About the Themes

”Smart cities need to be efficient but also preserve opportunities for spontaneity, serendipity, and sociability. If we program all of the randomness out, we’ll have turned them from rich, living organisms into dull mechanical automatons”

There are three themes which start-ups/SMEs can apply for. These themes, and their problem-solution statements, are:

Energy & Environment

Current Projects Include:

Our Energy & Environment theme is focused on enhancing the energy management of our buildings, the quality of air we breathe, and the wider cleanliness and sustainability of our city.

Building RetrofitWe are connecting closed systems via sensors and cloud services to provide on-demand response equipment, as well as energy and environmental data that will improve occupancy well-being and deliver significant cost savings. This is particularly important as we transform Manchester into a smart city, where the focus is on connecting existing assets rather than building a smart city from scratch. Smart Facilities ManagementWe are working to help commercial landlords as well as local authorities who are managing public spaces, including libraries and town halls, by enhancing the facilities management process in areas such as building regulation compliance, workspace occupancy / utilisation optimisation, and cleaning. Next Generation Building Management SystemEnergy storage forms an important part of the next-generation building management systems chain, which ultimately requires smart buildings and a smart grid to deliver a smart city. Through this deployment we are exploring how to better manage energy consumption, by reassessing the storage of energy, reducing reliance on the energy grid at peak times and being able to accurately predict next day energy demand.

Air Quality MonitoringWe are working to demonstrate how providing high-quality air monitoring devices can deliver real-time data at a reasonable cost. This can be collated to help make decisions that have a lasting and positive impact on traffic and transportation, health and exercise as well as the environment.

The Open Innovation BriefUse data from existing and external data sources to create a non-intrusive and cost-effective solution that optimises energy consumption and reduces carbon emissions in commercial buildings.

The Real-World Commercial Benefit of the BriefWe want to reduce energy consumption and therefore costs and carbon emissions using smart technology or a data driven information system.

Available Data on the CityVerve PlatformAlongside data from the Transport & Travel, and Health & Social themes, the CityVerve platform contains Energy & Environmental-specific data that may be useful in your solution. All of this data is available via the CityVerve API. See the data dictionary at the end of this document that shows the available data. Please note this is subject to change and additions.

We’re particularly interested to see how you can use a variety of variables (either from data specific to Energy & Environment or data from across themes) to power any aspect of your solution.

You may be able to request additional data that your solution requires which we will either help you source or create to demonstrate your MVP.

Page 9Page 8

Page 6: CityVerve · healthcare and transport, and more engaged and empowered citizens. And this isn’t just for Manchester: CityVerve aims to create a blueprint for smart cities worldwide.

Alternate Data SourcesAs well as data available on the CityVerve data platform, your solution can use data from additional open data sources, proprietary data that you own, data created from your own hardware or source by yourself externally.

WildcardDoes your solution not quite fit the brief? Apply as a wildcard option – We’re very interested in additional IoT, data driven or smart solutions in the area of Energy & Environment or building management.

DeliverablesAs part of the programme, you will be creating:

1 - An MVP of your solution that will be exhibited on Demonstration Day to the smart cities industry, project partners and the media.

2 - A value proposition to the Energy & Environment sector supported by a business case and sustainable revenue model.

3 - A working prototype to be on display at Mi-IDEA located in Manchester Science Partnerships Central Campus.

- Jane Jacobs

Health & Social CareOur Health & Social Care theme is focused on reducing pressures on Accident and Emergency (A&E) admissions and hospital stays, decreasing health inequalities and improving health outcomes through driving self-care and earlier public health interventions to tackle costly chronic conditions upstream.

Current Projects Include:Chronic Condition ManagementBy deploying IoT technologies such as smart inhalers and in-home sensors to monitor medication adherence and physical activity for mild to moderately ill chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients, we are aiming to alleviate pressure on healthcare services through increased engagement in self-care and reduced service demand.

Community WellnessWe are working to demonstrate how providing mechanisms and IoT devices can encourage people to become more active through digitally delivered context-aware “nudges” designed to engender behavioural change. Based on data inputs such as weather, traffic levels, air quality and current location, we will develop a programme for citizens that primarily focuses on them getting out and exploring their city and local environment rather than instructing people to exercise.

Neighbourhood Support TeamsWe are working to apply IoT technologies and deliver a set of fully connected services to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of neighbourhood support teams. Today, these teams typically rely on analogue paper-based solutions which are poorly placed to meet the challenges of growing demand and shrinking budgets. Our aim is to enable enhanced decision making and deliver higher quality care that is more efficient, effective, and can be scaled up without a proportionate increase in staffing.

The Open Innovation BriefCreate a solution using data collected from home monitoring systems that enables triggered intervention and care for the elderly to ease the reliance on healthcare providers.

The Real-World Commercial Benefit of the BriefTo ease the reliance on healthcare providers by using smart technology to alert urgent response / intervention teams when required.

”Human centered innovations will support the development of a Smart and Sustainable City”

- Dr. Philippe Bouvier

Travel & TransportOur Travel & Transport theme is focused on delivering more efficient, reliable and attractive public transport, reducing congestion and enhancing public safety.

Current ProjectsTalkative Bus SystemFrom ‘flag and pole’ to interactive locations, we are rethinking the bus stop, to reflect and enrich the environment and communities in which they are located. Through the use of technology, including location-based services and mobile apps, the bus stops will deliver location-relevant content. People will have the ability to ‘check-in’ to their bus stop, to let bus operators know they are waiting for their service, leading to a more responsive service and enhanced traveller experience.

City ConciergeWe are developing wayfinding services based on a city user interface for Manchester, which will integrate transportation and visitor services to allow users to make informed choices regarding the way they travel. Using mapping data down to street furniture level, this wayfinding service will provide a level of accuracy previously unseen and of particular value for those with limited accessibility i.e. the disabled or parents with pushchairs. City Concierge will bring together the user experience across all transport modes, communications channels and media.

Road Safety Through the deployment of IoT based telematics devices - aligned to socially and environmentally beneficial commercial applications - we are exploring how we can improve road safety across Greater Manchester. We are working to implement deployments which can improve the road safety of drivers of all ages including young, elderly and other ‘high-risk’ groups such as taxis, community transport and delivery vehicles.

Sensing Trams Through using real-time data collated via IoT devices on the tram network, we are working to accurately measure occupancy and provide travel information to citizens and visitors; ensuring the tram network can be a demand-responsive operation. Another focus area is to provide high-speed connectivity in trams to enhance passenger journeys, making them more fun and productive as well as enable passengers to provide feedback to help the local authorities to improve the service.

Smart Traffic MonitoringCreating intuitive and efficient traffic services; we are working to simplify Manchester’s city services, to make the region more sustainable and enhance the quality of life for citizens. To further monitor traffic and reduce pollution in the city, cameras will be linked up to the IoT network to gain a better understanding of the type of vehicles that are moving around the city and how congestion points can be addressed.

Next Gen Cycle SharingThrough the deployment of IoT technology connected to bicycles, we are working to encourage citizens within the city to use bikes as an alternative method of transport. We are specifically focusing this on commuters and local transportation of goods, thereby reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality. In addition, data gathered about cycle usage patterns will enable the city to optimise its investment in cycling infrastructure. We acknowledge that bike sharing schemes currently implemented elsewhere in Europe are expensive to install and maintain, making them difficult to replicate in cities without significant financial commitment. Consequently this use case will be investigating the potential of various operational and commercial models based on IoT-enabled bikes, including crowd-sourced and crowd-maintained approaches.

Smart Parking We are analysing different modes of transport to assess whether the city is successful in moving people from private to public transport and cycles. As part of this use case we will provide parking space tracking by providing Manchester citizens with parking availability based on their driving route. It means drivers will be notified of nearby parking spaces which are close to public transport such as buses and trains, to help reduce congestion by encouraging them to continue their journey on such modes of transport. This application of technology will also provide car park owners with insights on usage and predicting car park availability throughout the day.

Additionally, this use case will also look to implement a booking system for specific-use parking spaces, allowing for EV recharging spaces for example to be monitored so citizens can check for availability and book spaces in advance. Through such an implementation we hope to promote the use of sustainable EV cars by making it easier for drivers to incorporate the charging of these vehicles into their day-to-day lives.
