Parish Mission Statement
We, the members of Holy Ghost Parish, are one body of Roman Catholic
people with diverse gifts and blessings, who share responsibility for the
transformation of ourselves and our world according to the teachings and
example of Jesus Christ.
Fed by the Holy Spirit, we nurture our faith through private prayer, liturgy
and sacraments, through life-long learning and teaching of Gospel values,
and through love and support of each other.
Empowered by the same Spirit, we live our faith in action through the
ministries of service, social justice, evangelization and witness, because all
are called to one and the same goal: unity with God, now and forever.
Amen.

SUNDAY REFLECTION
LOST AND FOUND
Welcome to “Lost and Found Sunday”! Just in case being in church makes us proudly consider ourselves especially religious, today’s Gospel suggests that we’d be wiser to admit that we’re sometimes lost. Then we’ll eventually be happily counted among Jesus’ “found,” because today Jesus focuses on a lost sheep, lost coin, lost son. Jesus does so because the Pharisees and scribes, proudly considering themselves especially religious, “began to complain” that Jesus “welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So Jesus warns them — and us— to stop judging others. Marvel instead that God’s amazing grace has found us! Indeed, we should become Jesus’ friends lovingly trying to find others. So Exodus asks, if God “relented in punishment” and pardoned us, shouldn’t we forgive fellow sinners graciously? Even Paul admits his “arrogance” as “foremost among sinners.” We too, happy at being “mercifully treated,” should share with everyone else Jesus’ unfailing patience.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Although New Year’s Day has been fixed firmly on January 1 for several hundred years, Labor Day has the feel of a great dividing line between leisure and routine. The pace of life has since picked up, and new schedules and commitments crowd us. In the background is God’s call to consider the third commandment, still life-giving and binding, to make holy the Lord’s Day by worship and rest. Jews see the Sabbath, Saturday, not so much as a day of worship, but as a day of rest, a day of renewing friendship with God by delighting in the beauty of creation and the joy of family and friends. It is a day for contemplating the wonder of God’s creation, but not disturbing it.
For Christians in the first three centuries, the Lord’s Day, Sunday, was not for rest, but worship. It was a regular work day. People met before dawn, and after Eucharist hurried off to daily routines. Today we come to Mass, but many hurry off to essential work, not a day of rest. The Lord’s Day is not the Sabbath, but we can enhance Sunday’s ability to transform us if we consider embracing some Sabbath values: having a family meal, going for a walk in a beautiful place, making room in our lives to open ourselves more fully to holiness of life in Christ.

O most holy Virgin,
Mother of our Lord
Jesus Christ,
by the overwhelming grief
you experienced
when you witnessed
the martyrdom,
the crucifixion,
and the death
of your divine Son,
look upon me
with eyes of compassion,
and awaken in my heart
a tender commiseration
for those sufferings,
as well as a sincere
detestation of my sins,
in order that,
being disengaged
from all undue affection
for the passing joys
of this earth,
I may sigh after
the eternal Jerusalem,
and that henceforward
all my thoughts
and all my actions
may be directed
towards this one
most desirable object:
Honor, glory, and love
to our divine Lord Jesus,
and to the holy and immaculate
Mother of God.
Amen.

A Prayer For Our Church
Heavenly Father, in every age, you have been our refuge. Yet again and still, we stand before you asking for your protection on your Holy Church. We place our Church in your hands, for without you we can do nothing. May Jesus, our High Priest and true compass, continue to lead her in every thought and action to be an instrument of justice, a source of consolation, a sacrament of unity, and a manifestation of your faithful covenant. For the victims of abuse and their families, pour out your healing and your peace. For the leaders of your Church, pour out your Spirit to guide them and inspire their decisions. For those who have followed your call to serve you and your people in holiness, sustain them by your grace. For all the faithful who are searching for answers, embrace them with your love, restore their trust, console them with your clear Gospel message, and renew them with your sacraments. We ask this in the name of your Son and our Brother, and through the Holy Spirit, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.

Human experience and psychological research confirm the teachings of Scripture that
practicing forgiveness is good for our health and happiness and that refusing to forgive can bind
us in depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. We may not feel like forgiving, but God calls us
to embody pardon and mercy in imitation of the divine forgiveness we have received.
Learn the dynamics of forgiveness and how it can bring healing
to your personal life, your family, and our church.
Enjoy an all you can eat lunch, while you break open scripture.

Council of Catholic Women
Can you help give a Box of Joy? The Holy Ghost Council of
Catholic Women is working with Cross Catholic Outreach to
bring a Box of Joy to a child in a far away land (Haiti, Domini-
can Republic, and Guatemala.) Every year thousands of
children experience a Christmas without hope. Burdened by
poverty, their families struggle to provide the basic necessi-
ties. Many of these children have never held a picture book,
worn a new shirt, or held a new toy.
Our help is needed to bring a Box of Joy this Christmas sea-
son to these children. The CCW is collecting NEW items for
boys and girls ages 2-14 years. On October 8th, the Holy
Ghost CCW will pack the boxes. You can help by donating
gifts to fill those boxes.
Good things DO come in small packages! The
Box of Joy is about the size of shoe box: 12”x5”x4”. When
donating gifts, please keep in mind that your donation must
fit in a box this size. Each Box of Joy does cost about $9.00 to
ship. Checks made to Cross Catholic Outreach or cash dona-
tions to assist in shipping costs are greatly appreciated. A
donation receptacle will be provided at the Welcome Center.
Starting the weekend of September 21st and 22nd, drop your
gift items into the containers in the Church entrances.
Donations will be collected until October 6th. The gifts we
pack into the Box of Joy will show God’s unconditional love
and spark the joy every child should experience at Christmas.
Last year Holy Ghost Parish prepared 101 boxes. We would
like to match that number this year. Please see the list of
suggested gifts. Thank you so much for your generosity.
