In Life

So that you can spend more time doing what you Love with people you Love

Laughing and enjoying everything life has to offer.

Learn Our number 1 fear is to see signs

from districts to stop learning .. Most districts have had ‘periods’ of this.

No time for training No budget to send staff for training No district support in providing

training/direction No budget or desire to have Take

Two visits

Over long periods – potentially bad end result!

Visits and Communication are KEY to growth !!

Learn / Support 2608 Long distance calls for 15,170

minutes .. We spend close to 2 Hrs on the phone everyday! Brandon - lowest 524minutes Campbell River - 2359mins = 40Hrs

Highlights/Topics

Highlight 2011/2012 Big Topics.

New Technology Items for us to consider .. Learn a little even if does not apply to CIMS directly!

Statements about technology will be moving towards and integrating to Things to think about

… In no particular order!

KHAN Academy Incredible the way that education is going. Quote from one of

our district teachers: ‘Teachers will move from teaching to more of a support role in student learning’.

www.khanacademy.com

QR Codes New barcode ‘reads’ way more than just a number – website,

calendar .ics, direct to email.

PayPal Interesting proposition – PAYPAL could integrate right into

Student Fees for student/parents to VISA online … at a cost! If schools are considering housing their own machines .. This

might be a consideration!

Social Media Facebook: If Take Two had a Facebook account,

would it be beneficial?

Facebook: At a school or district level – is facebook an opportunity to communicate with parents/friends? Or does bulletin board, ParentConnect, and email handle this better?

Twitter: Is there any opportunity application wise for twitter?

Report Tools Sequel

Integrated with CIMS for security *Excellent (can make one school report and it will restrict schools based on their STU.110 - no need to make a report per school)

Delta using it for Student - Significant Features Kelowna using it for Finance, Warehouse, Employee

Web Query/400 Low cost, quick export of all query/400 No-one using. I made some attempts to install at Seven Oaks,

installation nightmare but past that quick return

Alio Intelligence Based on SAP Business objects. Extensive cost, large training

investment Integrated with CIMS Universe and many pre-existing canned

reports and dashboards already built

Sequel Sequel COST of Ownership $2,400 annual IMPORTANT: Training. Learning how to use the tools,

enhancements are key to continued reporting growth 2-3 Day Workshops in Minneapolis $450/day Online training $100/Hour - 4 hour Courses http://www.sequel-software.com/services-training

BCeSIS From the Vancouver Sun

• Many will celebrate news that the Education Ministry plans to abandon student-information software known as BCeSIS -- but not so in the Cowichan Valley.

• It's not that trustees there like BCeSIS. They don't. But they're upset that they've spent more than $1 million trying to make it work, says a story in the Comox Valley Citizen.

• Bob Harper, the district's secretary-treasurer, says the ministry is telling districts it intends to leave BCeSIS but not immediately, and there's no word on what might replace it.

• When trustee Cathy Schmidt, chair of the board's finance committee, heard there would be no more upgrades, she was "a little bit ticked off. The last several years we've been convinced that other packages were coming, that this or that was going to be built to make this better. That was the main reason we kept continuing to support BCeSIS.

• "We still haven't got the kinks out of BCeSIS now and it's cost us over a million dollars," she said.

• You all know what's been going on with BCeSIS. It's been five years of hell. And then this? It's almost like they're daring us to say something."

FAQ FAQ has been added to CIMS along with the new SEARCH engine

Web Releases Challenge to manage Release Updates on the web! IT

departments and users alike are constantly reading and distributing notes:

In green screen item is done right away and transmitted to that site only that requested to use immediately. Typically no notes necessary as they are aware of the SINGLE change. Also no IT interference or compiling/loading web app.

In web - cannot be done per feature and only to one customer … we continue to struggle how to manage???

Ideas??? Is documentation as it is presented OK- colours, dates??????

Coolspool

Significant changes on our part to migrate customers, but past this inconvenience benefits include: New AS/400 Zip/unzip which means absolutely no more CD’s for

Software Updates! New convert to Excel that will allow us to control

formatting/color/worksheet - could deliver right to your desktop and FORMATTED

Can add digital signature onto PDF automatically at time of generating it - handles approval !!! (openSSL, PKCS12 digital certificates)

Send calendar .ics attach with email so user can add that workshop reminder right to the calendar

better email send quality … move from IBM SNDST to CoolSpool option (also allows for multiple attachments which SNDDST does not)

Allows to merge PDFs

Web Upgrade

Moving to Visual Studio 2010 Were supposed to do this last summer. Going

to do this for this summer. Newer framework, better tools, better performance

No change to enduser (until we start using the new tools)

Knowing WhoEXCITED WITH THE AC, SB, TEACHERCONNECT LINKS RIGHT FROM

EC Super good at adopting the new EmployeeConnect to AdminConnect and

not actually allowing AC direct. Are generic Ids going to get us into trouble not knowing now or over time

who was attached to that ID? (Brandon KEMPER versus MAINTADMIN) Matching the actual user to the ID

For approvalsJust knowing who was attached to that ID at the

time? Is PRO.300 good enough or do we need a nightly job that just documents who is attached to what Ids and whether they signed in that day?

Green vs. Web What is your district strategy for removing

green for existing users for finance and employee? Green is faster and some may prefer it But, train in both ways? Confusing for staff

coming/going

Difficult decision!

Wings Most other Vendors have a GUI and are now enhancing on that.

In our case we totally skipped this step. We can Wings … should we?

Scanning Scanning is happening in CIMS and outside it:

At Board Office At Schools At Departments

What to do with the scanned documents - temporary

versus file them and if filing them … good instructions about what network drive and how to folder and name them!

It is important to start having this discussion. No instructions leaves all users wondering/coming up with their own strategies.

Active DirectoryMany systems are looking to active directory (new VOIP

phone systems, new Equitrack Photocopy solution, Email servers)

Our role in CIMS PRO.300 would not be to read from Active Directory - we would like to automatically fill/change active directory entries based on HR PRO.300 information so that all other systems could feed from this information Reduce manual effort Work in real-time

Our goal: Learn more about Active Directory so we can appreciate how CIMS can best participate

Statistics

In some sessions we will be identifying (in print) what districts are and are not using CIMS features (and to what extent). The purpose of this is: That we may gain confidence that others are using

this function and focus on how/why they are using it.

That you will know who you can contact for more information should you require it

Goals Continue to look at new tools and new ways of doing

things Continue to stay abreast of latest trends and

standards to ensure we are participating and integrating

Continue to enhance traditional CIMS especially as it applies to web and setup

Continue to provide significant new feature to our web line

Continue to extend function to users who to date are not online/involved??? Who are they?

Continue to expose/deploy Maintenance, superintendent dept, parents, students, teachers.
