREDITSCredits awarded at the Civil 3D User Group Workshop are eligible for Wisconsin continuing education credit. Professional development hour (PDH) credits will be awarded for sessions attended. Workshop attendance on October 19 is eligible for an estimated 5 PDH credits. ACEC WI is listed as an approved provider of continuing education programs for professional engineers by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. WORKSHOP DETAILS

WORKSHOP APPThe workshop will be utilizing a phone app instead of the traditional booklet. The app contains all session information, maps, personalized scheduling information, presentation materials and evaluation surveys. These materials will also be available after the workshop through the app.

If you do not have a smart phone, you can download the documents ahead of time from your computer.

DOWNLOADING THE APPThe workshop app is available for both Android and Iphone users. It is highly recommended that you download the app before the workshop. The app and download instructions will be available in early October.

Guest Room ReservationsGuest rooms are available at the Glacier Canyon Lodge the evening of October 18 for $100. This rate is available to the entire room block. Rooms are also available at the prevailing rate. Room rates are subject to tax and nightly resort fee ($17.95,) unless tax-exempt information is provided. This is a chance for attendees to review what Autodesk is currently doing and provide suggestions and feedback for future implementation. WelcomeMatt Graun, workshop co-chair, will briefly welcome participants and provide background on this inaugural workshop. He will touch on the need for the workshop, recognize the individuals that played key roles in planning the workshop and provide an overview of the day’s events.

WisDOT UpdateBrad Hollister has led the Methods/Development Unit within WisDOT since 2011. Brad has been a pivotal member in leading the efforts to migrate the department to Civil 3D and AutoCAD. He will provide updates on current WisDOT activity, offer some insight on focus areas and discuss future goals for the Methods/Development Unit.

Keynote AddressKaren Weiss will conclude the opening session with her keynote address. Ms. Weiss recently became the Senior Industry Strategy Manager for Civil Infrastructure Owners at Autodesk. Before joining Autodesk in 2008, Ms. Weiss spent 17 years with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Ms. Weiss later spent time in the private sector, managing design and planning projects for a private consulting firm in Wisconsin. She will present on ‘The Future of Making Things’.

While the pavement structure may stay the same on a highway project, the side slopes are always changing. That’s why WisDOT Methods created DaylightProfileControlled. This subassembly can take care of all possible scenarios from a rural subgrade shoulder point to daylight (slope intercept) with a minimum number of assemblies and regions. This class is a deep dive into the parameters that control this subassembly, many scenarios that it can be applied to, and the ways that this subassembly can be most efficiently used.

Today’s roadway construction process includes both the continuous flow of existing traffic as well as the safety of these drivers. This course will provide attendees with the knowledge of how to create staged corridors and surface models, using examples from a project (IH 39/90 - CTH O to USH 14 Interchange North) that used staged models to provide a complete set of plans. The use of Civil 3D in staged situations also allows the user to see where interim slope intercepts, drainage problem areas, and other issues may develop.

Part of what makes Pipe Networks in Civil 3D great is that once it’s set up, it’s a very simple toolset to use. Properly configured Pipe Catalogs, Parts Lists, Styles and Layers can make for a streamlined workflow, allowing for more automated labeling, tabling, and quantification. Come join us and learn about simple edits to the Pipe Catalog to aid in better naming in your parts, as well as the annotation of those parts. Learn how to create efficient Parts Lists so users simply select from them and all Styles, Layers, etc. are automated. We’ll look at Object Layer and Labeling tips and tricks as well.

This course will cover complex modeling techniques and modeling workflows used on an urban freeway rehabilitation and restriping project in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. The course will touch on best practices for data and file management for large projects. The course will discuss modeling techniques used for unique rehab project requirements that include modeling split profile barrier, matching existing daylight conditions, and modeling resurface areas.

We will discuss how to manage a repeatedly changing surface file, with both combined and merged sources of data and how to maintain data shortcuts, file paths, and corridor targets.

Learning Objectives:• Learn how to determine locations and modeling of split profile barriers.• Discover how to match existing drainage conditions and the profile to

parameter reference tool to control daylight slopes.• Understand how to model resurface portions of a roadway.

B2 Ramping Into The Future[Construction & Surveying Track]Speaker: Brian Veit, KL EngineeringTarget Audience: Designers & MunicipalitiesSuggested Expertise Level: Intermediate/Advanced (2+ years)

Every curb ramp is unique in its own way. Gone are the days of contractors winging it out in the field. As ADA requirements are more closely monitored and both public and private projects require additional details, curb ramp specifics need to be outlined earlier in the design process. Using Civil 3D to model the details of urban curb ramps in a corridor can affect crucial aspects of the project, such as drainage and right-of-way, saving valuable time and money. This course will walk participants through the process – from where to start and stop the model through how to label and provide details for construction. Civil 3D’s Subassembly Composer will be used to create elements in the model that aid in design. Project Designers, Project Managers, and CAD Technicians alike will benefit from learning how to modify profiles to fit specific situations, finalize the curb ramp model, further modifying the mainline corridor (if needed), and incorporating the curb ramp into the overall model.

Learning Objectives:• Discover where to model curb ramps.• Be able to setup a corridor and check ADA compliance.• Learn how to construct a complete top and datum surface.

In this session, we’ll show how to bring GIS data schemas and attribution into the field for more thorough data collection (ex. W/WW assets), and then how to get these “extended attributes” into the C3D model via the Survey Database. We’ll then explore examples of leveraging “extended attributes” to significantly boost productivity within C3D.

Point Clouds are a very important component in current infrastructure projects and it is vital to know how to handle them for successful project execution. This class will provide all the necessary information to import, process, and extract information from point cloud data in Autodesk AEC products. This class will provide details on surface/terrain generation from high resolution point cloud data in InfraWorks and demonstrate how use it in Civil 3D. The class will also cover how to extract breaklines from point cloud with utmost accuracy and take them to Civil 3D for detailed design.

B4 Vertical Clearance Modeling[Surfaces Track]Speaker: Brad Groh, JT EngineeringTarget Audience: People who model roadway intersections or drivewaysSuggested Expertise Level: Intermediate (1-2 years)

This course will describe the process of modeling vertical clearances of lowboys and other customized vehicles with sensitive vertical clearance concerns. Techniques for evaluating Civil 3D surfaces for vertical compliance using Autoturn Pro 9.1 will be discussed, as well as the applicability of the test vehicles on the state highway system. Test cases at conventional intersections, roundabouts, and driveways will be examined in an effort to underscore the importance of completing this evaluation early in the design process. Mitigations strategies and improvement suggestions will also be offered as the models are examined.

This class will explore the benefits of using Autodesk Vehicle Tracking (AVT). Running through whats included in Civil 3D 2018 vs what comes with the AEC Collection. Learn to create swept paths along alignments and vertical clearances on surfaces. We will go over the plethora of vehicles included “out of the box”. Attendees will see how easy it is to use the parking stall tools and generate stall counts. Lastly, we will go through the capabilities of roundabouts.

In this breakout session, we will be taking a look at a workflow under the Autodesk umbrella to process photos collected with a UAV. We will be covering best practice workflows from from processing the drone data in Recap 360, taking those results into Infraworks for use and further processing, then finally into Civil 3D. The end result will be a functioning TIN surface inside of Civil 3D as well as a geo-referenced ortho mosaic.

C4 Site Grading with Corridors: Everything has Changed![Surfaces Track]Speaker: Brian Levendowski, CTCTarget Audience: Civil 3D Users, Engineers, Managers, TechniciansSuggested Expertise Level: Intermediate/Advanced (2+ years)

Site grading with Civil 3D has traditionally fallen short of what we think of as true 3D modeling. We typically generate a finished grade Surface, but we’re not truly modeling our site, including curb, sidewalk, ponds, subgrade, etc. Well, this all changes with Civil 3D 2018, and the new features that finally make site design with Corridors a realistic option. New features, such as Corridor Baselines from Feature Lines, “bow-tie” cleanup, allow for a much more dynamic and stable site models then previously found with traditional Feature Line-only and Grading Object workflows.

This class will walk through how to set up a truly dynamic Corridor site model, showing realistic application of new and long-hidden features in Civil 3D. We’ll then show how this data-rich model can be harnessed, including QTO in both C3D and Navisworks, as well as site creation in Revit. Come join us and learn how site grading just got a whole lot better!

In this class we will take a look at the process of gathering point cloud

information based upon photogrammetry and transforming the data from ReCap into Infraworks. We will also go over the advantages of using point clouds in the design process.

In the WisDOT design work flow the refinement surface is the ultimate surface, representing the final design, as well as the surface data for sheet sets and other data. In this session we will learn what data is needed from the design files, how to properly reference and combine that data into refinement surfaces, and how to ensure the refinement surface is up to date before using it in the necessary sheets.

WisDOT’s Methods Development Unit has been actively working on the configuration for Civil 3D 2018. This session is an early look at some of what WisDOT has planned. Demonstration and discussion will center new plot style table standards, template referencing, and the decision making process for project version migration.

D5 Civil 3D in a Bently Microstation World[Miscellaneous Track]Speaker: Oscar Casteneda, Infrastructure EngineersTarget Audience: People responsible for managing data from survey recollection to base file creationSuggested Expertise Level: AnyCivil 3D and Microstation: it’s like oil and water, right? They just don’t mix! Well, that’s only half true. Working in an environment with both platforms is possible, but comes with some challenges. Understanding those differences and how to overcome them is the focus of this class.

Come learn about what it’s like implementing Civil 3D in a Bentley Microstation environment, including how to take core civil design data, such as alignments, profiles, and surfaces between the two applications. We’ll look at the pros and cons of doing this, including best practices, tips and tricks.

Attend this class and unleash the power of Infraworks component roads. This class will introduce users how to construct roads one element at a time, create tapers & transitions, and modify roads to an accurate design. The class will demonstrate how to create intersections of crossing components roads and how to place a structure within the component road. Once we have modeled our component roads we will evaluate adjusting profiles, view our model in cross section view, and modify daylight grading. Additionally, we will use the tools with Infraworks to get some quantities on our preliminary design.

Learning Objectives:• Gain knowledge of Infraworks as a design tool.• Discover how information can transfer to and from Civil 3D.• Learn features in Infraworks that have been underused in the past.

E4 Geotechnical Module as a Hole[Surfaces Track]Speaker: Doug Benoit, Managed DesignTarget Audience: Engineers, WisDOT, MunicipalitiesSuggested Expertise Level: Intermediate (1-2 years)

Topics for this session will include: importing raster files using Autodesk AutoCAD Raster Design and using the correlation tools to place and fit the data. Once the raster data has been imported and placed, we will then use the Cleanup tools before we export out the World file for future use. We will then use the Vectorize and Recognize Text and the Snap tools to convert raster data to vector data.

Learning Objectives:• Learn how to create borehole .csv files.• Understand how to review styles and hatching for borehole data.• Learn to create projects and import data from borehole files.

E5 Utilize Mapping Tools for Aerial and GIS Data[Miscellaneous Track]Speaker: Mark Degner, Ayres AssociatesTarget Audience: Municipal and WisDOT UsersSuggested Expertise Level: Any

Learn how to insert coordinate correct and reproject if needed with aerial data. Decide the insertion method based on desired printed look (color vs. BW) and if fade is desired. Learn to create a data layer if inserting through the Task Pane. Learn to connect to various data files and modify the visual styles as needed (hatching, linetypes, text styles, colors, size...). The user can also learn to create mailing lists by selecting all interested parcels and export data to a spreadsheet. Learn how to extract boundaries, parcels, text or other GIS data. Extraction can save time and allow users to stay current with less effort.

Learning Objectives: • Gain a basic understanding of the Task Pane.• Learn how to extract GIS data instead of less efficient manual creation.• Discover how to reference aerial images.• Understand how to connect to GIS data sources and create custom
