Complete with gable paintings, the covered, medieval Chapel Bridge forms the centrepiece of
Lucerne’s townscape and is considered to be one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe.
A further landmark of the town is the Museggmauer, a wall which, with the exception only of one of its
towers, has been preserved in its original, well-fortified state.
Historic houses decorated with frescoes line the picturesque town squares as they do the
‘Weinmarkt’ square in the car-free old town. Lucerne is a city of town squares and churches. The
Jesuit church dating from the 17th century is regarded as Switzerland’s first sacral Baroque building
LucerneLucerne, the gateway to central Switzerland, sited on Lake Lucerne, is embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama. Thanks to its attractions, its souvenir and watch shops, the beautiful lakeside setting and the nearby excursion mountains of the Rigi, Pilatus and Stanserhorn, the town is a destination for many travel groups and individuals on their journey through central Switzerland.

and the twin towers of the Hofkirche form an integral part of the townscape. The figure of a dying lion
which was hewn from the face of rock in remembrance of the heroic death of Swiss guards killed
during an attack on the Tuileries in 1792 is one of the best-known monuments in Switzerland. And
with its 112-metre-long Bourbaki panorama, Lucerne possesses one of the world’s few maintained,
mammoth circular paintings.
Tradition and modernity stand side-by-side with ease in Lucerne, as the town has also earned a
reputation for itself with innovative design. The futuristic Culture and Convention Centre (KKL),
designed by leading French architect Jean Nouvel, is one the architectural highlights of the town. The
KKL is also a landmark of «Lucerne: Festival City» and venue for a wide variety of cultural events
throughout the year.
Lucerne is the ideal starting point for many excursions to the highlights of central Switzerland. A trip
up one of Lucerne’s regional mountains, the Pilatus or the Rigi – the queen of mountains – is a must.
But excursions up onto the Stanserhorn, the Bürgenstock or a steamship cruise on Lake Lucerne
with its many bends and arms are certainly no less worthy. The Wilhelm Tell Express originates in
Lucerne and ferries its passengers to the foot of the Gotthard pass via Lake Lucerne and then
continues by rail into Ticino, south of the Alpine ridge. The «cherry road» leads from Lucerne through
the landscape of cheery trees and kirsch.

A perfect day in Lucerne.Lucerne has everything you could wish for in a city. A picturesque lakeside setting, against an impressive mountain backdrop. Architectural gems, such as the celebrated KKL Luzern by avant-garde architect Jean Nouvel. But also centuries-old sights, such as the most-photographed subject in Switzerland, the Chapel Bridge – and of course top-quality museums, theatres and festivals.
10:00The grand finale: the “Golden Round Trip”
At 8.30am the first gondola glides out of Kriens up to the heights.
Half an hour later you reach the summit: the 2,132-metre Pilatus,
a mountain swathed in legend that offers breathtaking views of
Lake Lucerne, the Alps and the city of Lucerne itself. You then
ride on the world’s steepest funicular down to Alpnachstad, before
gliding on a boat back to Lucerne. The popular “Golden Round
Trip” is without doubt one of the region’s tourist highlights – and guarantees a morning packed with
adventure.
11:00A well-deserved coffee break
At every step in the beautiful city of Lucerne, new treats are
waiting to be discovered. But all this beauty can take its toll: it’s
important to give yourself plenty of breaks, too. A good place to
stop is the Brasserie of the Ameron Hotel Flora, which has
become a popular spot for visitors who enjoy unfussy style
twinned with good quality. That’s true of the menu and everything
else here – starting with the deliciously seductive aroma of morning coffee.
12:00A taste of the world
Just a hop from the Brasserie Flora, the cosmopolitan World
Café at the KKL is a favourite among city gourmets and snacking
foodies. The global gastronomic journey on offer takes in
everything from the traditional local “Luzerner Chügelipastete” pie
to fresh fruit and vegetable juices at the health-food bar and
Vietnamese Pad Pet Kung out of a wok – all served up with lovely
views of the city and lake.
13:00No. 1 in Switzerland
Getting people moving: the Swiss Museum of Transport is the
country’s most-visited museum. Rightly so, for it brings the
development of transport and communication thrillingly to life for
visitors of all ages. Other highlights include the film theatre, the
planetarium and the Swissarena – a vast 1:20,000 aerial
photograph of Switzerland you can walk across.

15:00Tea at the Palace Afternoon tea is still celebrated in grand style at the Palace
Luzern. Every day in the bar and lobby, this traditional hotel
serves tea and cake, English-style – but with Swiss ingredients.
At weekends, the five o’clock tea with champagne, scones, finger
sandwiches and patisserie is a veritable “apéro riche”.
15:30Picasso’s second home
The world-famous Rosengart Collection brings together important
bodies of work by Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee, as well as
rarities by more than 20 other artists from the Impressionist and
classic modern periods. This museum is a must for art lovers,
and an important treasure for a city that is proud to present its
cultural attractions to a wide audience.
17:00Lucerne’s festival bar
Character, individuality and a welcoming atmosphere: the
Schweizerhof, family-owned for five generations, offers the
ultimate in hotel service in a historic building with period décor –
and, in the fashionable bar, top live acts as well as daily piano
music. Home-made finger food is served with the wide choice of
drinks. Welcome to the festival hotel!
18:00Dine in all-round style
A hotel is not just a hotel – certainly not in the case of “The Hotel”.
This luxury boutique hotel comes from the creative workshop of
the celebrated architect Jean Nouvel, who has already
bequeathed the city a major monument in the form of the KKL
culture and convention centre. The Hotel also boasts a superb
restaurant: Bam Bou, which has been awarded 14 GaultMillau
points – and whose French-Asian fusion cuisine has made it one of the undisputed highlights of the
local gourmet scene.
19:30Music to the ears The architecture alone is breathtaking: KKL, Jean Nouvel’s
showpiece with its elegant projecting roof, is a masterpiece of
urban design. The interior is devoted to offering culture,
conferences and cuisine of the highest standard, while the 1,800-
seat concert hall is one of the world’s finest – and the perfect
venue for one of the most prestigious and historic of all musical
events, the Lucerne Festival. This offers world-class classical and contemporary music three times
a year: for six weeks during the “Lucerne Festival in Summer”, in November at the “Lucerne Festival
at the Piano”, and finally for the “Lucerne Festival at Easter”.
22:00A winning formula Lucky prospects: the Grand Casino Luzern, located by the lake
on Europe’s longest waterfront promenade, offers a stylish setting
for à-la-carte entertainment – including not only gaming tables
and slot machines but also a wide range of live performances and
superb cuisine. Switzerland’s most beautiful casino, a neo-
Baroque gem, offers a variety of modern venues, from The Club,
a minimalist bar, to the magnificent Casineum, used to stage all manner of music and theatre
productions, parties and other events – and which from 11pm hosts selected club nights featuring
the region’s leading DJs.
24:00Hotel Waldstätterhof
Quaintly traditional on the outside, wonderfully comfortable on the
inside, the Waldstätterhof is an absolute gem of a hotel. Located
right beside Lucerne’s railway station, it is both contemporary and
stylish for business, and a charming base for a relaxed weekend
in the city. The bright and spacious Comfort rooms and Business
rooms guarantee an excellent night’s sleep.

The Hotel A small corner property built in 1907 has been transformed to the
first luxury boutique hotel in Switzerland by none other than
French star architect Jean Nouvel. It combines spirituality with
elegance and timeless design. Having designed every piece
himself, the furnishing concept bears Nouvel’s hallmark: vertical
lines are drawn in stainless steel and horizontal ones in wood.
The Hotel describes a new way of communicating with people and makes its own statement about
today’s world.

Bar: The Blue The BLUE sets new design measures in the city of Lucerne. In an
intentionally controversial manner Chinese-Japanese decoration
elements are combined with items reminding the pomp of the

from Tokyo contrast with a large oak wood panel and a black
crystal glass chandelier. The connecting element is the
ingeniously applied colour blue, accentuating the dramaturgy of this new, urban lounge-bar.

Bourbaki Panorama
Inside the round building, which underwent a thorough renovation
in the year 2000, you will find the impressive circular painting
which Edouard Castres painted in 1881. It is 10 m high and 112
m in circumference and depicts a memorable episode from the
Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 in which the French Army,
under General Bourbaki, crossed into Switzerland. Since it was
renovated, the Bourbaki Panorama Lucerne has developed into a unique cultural and meeting center
with restaurants, cinemas, museum, an art gallery and shops.

A stroll through Lucerne’s Middle Ages
With bells marking the daily routine, the citizens would swear an
annual oath of allegiance and craftsmen ply their trade in the
alleys; towers, bridges and walls were erected, religious orders
established themselves and mercenaries and tradesmen shaped
the city. Women in medieval costumes bring the past to life, with
its smells, sights, sounds and sensations.

Sculptures
Glacier Garden, Lion's Monument, Mirror Labyrinth
The Dying Lion of Lucerne was hewn out of stone on site and
commemorates the fallen Swiss guardsmen who died in 1792
during the French Revolution. The Glacier Garden exhibits glacier
potholes from the last Ice Age, which occured 20,000 years ago,
as well as fossils of mussels and palm leaves of the subtropical
sea region which existed 20 million years ago. The exhibits are
complemented by interactive stations and multimedia presentations. The landscape is literally at
your feet when you view the world's oldest mountain chain relief of Central Switzerland.
The mirror labyrinth "Alhambra", which has 90 mirrors and was originally built in 1896 for the Swiss
National Exhibition in Geneva, is also located in the Glacier Garden.

Fritschibrunnen The Fritschi fountain was erected in 1918 in place of an older
fountain, not dedicated to Fritschi, and was based on plans by the
archivist of the Safran guild, August am Rhyn. On the column of
the fountain are splendid masks of Fritschi and his wife and the
faces of the nursemaid and the servant. Four fools' masks spew
water from goats' horns into the hexagonal trough. The column of
the fountain bears the statue of a standard-bearer.
