AC Connections

AC ConnectionBefore you plug your CinemaRhapsody into an AC outlet, make certain that the voltageselector switch is set to theproper position. Since ADAtests each unit prior toshipping, if the VoltageSelector Switch is in thecorrect position, the CinemaRhapsody’s safety fuse willalso be the correct value.

If you are altering the VoltageSelector Switch, you will alsomost likely need to change thesafety fuse. Both the VoltageSelector Switch and the SafetyFuse are located on theCinema Rhapsody’s left side(when viewed from the front.)

Before You BeginAs you remove the Cinema Rhapsody from its packaging, inspectthe condition of the component prior to proceeding with the follow-ing steps for AC connection. In the event that the Cinema Rhap-sody appears to have suffered cosmetic damage due to shipping, please contact your Authorized ADA Dealer immediately and do notproceed to plug the unit into an AC outlet.

CautionBefore plugging your Cinema Rhapsody into an AC outlet, checkthe Voltage Selector Switch setting, located on the units left side(when looking at the Cinema Rhapsody from the front) and makecertain that the selector is set to your appropriate voltage position. For U.S. customers, this setting should be 115V. For internationalcustomers, you may need to set this switch to 230V.

Fuse ValuesFor U.S. customers or international customers also operating on a115V AC system, the fuse value of the Cinema Rhapsody should bea 1 Amp Slow Blow fuse. For international customers operating ona 230V AC system, the fuse value should be 1/2 Amp Slow Blow. The safety fuse is located next to the Voltage selector switch on theCinema Rhapsody’s left side (when viewing it from the front.) Typi-cally, if you receive the Cinema Rhapsody with the voltage selectoralready set correctly for your local voltage system, the correspond-ing fuse value has also been inserted to match the voltage setting. If you are altering the Voltage Selector Switch setting, you will needto also replace the fuse with the appropriate value fuse.

Or Sub Output ToPowered Subwoofer

Audio ConnectionsThe Cinema Rhapsody’s Audio Outputs are clearly marked in a white field on the back of the CinemaRhapsody. ADA strongly suggests not using directional interconnects that lift the grounds. If you areconnecting the audio outputs to a six channel power amplifier (which will also power the subwoofer),use the diagram below. This diagram includes ADA’s critically acclaimed PTM-6150 Six Channel THXPower Amplifier. While you may decide to vary the input arrangement if you are using a PTM-6150,the following input arrangement will cause the amplifier’s front panel LED display to spread outwardfrom Channel 3, the center channel speaker. If you are using a self-powered subwoofer, you willconnect the Cinema Rhapsody’s SUB Output directly to the subwoofer. If you are using a self pow-ered subwoofer with the PTM-6150, you may opt to “Y” split the SUB output so as to illuminate chan-nel six of the PTM-6150.

Amplifier AC ConnectionsThe Cinema Rhapsody incorporates a switched AC outlet which is rated at 10 Amps. This is powerfulenough for ADA’s PTM-6150 Six Channel THX Power Amplifier. Several other power amplifiers couldalso be plugged directly into this switched AC outlet. However, if the power amplifier is going to drawmore than 10 Amps (such as ADA’s MPA-500 Five Channel THX High-Power Amplifier), you will wantto avoid using this switched AC outlet. To connect the power amplifier to the Cinema Rhapsody, youwill need to use an EIC Male to EIC Female AC Cord. These AC cords are also used for computersand computer monitors and are available in stores that support computer and AC products.

Introduction - Front Panel Controls & Displays

OverviewThe Cinema Rhapsody isfactory set for optimumoperation. This sectiondetails the front panel featuresof the Cinema Rhapsody. Allcomponent functions can beoperated through the fivecontrol knobs located on theunits front panel. The threefront panel displays are alsoexplained in this section.

WelcomeThe Cinema Rhapsody is the world’s most advanced audio videosurround sound preamplifier. It is also configured “Out Of TheBox” for optimum operation. While it is designed to be easy tosetup and operate, ADA strongly recommends spending some timefamiliarizing yourself with the units many functions and features. Forthose who wish to customize their home theater system, the Cin-ema Rhapsody is also equipped to be configured to operate ideallyin almost any environment and with many varying source compo-nents. While the connection of components and accessories arediscussed in the following sections, this area will explain the frontpanel features and basic operation commands of the CinemaRhapsody’s front panel. The text found in italic type in this manual’smargins will act as a quick reference when reviewing these materi-als.

FeaturesThe Cinema Rhapsody acts as both an input selector and surround sound decoder. It is capable ofdecoding Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital (AC-3), and DTS encoded formats and also providing LucasfilmTHX enhancements and filters to Dolby Digital, DTS, & Pro Logic. While the Cinema Rhapsody canautomatically detect between Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic, and Dolby Digital/Dolby Pro Logic(both decoding formats are used when playing two-channel encoded DVD discs typically older mov-ies available on DVD that are not mixed in six channels), the option to engage either full THX en-hancements or only THX Re-EQ must be manually set on the Cinema Rhapsody. The Cinema Rhap-sody also provides several additional modes ideal for music playback. There are additional settingsthat permit the Cinema Rhapsody to also operate in home theaters where a full six channel speakerarray may only be partially implemented (i.e. no subwoofer and/or no center channel). Furthermore, the Cinema Rhapsody also permits each channel to be set to its own volume level with respect to allother channels as well as have its own delay setting. These features and more are discussed in theupcoming sections.

Mode Indicators & How They Function

LFEDIGITAL

LFEDIGITAL

The Cinema Rhapsody features six indicators on the left side of itsfront panel. They provide a visual indication of decoding mode, thepresence of an LFE (“.1” of “5.1”), and if a digital input is accessed. While you can manually select modes, these indicators are an idealway to determine status when the Cinema Rhapsody is in the “Auto-Mode Detection” state.

Three of the indicators are used to providestatus of the decoding mode, Dolby ProLogic, Dolby Digital (AC-3), or DTS. Typi-cally, only one of these indicators is on atany one time. If a mode other than a Dolbyor DTS mode is selected, none of the indi-cators will be lit.

In the event you are playing a two-channeldigital source that was encoded in AC-3 (i.e.an older movie on a DVD), the CinemaRhapsody will engage both Dolby Digitaldecoding to extract the from the DVD andthen Dolby Pro Logic to decode the twochannel mix for playback. Both indicators will be on in this case.

The Cinema Rhapsody also permits the ad-dition of full-blown THX enhancements toDolby Digital, DTS, or Dolby Pro Logic de-coding formats. When THX is selected toenhance these modes, the indicator will be lit.

Please note, the Cinema Rhapsody does not detect the presence ofTHX as it is not an encoded process but rather an enhancementprocess. Use THX mode for any cinematic sources. THX certifica-tion to video tapes, laser discs, and DVDs is intended to ensure thatthe material was properly mixed and transferred and does not di-rectly relate to the THX certification of the Cinema Rhapsody. Toengage either full-blown THX or THX Re-EQ, you must do so manu-ally on the Cinema Rhapsody.

The Cinema Rhapsody has two additionalindicators that detail information for digitalsources. The Digital indicator will illumi-nate when a digital input is accessed. TheLFE indicator will light up if the digital source

material has an independent six channel encoded in it for bass or“Low Frequency Effects” (LFE). If a source material (i.e. AC-3 orDTS CD, Laserdisc or DVD), is truly “5.1” ( “.1” being the LFE orsubwoofer signal), the LFE indicator will light up.

Mode IndicatorsThe Cinema Rhapsodyfeatures three modeindicators that illuminatewhen either Dolby Digital(AC-3), Dolby Pro Logic, orDTS decoding formats areengaged. Typically, only oneof these three indicators areon at any one time. However, when playing a digitallyformatted source material (i.e.DVD) of an older movie that isonly mixed with two-channelaudio, both the Dolby Digitaland Dolby Pro Logic willilluminate indicating that bothdecoding formats are beingimplemented. If a decodingmode other than DTS, ProLogic, or Dolby Digital isselected, none of theindicators will be on.

THX EnhancementsThe THX indicator willilluminate only when THX hasbeen selected in conjunctionwith Dolby Digital, DTS, orDolby Pro Logic modes. THXis not auto-detected but mustbe intentionally engaged.

Digital & LFE IndicatorsThe Digital indicator will be litwhen a digital input isselected. The LFE indicatorwill be lit when a digital inputcontains a distinct subwoofersignal (only in DTS & AC-3).

Mode Selection & Dolby Digital Mode Descriptions

The Cinema Rhapsody provides 22 modes for film, television, andmusic playback. This section will detail these modes and their func-tions. Because the Cinema Rhapsodycan also automatically detect the en-coding method of the selected source,it will automatically engage the bestpossible decoding mode for the se-lected components output. While theCinema Rhapsody can automaticallyswitch between Dolby Digital, DTS, andDolby Pro Logic, enhancement fea-tures such as THX, Re-EQ, and otherDolby Digital options will need to be en-gaged using the Mode Selector.

1. Dial In New ModeTurn the Mode Selector knobuntil the second line of theLCD display reads the modeyou wish to select. LASER/DVD 1AC3 ULTRA

Dolby Digital Modes (AC-3)

Ultra Maximum Dynamic Range- This is the most dynamic of allthe AC-3 modes in that dialoguenormalization takes place in theCinema Rhapsody’s analog do-

main rather than the digital domain. AC-3 Ultra mode reads infor-mation flags contained in the DVD or laser disc and uses these soft-ware specific parameters to set the dialogue normalization after digitalprocessing takes place. The HDR and LDR scales are preset at “0”(Full Off) but can be scaled individually.

Dialogue Normalization - As you change Dolby Digital (AC-3) in-puts, the display will flash a Dialogue Normalization value on the topline (DIALOG +4 DB) and the bottom line will display DIALOG NORM.This information is directly read off of the bit stream from the DolbyDigital software. The Cinema Rhapsody uses this information toautomatically adjust various levels internal to the Cinema Rhapsodyfor consistent sound levels. This display will appear when you ei-ther change inputs on the Cinema Rhapsody or the software youare listening to. This display only appears if the software’s levelrequire manual adjustment. If you wish to use this number as avolume reference level, you can use the Master Volume Control toraise or lower the systems volume level accordingly.

As an example, if one DVD playsand no Dialogue Normalization levelappears and then a second DVD isplayed with a Dialogue Normaliza-tion level of +4 dB, reducing theMaster Volume Level by 4 dB, will make the second DVD play asloud as the first.

AC3 MAX ModeThis mode offers maximumdynamic range for dialoguenormalization taking place inthe digital domain.

AC3 NIGHT ModeThe least dynamic of all AC-3modes, AC3 Night mode isideal for viewing movies whenloud bangs or other impactrelated sounds wouldnormally be too loud.

AC3 THX ModeThis mode provides full THXenhancements.

AC3 RE-EQThis mode offers only THXRe-equalization for the frontchannels.

Normal Dynamic Range - Thismode engages the AC-3 “LineMode” coupled with the High Level(HDR) and Low Level (LDR) reso-lution factors preset to “255” or FullOn. While the option of Line Modeis fixed, the HDR & LDR factorscan be scaled.

Maximum Dynamic Range - Thismode uses the AC-3 Line Modesetting as found in AC3 Standard, however the HDR and LDR fac-tors are fixed at “0” or Full Off. Forplay back of films, this mode maybe preferred over AC3 Ultra in thatsome compression schemes aredesigned to recreate the movietheater environment in the home.

Minimum Dynamic Range - Thismode uses the AC-3 RF ModMode setting. Also, the HDR andLDR factors are fixed at “255” orFull On. This mode is ideal whenviewing a film at a time were thebangs may be too loud or thesofter sounds too low. In AC3Night, the audio range is narrowedbetween loud and soft sounds.

THX Processing - THX Process-ing includes several enhance-ments: Re-EQ, Timbre Matching, and Adaptive Decorrelation. These make the sound more likethe original film sound experience.

THX Re-Equalization Only - Thismode is used to provide partialTHX enhancements focused onthe adjustment of sound levels forthe front three channels. Typically, films are mixed to standards which result in over bright sound in thehome. Re-EQ compensates for this factor in the home.

TRUE MONO Mode - When play-ing AC-3, this mode will make amono center channel. Also, whenplaying PCM, this mode will makea mono center channel.

DTS Direct Mode - Much likeDolby Digital AC-3, DTS is a 5.1digitally encoded matrix. Thismode provides DTS decoding. Please note, that most DTS soft-ware, in the form of CDs and La-ser Discs, do not contain any stan-dard two channel audio tracks. Ifyou are playing DTS software andare getting nothing but noise, youare most likely not in a DTS de-coding mode. Please note, in thePro Setup Menu, the delays, basslimiter, and THX enhancementsare disabled and are controlled bythe main processor. This mode isthe purist of all DTS modes as itwas designed to deliver 5.1 play-back as DTS has intended.

DTS Cinema Mode - This modeprovides DTS decoding with theenhancements from the CinemaRhapsody’s delay and bass man-agement settings. Please note, most DTS software that is en-coded onto PCM audio channels(DTS CD’s and Laser Discs) do notcontain any standard two channelaudio tracks. If you are playingDTS software and are gettingnothing by noise, you are mostlikely not in a DTS decoding mode.

DTS THX Mode - This mode is thesame as the DTS Cinema modewith THX Enhancements added tothe surround processing.

DTS RE-EQ Mode - This mode isthe same at the DTS Cinemamode with only RE-EQ added tothe surround mix. RE-EQ is oneof the aspects of the full THX En-hancements.

LASER/DVD 1PROLOG RE-EQ

Dolby Pro Logic Mode - Thismode is used for most film or TVsource materials that are not en-coded in either Dolby Digital orDTS. Pro Logic uses a 2-chan-nel audio mix and plays back acenter channel mix and surroundchannel mix in addition to theright and left audio channels.

Pro Logic THX Mode - THXProcessing includes several en-hancements: Re-EQ, TImbreMatching, and AdaptiveDecorrelation. These make thesound more like the original filmsound experience..

THX Re-Equalization Only -This mode is used to providepartial THX enhancements fo-cused on the adjustment ofsound levels for the front threechannels. Typically, films aremixed with the front three chan-nels adjusted to compensate forthe film screen they need toproject through. Re-EQ com-pensates for this factor in thehome.

Auto Mode On - The Auto Modeis not so much a mode but rathera state in which the CinemaRhapsody checks for Dolby Digi-tal, DTS, or Dolby Pro Logicplayback. Since there are sev-eral mode options for each, AC-3, DTS, and Pro Logic, the Cin-ema Rhapsody will engage thelast version of these modes usedwhen auto-detecting.

Out Of The Box Setup

The “Out Of The Box” Setupuses the Cinema Rhapsody’sdefault setup program. Sincenot all source componentshave the same audio outputs, this section offers differentconnection possibilities totake into consideration themany componentconnections.

To best proceed with theconnection of yourcomponents, simply examinethe units that you have andcompare the component’soutput jack to the illustration.

Please note, that the CinemaRhapsody’s “Out Of The Box”setup is designed for quickand easy connection of themost common sourcecomponents used in today’shome theater systems. Thus, this setup does not optimizeall of the audio inputs since aCD player, second laser discplayer, or DSS receiver mayfeature a digital output. If allthree devices offered a digitaloutput, you would be able tobypass these componentsanalog connections noted inthe “Out Of The Box” setupand have three additionalanalog inputs available forother devices. If the videogame or computer were toalso offer a digital output, youcould then connect as manyas fifteen devices to theCinema Rhapsody.

The chart on the followingpage details the “Out Of TheBox” Setup.

The Cinema Rhapsody is preprogrammed to permit quick and easyconnection of your audio and video components. This section de-tails the options available taking into consideration that not all sourcecomponents have each and every output jack present. Since theCinema Rhapsody is fully equipped with an abundance of audioinputs of varying types: 8 Analog R&L Stereo (RCA) Inputs, 4 DigitalCoax (RCA), and 3 TOS-Link Digital Optical Inputs, the “Out Of TheBox” configuration should cover most any home theater system.

Please note, the Cinema Rhapsody is also fully programmable.Should you care to customize your system, you can do so by follow-ing the items in the section titled “Custom Setup”.

The Cinema Rhapsody offers fifteen “Input Labels”. An Input Labelis the name of the component followed by a sequence number (i.e.LASER/DVD 1, LASERDISC 2, DVD PLAYER 3). Each inputlabel is capable of being customized including the way the compo-nents name appears in the display. Again, you can customize theway the Input Labels read in the “Custom Setup” section of thismanual. During a typical “Out of the Box” setup, you will most likelyuse only a portion of the Input Labels that are preprogrammed in thefactory. The input labels appear as follows:

LASER/DVD 1 Used for combination LD/DVD Player.LASERDISC 2 Used for a second laser disc player or

a laser disc without a digital out.DVD PLAYER 3 Used for a DVD Player.VCR 4 Used for VCR.DSS/SAT 5 Used for a DSS or Satellite Receiver.CABLE/TV 6 Used for cable box or TV’s audio output.CD PLAYER 7 Used for a CD player.TUNER 8 Used for a radio tuner.CASSETTE 9 Used for a cassette deck.AUXILIARY 10 Used for any A/V component.CAMCORDER 11 Used for a Camcorder.VIDEOGAME 12 Used for video games.COMPUTER 13 Used for a computers output.PREAMP 14 Used for connection of an existing preamp.MULTIROOM 15 Used for connection of the audio output

from a multi-room audio system.

The Cinema Rhapsody in its “Out Of The Box” setup, will only per-mit the connection of ten (10) components. Inputs 10-15 arepreprogrammed to the same audio and video input and as such, only one such device can be connected without going into the “Cus-tom Setup”.

In the “Out Of The Box” setup, the Input Labels show a nine charac-ter component name followed by a number. The first 8 inputs corre-spond to buttons 1-8 on a One-For-All Six IR remote control thatmay be shipped with some units.

Laser Disc or Combination Laser Disc/DVD Player

The Cinema Rhapsody is preprogrammed to permit you to easilyconnect a combination laser disc & DVD player. You will need tomake two audio connections in for this unit to play the following:

Dolby Digital Laser Discs, Pro Logic Laser Discs, DTS Laser Discs,Dolby Digital DVDs, 2 Channel Dolby Digital DVDs, Stereo CDs,and DTS CDs.

All connections should use a 75 Ohm coaxial cable. If none areavailable, standard RCA video interconnects will work.

Connection 1 - Laser Disc Player’s PCM/AC-3 Digital Output - Youwill need to connect the combi-players digital output that is markedby both PCM and AC-3 to the Cinema Rhapsody’s #1 Digital AudioInput (Orange RCA Connector). This input will pass audio for allAC-3 playback from a laser disc.

Connection 2 - Laser Disc Player’s Video Output - You will need toconnect the laser disc player’s video output (Composite Video) tothe Cinema Rhapsody’s #1 Video Input.

Connection 3 (Optional) - Laser Disc Player’s S-Video Output - Youmay also choose to connect the S-Video (Super Video) output ofthe laser disc player to the Cinema Rhapsody S-Video #1 input. This will require a special super video cable. Please note, if yourprojector or TV does not have a super video input, you will not needto make this connection as the Cinema Rhapsody does not crossconvert S-Video to Composite Video.

The diagram to the right details all of these connections. If yourcombi-player does not have an RCA style digital audio output forPCM/AC-3, it may have an optical digital audio output for PCM/AC-3 playback. In this case you will need to alter the LASER/DVD 1input. The steps to change the input from a digital to an optical inputis discussed at the bottom of the following page.

If your laser disc player does not have a built-in AC-3 RF demodula-tor, then you will need to add one to the system in order to playbacklaser discs in AC-3. ADA provides the RFD-1 AC-3 RF Demodulatorfor this purpose. Please contact your Authorized ADA Dealer formore information regarding the RFD-1.

Please note, that if you are using an external RF demodulator forplaypack of AC-3 laserdiscs, the Cinema Rhapsody’s Auto Modefunction will not automatically select the input connected to the RFDemodulator. You will need to create an input for the RFdemodulator’s output and manually select this input when viewingAC-3 encoded laser discs.

The “Out Of The Box” setuppresumes that yourcombination laser disc/DVDplayer has the followingoutputs:

Digital Audio PCM/AC-3 ForBoth DVD and Laser DiscPlayback

Coax (RCA) Type Output

Video Output(Composite RCA Type)

Your combi-player may alsoinclude a super video output. Please note, the CinemaRhapsody does not cross mixvideo signals. As such, if youwish to use a component’s S-Video output, you will need toconnect an S-Video cablefrom the Cinema Rhapsody tothe TV or Projector.

Use the diagram on thefollowing page to make yourcombi-player connections.ADA suggests using a quality75Ω Coaxial cable. In theevent that none are available, you can use standard RCAinterconnects.

If your combi-player does nothave an RCA Type DigitalAudio PCM/AC-3 Coax outputbut rather has only an OpticalDigital PCM/AC-3 output, youwill need to change theprogramming for this input. These steps are discussed atthe bottom of the followingpage.

Laser Disc Player without a Digital Output (or 2nd Laser)

The Cinema Rhapsody is preprogrammed to permit you to easilyconnect a laser disc player that does not have a digital audio output. This laser disc may or may not have an AC-3 RF output. If it doeshave an AC-3 RF output, you will need to make two audio connec-tions in for this unit to play the following:

Dolby Digital Laser Discs, Pro Logic Laser Discs, and Stereo CDs.

If you are using this input for a second laser disc that has a digitalaudio output (to also play DTS laser discs and CDs), you will needto custom configure this input. This is discussed at the bottom ofthe following page.

All connections should use a 75 Ohm coaxial cable. If none areavailable, standard RCA video interconnects will work.

Connection 1 - Laser Disc Player’s Stereo Audio Output - You willneed to connect the laser disc player’s stereo (analog) audio output(R&L RCA type) to the Cinema Rhapsody’s Audio Input #2.

Connection 2 - Laser Disc Player’s Video Output - You will need toconnect the laser disc player’s video output (Composite Video) tothe Cinema Rhapsody’s #2 Video Input.

Connection 3 (Optional & Requires RF Demodulator [RFD-1]) - La-ser Disc Player’s AC-3 RF Output - You will need to connect theLaser disc players “AC-3•RF Output” (LD for Laser Disc) to an AC-3RF Demodulator.

Connection 4 (Must Accompany Step 3) - RF Demodulator’s Output- You will need to connect the RF Demodulators output to the Cin-ema Rhapsody’s #4 Digital Audio Input (Orange RCA Connector).

If this is a second laser disc player, chances are it may have a digitalaudio input, either Coax (RCA) or optical (TOS-Link). You will mostlikely wish to connect this laser disc player to either Digital Input #2or Optical Input #2 on the Cinema Rhapsody. This would free upone analog audio input for an eleventh component as the “Out OfThe Box” setup permits for connection of only ten devices (withoutgoing into the “Custom Setup”.)

Follow the steps on the bottom of the next page to alter the audioinput from Analog 2 to either Digital 2 or Optical 2.

The “Out Of The Box” setuppresumes that for theLASERDISC input, you wishto connect a laser disc playerthat does not have either adigital coax or digital opticalaudio output. You can alsouse this input for a secondlaser disc player that has adigital audio output howeveryou will need to customprogram this input using thesteps discussed on thebottom of the following page. For laser disc players that donot have a digital audiooutput, you will use thefollowing laser disc outputs

Stereo Audio (R&L) Output

AC-3•RF Output (LD)(May or May Not Exist)

Video Output(Composite RCA Type)

Your laser disc player mayalso include an S-Videooutput. Please note, theCinema Rhapsody does notcross mix video signals. Assuch, if you wish to use acomponent’s S-Video output, you will need to connect an S-Video cable from the CinemaRhapsody to the TV orProjector.

Use the diagram on thefollowing page to make yourlaser disc player connections.ADA suggests using a quality75Ω Coaxial cable. In theevent that none are available, you can use standard RCAinterconnects.

Typically, you will use the diagram below to connect the CinemaRhapsody’s Record Output to either a VCR or Cassette (or othertype of) Recorder. If you wish to pass audio and video to the VCRand audio only to the Cassette, you will need to provide RCA “Y”Splitters which will then enable both connection of the VCR andCassette. Some components may not be properly grounded. Whenthese devices are connected to other devices using “Y” splitters, you may begin to hear some background hum or noise. If this is thecase, you may wish to proceed with the connection of only one ofthe recording devices. Otherwise, please consult with your Autho-rized ADA Dealer.

The Cinema Rhapsodyfeatures a “Record Output”that can select a componentindependently from the maintheater’s componentselection. Thus it is possibleto record from onecomponent to another (i.e.DSS to VCR) while you areviewing a third component(i.e. DVD).

When connecting the Cinema Rhapsody to your display device, youwill need to make these connections in order of priority: 1st - Com-posite (RCA) Video, 2nd S-Video, and 3rd Component Video (RGB)

Composite VideoThe Cinema Rhapsody has three main Video Outputs (RCA Com-posite). VIDEO OUT 1 & 2 are identical and provide standard com-posite video. The OSD VIDEO OUT offers, in addition to standardcomposite video (like 1 & 2), an on-screen-display overlay that ap-pears when a function is selected on the Cinema Rhapsody. ThisOSD readout is useful during setup and when the Cinema Rhap-sody is out of visual range from the seating area.

S-VideoIf you wish to view super video, you will need to make this connec-tion to your TV or Projector.

Component Video (RGB or HDTV)Component Video is currently only available on better model DVDplayers. The video signal consists of Y, Cr, and Cb. If your TV,monitor, projector, or line doubler (tripler or quadrupler) offer an RGBor Component Video input, you can proceed to make these connec-tions.

The Cinema Rhapsody offersseveral video outputs. If yourvideo display device (TV) ordisplay system (projector, linedoubler) offers a componentor RGB type of input, you mayconnect the CinemaRhapsody’s Component VideoOutput in addition to at theComposite Video and SuperVideo Outputs. Please note, the Cinema Rhapsody doesnot provide cross videomixing and as such, each typeof video input requires its ownvideo output connection toyour display device.

The Cinema Rhapsody comespreprogrammed “Out Of TheBox’ ready to play. Unlessyou are going to use an SPLmeter to calibrate yoursystem, proceed with thesetup as described on page33.

If you are using an SPL meter, you will first want to set thepink noise level for all of thechannels to 75 dB.

Audio Setup

The Cinema Rhapsody has been calibrated in the factory for opti-mum operation. Thus you can at this time decide to run your sys-tem with just minor adjustments to the Master Volume Control (cen-ter knob).

However, since not all speaker configurations and rooms are thesame and for correct setup you should adjust the channel balanceand delay settings (see page 46 for setting delays) to better suityour home theater system. If you are unfamiliar with the process ofhome theater level calibration and the use of an SPL meter (SoundPressure Level meter), ADA strongly suggests contacting an Autho-rized ADA Dealer for assistance prior to proceeding.

The Cinema Rhapsody features an internal Pink Noise generatorwhich is used to determine signal level to each speaker. In order tobest proceed with the remainder of this page’s setup instructions, itis recommended that you use an SPL meter.

The Cinema Rhapsody also has a noise feature called “Noise All”.This feature sends full bandwidth pink noise to all of your speakers. This enables you to make a quick check to make sure that yourspeakers are connected and that all the drivers are working.

Turn the CHANNEL knob until the display reads NOISE TEST andthen press the CHANNEL knob. The top line should now read NOISEALL and the second line should read ALL -0.0 dB. You should hearpink noise from all of your speakers.

You can now do one of two things, either:

a. Raise and lower the level of the noise coming from all speakers.

Press the CHANNEL knob and then by turning the CHANNELknob, you raise and lower the volume. You can now checkthe operation of your speakers.

b. Enter into the individual channel adjustment procedure.

1 Turn the CHANNEL knob one click clockwise and you willread NOISE LEFT, press it. You will now hear pink noisecoming from just the Left channel. Turn on your SPL meterto the 70dB range, Slow, C Weighted setting. Sit in yourlistening position and hold the meter at comfortable armslength, pointed upwards and adjust the CHANNEL knobup or down so that the meter reads 75dB. Press theCHANNEL knob again.

2 Turn the CHANNEL knob clockwise one click until the dis-play reads NOISE CENTER and then press the CHAN-NEL knob. Raise (clockwise) or lower (counter clockwise)the center channel’s pink noise level to approximately 75dB and then press the CHANNEL knob.

At this time you have programmed the Cinema Rhapsody’s VolumePreset #1 to levels that are consistent with the pink noise and thispreset corresponds to a listening level comfortable with respect toyour listening environment.

Bass Volume Presets - While the five main channels should be setto the same level as you select from one source to another, ADA hasexperienced that the subwoofer level for different components anddecoding modes can be significantly different. As such, a bass levelfor one input might need to be lower for another input. The CinemaRhapsody is equipped to handle this issue as each input can haveits own bass level setting stored into VOL PRESET 1. To set thebass level for all other inputs, you will need to select each input oneat a time, adjust the bass level to taste and load it into the preset.

11 Turn the INPUT knob to the next device and engage the com-ponent into play.

12 Turn the CHANNEL knob until the second line of the displayreads SUB and a number. Press the CHANNEL knob.

13 Raise and lower the CHANNEL knob and the subwoofer willgo up and down in volume. When you have a desiredsubwoofer level, press the CHANNEL knob.

14 Turn the CHANNEL knob until the display reads VOL RE-CALL 1. Press and hold the CHANNEL knob until thedisplay reads VOL STORED 1.

15 Proceed with steps 16-19 until all active inputs have beencalibrated.

The Cinema Rhapsody iscapable of setting differentbass levels for each one yourcomponents. While the mainfive channels levels remainthe same, each input wouldengage a different bass level. This permits you to contourthe bass sound based on thesource component, thedecoding mode, and thesoftware. As differentdecoding modes and theirsoftware have varying levelsof bass, you will find thisfeature very useful.

Note:In order to load in a bass levelfor each one of yourcomponents, you will need toselect that component andthen adjust its bass level whilethe unit is in play. After youhave set a bass level you like, you will need to load thecurrent volume setting intothe Volume Preset #1, usingthe same steps that wererequired to load the preset onthe previous pages.

Page 36

At this time you have already connected all or most of your audiovideo components to the Cinema Rhapsody. If you are satisfiedwith the component connections to the Cinema Rhapsody, you neednot continue with this section. As the Cinema Rhapsody ispreprogrammed in the factory for optimum performance, you willnot necessarily need to custom program your unit.

In the event that you want to custom program your Cinema Rhap-sody, this section will discuss altering audio and video inputs linkedto a particular Input Label.

Each Input Label is nothing but a name. Assigned to each name isan audio input, a video input, a super video input, a componentvideo input, and an AC-3 RF input (RF see page 38). Even a radiotuner, that does not have a video output, will have a video outputpossibly connected to another device, linked to it. As such eachInput Label has several Cinema Rhapsody rear panel jacks tied toit. The beauty behind the Cinema Rhapsody, is that these jacks arelinked in software and can be easily switched using the steps below. Please note, you can also alter the way the Input Label reads. Thisis discussed on the next page, Custom Setup - Labeling Inputs.

To alter a components audio and video inputs:

1 Select the device you wish to alter by turning the INPUT knobuntil the second line of the display reads the device nameand press the INPUT knob.

2 Turn the MODE knob clockwise until the display reads SETUPMODE and then press the MODE knob.

3 Turn the MODE knob clockwise to until the display reads thetype of input you wish to alter for this component.

If you want to alter an analog input, turn to ANALOG INPUTIf you want to alter a video input, turn to VIDEO INPUT.If you want to alter an S-Video input, turn to S-VIDEO INPUT.

When you have selected the type of input you wish to alter, press the MODE knob.

4 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the new inputyou are connected to and then press the MODE knob toengage that input.

5 Proceed with step three to alter other inputs for this compo-nent.

6 If you wish to exit this mode, simply turn the INPUT knob.

Custom Setup - A/V Linking

The Cinema Rhapsody can becustom configured, permittingyou to link any Analog, Video,S-Video, Component Video, and LASER AC-3 RF (RFInputs are discussed on thenext page) input jack to aparticular Input Label. Youcan also modify or completelychange the name of an InputLabel. And finally, under ProSetup, you can even limit thenumber of Input Labels thatappear as you turn the INPUTknob. While this is discussedfurther under Pro Setup, ifyou wish to fully customizeyour Cinema Rhapsody, suchthat you only see the numberof devices you are using, youwill first need to:

A Determine the numberof components you areconnecting to your CinemaRhapsody and set the FinalInput limit to correspond tothis number (see Pro Setup).

B Now that you have theexact number of Input Labelsyou need, you will most likelyneed to alter the Input Labelsas some of the names maynot be displayed exactly asyou wish them to. (See nextpage - Altering Input Labels)

C Once you have theInput Labels sequencing inorder as you wish them to,you may also need to alter theaudio and video connectionslinked to this input label. These steps are discussed inthe paragraph to the left(Custom Setup - AV Linking).

Page 40: Cinema Rhapsody Cover & Index - ada-usa.com · Page 3 Power Amplifier (& Powered Subwoofer) Connections-+ OUTPUT 4-16Ω INPUT CH 1 47KΩ - + WARNING! CONNECTIONS. 4 Cinema Rhapsody

Page 37

As discussed on the previous page, the Cinema Rhapsody will typi-cally apply an A/V Link to each Input Label. Thus, if you select theTUNER 8 input and leave your TV & VCR on, you will still see theVCR’s video image even though you are listening to the radio tuner. Each Input Label will have a video and S-video follower.

The Cinema Rhapsody uses a unique circuit whereby it can auto-detect an AC-3 or DTS signal. This auto detection will permit theCinema Rhapsody to change its active decoding mode between anAC-3, DTS, or non-5.1 mode depending on the software. Since asingle input could auto-mode between as many as three differentdecoding formats, and since each decoding format has several en-hancement and filter options available, ADA has made it very easyto setup the Cinema Rhapsody to play your desired format optionautomatically.

When you select an input that is programmed to auto-mode, beginplaying some software from that component. The Cinema Rhap-sody will auto detect the correct decoding format. At that time, youmay turn the mode knob to one of the other mode options. Whenyou begin playing software that needs to be decoded in this sameformat, the Cinema Rhapsody will engage the last selected formatoption.

As an example, suppose your DVD player is connected to the Cin-ema Rhapsody to play Dolby Digital (AC-3) DVDs, PCM CDs, DTSDVDs, and DTS CDs. Furthermore, suppose you prefer AC-3 UL-TRA decoding for AC-3 software, QUAD BYBASS for standard CDs,and DTS DIRECT for DTS DVDs and CDs, all you would do is toplace the first piece of software in the DVD player. If this were anDolby Digital (AC-3) DVD, the auto detection might very well firstengage AC-3 THX. You can then turn the mode knob to AC-3 UL-TRA and then press the mode knob to secure this mode. Any timeyou play an AC-3 DVD from this point forward, the Cinema Rhap-sody will auto-mode to AC-3 ULTRA. To further insure proper setup, continue to test the auto-mode circuit with a standard CD. Again, the Cinema Rhapsody will engage a two channel surround mode, typically Pro Logic. Turn the mode knob to QUAD BYPASS andpress it. From this point forward, non-5.1 formatted material willautomatically play in QUAD BYPASS. Finally, play a DTS CD orDVD. Once DTS locks in, turn the mode knob to DTS DIRECT andpress it. As with AC-3 and two-channel formats, from this point for-ward, the DTS automode default format will be DTS DIRECT.

Please note, if your default mode is set to any DTS mode, ifauto detection occurs for either AC-3 or two-channel software, the Cinema Rhapsody will engage to either AC-3 THX or ProLogic THX, regardless of the last mode used for that format.

Custom Setup - Auto Mode

The Cinema Rhapsodyincorporates a unique AutoMode detection circuit for AC-3, DTS, and non-5.1 software. When Auto Mode is set to onfor a Laser Disc or DVDcomponent, the CinemaRhapsody will automaticallyswitch to an appropriatedecoding mode.

When an input is set to auto-mode on, it will engage thebest possible decoding mode.As each 5.1 and the twochannel format have severaloptions, you can select whichoption you want engagedduring an auto-modedetection sequence. As theCinema Rhapsody will recallthe last mode format optionused, you can setup yourCinema Rhapsody by simplydialing in a mode for both AC-3 and DTS 5.1 software and adecoding option for twochannel software.

Page 38

Auto Mode On/Off

The AUTOMODE function is a setting rather than a decoding mode. This setting is intended to permit the Cinema Rhapsody to automati-cally switch between 5.1 (AC-3 or DTS) decoding modes or a twochannel mode depending on the software in play. The AUTOMODEfunction will allow you to flip between AC-3 laser discs (via the laserdisc player’s internal RF Demodulator), DTS and 2 channel PCMlasers & CDs, and DTS or AC-3 DVDs.To turn the AUTOMODE ON or OFF:

1 Turn the INPUT knob to the device (capable of playing AC-3software) you wish to alter and press the INPUT knob.

2 Turn the MODE knob clockwise until the display readsAUTOMODE ON or AUTOMODE OFF.

3 Press the MODE knob to switch ON to OFF or OFF to ON.

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “Out Of The Box” Setup has the LASER/DVD 1 and LASERDISC 2 Input Labels set to AUTOMODE ON. Allother Input Labels are set to OFF. If you are using a DVD player onthe DVD PLAYER 3 Input Label and you plan to also play standardCDs, you may wish to set the DVD PLAYER Input Label toAUTOMODE ON.

For components that are notset to auto-mode on, theCinema Rhapsody’s defaultmode for this input will returnafter re-selecting the input orduring a restart, even if youalter the mode.

For example, if your CD playeris set for Quad Bypass as itsDefault Mode but for this oneCD, you wish to listen to it inStereo, turn the mode knob toStereo. If you change inputsor turn the system off, thenext time you access your CDplayer, it will default to theQuad Bypass mode.

Page 39

The Cinema Rhapsody permits you to alter the Input Labels. Theseare labels that appear for each component as you rotate the Inputknob. This is quite useful if you have connected a component thatdoes not appear on the Cinema Rhapsody (i.e. DAT Player). Alter-ing Input Labels is also available when you don’t want the numbersto appear on the Cinema Rhapsody’s display (i.e. LASER/DVD 1,LASERDISC 2). The front panel display can read a name up to 12characters in length (alphanumeric). The most significant benefit ofaltering Input Label names is derived when using the CinemaRhapsody’s “Final Input” Setup Mode (found under Pro Setup). The“Final Input” Setup Mode permits you to limit the number of InputLabels that appear on the Cinema Rhapsody. If you wish to onlydisplay only the devices connected to your Cinema Rhapsody, ADAsuggests first proceeding to the section entitled “Pro Setup - FinalInput”. Once you have set the Final Input, then return to this page tochange the Input Labels. To alter a components Input Label:

1 Select the device you wish to alter by turning the INPUT knobuntil the second line of the display reads the device nameand press the INPUT knob.

2 Turn the MODE knob clockwise until the display reads SETUPMODE and then press the MODE knob.

3 Turn the MODE knob clockwise to until the display readsINPUT LABELS and then press the MODE knob. Thetop line of the display will read LABEL INPUTS and thesecond line of the display will read the Input Label as itcurrently appears with the first letter of the Input Labelflashing (cursor).

4 Turn the MODE knob to select a new character for the firstletter. If you do not wish to alter the character of the firstletter, press the MODE knob to advance to the cursor tothe second letter.

5 Turn the MODE knob to change this character and press theMODE knob to advance the cursor position to the nextcharacter.

6 Repeat step 5 until the display reads the new name for thisInput Label. ADA suggests leaving the numeric value atthe end of each Input Label in place to provide you with areference as to this Input Label’s position to the CinemaRhapsody’s program.

7 When you are done relabeling an Input Label, turn the IN-PUT knob to advance to the next input you wish to rela-bel. Repeat with steps 4 - 6. When you are done labelingall inputs, turn either Volume, Channel, or Record to exitthe

Custom Setup - Labeling Inputs

While the Cinema Rhapsody’s“Out Of The Box” Setup haspre-labeled connections formost any home theater audio/video component, you maywish to custom label any or allinputs to display to yourliking.

The Cinema Rhapsody’s built-in character generator allowsyou to alter the way an InputLabel reads when it isdisplayed. If you prefer tohave DSS/SAT 5 input read assimply DSS RECEIVER, youcan enter the CinemaRhapsody’s Label Mode toedit and alter this input. While the “Out Of The Box”Setup assigns a sequencedInput Label number to eachInput Label (1 -15), you canoverwrite these numbers sothat they do not appear, butnote, these numbers do referto the direct access inputnumbers found on the ADAOne-For-All Remote.

The ability to alter the wayInput Labels read isparticularly useful if you arecustom configuring yourCinema Rhapsody using thePro Setup’s “Final Input”settings. Since the Final InputSetup allows you to limit thenumber of Input Labels thatare displayed as you rotatethe Input Knob, the need torelabel the lower inputs to suityour setup will be important.Prior to proceeding you maywish to review Final Inputunder Pro Setup.

The Cinema Rhapsody is factory set to always turn on to the VCR 4input. Thus, even if you were watching a movie on DVD last night, when the kids come to turn it on in the morning, the Cinema Rhap-sody will always switch to the VCR.

While this ideal for some, you may prefer to have your Cinema Rhap-sody to turn on to another device, for example the DSS receiver. You may even prefer to have the Cinema Rhapsody always engageto the component that was last used. Any of these options is easy toaccess by following these steps.

To alter the Cinema Rhapsody’s Turn-On Input:

1 Turn the MODE knob clockwise until the display reads SETUPMODE and then press the MODE knob.

2 Turn the MODE knob clockwise to until the display readsTURNON INPUT press the MODE knob.

3 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the device youwish to have the Cinema Rhapsody come on to or to thewords LAST USED and press the MODE knob to engagethat setting.

4 If you wish to exit the setup mode, simply turn the INPUTknob.

Custom Setup - Turn-On Input

The Cinema Rhapsodyprovides you with the abilityto select which device youwant the Cinema Rhapsody toalways turn on to. If youprimarily use the CinemaRhapsody for viewing DSSbroadcasts, you will want toalter the Turn On Input.

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “OutOf The Box” Turn On Input isset to VCR as most any hometheater system includes aVCR. The steps in theparagraph to the right detailhow to alter the CinemaRhapsody’s Turn On Input.

While you may opt to have theCinema Rhapsody turn on to aspecific component, you mayalso opt to have the CinemaRhapsody always engage tothe input last used.

Page 41

Each Input Label can have a mode automatically engagedwhenever that input is accessed. This eliminates the confu-sion of having to figure out what mode to select every timethat device is engaged. The “Out Of The Box Setup” has al-ready programmed the Input Labels to engage the most ap-propriate decoding mode for the various devices. If you wishto alter the Default Mode for one or all of the devices followthese steps.

Please note, that for non-5.1 channel components, the defaultmode is always engaged when that input is selected. Youmay still change modes while on this input. If desired, youmay also engage the option of “Last Used”.

If you have selected a component that is set to auto-mode(Auto-Mode On), the default mode will have different proper-ties. Since auto-mode will engage one of three decoding for-mats (AC-3, DTS, or 2-channel) based on the input signal, one singledefault mode (or prefered) is required. As such, these “defaults” aresimply set during the playback of a software segment encoded inthat mode. During playback, turn the mode knob to select the de-sired option for that mode (i.e. DTS DIRECT, DTS THX, DTS RE-EQ, etc.). Every time from this point forward a DTS software seg-ment is played on this input, the last used DTS decoding option willengage (i.e. DTS THX). The same is true for AC-3 modes or two-channel modes. This “last mode type played” default-to feature willalways operate if the input’s Default Mode is set to “Last Used”. Ifyou set the Default Mode to either an AC-3 or two-channel mode, when that mode is detected, the Cinema Rhapsody will engage theDefault Mode rather than the mode format option that was last used.If you select any DTS mode as the Default Mode, when either anAC-3 or two-channel mix is detected, the Cinema Rhapsody will onlyengage either AC-3 THX or PRO LOGIC THX, respectively.

To set or alter the Default Mode:

1 Turn the INPUT knob until the input that you wish to alterappears on the second line of the display and then pressthe INPUT knob.

2 Turn the MODE knob clockwise until the display reads SETUPMODE and then press the MODE knob.

3 Turn the MODE knob clockwise to until the display readsDEFAULT MODE press the MODE knob. The top line ofthe display will read the current default mode.

4 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the desired de-fault mode or the words LAST USED, or AUTO MODE.Then press the MODE knob to lock in that default mode.

5 Turn the INPUT knob to the next input you wish to alter andpress the INPUT knob. Then proceed with steps 2-4.

Custom Setup - Default Mode

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “OutOf The Box” Setup hasassigned Default Modes toeach input. If you are alteringthe Out Of The Box Setup, chances are you will also wishto alter the default modes forthe inputs you have changed.

For components set to AutoMode Off, the CinemaRhapsody will always engagethe specified Default Modeincluding the option of “LastUsed”.

For components that are setto Auto Mode On, the defaultmode will apply as the go tomode, providing a betterdecoding option is notdetected. You may also opt toleave the Default Mode set toLAST USED as in auto mode, the Cinema Rhapsody willautomatically engage the lastformat option for that mode. When DTS is selected as aDefault Mode in automode,THX will always be applied toeither AC-3 or two channelmixes.

The Cinema Rhapsody has the ability to recall one of three volumelevels when it is turned on. The Out Of The Box Setup has theCinema Rhapsody always turning onto VOL PRESET 1 which isfactory set for all channels and all inputs at -25.0 dB. This level istypically a low or moderate volume level. If you have already com-pleted the section on “Audio Setup”, then you may have alreadylocked in a new audio preset on VOL PRESET 1.

Factory Default Note: The Cinema Rhapsody has beenpreprogrammed in the factory such that both VOL PRESET 1 andVOL PRESET 2 have the same preset level of all channels on allinputs set to -25.0 dB. If you wish to instantly recall the factorysettings, simply proceed to recall VOL PRESET 2 by turning theCHANNEL knob until the display reads VOL RECALL 2 and thenpress the CHANNEL knob. If you wish to reset VOL PRESET 1 tothe factory default as to begin again, once you have recalled VOLPRESET 2, simply turn the CHANNEL knob until the display readsVOL RECALL 1 and then press and hold the CHANNEL knob untilthe display reads VOL STORED 1.

If you want the Cinema Rhapsody to come on to a volume levelother than VOL PRESET 1, you can alter it to come on to either VOLPRESET 2 or LAST USED.

To alter the Cinema Rhapsody’s Turn On Volume:

1 Turn the MODE knob clockwise until the display reads SETUPMODE and then press the MODE knob.

2 Turn the MODE knob clockwise to until the display readsTURNON VOL press the MODE knob. The top line of thedisplay will read the current turn on volume setting.

3 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the desired turnon volume. Then press the MODE knob to lock in thatturn on volume.

Custom Setup - Turn On Volume

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “OutOf The Box” Setup has theCinema Rhapsody alwaysturning on to VOLUMEPRESET #1. Unless you havealready locked in a newvolume preset under AudioSetup, this level will be -25.0dB.

You can opt to alter the TurnOn Volume to either VOLUMEPRESET #2 or the LAST USEDvolume level. The stepsdescribed in the paragraph tothe right detail how to changethe Cinema Rhapsody’s TurnOn Volume.

NoteADA strongly recommendsusing a Turn On VolumePreset whose level is not toohigh. Since the last volumeused might be ear shattering, having the Cinema Rhapsodyturn on to a preset volumelevel removes the chance ofengaging a system that isready to sand-blast a room. This is providing that theVolume Preset you select isalso of moderate level.

Note, that as you change the level thedisplay increases or decreases in intensity. In Auto, thedisplay will darken as you place your hand over the frontpanel’s photo cell.

Custom Setup - Display Illumination Level

While you can turn the SixQuadrant Vector Scope of theCinema Rhapsody On and Off,you can actually dim the restof the Cinema Rhapsody’sfront panel display to a %level that you prefer or set itto Auto where a photo-celldetermines the display’sintensity. With the Autofunction, as a room getsdarker, the display dims.

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “OutOf The Box” Setup has theCinema Rhapsody’s frontpanel intensity level set to100%. You can dim thisdisplay, including the sixindicators to the left of thefront panel all the way downto 0% (full off).

Pro Setup - Delay Setup

The Cinema Rhapsodyprovides the flexibility to setthe delay for each of the sixspeaker channels includingthe subwoofer. Unlikeconventional delay settings, where the front right and leftspeakers act as the referencedistance, the six channel delayconfiguration requires thatone of the six channels beselected as the reference.Since delay is applied tospeakers that are closer thanthe furthest most speaker, the“Reference Speaker” is thespeaker that has the greatestdistance to the primarylistening position. Delay isthen applied to all of the otherchannels.

The Cinema Rhapsody iscapable of delay settings in0.5 millisecond increments.Since 1 foot is equal to 1millisecond, you can adjustthe delay for each channel tothe nearest 1/2 foot (sixinches). As such, yourmeasurements need berounded to the nearest sixinches.

The adjustment of the Delay setting can be configured independentlyfor each of the Cinema Rhapsody’s six channels (including thesubwoofer channel). The goal of setting channel delays is to havethe sound from each speaker reach the primary seating position atthe same time or perhaps better put, the correct time. Since theCinema Rhapsody can delay the signal of a channel from reachingthat channel’s output (and as such, the amplifier, then the speaker, and then your ears), the delay is applied to all speakers that arecloser to the listener than the furthest speaker. This speaker, theone at greatest distance from the primary listening/viewing position, for the sake of this section, will be called the “Reference Speaker”,because all of the other speakers closer to the listening position, willuse this speaker’s distance as a reference point.

The process of setting the delays will require the use of a tape mea-sure or some other distance measuring instrument. ADA suggestsusing the U.S./British standard to measure these distances in feetas sound travels at approximately 1 foot per millisecond (1/100th ofa second). If you are using the metric st andard to measure yourdistances, ADA suggests converting all measurements to feet as itwill be easier to calibrate the delay time settings (1 foot is approxi-mately equal to 30.5 cm).

The example below details a sample speaker placement where eachspeaker is located at a different distance from the primary seatingposition. The chart to the right is filled in with the sample distancesfrom diagram below.

To proceed, you will first determine where your primary listeningviewing seating position will be. Next you will want to measure thedistance from the primary listening/viewing position each speakerusing a tape measure. Your measurements need to be accurate towithin 6 Inches (1/2 Foot). Follow these steps:

1 Determine the primary seating position and use it as themeasuring center point.

2 Measure the distance to each speaker and write them on apiece of paper. You can use the blank chart found onpage 36 which is identical to the sample chart on the nextpage.

3 Determine which of the speakers is furthest away and usethis speaker as the “Reference Speaker”. In most hometheater systems, the front right and left speakers are typi-cally of equal distance from the seating area as are theleft and right surround speakers. If more than one speak-er’s position is equal to the greatest distance from theprimary seating position, these speakers will also haveno delay.

4 Subtract the distance of all of the speakers from the dis-tance of the furthest speaker (Reference Speaker). Thesenumbers will be used as the Delay Settings. The chartabove shows the measurements taken from the examplediagram on the bottom of the previous page. Since theFront Left speaker is placed the greatest distance fromthe seating area, it is used as the Reference Speakerand requires no delay (Delay = 0 ms). The difference inthe distance of the other speakers from the ReferenceSpeaker are the actual delay settings. The chart abovedetails the math involved.

Most home theaters have thefront right and left speakersequal distance from the mainseating area. The same isusually true of the surroundleft and right speakers as it iscommon that they are also ofequal distance from theprimary seating position.

If the front set of right and leftspeakers are furthest from theseating area, they wouldtogether act as the ReferenceSpeaker and not require anydelay. The distance to one ofthese speakers will be used asa reference and theappropriate delay would thenbe set for the surround, center, and subwooferspeakers. In this example, allspeakers are at differentdistances.

Delay Setup - Continued

The actual delay value foreach channel is equal to thedistance that is calculated bysubtracting that channel’sdistance from the primarylistening position from thedistance of the furthestspeaker to the primarylistening position.

In the example from theprevious page, the ReferenceSpeaker is the Left Frontspeaker and this speaker willnot be delayed (0.0 ms). TheCenter speaker’s delay will beset to 5 ms, the Front Rightspeaker will be set to 2 ms,the Subwoofer will be set to 7ms, the Left Surround speakerwill be set to 9 ms, and theRight Surround Speaker willbe set to 10 ms. Note thatthese delay settings are equalto the distances in feet.

The Cinema Rhapsody has the ability to be controlled in a networkwith other ADA Bus™ components, including multiple CinemaRhapsodys. As such, the Cinema Rhapsody has the ability to beset to as many as 256 addresses. Typically, the factory default ad-dress for the Cinema Rhapsody is Bus Address 0. At this addresssetting, the Cinema Rhapsody operates with its infrared remote con-trol.

When using the Cinema Rhapsody in an ADA Bus™ multi-zone au-dio/video system, you may need to alter the address setting to havethe Cinema Rhapsody also operate in conjunction with that zone’sADA Bus™ keypad.

The Cinema Rhapsody also has a setting whereby the bi-drectionalcontrol option via the ADA Bus™ jack is completely off. To selectthis feature, set the Network Bus Address to “255”.

To change the Bus Address:

1 While in the Pro Setup mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads NETWORK BUS and then press the MODEknob.

2 Turn the MODE knob until you have set the Network Bus tothe desired address setting (from 0 default standard to254 - 255 turns the bidirectional control/feedback optionoff).

3 When you have the desired address setting on the CinemaRhapsody’s display, press the MODE knob to engage theaddress.

4 To exit the Network Bus Setup Mode without leaving the ProSetup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wish to exitthe Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobs otherthan MODE or INPUT.

The Cinema Rhapsody provides you with the ability to custom con-figure the way its display appears. Through the use of the LabelInputs option, you can rename an Input Label to appear as you wishit read. Through the Audio/Video Setup, you can alter the links tothe Cinema Rhapsody’s input jacks for any Input Label. But if youwish to have the Cinema Rhapsody scroll through Input Labels foronly the devices you have connected to it, you will first need to limitthe number of Input Labels the Cinema Rhapsody will display usingthe Final Input Setup Mode.

As the Cinema Rhapsody has a total of fifteen Input Labels in itsfactory default “Out Of The Box” setup, you may not necessarily beconnecting a total of fifteen devices to the Cinema Rhapsody. If forexample, you are connecting only six devices to the Cinema Rhap-sody, you can limit the number of Input Labels that appear on theCinema Rhapsody to only six.

Please note, that when the Cinema Rhapsody sets a limit to thehigher Input Label names, it does so by, in this example, not display-ing Input Labels 7-15. You cannot selectively omit Input Label namesfrom displaying (i.e. Input Labels 3, 4, 8, 9-15). Thus, when you seta limit to the number of Input Label names that are accessible, youwill also most likely need to alter the names of certain labels as wellas the audio/video links to those labels.

To set the Final Input limit:

1 While in the Pro Setup Mode, turn the MODE knob clock-wise until the display reads FINAL INPUT and then pressthe MODE knob.

2 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the last inputyou wish to access. If you have not altered any InputLabels up to this point, the Input Label name should alsoappear with a number after it and you can use these as aguide.

3 When you have the last Input Label you wish to display onthe screen, press the MODE knob to engage this finalinput.

4 To exit the Final Input Setup Mode without leaving the ProSetup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wish to exitthe Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobs otherthan MODE or INPUT.

Pro Setup - Final Input

The Cinema Rhapsodyprovides a total of fifteenInput Labels, all of which areaccessible in the “Out Of TheBox” configuration. However, while this setup permits easyconnection of almost anynumber of componentswithout complexprogramming, it also meansthat the Cinema Rhapsody willdisplay device names whichmay not necessarily be onyour system.

ADA has provided a means bywhere you can limit thenumber of Input Labels thatappear on the CinemaRhapsody’s display by lockingin the Final Input. This hasbeen discussed briefly underLabeling Inputs. When youset the Final Input, the CinemaRhapsody will no longer scrollthrough all Input Labelsbeyond the Final Input. Whilethis does permit you to limitthe number of devicesdisplayed, you will most likelyneed to re-configure the audioand video inputs as well astheir Input Labels for some ofyour components.

When setting the Speaker System Configuration, you are in effect, determining how the bass is managed through your speaker sys-tem. The Cinema Rhapsody is very flexible when it comes to thissetup. For those systems that utilize a THX certified speaker sys-tem, there will be no need to go through the elaborate Speaker Sys-tem Configuration setup. However, if you are using speakers thatare capable of full range operation or wish to have different bassoptions for different inputs, the Cinema Rhapsody is very flexible.

The Cinema Rhapsody supports two options for Speaker SystemConfiguration. The easiest option (SPKR SYS ALL) permits you tosetup the speaker configuration for all inputs in one easy step. Thesecond option (SPKR SYS IND), permits you setup a differentspeaker configuration for each input. It is worth noting at this time, ifare planning to set individual inputs to their own speaker configura-tion and then choose to access the SPKR SYS ALL configurationoption, you will immediately reset all previous individual speakersettings to what ever configuration first comes up when entering themore automatic option. As such, do not enter the SPKR SYS ALLoption if you have already adjusted the settings for particular inputs, unless of course, you wish to reset the previously selected individualsettings.

The chart below details the various options available. Please note, that the “0” option is the THX standard. It is also the CinemaRhapsody’s default speaker setup for all inputs.

To change the Speaker System Configuration for all inputs:1 While in the PRO SETUP mode, turn the MODE knob until

the display reads SPKR SYS ALL, then press the MODEknob. The display will read BASS CONFIG on the topline and the second line will read the ALL CONFIG #, wherethe number indicates the current setting for all inputs.

2 Turn the MODE knob until the desired Speaker System Con-figuration is displayed. To exit this setting, press the MODEknob (to return to the PRO SETUP mode) or turn theVOLUME knob (to exit the SETUP mode entirely).

Pro Setup - Speaker System Setup - Bass Management

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “OutOf The Box” Setup isdefaulted to the THX standardwhere the High Pass Filter isactive on all speakers withtheir subwoofer informationsummed to with the LFEchannel (Setting 0). If you areusing full range speakers inyour home theater system, you can alter the speakersystem configuration aspectof the Cinema Rhapsody. Please note, that you have twooptions when setting up theCinema Rhapsody for yourspeaker system. The firstoption permits you to setupthe Bass Configuration settingfor all inputs in one easy step. The other option permits youto set the speaker systemconfiguration, individually foreach input.

If you are using full rangespeakers (speakers capable ofhandling bass information)either for all five mainspeakers or just some of thefive main speakers, you willneed to use the chart todetermine which BassConfiguration # best appliesto your speaker array.

The Cinema Rhapsody provides you with the ability to turn its frontpanel infrared receiver on and off via software. If you are using theCinema Rhapsody in an environment which is flooded by other in-frared signals (from high intensity light bulbs, high frequency lamps,IR motion detectors, sunlight, etc.), you may opt to turn the CinemaRhapsody’s front panel infrared receiver off. You may also want toturn this IR receiver off if you are controlling the Cinema Rhapsodyfrom a computer controlled touch screen or ADA keypad as, in someinstances, this IR receiver will prevent component control due todata reflection.

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “Out Of The Box” setup has the IR receiverin the On position. To turn the IR receiver off or on:

1 While in the Pro Setup Mode, turn the MODE knob clock-wise until the display reads IRR CONTROL and then pressthe MODE knob. The Cinema Rhapsody’s display willread IRR CONTROL on the top line and the second linewill read “IS NOW ON” or “IS NOW OFF”.

2 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the correct set-ting for the IR Receiver, ON or OFF.

3 To exit the IRR Control Setup Mode without leaving the ProSetup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wish to exitthe Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobs otherthan MODE or INPUT.

The Cinema Rhapsodypermits you to turn off thefront panel IR receiver viasoftware. This is useful if theCinema Rhapsody is beingtouch screen controlled assome installations will causethe front panel IR to reflectdata transfers and preventcontrol.

To change the Speaker System Configuration for individual inputs:1 While in the PRO SETUP mode, turn the MODE knob until the display reads SPKR SYS IND

and then press the MODE knob. The display will read BASS CONFIG on the top line andthe second line will read the IND CONFIG #.

2 Turn the INPUT knob (In the BASS CONFIG Setup Mode, turning the INPUT knob does noteject you from the Pro Setup) to select the input you wish to adjust. The top line of thedisplay will momentarily display the input you have selected (turned to) and the display willthen indicate this input’s BASS CONFIG/IND CONFIG #.

3 Turn the MODE knob until you have set the IND CONFIG # to the desired setting (from 0default & THX setting to 12). You do not need to press the MODE knob to engage thebass configuration and if you wish, you can listen to the different configurations as you dialthrough them.

4 If you wish to alter the Speaker System Configuration for any or all other inputs, repeat steps 2& 3. To exit the Bass Configuration Setup Mode without leaving the Pro Setup Mode, pressthe MODE knob. The Cinema Rhapsody provides you with the ability to engage aBass Peak Limit Manager that operates in a range from 0 dB (deci-bels) to -24 dB. The function of the Bass Peak Limit Manager is toreduce the possibility of overloading the subwoofer in cases of ex-treme volume and/or software that provides extremely dynamic bassinformation. If your subwoofer is capable of providing a large levelof bass without bottoming out, you may not need to engage theBass Peak Limit Manager. If however, you play your system atvolume levels that, on occasion, will cause your subwoofer to playdistorted audio segments, you will wish to engage the Bass PeakLimit Manager.

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “Out Of The Box” setup has the Bass Peak Limit Manager set to OFF. Thereare two different ways in which to set the Bass Peak Limit Manager. The BASS LIMITER is manualand does not provide any subwoofer noise (as in Noise Test). To set the Bass Peak Limit Manager inthis manner requires that you listen to your subwoofer for distortion. The second option, BASS LIM-ITER SET, engages subwoofer noise used to adjust the Bass Peak Limit Manager. You can use eitherBASS LIMITER or BASS LIMITER SET to dial in the desired Bass Peak Limit Manager level. You donot need to use both methods, thus select just one.

The Bass Peak Limit Manager has a range with the options of OFF or -24 dB up to 0 dB. The rangeoperates as such: As an example, assume that the Bass Peak Limit Manager is set to -12dB. Duringoperation, as the Master Volume Level is raised and goes above -12 dB, the volume of the subwooferchannel will stop rising. As such, regardless of how loud the sound system gets (-11 dB all the way to+10 dB), the bass level will never exceed -12 dB bass limit.

To turn on and adjust the Bass Peak Limit Manager using no test tones:

1 While in the Pro Setup Mode, turn the MODE knob clockwise until the display reads BASSLIMITER and then press the MODE knob. The Cinema Rhapsody’s display will read BASSLIMITER on the top line and the second line will read INITIALIZING and/or OFF or a num-ber (-24 to 0 dB).

2 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the desired setting for the Bass Peak Limit Man-ager (OFF or -24 to 0 DB).

3 To exit the BASS LIMITER Setup Mode without leaving the Pro Setup Mode, press the MODEknob. If you wish to exit the Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobs other thanMODE or INPUT.

To turn on and adjust the Bass Peak Limit Manager using test tones:

1 While in the Pro Setup Mode, turn the MODE knob clockwise until the display reads BASS LIMSET and then press the MODE knob. The Cinema Rhapsody’s display will read BASS LIMSET on the top line and the second line will read INITIALIZING and/or OFF or a number(-24 to 0 dB). Also, the test tone will automatically begin to emanate from the subwoofer.

2 Turn the MODE knob gradually and stop just prior to the subwoofer distorting.

3 Push the MODE knob once to both lock in the Bass Peak Limit Manager setting and to exit thissetup mode.

Note: Most active subwoofers have their built-in limiters set to “off”.

Pro Setup - Bass Peak Limit Manager

The Cinema Rhapsodypermits you to engage a BassPeak Level Manager whichwill prevent the subwooferfrom distorting when playingthe system at high volumelevels that the subwoofercannot properly process.

The Cinema Rhapsody offers several mode settings when decodinga Dolby Digital (AC-3) signal. One of these modes is AC-3 NIGHTmode which provides compression of the low level and high levelsignals, such that, the bangs and booms are reduced and the whis-pers are accentuated. This, in effect narrows the volume range topermit comfortable listening without the worry of disturbing othersduring an explosion or other loud dramatic sound effect. To accom-plish this compression, the Cinema Rhapsody, when in AC-3 NIGHTMode, engages both the HDR (High Dynamic Range) Scale and theLDR (Low Dynamic Range) Scale to “255” or Full On. These scalefactors are also set to “255” or Full On during the AC-3 STANDARDmode. While the Cinema Rhapsody’s “Out Of The Box” Setup hasthe HDR and LDR scale factors set to “0” or Full Off (no compres-sion), you can selectively set these scales to a point between (andincluding) 0 and 255. These scale factors are specific to the AC-3modes and as such, can be set differently for either AC-3 ULTRAmode and AC-3 STANDARD MODE (Please note that AC-3 THXand AC-3 RE-EQ will also be affected with any change to the AC-3ULTRA mode in that these modes are tied together).

Prior to proceeding with the HDR and LDR scale factor, you will firstneed to select an AC-3 Input Label. Turn the mode knob toAUTOMODE OFF (or ON) is displayed. If the display is readingAUTOMODE ON, press the MODE button to turn it to AUTOMODEOFF. If Automode is already set to off, turn the mode knob to eitherAC-3 ULTRA or AC-3 STANDARD (which ever one you wish to ad-just the HDR and/or LDR scale) and press the MODE button to en-gage that mode. You will then need to enter the Pro Setup mode.

1 While in the Pro Setup mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads either HDR UP SCALE or LDR DN SCALEand then press the MODE knob. The display will readHDR UP SCALE (or LDR DN SCALE) on the top line andthe second line will read the current scale factor and themode name (ULTRA, STANDARD, THX, or RE-EQ). Ifthis input is set to AC-3 NIGHT, AC-3 MAX, or a non-AC-3 mode, the display will read FIXED SCALE. While ineither the HDR or LDR Setup mode, you can turn the IN-PUT knob to see the settings on other inputs.

2 Turn the MODE knob until you have set the HDR (or LDR)scale set to the desired setting (from 0 default standard -Full Off to 255 Full On). You do not need to press theMODE knob to engage this setting. While in either theHDR or LDR Setup mode, you can turn the INPUT knobto see the settings on other inputs with other modes.

3 If you wish to alter the HDR or LDR scales for any or all othermodes, repeat steps 2 & 3. To exit the HDR (or LDR)Setup Mode without leaving the Pro Setup Mode, pressthe MODE knob. If you wish to exit the Setup Mode com-pletely, turn any of the knobs other than MODE or INPUT.

Pro Setup - HDR & LDR Scale Factors

The HDR (High DynamicRange) and LDR (LowDynamic Range) ScaleFactors permit the playback ofAC-3 formatted sourcematerial with compression ofboth the low and high levels. As such, the bangs andbooms are never too loud andwhispers never to soft. Thisnarrowing of the DynamicRange takes place whenlistening to the AC-3 Nightmode. However, the CinemaRhapsody can also adjustthese factors for the AC-3Ultra and AC-3 Standardmodes. If you makeadjustments to the AC-3 Ultramode, these changes will thenalso apply to AC-3 THX andAC-3 Re-EQ as they are linkedtogether. Conversely, if youmodify either AC-3 THX orAC-3 Re-EQ, the other linkedmodes are also affected.

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “OutOf The Box” Setup has theHDR and LDR Scale Factorsset to “0” or Full Off. Thesescale factors are engaged inthe AC-3 Night modeautomatically and need not beadjusted to access AC-3Night.

THX is an exclusive set of standards and technologies establishedto make your experience of the film soundtrack as faithful as pos-sible to what the director intended. Movie soundtracks are mixed inspecial movie theaters called dubbing stages and are designed tobe played back in movie theaters with similar equipment and condi-tions. The soundtrack created for the movie theater is then trans-ferred directly onto Laserdisc, VHS tape, DVD, etc., and is notchanged for playback in a small home theater environment. THXengineers developed patented technologies to accurately translatethe sound from the movie theater environment into the home, cor-recting the tonal and spatial errors that occur. When the THX modeis on, the following three THX technologies are automatically addedafter the decoded signal:

Re-Equalization™ - The tonal balance of a film soundtrack will beexcessively bright and harsh when played back over audio equip-ment in the home because the film soundtracks were designed tobe played back in large movie theatres using very different profes-sional equipment. Re-Equalization restores the correct tonal bal-ance for watching a movie soundtrack in a small home environment.

Timbre Matching™ - The human ear changes our perception of asound depending on the direction from which the sound is coming. In a movie theater, there is an array of surround speakers so that thesurround information is all around you. In a home theater, you useonly two speakers located to the side of your head. The TimbreMatching feature filters the information going to the surround speak-ers so that they more closely match the tonal characteristics of thesound coming from the front and surround speakers.

Adaptive Decorrelation™ - In a movie theater, a large number ofsurround speakers help create an enveloping surround sound ex-perience, but in a home theater there are usually, only two speak-ers. This can make the surround speakers sound like headphonesthat lack spaciousness and envelopment. The surround soundscollapse into the closest speaker as you move away from the middleseating position. Adaptive Decorrelation slightly changes on sur-round channel’s time and phase relationship with respect to the othersurround channel. This expands the listening position and creates--with only two speakers--the same spacious surround experienceas in a movie theater.

When you select the AC-3 THX, DTS THX, or PROLOGIC THXmodes, all three enhancements are active (On). When you selectthe AC-3 RE-EQ, DTS RE-EQ, or PROLOG RE-EQ modes, the re-equalizer is active (On) and the Timbre Match and Decorrelationfilters are off.

Pro Setup - THX - Re-EQ, Timbre Match, & Decorrelate

The Cinema Rhapsodypermits you to selectivelyengage the Re-Equalization,Timbre Match, andDecorrelation filtersindividually. Theseenhancements, when all threeare on, are equal to full THX.Thus, you can more simplyturn all three enhancements toon by simply selecting eitherthe AC-3 THX, DTS THX, orPROLOGIC THX modes usingthe MODE knob.

You can also directly selectthe AC-3 RE-EQ, DTS RE-EQor PROLOG RE-EQ modesusing the MODE knob. Pleasenote, that theseenhancements are onlyavailable on a Dolby Digital(AC-3) mode, DTS Mode, orDolby Pro Logic mode.

Pro Setup - Auto-Balance

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “OutOf The Box” Setup has theAuto Balance in the Onposition. You can selectivelyset the Auto Balance to On orOff for Inputs set to a Dolbymode.

While these fixed modes permit instant access to certain THX enhancements, the Cinema Rhapsodyalso permits you to customize inputs set to either an AC-3, DTS, or Pro Logic mode. Thus, you canselectively turn the Re-EQ, Timbre Match, and Decorrelation enhancements to on or off, individually, when in the Pro Setup mode.

If you are interested in adjusting the effects of Re-EQ, Timbre Match, and Decorrelation, you can do sofollowing the steps below.

1 While in the Pro Setup Mode, turn the MODE knob until the display reads either RE-EQUAL-IZE, TIMBRE MATCH, or Adaptive DECORRELATE and then press the MODE knob. TheCinema Rhapsody’s display will read RE-EQUALIZE (TIMBRE MATCH or DECORRELATE)on the top line and the second line will read “IS NOW ON” or “IS NOW OFF”.

2 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the correct setting for the particular THX enhance-ment, ON or OFF. Since each Input has its own default mode, you can set the THX en-hancement to on or off for other Input Labels by turning the INPUT knob and scrollingthrough all inputs. Please note, some modes will not allow you to turn on and off certainTHX enhancements.

The Repeat count is used on Dolby Digital (AC-3) modes and canbe set independently per input, which is set to an AC-3 mode. TheCinema Rhapsody’s “Out Of The Box” Setup has the Repeat Countset to “1”. If you wish to alter this setting, you can increase theRepeat Count as high as 8.

1 While in the Pro Setup Mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads REPEAT COUNT and then press the MODEknob. The Cinema Rhapsody’s display will read REPEATCOUNT on the top line and the second line will read anumber (1) followed by the word COUNT.

2 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the desired set-ting for the Repeat Count (1-8). Since each Input that ison an AC-3 mode has its own Repeat Count, you can setthe Repeat Count for other Input Labels by turning theINPUT knob, thus scrolling through all inputs.

3 To exit the REPEAT COUNT Setup Modes without leavingthe Pro Setup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wishto exit the Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobsother than MODE or INPUT.

Pro Setup - Repeat Count

The REPEAT COUNT is afunction that is directly relatedto the Dolby Digital (AC-3)Surround Mode. The RepeatCount setting indicates themaximum number ofconsecutive block repeatsbefore muting the output. TheOut Of The Box setup forrepeat count is set to 1. Themaximum setting is 8.

Page 57

The Cinema Rhapsody also permits you to adjust the gain individu-ally for all analog inputs. The Cinema Rhapsody’s “Out Of The Box”Setup has all analog inputs set to 0 dB or no Analog Gain. You canraise the gain for the analog inputs from 0 dB to 3 dB, 6 dB, or ashigh as 9 dB of gain. This is quite useful for components that havelower gain drive such as radio tuners, VCRs, and phonographs(phono preamplified output). Digital devices such as CDs, DVDs,Laser Disc players, DSS receivers, etc., typically have a higher drive. Therefore, you can adjust each analog audio input to an appropriatelevel such that, as you switch inputs, the output levels are steady.

1 While in the Pro Setup mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads ANALOG GAIN and then press the MODEknob. The display will read level arrows (<<<>>>) on thetop line and the second line will read IN = 00.0 dB (orsome other number if you have already altered the fac-tory defaults).

2 Turn the MODE knob to raise or lower the Analog Gain Con-trol from 0 dB through 9 dB (in 3 dB steps). Note that thelevel arrows will raise as you raise the Analog Gain. If thelevel arrows reach the edges of the display and the letter“C” appears (C<<<<<<<>>>>>>>C), you have raised theanalog gain too far as clipping is occurring (C=Clipping).ADA suggests raising the Analog Gain level cautiously.Since other inputs may also require Analog Gain adjust-ment, you can turn the INPUT knob to see the settings onother analog inputs and continue to adjust their gain.

3 To exit the ANALOG GAIN Setup Mode without leaving thePro Setup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wish toexit the Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobsother than MODE or INPUT.

Pro Setup - Analog Gain Control

The Cinema Rhapsody isdesigned to provide an ideallistening environment for allof your source components.Digital audio components, such as CD players, DVDs,laser disc players, and DSSreceivers typically have verygood gain drive, there is noneed to compensate theiroutput levels. However, foranalog audio components, you may wish to raise theiranalog gain so that, as youchange from one input to thenext, the output levels (thesound level in the room)remains somewhat constant. The Cinema Rhapsody is fullyequipped to lower the gainlevels for all analog inputsindependently.

The Cinema Rhapsody’s “OutOf The Box” Setup has theAnalog Gain levels set to 0 dBfor all Analog Inputs. You canselectively raise the AnalogGain for each analog audioinput in 3 dB steps up to 9 dB.The Cinema Rhapsody willdisplay the input gain level, providing the component isputting out audio, and willindicate when clipping beginsto occur.

Page 58

The Cinema Rhapsody also permits you to adjust the PCM Scalefor audio inputs. This scale has two settings, one for AC-3 Modesand another for Pro Logic Modes.

The PCM scale ranges from 0 to 255, with the factory default (OutOf The Box Setup) set to 100.

PCM Scales acts much like a digital attenuator, the higher the level(up to 127), the louder the sound. However, unlike other low to highscales, this range is based on low points of 0 and 255, whereby 127is the actual high end of the scale, right in the middle. As such, when you start to increase the scale beyond 127, the sound willbecome lower. Setting the PCM scale to either 0 or 255, nets thesame effect (no audio level).

PCM Scaling is mode specific. AC-3 modes, Pro Logic modes, andStereo modes permit PCM scaling. DTS modes do not have anoption to adjust the PCM scale factor as they are fixed. In order toalter the PCM scales individually for each input, you will need toengage the appropriate mode for an input prior adjusting the PCMscales.

While 127 is the loudest PCM Scale setting, the PCM Scale settingof 100 is the Cinema Rhapsody’s “out of the box” configuration.

ADA strongly suggests that you do not change these scales.

Adjusting the PCM Scales will raise or lower the level of each input. If you wish to adjust the PCM Scale the following steps detail howthis is accomplished.

1 While in the Pro Setup Mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads either PCM SCALE and then press theMODE knob. The Cinema Rhapsody’s display will readPCM SCALE on the top line and the second line will reada number followed by the words FOR AC-3 (for all AC-3modes), FOR PROL (for all Pro Logic modes), FOR PCM(for Stereo modes), and FIXED (for DTS Modes, you cannot alter DTS PCM scales).

2 Turn the MODE knob until the display reads the desired set-ting for the PCM Scale that you have selected. Sinceeach Input that is on an either an AC-3 mode, Pro Logicmode, or Stereo mode (not DTS) has its own PCM scalesetting, you can set the PCM Scales for other Input La-bels by turning the INPUT knob, thus scrolling through allinputs.

3 To exit the PCM Scale Setup Modes without leaving the ProSetup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wish to exitthe Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobs otherthan MODE or INPUT.

Pro Setup - PCM Scale Factors

The Cinema Rhapsodyprovides you with the abilityto alter the PCM Scales foreach input set to either an AC-3 or Pro Logic mode. Theeffect of altering the PCMscale is the lowering of adevices audio level. Thisadjustment to the audio leveldoes come with a drawbackas the audio level is reducedby discarding bits of data. Assuch it is not ideal.

ADA strongly suggests notaltering the factory default(Out Of The Box) settings forthe PCM scales.

Page 59

The Cinema Rhapsody is also prepared to decode other AC-3 for-mats, most of which are intended for AC-3 broadcast with HDTV byway of off-air or satellite reception. As these are future decodingformats, ADA strongly suggests not altering these settings.

However, should you need to alter these settings, the following de-scribes the procedure to do so.

1 While in the Pro Setup mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads INPUT FORMAT and then press the MODEknob. The display will read INPUT FORMAT on the topline and the second line will read SIF S/PDIF (or someother number if you have already altered the factory de-faults).

2 Turn the MODE knob to alter between the SIF S/PDIF andSIF NONFORM (non-formatted) settings. Since other in-puts can also have their own Input Format setting, pro-vided they are set to AC-3 modes, you can turn the IN-PUT knob to see the settings on other inputs and con-tinue to alter their Input Format.

3 To exit the INPUT FORMAT Setup Mode without leaving thePro Setup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wish toexit the Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobsother than MODE or INPUT.

Pro Setup - Input Format

The Cinema Rhapsody has theability to alter its Input Formatwhich only applies to AC-3decoding. The standard InputFormat for Dolby AC-3decoding from a laser disc orDVD is “SIF S/PDIF”. Thecurrent alternate setting is“SIF NONFORM” and is forfuture AC-3 decoding optionsthat may come with HDTV off-air or satellite broadcasts.

At this time, ADA stronglysuggests not altering theInput Format.

Page 60

The Cinema Rhapsody allows you to set the baud rate betweeneither 1200 Baud or 19,200 Baud. At 1200, the standard setting, theunit will be able to be controlled by an infrared remote control. At19,200, the IR remote control will no longer function. Also, the OSD(On Screen Display) will also no longer function (see section belowon how to engage OSD at 19200). This is an important aspect whendetermining which baud rate to use. While the 1200 Baud rate isideal when controlling via IR, if you are only controlling the CinemaRhapsody via an RS-232 control system or RF ADA remote control, you will want to change the unit’s baud rate to 19200. This willprovide you with greater speed on both control signals and feed-back strings.

1 While in the Pro Setup mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads NETWORK BAUD and then press theMODE knob. The display will read INPUT NAME on thetop line and the second line will read 1200 8,N,1 (where1200 is the Baud rate, 8 is the number of data bits, Nrefers to No Parity, and 1 is the number of stop bits).

2 Turn the MODE knob to alter between the 1200 and 19200baud settings. Even though the top line of the displayreads an Input Name, note that setting the baud rate once, will affect all inputs.

3 To exit the NETWORK BAUD Setup Mode without leavingthe Pro Setup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wishto exit the Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobsother than MODE or INPUT.

OSD at 19200

After you have set the baud rate to 19200, you have yet one moreoption that can be engaged regarding the unit’s On Screen Display. If you are not using the composite video output with OSD, then youcan skip this step. However, if you are using the unit’s OSD andhave engaged the 19200 baud rate, then you will need to:

1 Unplug the AC power of the Cinema Rhapsody and removethe cover screws. Once all the screws are removed, liftthe cover off of the unit and place it to the side.

2 When looking at the open Cinema Rhapsody from the front, located the front circuit board labeled attached to the bot-tom of the chassis. Slightly to the right of the first socketmicro and below the second, is a small switch that deter-mines which baud rate mode the OSD is set to.

3 To set the OSD to operate at the 19200 baud rate, set thisswitch to the back of the unit (DIP switch ON position). Toset it to 1200 baud, move it forward.

Pro Setup - Network Baud

The Cinema Rhapsody has theability to increase its baudrate from 1200 to 19200.When the unit is controlledfrom an infrared remotecontrol, you must use thefactory default of 1200 baud. However, when controllingthis unit via either an RS-232based control system orwireless RF ADA remotecontrol, you will want toincrease the baud rate to19200.

The Cinema Rhapsody has two low voltage outputs which can beused to trigger other components or devices. These triggers can beused to perform several different operations such as:

a Engaging a projector, screen, etc., for only video devices.b Turning on a power amplifier using an external AC switcher

(ADA ACC-3) if the amplifier will draw more than 10 ampscurrent (Cinema Rhapsody’s Switched AC Outlet maximum).

c Alternate speaker drivers between music and film playback.d Engage the ADA 6.1 Surround-Back Processor automatically

when 5.1 decoding takes place in the Cinema Rhapsody.(Note that this feature is only available on Aux DC 2).

The Cinema Rhapsody sports two such triggers an both of thesetriggers are input specific. The Out Of The Box setup is as follows:

AUX DC TRIG 1 = Engages with all inputs.

AUX DC TRIG 2 = Engages with only the Video Inputs:LASER/DVD 1, LASERDISC 2, DVD PLAYER 3, VCR 4, DSS/SAT 5, CABLE/TV6, AUXILIARY 10, CAMCORDER 11, VIDEO GAME 12, and COMPUTER 13.

Since most home theaters using this feature will involve somelevel of professional setup, you can alter the Aux DC Triggersusing the following steps. If you are planning on adjusting theFinal Input or Input Labels, ADA suggests first making theseadjustments prior to proceeding with the Aux DC Trigger setup.

To setup and verify the Aux DC Triggers:

1 While in the Pro Setup mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads either AUX DC TRIG 1 or AUX DC TRIG 2and then press the MODE knob. The display will readInput Label that is currently selected on the top line andthe second line will read DC TRIG1 ON or DC TRIG1 OFF(Aux DC Trig 2 also has an option call 6.1 ADAPTER.This option engages the Aux DC 2 trigger when 5.1 de-coding is detected, to automatically engage the ADA 6.1.If you desire this feature, you must apply it to each input.)

2 Turn the MODE knob to switch between DC TRIG1 ON orDC TRIG1 OFF. Since other inputs may also need to beset to this particular auxiliary DC trigger, you can turn theINPUT knob to see the settings on other inputs and con-tinue to alter their status from on to off or off to on. Thus, you can quickly setup an auxiliary trigger by just turningthe INPUT knob to the next input and then turning theMODE knob to set the trigger on or off.

3 To exit the AUX DC TRIGGER Setup Mode without leavingthe Pro Setup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wishto exit the Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobsother than MODE or INPUT.

Pro Setup - Auxiliary DC Triggers

The Cinema Rhapsodyfeatures two auxiliary DCoutputs or triggers. Thesetriggers are set in softwareand the two triggers operateindependently of each other.Furthermore, the Aux DCTriggers can track each inputand determine whether theyshould be on for that input.Aux DC 2 also has an optionto engage automatically whenthe Cinema Rhapsody detects5.1 decoding. Thus, AUX DC2 can be used to engage theADA 6.1 Surround BackProcessor.

As such, you can have onetrigger activate a projector, screen, curtain when onlyvideo devices are selected andanother trigger activatespeaker drivers whenswitching from a musicsource to a film source.

The Cinema Rhapsody’s OutOf The Box Setup has Aux DCTrigger 1 engaging with anyinput as to power up anauxiliary AC switcher which inturn, powers up a poweramplifier. While the CinemaRhapsody has a switchedoutlet rated at 10 Amps, thistrigger can be used inconjunction with ADA’s ACC-3AC Switcher (15 Amps) whenpowering up ADA’s HighPower MPA-500 Five ChannelPower Amplifier and BPA-500Bass Amplifier. Aux DCTrigger 2 is set to engage withonly video components.

Page 62

The Cinema Rhapsody has two proprietary ADA modes, StereoEnhance and Mono Enhance. These modes are applied to two-channel or one channel mixes respectively. These modes, whenselected have two variables, one of which is the Effect Delay. TheEffect Delay works in different ways depending on which of the twomodes are selected. When Stereo Enhance is engaged, the EffectDelay setting (0-20 ms range) is applied to the left channel, leavingthe right channel untouched, all prior to Pro Logic decoding. In theMono Enhance mode, used typically, for mono-only software, wherethe right and left channel information are identical. In this mode, thetwo channels are first mixed mono together, then the stereo enhance-ment feature is applied, with the delay set to the left channel (aftermixing down to mono) and prior to the Pro Logic decoding. Thispermits the Mono Enhance mode to deliver surround sound withdepth and feel, even though the input signal is mono and duringstandard Dolby Pro Logic playback, would only provide audio out ofthe center channel.

To set the desired Effect Delay setting:

1 While in the Pro Setup mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads EFFECT DELAY and then press the MODEknob. The display will read EFFECT DELAY on the toprow and a delay setting on the bottom row (i.e. 0 ms).

2 Turn the MODE knob to change the delay setting in the rangefrom 0 to 20 ms (milliseconds). Please note, this controloption provides real-time feedback but the turning of theMode knob to increment through the steps is a slow pro-cess.

3 To exit the EFFECT DELAY Setup Mode without leaving thePro Setup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wish toexit the Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobsother than MODE or INPUT.

Pro Setup - Effect Delay

The Cinema Rhapsody hastwo modes that are developedexclusively by ADA. TheStereo Enhance mode permitsquality surround soundplayback of two-channelmixes, even if the separationbetween the two channels isminimal. The Mono Enhancemode applies some of thesame theories of StereoEnhancement to mono-onlysignals, again providing a fullsurround sound array to amono only signal.

The Effect Delay sets up thedelay level between right andleft channels that makes thesurround effect of these twomodes more pronounced. Please note, even slightadjustment of the Effect Delaywill have an effect on howthese modes sound.

The Cinema Rhapsody has two proprietary ADA modes, StereoEnhance and Mono Enhance. These modes are applied to two-channel or one channel mixes respectively. These modes, whenselected have two variables, one of which is the Effect Level. TheEffect Level is best described as throttle for the decoding circuit. When the Effect Level is set to OFF, the decoding circuit is leastactive, providing the flattest surround sound field. When the level isset to -0 dB, the surround sound decoding circuit is processing theaudio signal at its maximum decoding level. You can decrease thisdecoding level in 1 dB steps to -20 dB or also OFF. Please note, thisfeature applies to both Stereo Enhance and Mono Enhance modes, and like the Effect Level, only needs to be set once. Like all majorCinema Rhapsody features, you may sample the results of this set-ting as you adjust it. Furthermore, a slight adjustment may make abig difference in the sound you hear.. As such, this control movesslowly. Please note, that ADA suggests a setting somewhere be-tween -4 dB and -8 dB.

To set the desired Effect Level setting:

1 While in the Pro Setup mode, turn the MODE knob until thedisplay reads EFFECT LEVEL and then press the MODEknob. The display will read EFFECT LEVEL on the toprow and a level setting on the bottom row (i.e. - 0 DB).

2 Turn the MODE knob to change the delay setting in the rangefrom -0 to -20 dB (decibels), or OFF. Please note, thiscontrol option provides real-time feedback but the turningof the Mode knob to increment through the steps is a slowprocess.

3 To exit the EFFECT LEVEL Setup Mode without leaving thePro Setup Mode, press the MODE knob. If you wish toexit the Setup Mode completely, turn any of the knobsother than MODE or INPUT.

Pro Setup - Effect Level

The Cinema Rhapsody hastwo modes that are developedexclusively by ADA. TheStereo Enhance mode permitsquality surround soundplayback of two-channelmixes, even if the separationbetween the two channels isminimal. The Mono Enhancemode applies some of thesame theories of StereoEnhancement to mono-onlysignals, again providing a fullsurround sound array to amono only signal.

The Effect Level is a uniquefeature whereby you canactually adjust the power ofthe decoding circuit. Muchlike a gas pedal, at -0 dB thedecoding circuit is operatingat its fullest. At -20 dB, thedecoding circuit is operating asignificantly lower rate. AtOFF, it’s features are notnoticeable at all.

The Cinema Rhapsody has a unique channel test feature called SoloTest. When in the Solo Test mode, you can switch between chan-nels while playing an audio track. Thus, you can actually listen toeither all channels, or selectively to one channel. Typically, on otherprocessors, this would involve lowering all channels until they couldnot be heard, then raising the volume of one channel. The CinemaRhapsody permits you to engage one channel at a time by just turn-ing a knob. Furthermore, you can also raise and lower each chan-nel or all channels while directly in the Solo Test Mode.

This feature is ideal when you are trying to test a particular channeloutput or speaker. It is also unique when toying around with sixchannel encoded material. As such, you can instantly see for your-self, the effect one particular channel has with respect to the overallsound field.

Software Note:The DTS CD of the Eagles “Hell Freezes Over” album, contains abonus cut of “Seven Bridges Road”. While this cut does featuresome instruments, the unique aspect of the recording is that eachvocalist is assigned to one of the five speaker channels. When play-ing this recording, the harmonies are actually mixing in the openspace of your home theater system, not in the recording studio. Usethe Solo Test mode to select one channel at a time and try to figureout which voice is coming from which speaker. You need not be anEagles fan to enjoy this test.

To access the Cinema Rhapsody’s Solo Test Mode:

1 Turn the CHANNEL knob until the second line of the displayreads SOLO TEST and press the CHANNEL knob.

2 At this time, the Cinema Rhapsody is in the Solo Test mode. You can now turn the CHANNEL knob to selectively ac-cess individual channels. There is even a SOLO SEQoption which will cause the Cinema Rhapsody to auto-matically sequence through all channels while in the SoloTest mode.

3 While in the Solo Test mode, if you wish to raise or lower aparticular channel’s volume level, pressing of the CHAN-NEL knob while locked into a channel, engages the vol-ume controller. Use the CHANNEL knob to raise and lowervolume levels.

4 To exit the Solo Test mode, simply turn any knob other thanthe CHANNEL knob.

Appendix A - Solo Channel Test

The Cinema Rhapsody is alsocapable of playing only onechannel at a time when in theSolo Test mode. This is idealfor testing a particularchannel’s output or anindividual speaker.

The Solo Test mode is alsoideal if you wish to determinethe information coming out ofa particular channel.

Appendix B - Resetting Factory Defaults

The Cinema Rhapsody has ahidden option that permitsyou to reset the ADA FactoryDefaults. These “out of thebox” settings can be recalledin the event you wish toreconfigure the CinemaRhapsody. Please note, thatthe Factory Default options donot reset all functions, suchas audio and video links, default modes, volumepresets, time delays, etc.

There are two optionsavailable when you wish toreturn the Cinema Rhapsodyto ADA’s “out of the box”configuration. One optionresets only the Input Labelnames. Thus, if youreprogrammed the InputLabels to read somethingother than the labels assignedby ADA prior to delivery, youcan reset these labels withoutaffecting other CinemaRhapsody parameters.Illumination is also reset to100% during this procedure.

The second reset option willbalance all channels to anequal level (at 0 dB VolumeLevel). This reset procedurewill also set the Bass Limiterto OFF, PCM Scale for AC-3,Stereo, & Prologic to 100, alldelays to 0, Analog Gains to 0,and Speaker SystemConfigurations to 0. Also,Illumination is reset to 100%.

The Cinema Rhapsody has a hidden front panel power button thatpermits you to remove power from the Cinema Rhapsody withoutunplugging the Cinema Rhapsody’s power cord. Because the Cin-ema Rhapsody’s rear panel power cord may be difficult to access, this front panel power button is ideal when you wish to make certainthe unit remains off during lengthy periods of nonuse (vacationswitch), when you want to make certain the unit remains off (whileperforming sensitive connections), or when you need to reset theCinema Rhapsody (explained below).

The Cinema Rhapsody operates on a microprocessor. Upon firstgetting power (plugging in the Cinema Rhapsody’s AC cord), thismicroprocessor powers up and remains on, even if the Cinema Rhap-sody is off. The Cinema Rhapsody’s microprocessor will remain onuntil the Cinema Rhapsody’s power cord is disconnected or the hid-den power button is pressed. While having the microprocessor con-stantly on, does not pose a problem for the Cinema Rhapsody, out-side events may require you to reset the microprocessor. Theseevents might include electrical power outages or brownouts, powersurges, lightning storms, etc. If you are experiencing problems op-erating your Cinema Rhapsody, problems that you did not experi-ence before, try turning this button off, wait a few minutes, and thenturn the switch on again. If this does not solve your operationalproblems, please contact your local ADA Dealer.

Please note, that if the Cinema Rhapsody’s hidden front panel Mas-ter Power Button is in the (Out) off position, you will not be able toturn the Cinema Rhapsody on from the front panel Volume Knob, anIR remote control, an ADA keypad, or a touch screen system. Whenthis button is set to the off position, you must first push it in to the onposition, prior to using the Cinema Rhapsody.

ADA strongly recommends leaving this button on during normal day-to-day use. Unless, you are planning to not use the system for along period of time, you will most likely leave this button in the onposition.

Appendix C - Master Reset Power Button (Vacation Switch)

The Cinema Rhapsody has ahidden front panel featurewhich permits you to removepower from the CinemaRhapsody, as if you wereremoving the CinemaRhapsody’s power cord fromthe AC outlet. The button islocated in the black plexiglassdisplay window area, to theleft side of the window (to theleft of the mode indicatorlamps). During operation, this button is depressed and itsits flush to the plexiglasssurface.
