We are Baptized and Sent!
Today is World Mission Sunday, in a special
Extraordinary Missionary Month. We are called
through our baptism to be part of the Church’s
missionary efforts, through prayer, self-sacrifice and
support of missionary vocations through material aid.
Remembering that we are baptized and sent as a
Universal Church of Christ on mission in the world,
we can PRAY for the Church’s worldwide missionary
work, we can OFFER financial HELP and CHARITY
through The Society for the Propagation of the Faith
for vulnerable communities throughout Asia, Africa,

Parish Mission Statement
We, the members of Holy Ghost Parish, are one body of Roman Catholic
people with diverse gifts and blessings, who share responsibility for the
transformation of ourselves and our world according to the teachings and
example of Jesus Christ.
Fed by the Holy Spirit, we nurture our faith through private prayer, liturgy
and sacraments, through life-long learning and teaching of Gospel values,
and through love and support of each other.
Empowered by the same Spirit, we live our faith in action through the
ministries of service, social justice, evangelization and witness, because all
are called to one and the same goal: unity with God, now and forever.
Amen.

Readings and Resources
SUNDAY REFLECTION
PERSISTENCE
Today’s readings are about persistence, passionate persistence. Exodus tells of a battle won despite weariness because Moses, with help from Aaron and Hur, held his hands raised. Timothy asks that same persistence of his community and us. Luke tells of a court case won by a widow, despite the dishonesty of the judge, because she will not leave him alone. The psalm reminds us that God is everywhere, guarding us from harm day and night, coming and going, now and forever. The readings are about persistence, the relentless, unwavering pursuit of what must not be lost. The readings are about God’s passionate persistence in pursuing us, seeking to win our hearts.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year’s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who observe an ancient rule in walking to synagogue on the Sabbath. On city streets and suburban sidewalks in many cities, we may notice around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and chatting on Friday afternoon. After a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and festive meal. They return to synagogue in the morning, and then spend an afternoon in family leisure until three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends.
Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to participate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hectic life commitments and a day of abundant joy and enrichment. Before we became an automobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, notice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. You may be surprised at how different Sunday Mass feels when it is framed by leisure!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS AND YOUR
UNDERSTANDING.
Oh, St. John Paul, from the window of heaven,
grant us your blessing! Bless the Church that you loved
and served and guided, courageously leading her along the paths of the world in order to bring Jesus to everyone and
everyone to Jesus.
Bless the young, who were your great passion.
Help them dream again, help them look up to
the heavens again to find the light that illuminates the paths of life here on earth.
May you bless each and every family! You warned
of Satan’s assault against this precious and indispensable divine spark that God lit on
earth. St. John Paul, with your prayer, may you protect the
family and every life that blossoms from the family.
Pray for the whole world, which is still marked by
tensions, wars and injustice. You opposed war by invoking
dialogue and planting the seeds of love: pray for us so that we
may be tireless sowers of peace.
Oh St. John Paul, from heaven’s window, where
we see you beside Mary, send God’s blessing down upon us all.
Amen.

A Prayer For Our Church
Heavenly Father, in every age, you have been our refuge. Yet again and still, we stand before you asking for your protection on your Holy Church. We place our Church in your hands, for without you we can do nothing. May Jesus, our High Priest and true compass, continue to lead her in every thought and action to be an instrument of justice, a source of consolation, a sacrament of unity, and a manifestation of your faithful covenant. For the victims of abuse and their families, pour out your healing and your peace. For the leaders of your Church, pour out your Spirit to guide them and inspire their decisions. For those who have followed your call to serve you and your people in holiness, sustain them by your grace. For all the faithful who are searching for answers, embrace them with your love, restore their trust, console them with your clear Gospel message, and renew them with your sacraments. We ask this in the name of your Son and our Brother, and through the Holy Spirit, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.

DISCIPLES MAKING DISCIPLES
A parish Discipleship Team has been formed to assist the Parish Staff and Fr. John in formulating a vision/plan for Missionary Discipleship. The Discipleship Team is meeting monthly. They are reading Bishop Conlon’s Pastoral letter: “GO,” HE SAID with an eye on how Holy Ghost Parish is being called to make disciples. Additionally, they will be reading, discussing books and articles, and growing in wisdom and knowledge. In upcoming bulletins, we will share quotes from various points of view. Today, we begin with the Great Commission: “Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.” Jesus has given us four basic tasks:

In the 1930s, our Lord revealed to an unknown religious sister a message for our times. To an age marked by conflict, despair, lack of respect for human life and dignity, and in need of His forgiveness and merciful love, He said, “Mankind will not have peace until it turns with trust to My mercy” (Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, 300). Now this incredible true story of St. Faustina and the message of Divine Mercy will be told one night only in more than 700 movie theaters across the United States on Monday, October 28, in the new film “Love and Mercy: Faustina." The docudrama follows the incredible call of St. Faustina to religious life and the healing effects of this message on countless people around the world.
The Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception served as consultants for this 120-minute docudrama that was written and directed by Michal Kondrat.
“The idea to create 'Love and Mercy' first came to me two years ago after reading the Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska," said Mr. Kondrat, who filmed in his native Poland as well as at the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and locations in Lithuania, and Italy. "Divine Mercy is changing millions of lives, but most Christians are still unaware of the power of the message that Jesus gave to humanity through
Sr. Faustina, a simple Polish nun who is now a saint," said Mr. Kondrat, whose previous films include "Two Crowns," dedicated to the life of St. Maximilian Kolbe. Filmed in English, “Love and Mercy: Faustina” dramatizes key moments in St. Faustina's life and the difficulties and triumphs that accompanied the spread of the message following her death in 1938. One day this poor, faithful Polish farm girl with little formal education has her life irreversibly upturned when Jesus appears to her in a vision. Jesus commissions her to proclaim the truth of His mercy in order to prepare the world for His final coming. Featured scenes include her call from Jesus to enter the convent; her relationship with Fr. Michael Sopocko, the priest sent by Christ to help her carry out her mission; the often frustrating process of creating the Divine Mercy Image, as Jesus requested; her and Fr. Sopocko's trust in Christ amidst the many spiritual trials; and the handing off of key Divine Mercy documents to a Marian priest, Fr. Joseph Jarzebowski, MIC, who escaped to America to fulfill his promise to promote Divine Mercy. Interviews with present-day scholars and promoters of her message are interspersed among the dramatic portrayals.
The film breaks new ground with discoveries of original writings from now-Blessed Sopocko.
